Motorists encouraged to change engine oil, carry out vehicle checks

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Pollution Control is encouraging motorists, particularly those owning cars that are over 10 years old, to change their engine oil and carry out vehicle checks to reduce pollution across the country.

The Director-General of the Department of Pollution Control, Pralong Dumrongthai, inspected the Fit Auto service center, one of the many auto service centers taking part in a PM2.5 reduction project. The centers provide vehicle checks and changes engine oil for free, as 72.5% of air pollution is from car exhaust. Members of the public are invited to take their cars for servicing at more than 450 Pracharat auto service centers nationwide. The centers can serve some 150,000 vehicles, and they will provide free service until the end of this month. The department will analyse the project’s success before considering its extension.

The Department of Pollution Control is coordinating with the Royal Thai Police to limit the routes large trucks can use in an effort to ease the PM2.5 dust situation. One of the routes will run from a section of Ratchadapisek Road to Kanchanaphisek Road. The agencies will take measures to control open burning in Bangkok and other provinces. Anyone found burning in open areas will be arrested and fined.

The Department of Industrial Works will step up its efforts to inspect factories and reduce industrial emissions to help reduce levels of the ultra-fine dust particles.

Maybe just think about the fact that all trucks, even pickups here are diesel. Most of which do not have anything near a new generation engine. Just saying...

Good news though is they are at least paying attention.

To AOs point, far too many old consumer and commercial diesel vehicles around. No way to retrofit anything to fix that. It will take years to phase them out. While keeping any vehicle maintained to be efficient as possible is best it is not something many Thais have resources for. They drive until it dies.

    Disagree.
The vast majority of pickups (i'd guestimate more than 3 in 4 so over 75%) are modern, made in the last 12-15 years, so all alloy commonrail motors.
Big trucks (Lorries in Britspeak) less so.

Pitiful dribbling yet again from a systemically incoherent society incapable of embracing the modern world.

All vehicles requiring registration and licences should submit to testing by a government agency every 1 to 2 years once the vehicle is more than, say, four years old with specific focus on safety and emissions. Failure to test should result in a range of penalties including fines, disqualification and confiscation.

But this is Thailand so it cannot work.

Come on TG, you know that every year they have new emission standards for both petrol and diesel. A 15 year old truck, while yes may have a common rail injector set up, is still managed by an ECU that controls fuel and emissions and is set to the standards applicable for that year of requirements. A 12 or 15 year old diesel is cleaner then the previous old mechanical pump injected sets ups but nothing close to say trucks both big and small made in the last 5 years.

I see 7- 10 year old Vigo's belching filth all the time, even at idle.

Once Thailand sets an emission standard and then commences with annual checks the truth will come out. But we all know that kind of control is not on the horizon yet and won't be in my lifetime here. Just like in the states, it took years to weed out old carburetor cars with ineffective SMOG pumps after TBI was introduced. Those older cars became classics and people found ways around the emission laws but they were seldom driven daily anyway.

I doubt your average chickenhead knows the difference between coolant and oil.

Good, if rather obvious advice. Also check the spark plugs every now and again, the oil & air filters, and when one of your lights doesn't work you really should replace it. Oh, and when one of those funny colored lights on the dashboard comes on and starts flashing, it's not for entertainment. But try telling my ex that. Or any Somchai. From a Victim of expensive repair bills.

^ Yeah....you should have been with me when "she who must not be mentioned" accelerated the car into a brick wall from 4 metres way, while I was in the passenger seat, testicles retracting.

Brilliant ! Encourage chickenheads to change their oil and save the environment, and watch them dump the used oil in the same places they dump plastic.......anywhere.
