Thread: Thai Teachers Committing Suicide Over Mounting Debt Burdens

The Thai Teachers Development Association has appealed to an MP to ask the prime minister to help ease “Thai Teachers” debt burdens. The appeal was made through New Palang Dharma Party MP Ravee Machamadol Friday.


Ravee said some 400,000 Thai teachers were in debt because of the Cremation Welfare Fund. A project that was designed to aid school personnel in need. The project fund is also affecting 45 million students and their parents, he said.


“The debt problem is at a critical level,” he said. “Teachers’ houses and assets have been confiscated because they were unable to repay loans. Even more leaving some Thai teachers stressed out and sick. In the three worst cases, Thai teachers committing suicide.”

Ravee said the Administrative Court had ordered 70 per cent of Thai teachers’ pay garnisheed to pay off their debts. Placing a huge burden on retired teachers whose pension are less than their previous salary.

Why just teachers? Seems to be happening across the board. An auxiliary nurse's dog bit a jogger quite badly in the village. She was told to pay compensation. She hung herself instead. No money.

The article says they are in debt because of the fund.... if its not houses and cars what debt is it.... do they owe hundreds of thousands on credit cards ?

If I get the teacher's logic stated here, government should help teachers because it made loans available to them...

It's not proper to Thailand, public workers where I used to be had a higher debt rate than private sector employees because both them and the banks thought that they will be able to pay back the loans because of job security and scheduled pay raises based on seniority...

I do not understand this about the government helping out the teachers financially. The teachers, nurses, police etc all have Credit Unions to help with finance. Low cost loans are given and paid back by the employer each pay day. The borrower doesn't pay it back directly other than through his employer. Which guarantees repayment.

just who is to blame? household debt is at an all time high,banks NPLS are also at a record high,tv.adverts,every 10minutes there are new cars avertised,just looking at the english supplement newspaper,new cars for the thai market,one 2.6million bht.and the other 3million.there,s the debt that is driving thais to commit suicide and just think who is responsible.?

Do you think none of those people was just struggling to get by on meagre resources, rather than looking for free money so that they could go on a joyride?

Why does an advertisement for an expensive car in a country with millions of poor people in debt suggest to you that the poor people are all indisciplined spendthrifts, rather than the sensible conclusion that the country has vastly unequal wealth distribution?

The reason why many fek themselves up is because they can borrow against there pensions.

There's an understanding as to why many go into education.
Traditionally, easy to secure loan after loan without suspicions rising or questions asked.

The backed up personal debt within this field is quite astounding.

^ Agree, it's an important perk, always mentioned when discussing about this job. I know a few Thai teachers, some are family others neighbors or friends...all of them have debts. Only one, the youngest, has what I consider a justified debt: she bought a 2nd hand Vios to get to work (30km from her home on mountain "highway").


TBH the debt issue seems more prevalent here than in most western countries, even the ones were living on loans/credit cards is kind of the way of life (financial crisis surely "helped").
