A member of the South Korean national youth cycling team has died after he was hit by a pickup truck while riding in Mae Rim Jan. 28.
The accident occurred on Mae Rim – Samoeng Road (Highway 1096) through Mon Cham at around 10 a.m.
The rider, identified only as Omseum (transliterated from Thai), 18 was in Chiang Mai as part of a winter training program. Omseum had previously won two gold medals for South Korea at the Asian Youth Cycling Championship in October and was regarded as a fast rising star with the potential to go on to the Olympic Games.
How the accident occurred is not clear but what is known is that he was struck by a black Isuzu pickup truck. Omseum was given CPR at the site of the accident but later died in hospital.
Police are said to be investigating.
