Can't wait to see all the old Cheech and Chong movies dubbed over to Thai soon.

The words "bong" and "ganja" are Thai words.

It was part of the culture used for cooking, recreational and medicinal purposes before the Americans came in after Vietnam and forced Thailand to ban it - with the threat of trade issues if they didn't comply.

Thailand is just making things normal again.

    Well done, about time.

^ "Bong" means bamboo in Thai ... which is what bongs were made of traditionally. I am pretty sure ganga is Thai too (as far as I know). I had this conversation with dirtydog here over 10 years ago...

Bongs have been in use by the Hmong, in Laos and Thailand, and all over Africa for centuries.[3] One of the earliest recorded uses of the word in the West is in the McFarland Thai-English Dictionary, published in 1944, which describes one of the meanings of bong in the Thai language as, "a bamboo waterpipe for smoking kancha, tree, hashish, or the hemp-plant." A January 1971 issue of the Marijuana Review also used the term.

Ganja is a Hindi name for hemp, derived from the word ganjha, from the Sanskrit gañjā, referring to a "powerful preparation from cannabis sativa".[1][2][3] The term ganja, one of the oldest and most commonly used synonyms for marijuana in the English language, dates to before 1689.[4]
