It's OK though, Thailand will save the day!

The faculties of Dentistry and Tropical Medicine at Thailand’s Mahidol University claim to have jointly developed a mouthwash formula which is 99% effective at killing the COVID-19 virus in the mouth, preventing it from replicating in human cells.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Surakit Visutthiwattanakorn, director of the dental hospital of the Faculty of Dentistry, said today (Monday) that the mouthwash is an extension of one produced from natural extracts from Thai rice, used in the treatment of mouth ulcers, adding that the Institute of Technology and Innovation Management of Mahidol University is now in the process of applying to the Department of Intellectual Property Rights for a patent.
He assured the public that the mouthwash is safe, has no side effects on oral tissue and will help reduce the risk of infections.
Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saranya Tancharoen, chief of the pharmacology department and a member of the mouthwash research team, said that it contains the right and safe dose of hydrogen peroxide and other compounds which do not irritate the inside of the mouth.
She said that the mouthwash has undergone laboratory controlled human trials among patients in the dental hospital, claiming that it is 99.9% effective in preventing the spread of coronavirus in the body, by breaking down the fatty layer of the virus, thus deactivating it.
“For instance, if there are 100,000 viruses in the mouth, this innovation can reduce the virus load to just 41,” she claimed, adding that the new mouthwash will be put on trial in field hospitals and other treatment facilities.
The research team is being led by Dr. Saranya, Dr. Pornsawan Leaungwutiwong, head of the virology and immunology department and Asst. Prof Akanitt Jittmittraphap of the department of virology and immunology of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine at the university.

America.... health care.... it's a license to print money.

    Just absurd really.

Rapid at-home Covid-19 tests are flying off store shelves across the country and are largely sold out online as the delta variant of the coronavirus complicates a return to school, work and travel routines.

But at $10 or $15 a test, the price is still far too high for regular use by anyone but the wealthy. A family with two school-age children might need to spend $500 or more a month to try to keep its members — and others — safe.

    <snip>

Consumers elsewhere have much cheaper — or free — options. In Germany, grocery stores sell rapid tests for
under $1 apiece. In India, they're about $3.50. The U.K. provides 14 tests per person free of charge. Canada is doling out free rapid tests to businesses.

Fact Check-6,000 VAERS reports were deleted for being foreign entries, CDC says

    By Reuters Fact Check

Users are claiming that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deleted reports of 6,000 deaths from the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The CDC told Reuters the entry removal was due to foreign reports being combined with domestic reports.

Examples can be seen here and here .

The text in one post reads: “Does this surprise you?! Does it frustrate you?! Not only are deaths and adverse reactions already underreported, but then to have them DELETE the information is absolutely ridiculous and super disrespectful!!! Click below to read the full article!!”

Archives of the CDC page in question here show the increase and decrease in the number of deaths reported to VAERS.

An archived version of the page captured at 17:41 GMT on July 20 shows 6,079 reports of deaths (here).

The next capture was taken at 21:02 GMT on July 20 showing 12,313 reports of deaths (here).

The number reverted back to 6,079, as seen in a capture at 18:54 GMT on July 21 (here). It was then updated to 6,207 reports of death in a capture at 01:39 GMT on July 22 (here).

Curtis Gill, a CDC representative, told Reuters via email that the CDC is aware of an error which took place while data was being uploaded to the page.

“The error resulted in what appeared to be a large spike in the number of deaths reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) after COVID-19 vaccination,” Gill said. “It happened, accidentally, because of combining foreign and domestic reports, and has been corrected.”

When viewing VAERS data on its website, users can filter results by location, which includes U.S. states and territories, as well as an option labelled “foreign” and “unknown”. There are more than 110,000 results for adverse events following COVID-19 vaccines reported when selecting “foreign” and “unknown” as the location.

The advisory guide to the interpretation of VAERS data here explains: “VAERS occasionally receives case reports from US manufacturers that were reported to their foreign subsidiaries. Under FDA regulations, if a manufacturer is notified of a foreign case report that describes an event that is both serious and unexpected (in other words, it does not appear in the product labeling), they are required to submit it to VAERS. It is important to realize that these case reports are of variable data quality and completeness, due to the many differences in country reporting practices and surveillance-system quality.” (vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html)

The 6,207 number of reported deaths remains on the website as of publishing, making up 0.0018 percent among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine after more than 339 million doses were administered in the U.S. (here). These deaths, however, are not confirmed to be causal.

On the same page, the CDC says: “FDA requires healthcare providers to report any death after COVID-19 vaccination to VAERS, even if it’s unclear whether the vaccine was the cause.”

Anyone can report events to VAERS ( vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html ) and a disclaimer on the CDC website says: “The reports may contain information that is incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental, or unverifiable” (here ). When downloading the data, users are presented with a further disclaimer that the data do not include information from investigations into reported cases. The disclaimer also says “the inclusion of events in VAERS data does not imply causality” (here ).

Reuters explored this lack of causality in other fact check articles visible here , here and here .

    VERDICT
Missing context. The larger number of reported deaths was due to an error that occurred while uploading data to the website. There is no evidence the CDC is deleting reports of deaths.

The French have been notable failures when it comes to vaccines.

French vaccine maker Valneva says the UK government has scrapped a deal for its Covid-19 vaccine.
The UK had about 100 million doses on order, after it increased its request by 40 million in February.
The company said in a statement that the UK government served notice over allegations of a breach of the agreement, which it "strenuously denies".
Valneva's jab is still being tested in trials.
Although regulators must be satisfied before the rollout of any vaccine, manufacturing at a site in West Lothian, Scotland, had already started.
The plant in Livingston is thought to have some 100 scientists and technicians working there.
In a statement on its website, Valneva said: "Valneva SE, a specialty vaccine company, today announced that it has received a termination notice from the UK Government (HMG) in relation to the Supply Agreement for its Covid-19 vaccine candidate, VLA2001.
"The contract provides HMG with the right to terminate. HMG has alleged that the company is in breach of its obligations under the supply agreement, but the company strenuously denies this."
The firm said on Monday that results from its phase three trials were due later this year. It added: "Valneva has worked tirelessly, and to its best efforts, on the collaboration with HMG including investing significant resources and effort to respond to HMG's requests for variant-derived vaccines.
The company hopes that, dependent on the results of its continuing trials and sign-off from the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, initial approval could still be granted in 2021.
Valneva said that it would also look to other potential customers to ensure that the vaccines can still be used in the fight against the pandemic. The Department for Health did not immediately respond to the BBC's request for comment.

Germany’s donated Covid-19 cocktail lands in Bangkok

The Covid-19 medication donated by Germany arrived in Thailand this morning.

The German Embassy had announced last week that the shipment worth 153 million baht included the casirivimab/imdevimab antiviral cocktail.

The drugs have been registered by the Thai Food and Drug Administration and will be distributed to specific hospitals.

The embassy said 2,000 doses of the cocktail will be used on patients in severe condition.

Casirivimab/imdevimab is an artificial “antibody cocktail” designed to trigger resistance against the Covid-19 virus.

Thai Health Authorities Reveal Data on Fatalities from COVID-19 Vaccinations

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) has revealed data on fatalities and side effects after administering over 35 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines by September 5th.

The DDC said 628 deaths were reported, of which 416 were determined by experts to not be related to the vaccination, and 249 cases were concomitant events caused by other conditions.

According to the data, 38 fatalities was reported among people who received Sinovac as the first shot and AstraZeneca as the second. Three of the cases were not related to the vaccines, 3 cases were inconclusive, while information is still being gathered in 32 cases. Symptoms found after completing the combined vaccination include fever, headaches, vomiting, dizziness, nausea and muscle aches.

Among those who received AstraZeneca as a booster shot, after two shots of Sinovac, 3 people died. Two cases were reportedly irrelevant and information is being collected about one other fatality. Symptoms found are similar to those seen the combined vaccination regime. As for the Pfizer booster dose, after two Sinovac doses, there were 3 fatalities. One case is inconclusive, while 2 cases are still being investigated. Most of the symptoms found after the third shot were similar to other booster shots, but with rashes.

Imagine one US state with the sort of numbers you are seeing in a relatively unvaccinated country like Thailand.

And that with free availability of good vaccines and a tenth of the population.

    Trumpanzees are so fucking thick.

More facepalm. This Weinberg chap seems to sum it up well though.

As if attempting to one-up last week’s stupidity with regards to ivermectin, anti-vaxxers on Facebook and Twitter are advocating for a new and unproven Covid-19 treatment: Betadine, an antiseptic used to treat cuts and scrapes.
Povidone iodine, often sold under the brand-name Betadine, is an iodine-based treatment largely for topical use that kills bacteria. It’s a “commonly used cleanser in the ER and OR,” says Kenneth Weinberg, an emergency room physician in New York City. “If you’re in the ER and someone has a wound to sew it up, you use it to clean with.” When told that anti-vaxxers had taken to gargling with Betadine, Weinberg said, “Fuck me! Of course they are.”
Solutions that include povidone iodine have also previously been marketed as a vaginal douche to treat itching in some countries. “We use it before surgery to clean the vagina,” says OB/GYN Dr. Jennifer Gunter. “The reason it is bad in douches is that it kills the good bacteria and can be an irritant.”
Betadine is mostly intended for external use, as it can result in iodine poisoning if taken orally, says Gunter. But on social media, people are promoting it as a means of warding off the Covid-19 virus, either by gargling it or using it in a nasal spray. “Don’t get Covid. Prophylaxis is not that hard,” one person touting themselves as an ER doctor tweeted in a post that racked up almost 300 shares, along with a photo of various supplements, including melatonin and vitamin D (none of which have been proven to effectively prevent against Covid-19). “Also nasal spray with a couple of drops betadine in it. And gargle with original Listerine.” Another poster on Facebook wrote, “Gargling, nasal spray and eye drops with 1 percent providone iodine (betadine) results in dramatically better outcomes with Covid infections. I do this every time I’ve been exposed.” (This particular poster cites a 2020 paper written by a Bangladeshi plastic surgeon, one of several that investigates this question, to support this view.)
Betadine does make a diluted product, sold as a gargle to treat sore throat symptoms. But the manufacturers specifically state that it is not intended for ingestion, and that “Betadine Antiseptic products” — including the gargle — “have not been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment or prevention of Covid-19 or any other viruses.”
Needless to say, the side effects of ingesting Betadine can be nasty. Weinberg said that when he was doing his residency, he treated a patient who went into kidney failure after drinking iodine and had to be on dialysis (he eventually recovered, but only after he’d started urinating reddish-brown). “I’m sure it would cause all kinds of GI symptoms as well if you ate or drank enough of it,” he says. When asked if gargling Betadine could reduce the effects of Covid-19 or prevent transmission, Weinberg said, “Fuck no.”

All active duty soldiers are expected to be vaccinated by Dec. 15, the U.S. Army said Tuesday.
“This is quite literally a matter of life and death for our Soldiers, their families and the communities in which we live,” Lt. Gen. R. Scott Dingle, the Army's surgeon general, said in a statement. “Case counts and deaths continue to be concerning as the Delta variant spreads, which makes protecting the force through mandatory vaccination a health and readiness priority for the total Army.”

Reserve and National Guard units are expected to be fully vaccinated by June 30, 2022. There are 485,000 active duty service members in the Army, 189,500 in the Reserve and 336,000 in the National Guard.
