The fast-spreading delta variant remains the “most concerning” coronavirus strain despite the emergence of the mu variant, World Health Organization officials said Tuesday.

The mu variant, which was added to the WHO’s list of variants “of interest” last week, has mutations that suggest it could evade the immune protection provided by natural infection or vaccination, Maria Van Kerkhove, the agency’s technical lead for Covid-19, said during a virtual press event. Still, the new variant — first detected in Colombia but now confirmed in at least 39 countries — hasn’t taken off like delta, she said.

“The delta variant for me is the one that’s most concerning because of the increased transmissibility,” Kerkhove said, adding it has at least double the transmissibility of the original ancestral virus that emerged in late 2019.

DALTON, Ga. — The CEOs of six major hospitals in northwest Georgia and the state’s Department of Health united in a sobering letter about the growing COVID-19 crisis in Georgia.

The CEOs of AdventHealth Southeast, the Floyd Health System, Hamilton Medical Center, Harbin Clinic, Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center and Redmond Regional Medical Center said cases and deaths are increasing dramatically, outbreaks in schools are the highest they’ve ever been and healthcare workers are exhausted on the same day

Officials said only 35% of people in northwest Georgia are fully vaccinated, leaving the majority of people vulnerable to catching and spreading COVID-19.

“We need your help like never before. The pandemic — its current surge driven by the highly transmissible delta variant — continues to spread throughout Northwest Georgia and is quickly becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” they wrote. “Most new cases, hospitalizations and people in our critical care units on ventilators and advanced oxygen support are unvaccinated.”

Officials said rapidly increasing hospitalizations and deaths are “leaving families broken and torn apart and frontline workers physically and emotionally exhausted.”

Citing studies, officials said vaccinated Georgians have almost no risk of being hospitalized or dying of the virus.

Officials urged people not to go to emergency departments or call an ambulance for COVID-19 testing unless they are experiencing significant symptoms like severe respiratory distress, stroke symptoms or trauma.

“Let’s work together to stop the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19. We strongly urge everyone age 12 and older to get vaccinated, wear a mask in public settings where social distancing is not possible and wash their hands frequently,” officials wrote. “The vaccines work.

They are safe and they prevent serious illness, hospitalization and death. If you haven’t been vaccinated, please protect yourself, your loved ones and your community by doing so.”

Japan shoots for November to ease virus restrictions across nation

The central government sees light at the end of the tunnel around November, drafting a plan to ease anti-virus restrictions in areas under a state of emergency at that time, expecting that vaccinations will be widespread by then.

Eateries will then be allowed to serve alcoholic beverages and events can be held without strict limits on attendees.

Officials are expected to make a formal decision at a meeting of the central government’s headquarters on the COVID-19 pandemic on Sept. 9.

However, some experts have expressed concern that the central government discussing a plan to ease restrictions while the infection situation has not been brought under control may cause people to drop their guard.

    Not so easy though.

All sorts of different paperwork involved now.

The time to standardise things was at the start of the year, at latest.

If only an organisation like the WHO had been perfectly positioned to do something useful for a change.

    What an utterly pathetic performance.

Excellent news. Let's hope this quickly becomes an international standard and all these tiresome antivax and ivermectin wankers will have to stay at home.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has reiterated that the airline will ban unvaccinated passengers from international flights when borders reopen and hopes this will happen in December.
Speaking to the Trans-Tasman Business Circle in the latest in a series on vaccination, Mr Joyce said the airline would introduce a policy that would require proof of vaccination before flying.
"Qantas will have a policy that internationally we'll only be carrying vaccinated passengers," he said. "Because we think that's going to be one of the requirements to show that you're flying safe and getting into those countries. We're hoping that can happen by Christmas."

So this stuff lines your nasal passages so that the bug has nowhere to grow.

It seems to have some effect as a prophylactic, but there's not a lot of data.

The way it's worded makes it sound like a drug, but really it's a spray on nasal condom of sorts. *

No good for klondick though, it's actually for humans.

    Blame politicians.

Some will be fighting over who makes money out of it.

Some will be fighting because they believe it will confer upon them some kind of "status".

Others will be whinging about their citizens data being sent overseas.

They're all thick as shit and don't know what it's about anyway.

The airlines could take away the decision from them by using the IATA process.

But unfortunately there are too many airlines controlled by these witless state officials.

Look in to the eyes, Look in to the eyes, don't look around the eyes...

Cells in the eye can be directly infected by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to findings published May 17 by ScienceDirect.
Below are four things to know about COVID-19 infections of the eye:
    1. Researchers exposed adult human eyes to SARS-CoV-2 in an in vitro stem cell model and then studied them after 24 hours. The virus is able to infect surface cells of the eye, the researchers found. Ocular surface cells, particularly the limbus, were particularly susceptible to infection, while the central cornea was less vulnerable.
    2. Researchers are currently trying to determine if the virus can be spread through the eyes, Timothy Blenkinsop, PhD, study author and assistant professor of cell, developmental and regenerative biology at New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System, told Becker's. While aerosol transmission is thought to be the primary route of spread, viral particles detected in ocular fluid suggest the eye may be a vulnerable point of viral entry. However, scientists don't have evidence to back the theory up yet, in part because it is difficult to develop experiments where nasal infections don't complicate the results.
    3. To prevent the transmission of COVID-19, people in dense areas that aren't well ventilated would benefit from eye protection. Front-line providers should definitely have eye protection, Dr. Blenkinsop said, which is already fairly standard in the U.S.
    4. Other studies have found a significant number of patients with severe COVID-19 experience abnormal nodules of the eye. Three recent reports showed retinal findings, such as hemorrhages, cotton wool spots, dilated veins or tortuous vessels, are possibly tied to COVID-19.

Biden to announce that all federal workers must be vaccinated, with no option for testing

(CNN)President Joe Biden on Thursday will impose more stringent vaccine rules on federal workers, and take steps to encourage private businesses to do the same, during a major speech meant to lay out a new approach to combating the coronavirus.

Among the steps the President will take is signing an executive order requiring all federal workers be vaccinated against Covid-19, with no option of being regularly tested to opt out of the requirement, according to a source familiar with the plans.

The President will also sign an executive order directing the same standard be extended to employees of contractors who do business with the federal government. The Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Indian Health Service and National Institutes of Health will also complete their previously announced vaccination requirements, which the White House estimates covers 2.5 million workers.

    Whoa!

Sweeping new vaccine mandates for 100 million Americans

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Thursday is announcing sweeping new federal vaccine requirements affecting as many as 100 million Americans in an all-out effort to increase COVID-19 vaccinations and curb the surging delta variant that is killing thousands each week and jeopardizing the nation’s economic recovery.

The expansive rules mandate that all employers with more than 100 workers require them to be vaccinated or test for the virus weekly, affecting about 80 million Americans. And the roughly 17 million workers at health facilities that receive federal Medicare or Medicaid also will have to be fully vaccinated.

Biden is also signing an executive order to require vaccination for employees of the executive branch and contractors who do business with the federal government — with no option to test out. That covers several million more workers.

Some "exceptional" groups are not, it appears.

Postal Service workers not included in Biden’s mandatory vaccination order, source says

    By Jacob Bogage9:06 p.m.

"U.S. Postal Service workers were not included in Biden’s executive order requiring all federal employees to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to a White House official speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss not-yet-public portions of the president’s plan.

USPS has a separate statutory scheme and is traditionally independent of federal personnel actions like this, the official said, though postal workers would be strongly encouraged to comply with the mandate.

The move exempts a massive chunk of the federal workforce — 644,000 employees and growing as the agency ramps up seasonal hiring — that interacts daily with an equally large swath of the public.

One of the Postal Service’s powerful unions, the American Postal Workers Union, in July criticized the administration’s efforts to require federal workers to be vaccinated and demanded that postal leadership collectively bargain on the issue."
