New U.S. Intelligence Report Doesn’t Provide Definitive Conclusion on Covid-19 Origins

Review followed previous efforts to corral evidence that ended in bureaucratic infighting and failure

    Updated Aug. 24, 2021 9:48 pm ET

"WASHINGTON—A new assessment by U.S. spy agencies of the origins of Covid-19 that was delivered to the White House Tuesday didn’t yield a definitive conclusion on whether the new coronavirus jumped to humans naturally, or via a lab leak, in part because of the lack of detailed information from China, two senior U.S. officials said.

The new assessment, which was ordered by President Biden 90 days ago, highlights the administration’s difficult challenge to wrest more information from Beijing that would shed light on how the global pandemic began.

It underscores the importance of inducing China to share lab records, genomic samples, and other data that could provide further illumination on the origins of the virus, which has killed more than four million people world-wide, current and former officials said.

“It was a deep dive, but you can only go so deep as the situation allows,” one U.S. official said. “If China’s not going to give access to certain data sets, you’re never really going to know.”

China has balked at U.S. and other efforts to provide that information, presenting the Biden administration with the same quandary—how to persuade ....

    Washington (AFP)

"A classified US intelligence report delivered to the White House on Tuesday was inconclusive on the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic, in part due to a lack of information from China, according to US media reports.

The assessment, which was ordered by President Joe Biden 90 days ago, was unable to definitively conclude whether the virus that first emerged in central China had jumped to humans via animals or escaped a highly secure research facility in Wuhan, two US officials familiar with the matter told the Washington Post.

They said parts of the report could be declassified in the coming days.

The debate over the origins of the virus that has killed more than four million people and paralyzed economies worldwide has become increasingly contentious.

When Biden assigned the investigation, he said US intelligence agencies were split over the "two likely scenarios" -- animals or lab.

Former president Donald Trump and his aides had helped fuel the lab-leak theory amid intense criticism over their administration's handling of the world's biggest outbreak, pointing the finger at Beijing, which strongly denies the hypothesis.

Despite Biden's directive that the intelligence community "redouble their efforts" to untangle the origin debate, the 90-day review brought them no closer to consensus, the officials told the Post.

Part of the problem is a lack of detailed information from China, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"If China's not going to give access to certain data sets, you're never really going to know," an official told the Journal on condition of anonymity since the report is not public.

Beijing has rejected calls from the United States and other countries for a renewed origin probe after a heavily politicized visit by a World Health Organization team in January also proved inconclusive and faced criticism for lacking transparency and access.

Pressure has meanwhile increased to evaluate the lab-leak theory more thoroughly.

At the outset of the pandemic, the natural origin hypothesis -- that the virus emerged in bats then passed to humans, likely via an intermediary species -- was widely accepted. But as time has worn on, scientists have not found a virus in either bats or another animal that matches the genetic signature of SARS-CoV-2.

In the face of China's reluctance to open up to outside investigators, experts are increasingly open to considering the theory that the virus might have leaked out of a lab conducting bat coronavirus research in Wuhan, an idea once dismissed as a conspiracy propagated by the US far-right.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has admitted that the global health body's initial probe into Wuhan's virology labs did not go far enough.

But the WHO's call last month for the investigation's second stage to include audits of the labs infuriated Beijing. Vice health minister Zeng Yixin said the plan showed "disrespect for common sense and arrogance towards science.""

This will probably get the chinkies whinging again.

HANOI — The United States will provide an additional 1 million coronavirus vaccine doses to Vietnam, Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday, offering additional aid to a country currently grappling with a fresh coronavirus surge and stubbornly low vaccination rates.
Harris, speaking at the top of a bilateral meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, said that the doses would begin to arrive within the next 24 hours. That brings the total vaccine donation to Vietnam to 6 million doses from the U.S.
In addition to the new vaccine doses, the U.S. will provide $23 million in American Rescue Plan and emergency funding through the Centers for Disease Control and the United States Agency for International Development to help Vietnam expand distribution and access to vaccines, combat the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for future disease threats. The Defense Department is also delivering 77 freezers to store the vaccines throughout the country.

US should invite WHO to probe coronavirus origins at Fort Detrick, UNC

    Xinhua | Updated: 2021-08-26 08:58

"BEIJING - A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson on Wednesday urged the United States to stop political manipulation on the issue of coronavirus origins tracing, saying the United States should invite WHO experts to launch a probe into Fort Detrick and the University of North Carolina (UNC) to find the source of the virus if it is bent on insisting the lab-leak theory.Spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a daily press briefing after the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland wrote to the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), and submitted two non-papers on Fort Detrick and UNC, as well as an open letter signed by netizens demanding an investigation into Fort Detrick.

Wang said China's stand on global origins tracing is consistent and clear, adding the issue is a science-based one, and China always supports and will continue participating in science-based origins tracing.
The conclusions and recommendations of the China-WHO joint study report have been recognized by the international community and the scientific community, and must be respected and implemented, Wang said, adding that future global origins study should and can only be carried out on this basis.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) has received WHO experts twice. It is extremely unlikely that the novel coronavirus was leaked from the WIV -- this is the clear conclusion of the China-WHO joint study report, the spokesperson said. Those who insist that the possibility of a lab-leak cannot be ruled out should investigate Fort Detrick and the UNC in the principle of fairness and justice.

Wang said the international community, including the American public, has long held concerns over the illegal, non-transparent, and unsafe activities of Fort Detrick, citing bio-safety incidents in 2019 that led to the shutting down of the lab and the ensuing outbreaks of illnesses with similar symptoms of COVID-19.

For the UNC, the spokesperson pointed out the Baric team leads the world in researches in this field and has already advanced capabilities to synthesize and modify coronavirus.

"We hope the international community can work hand in hand to resist the backlash of politicization and bring the origins study back to the right track of scientific cooperation," Wang added.
Also on Wednesday, Fu Cong, director-general of the Department of Arms Control of the Foreign Ministry, said the United States, while clamoring for an investigation into other countries' bio-medical labs, is the only country standing in the way of establishing a multilateral verification mechanism under the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).

"I wonder if the US obsession with Chinese biological labs signifies a change in its position on a verification protocol. Simply put, is the US government ready to withdraw its opposition to the negotiations of a verification protocol under the BWC?"

Fu said the litmus test would come as early as next week when the Meetings of the States Parties to the BWC takes place in Geneva. "China will once again call for the restart of negotiations on a verification protocol," Fu added."

2 more COVID-19 deaths in Singapore; 118 new locally transmitted cases as Bugis Junction cluster grows

SINGAPORE: An elderly man and woman have died of COVID-19 complications, becoming the 14th and 15th deaths in August due to the coronavirus.
An 86-year-old Singaporean man who was partially vaccinated against COVID-19 died on Tuesday (Aug 24). He had a history of cancer, cardiomyopathy, chronic kidney disease, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Wednesday.

The man, known as Case 66762, was admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for an unrelated medical condition on Jul 1, and tested negative for COVID-19 "multiple times", said MOH. Another test taken on Jul 18 came back positive for COVID-19.
A 95-year-old Singaporean woman who died on Wednesday was the other fatality reported by MOH. She was not vaccinated and had a history of Alzheimer's disease.
The woman developed symptoms on Aug 5, and tested positive for COVID-19 on Aug 9 after being admitted to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases.
Singapore has reported a total of 52 deaths from the coronavirus.

    118 NEW LOCALLY TRANSMITTED CASES

Singapore reported 118 new locally transmitted COVID-19 infections as of noon on Wednesday, including 26 linked to the cluster at North Coast Lodge dormitory in Woodlands.

Twenty-five of the new cases in the dorm cluster had earlier been placed on quarantine, said MOH. The dormitory cluster now has 112 infections.
Of the remaining 92 new locally transmitted infections, 19 were linked to previous cases and had been placed on quarantine. Another 44 linked infections were detected through surveillance testing.
Twenty-nine infections were not linked to previous cases.
Among the new cases, two were above the age of 70 who were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, and are at risk of serious illness, said MOH.
This was Singapore's highest daily number of locally transmitted cases in more than three weeks, since 131 infections were reported on Jul 30.

There were also two imported cases reported on Wednesday, taking Singapore's daily case count to 120.
As of Wednesday, Singapore has reported a total of 66,812 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Coronavirus Lands Over 100,000 Americans in Hospital for First Time Since January

The Delta variant, vaccine hesitancy and a push back against mask-wearing has driven up COVID-19 hospitalizations in the U.S. to over 100,000 for the first time since late January. The southern U.S. has seen the biggest uptick in hospitalizations where the Washington Post database finds that every single state in the region has a higher per capita rate than the national average. Florida alone has more than 17,000 hospital beds occupied—more than any other state in the country. Texas, with 14,000 hospitalizations, is a close second. The most disturbing figure is the number of pediatric hospitalizations, which have topped 2,000 for the first time in more than a year. On Wednesday, more than 148,000 new infections and 1,100 deaths were reported across the nation.

Lisa Shaw: Presenter's death due to complications of Covid vaccine
    4 hours ago

A radio presenter died due to complications from the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, a coroner has found.

Lisa Shaw, who worked for BBC Radio Newcastle, died at the age of 44 in May after developing headaches a week after getting her first dose of the vaccine.

Newcastle coroner Karen Dilks heard Ms Shaw suffered blood clots in the brain which ultimately led to her death.

The inquest heard the condition linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine was very rare.

The coroner said: "Lisa died due to complications of an AstraZeneca Covid vaccination."

Ms Dilks said Ms Shaw was previously fit and well but concluded that it was "clearly established" that her death was due to a very rare "vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia", a condition which leads to swelling and bleeding of the brain.

    'Severe headache'
Ms Shaw, a mother of one from Consett, received her first dose of the vaccine on 29 April.

On 13 May she was taken by ambulance to University Hospital of North Durham after having a headache for several days.

Covid vaccines and rare clots - what do we know?
How effective is the vaccine, and do I need a booster?

In a statement, Dr John Holmes who treated her said she complained of having a "severe headache shooting and stabbing" across her forehead and behind her eyes.

Tests were carried out and blood clots were found in her brain, prompting her to be moved to the neurology specialist unit at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI).

According to the UK medical regulator, there have been 332 reported cases and 58 reported deaths - after nearly 35 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the UK.

Dr Christopher Johnson, a consultant in anaesthetics and intensive care at the RVI, said Ms Shaw had been conscious for several days and had been treated for the clots with drugs which seemed to be successful.

    'Do the same thing'
But on the evening of 16 May Ms Shaw said the headaches were worse and she had difficulty speaking.

Scans showed she had suffered a haemorrhage in the brain and after her condition deteriorated, part of her skull was removed to try and relieve the pressure inside her head.

Her condition continued to worsen and despite more surgery and treatments, she died on 21 May.

Dr Johnson said doctors were in a daily conference with a national panel about vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia, the condition Ms Shaw was believed to be suffering from.

Asked if he would have changed the treatments given to Ms Shaw, he said: "No."

Dr Johnson said The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) published guidelines on how to treat the condition in July which matched the treatment Ms Shaw received.

"Lisa got all the treatments that were recommended in the order they were recommended," he said.

"If we had the same presentation tomorrow we would do the same thing."

    'Very rare'
Dr Tuomo Polvikoski, a consultant neuro-pathologist who examined Ms Shaw after her death, said given her history of being a fit and healthy woman with no medical problems, it was "surprising" she died of blood clots and bleeding in the brain.

He said "timewise" it "seems most likely" her death was "indeed vaccine induced".

Ms Dilks said the condition was "very rare" but agreed with Dr Polvikoski's findings.

After the hearing, Ms Shaw's family said in a statement: "This is another difficult day in what has been a devastating time for us.

"The death of our beloved Lisa has left a terrible void in our family and in our lives.

"She truly was the most wonderful wife, mum, daughter, sister and friend."

Research on what the vaccines contain ?
Why would anyone need to do that?
It's not some mystery product that someone just found.
It's manufactured, the manufacturer knows exactly what's in it.

So, you don't want to know what's in it, you want to know what the medical interactions are?

Those details are available for as much as we know, it's a new thing so more will be learnt over time. Blood clotting is the obvious one atm, I have a friend who is on blood thinning meds for clotting and he has being advised not to get vaccinated unless the world falls apart around him in which case the vaccine is a lesser evil than the virus. You and your doctor should know what ails you and be able to make a choice based on evidence or potential complications.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

When I was vaccinated I was asked if I was allergic to anything. lucky for me the only thing I am allergic to is hard work, But I am sure if I was allergic to something other than hard work, they would know if that something places me in danger, After the injection we were lead into a separate room where we remained for if I remember correctly was 20 minutes. with paramedics standing by in case someone had a reaction to the vaccine. In the both times that I went out of the hundreds of people there, no one had a reaction .
So I did a search about Penicillin allergy and covid 19 vaccines, and this is what I found.
"I am allergic to penicillin. Can I have a COVID-19 vaccination? Yes you can. Allergy to penicillins is not a contraindication to the Pfizer/BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Moderna or Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. "

plan b i am on warfarin for life, but meds that were given to me put me in grave dager of having a blood clot on my mechanical heart valve.i had to get intouch with my doctor in the uk and told him what tabs.i was given, then told him what my inr.range had droped to,he was horrified and told me to never take them again.
now i try and find out exactly what the meds contain.its easy to find out.even i study what my dog was given before he passed away [i hold myself partly to blame for not doing it.i dont want to go through that again,he was me and the wifes best friend.
B B thanks for that reply about penicillin. but with me taking 12 different tabs a day i have to be carefull.
so all you guys out there check what you are given.

    Firstly, don't be stupid.

The ingredients are publicly available - they wouldn't get approved if no-one knew what was in the fucking things.

Secondly there have been FIVE BILLION vaccinations given so it's nailed on that at least some have those have been given to people taking your meds.

So go and talk to the doctor who prescribed them to you and ask him "Is it safe to take the vaccine?".

    Duh.

looks like it has plateaued and is trending downwards, in addition the recoveries far outnumber the infections taking the strain off the health care system.
    Let's hope it continues.

This particular page doesn't include the number of ATK positive tested numbers, which can be quite significant. Number of deaths are still quite high as well. Here in Phuket, numbers seem to be increasing, with today's 207 (kind of makes a mockery of the original criteria of no more than 90 new infections a week for the 'Sandbox' to continue).

The way it was explained on the Thiger News podcast on YouTube, on a per capita bases Phuket has now more cases than Bangkok at the height of their infections a couple of months ago.
