Covid in Sydney: Military deployed to help enforce lockdown

Australia has deployed hundreds of soldiers to Sydney to help enforce a Covid lockdown.

A Delta outbreak which began in June has produced nearly 3,000 infections and led to nine deaths.

Australian Defence Force soldiers will undergo training on the weekend before beginning unarmed patrols on Monday.

But many have questioned whether the military intervention is necessary, calling it heavy-handed.

The lockdown - in place until at least 28 August - bars people from leaving their home except for essential exercise, shopping, caregiving and other reasons.

Despite five weeks of lockdown, infections in the nation's largest city continue to spread. Officials recorded 170 new cases on Friday.

Soldiers will join police in virus hotspots to ensure people are following the rules, which include a 10km (6.2 miles) travel limit.

State Police Minister David Elliott said it would help because a small minority of Sydneysiders thought "the rules didn't apply to them".

Information provided by health officials indicates the virus is mainly spreading through permitted movement.

The Australian Lawyers Alliance, a civil rights group, called the deployment a "concerning use" of the army in a liberal democracy.

The outbreak has largely affected critical workers and large family groups in the city's poorer and ethnically diverse west and south-west suburbs.
About two million people live there.

Critics say those areas have already faced "targeted" policing measures. They point out restrictions there are harsher than for the rest of Sydney.

"Our people are one of the poorest demographics, and as it is, they already feel picked on and marginalised," said Steve Christou, one local mayor.

"They can't afford to pay the mortgage, the rent, the food or work. Now to throw out the army to enforce lockdown on the streets is going to be a huge issue to these people," he told SBS.

Others have called for the government to increase its vaccine drive and support services for the affected communities.

Australia's rate of vaccination - 17% of the adult population - remains one of the lowest among OECD nations.

I’m sure. It’s just disturbing to me there are so many idiots out there that it comes to having not just the police but the military patrolling.

What I'm upset with the Prayuth government about is three things:

    1. They didn't see that Trump had spent almost 10 billion dollars on vaccines before they had even been developed. Of course, some of those vaccines would turn out to work (Trump's bet). Prayuth placed money on the bet — way too late.

    2. Did Prayuth think that Thailand would be able to survive the pandemic without vaccines when Thailand hadn't been hit hard by it?

    3. Would Thaksin have been like Trump and have sent early orders for vaccines? Of course, guys like Thaksin and Trump (from the business world) know to act quickly.

CDC study shows 74% of people infected in (USA) Massachusetts Covid outbreak were fully vaccinated

    Key Points

    • About three-fourths of people infected in a Massachusetts Covid-19 outbreak were fully vaccinated, according to new data published Friday by the CDC.
    • The new data, published in the U.S. agency’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, also found that fully vaccinated people who get infected carry as much of the virus in their nose as unvaccinated people.

    Some contradictory numbers here:

In a press announcement by the Ministry of Public Health, Director-General of the DDC Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong said that based on statistical assessments of actual patient and fatality numbers following the elevation of preventative measures, an extension of the regulations would bring down daily infection rates as long as they were maintained in tandem with proactive searches for infections and vaccination of risk groups such as senior citizens, the chronically ill and pregnant women, an effort currently being taken by the Ministry of Public Health. He added that with strong cooperation from the public, the daily contraction rate could drop by 20 percent in one month’s time to about 30,000 people a day, from the present number in excess of 40,000 people. The peak of infections is expected to occur in October but should be lessened by up to 25 percent if current measures are maintained and good cooperation is provided. With no regulations, the fatality rate could rise to over 500 people a day.

    WTF!

Will Dr. Opas be publishing a correction, or will he be spending more time with his family?

It would seem that when the PM told us the peak would be in August he was being a tad optimistic.

Meanwhile, Dr. Opas is resetting other expectations: deaths over 500 a day.

The gf works in local government. She has been working with everyone else in her office yesterday and today to create one of these 'field hospitals' in a school building. Rows of brand new beds. There is a clear expectation that things are going to get a lot worse.

    <sigh>

Roughly 97% of new hospitalizations and 99.5% of deaths in the U.S. are among unvaccinated individuals, U.S. health officials repeated this week.

Got in my reservation for a vaccine on the new website that opened up today.

They haven't said what vaccine it is — though since they're opening this up a couple of days after receiving 1.5 million doses of Pfizer from America, here's hoping.

That website has already leaked all the details of sign-ups.

But oddly I can't find the link to the tweet about it that I read earlier.

I don't think Apple should try and defy Darwin.

Apple has yanked Unjected, an app that bills itself as “a safe space for the unvaccinated to come together uncensored through business, friendship, or love,” from the App Store. The company said that Unjected violated its covid-19 policies and tried to get around the App Store review process, which in itself is against Apple guidelines.
Apple took action against Unjected after being contacted by Bloomberg. The outlet published a report on Unjected on Saturday that analyzed how Apple and Google were dealing with the covid-19 vaccine misinformation presented on the app. In an email, Apple confirmed the takedown to Gizmodo on Saturday.
Google warned Unjected’s founders about the misinformation on the app’s recently debuted social feed—which included user-generated false claims that stated vaccines were “experimental mRNA gene modifiers” and “nano-technology microchips”—in mid-July and threatened to remove it if the content wasn’t deleted. The founders complied and removed the social feed, although one told Bloomberg that they planned to reinstate it and the false claims, hoping to “stay under the radar.” The app is still available on the Play Store.

Less than 0.004% of people fully vaccinated against Covid-19 experienced a breakthrough case resulting in hospitalization and less than 0.001% died from the disease, according to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The data highlights what leading health experts across the country have highlighted for months: Covid-19 vaccines are very effective at preventing serious illness and death from Covid-19 and are the country's best shot at slowing the pandemic down and avoiding further suffering.

    <snip>

Most of the breakthrough cases -- about 74% -- occurred among adults 65 or older.

We keep reading that Sputnik is "Safe and Effective", but no-one seems to be able to provide any data to prove it.

BRASILIA, July 29 (Reuters) - Brazil plans to cancel a contract signed in March for 10 million doses of Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said on Thursday, as the South American nation struggles with one of the worst outbreaks in the world.

Queiroga said the move was due to lapsed deadlines in the registration process with Brazilian health regulator Anvisa.

He added that Brazil's national immunization program does not currently need the Russian vaccine, though that could change if Anvisa licenses Sputnik V.

The agreement to import the 10 million doses was signed with Brazilian pharmaceutical company Uniao Quimica (UQFN.UL), which is also planning to manufacture the vaccine locally for export to neighboring countries where Sputnik has been improved.

But the contract required emergency use approval by Anvisa,
a process that has stalled because Uniao Quimica has not provided necessary data on the vaccine, the regulator said.

Sixteen Brazilian state governments requested permits to import the Russian vaccine that were approved under a set of conditions that included testing in Brazil. Anvisa said only four of the states agreed to the conditions.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund, which markets the vaccine developed by Moscow's Gamaleya Institute, and Uniao Quimica did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The president of the Philippines said he didn't care if people who deny the coronavirus vaccine died from the virus.
Rodrigo Duterte said in a national address on Wednesday: "For those who do not want it, well, for all I care, you can die anytime."
He added that he wanted the police to restrict the movement of people who refuse coronavirus vaccines: "To those people who do not want to be vaccinated, I am telling you, don't go out of your house.
"If you go out of your house, I will tell the police to return you to your home. You will be escorted back to your house because you are a walking spreader."
Only 6% of the country is vaccinated, according to Reuters.
Duterte previously threatened to jail people who refuse to get a coronavirus vaccine.
Supply delays have also slowed the vaccination rate in some parts of the country, Bloomberg reported.
