Other parts of the country still see groups of cultural dissonance, despite the place plunging into a worse state than India was a few months ago. People still flocked home during the July Eid! This despite government exhortations not to travel.

The public attitudes are changing, but very slowly, while the pandemic and variants run wildly out of control. Historical cultural influences are not easily overturned.

Even Sinovac offers some protection, just not the same level as mRNA vaccines.

People vaccinated before late February are twice as likely to catch the coronavirus than other inoculated Israelis, according to new research.
“We looked at tens of thousands of people tested in the month of June, alongside data on how long had passed since their second shot, and found that those vaccinated early were more likely to test positive,” Dr. Yotam Shenhar, who headed the research, told The Times of Israel.
Which makes sense since they vaccinated the elderly and vulnerable first, and they are probably more prone to the Delta variant.

    Filthy Russian scum.

A mysterious marketing agency secretly offered to pay social media stars to spread disinformation about Covid-19 vaccines. Their plan failed when the influencers went public about the attempt to recruit them.

"It started with an email" says Mirko Drotschmann, a German YouTuber and journalist.

Mirko normally ignores offers from brands asking him to advertise their products to his more than 1.5 million subscribers. But the sponsorship offer he received in May this year was unlike any other.

An influencer marketing agency called Fazze offered to pay him to promote what it said was leaked information that suggested the death rate among people who had the Pfizer vaccine was almost three times that of the AstraZeneca jab.

    The information provided wasn't true.

It quickly became apparent to Mirko that he was being asked to spread disinformation to undermine public confidence in vaccines in the middle of a pandemic.

"I was shocked," says Mirko "then I was curious, what's behind all that?"

In France, science YouTuber Léo Grasset received a similar offer. The agency offered him 2000 euros if he would take part. Fazze said it was acting for a client who wished to remain anonymous.

"That's a huge red flag" says Léo.

Both Léo and Mirko were appalled by the false claims.

They pretended to be interested in order to try to find out more and were provided with detailed instructions about what they should say in their videos.

In stilted English, the brief instructed them to "Act like you have the passion and interest in this topic."

It told them not to mention the video had a sponsor - and instead pretend they were spontaneously giving advice out of concern for their viewers.

Social media platforms have rules that ban not disclosing that content is sponsored. In France and Germany it's also illegal.

Fazze's brief told influencers to share a story in French newspaper Le Monde about a data leak from the European Medicines Agency.

The story was genuine, but didn't include anything about vaccine deaths. But in this context it would give the false impression that the death rate statistics had come from the leak.

The data the influencers were asked to share had actually been cobbled together from different sources and taken out of context.

It presented the numbers of people who had died in several countries some time after receiving different Covid vaccines. But just because someone dies after having a vaccine doesn't mean they died because they had the vaccine. They could have been killed in a car accident.

In the countries the statistics were from, greater numbers of people had received the Pfizer vaccine at that time, so a higher number of people dying after having a Pfizer jab was to be expected.

"If you don't have any scientific training, you could just say, 'oh, there are these numbers, they are really different. So there must be a link.' But you can make any spurious correlation as you want really," Léo says.

The influencers were also provided with a list of links to share - dubious articles which all used the same set of figures that supposedly showed the Pfzer vaccine was dangerous.

When Léo and Mirko exposed the Fazze campaign on Twitter all the articles, except the Le Monde story, disappeared from the web.

By any measure the disinformation campaign was bungled.

Since Léo and Mirko blew the whistle at least four other influencers in France and Germany have gone public to reveal they also rejected Fazze's attempts to recruit them.

But German journalist, Daniel Laufer, has identified two influencers who may have taken up the offer.

Indian YouTuber Ashkar Techy usually makes jokey videos about cars and dating and Brazilian prankster Everson Zoio, has more than three million Instagram followers.

Each of them posted uncharacteristic videos in which they pushed the same message as the Fazze campaign and shared the fake news links from the agency's brief. Both had also participated in previous Fazze promotions.

After Daniel Laufer contacted them, Everson Zoio and Ashkar Techy removed their videos but didn't answer his questions. The BBC tried to contact both influencers, but they didn't respond.

We tried emailing the people who approached Mirko and Léo. The emails bounced back, not from Fazze, but from the domain of a company called AdNow.

Fazze is a part of AdNow, which is a digital marketing company, registered in both Russia and the UK.

The BBC has made multiple attempts to contact AdNow by phone, email and even a letter couriered to their Moscow headquarters, but they have not responded.

Eventually we managed to contact Ewan Tolladay, one of two directors of the British arm of AdNow - who lives in Durham.

Mr Tolladay said he had very little to do with Fazze - which he said was a joint venture between his fellow director - a Russian man called Stanislav Fesenko - and another person whose identity he didn't know.

He said that he hadn't been a part of the disinformation campaign. He said he hadn't even known Fazze had taken on the contract before the story broke. He couldn't enlighten us on who the mystery client was.

He said that in light of the scandal "we are doing the responsible thing and shutting down AdNow here in the UK". He said Fazze was also being shut down.

We have tried to get Mr Fesenko to talk to us but had no success.

Both the French and German authorities have launched investigations into Fazze's approaches to influencers.

But the identity of the agency's mystery client remains unclear.

There has been speculation about the Russian connections to this scandal and the interests of the Russian state in promoting its own vaccine - Sputnik V.

Omid Nouripour, the foreign policy spokesman for the German Green party has suggested looking to Moscow for the motivation behind the Fazze campaign.

He said: "Bad-mouthing vaccines in the West undermines trust in our democracies and is supposed to increase trust in Russia's vaccines, and there is only one side that benefits and that is the Kremlin."

But in a statement the Russian embassy in London said: "We treat Covid-19 as a global threat and, thus, are not interested in undermining global efforts in the fight against it, with vaccinating people with the Pfizer vaccine as one of the ways to cope with the virus."

While Fazze's campaign was a flop, Léo Grasset believes it won't be the last attempt to use the power of social influencers to spread disinformation.

"If you want to manipulate public opinion, especially for young people, you don't go to TV" says French YouTuber Léo Grasset.

"Just spend the same money on TikTok creators, YouTube creators. The whole ecosystem is perfectly built for maximum efficiency of disinformation right now."

Unbelievably stoopid twats will probably end up prolonging the lockdown.

MELBOURNE, July 25 (Reuters) - Australia's New South Wales logged its second-highest daily increase of the year in locally acquired COVID-19 cases on Sunday amid fears of a wave of new infections after thousands of people joined an anti-lockdown protest.

Application process starts for Japan’s ‘vaccine passports’

Municipalities across Japan on July 26 started accepting applications for “vaccine passports” from people who are fully inoculated against COVID-19 and hope to travel overseas.

In general, applicants need to apply at service windows at the municipal government office that issued their vaccination vouchers. Some offices are only accepting applications sent through mail.

Vaccination vouchers, vaccination records of the two shots and passports must be included in the applications.

The vaccine certificate is an A4-size sheet of paper showing the person’s name, type of vaccine used and the dates of the inoculations. It will be issued free of charge.

The idea is that the certificates will exempt travelers from Japan from quarantine and other anti-virus measures after their arrivals in overseas destinations.

However, the Japanese government is still not making such exemptions for people who enter Japan with vaccine passports issued by other nations.

So far, five countries--Italy, Turkey, Austria, Bulgaria and Poland--have agreed to exempt arriving travelers with the Japanese vaccine certificate from some of their infection-prevention requirements.

Italy, for example, will not require such arrivals to remain isolated for 10 days, while Turkey will not require them to submit a certificate of a negative PCR test.

In South Korea, the Japanese vaccine passport will be accepted as one of the necessary documents to be exempt from quarantine.

Estonia also recognizes the Japanese certificate, but quarantine measures there are not required for travelers, regardless of their vaccination status.

Fauci says US headed in ‘wrong direction’ on coronavirus

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — The United States is in an “unnecessary predicament” of soaring COVID-19 cases fueled by unvaccinated Americans and the virulent delta variant, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert said Sunday.

“We’re going in the wrong direction,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, describing himself as “very frustrated.”

He said recommending that the vaccinated wear masks is “under active consideration” by the government’s leading public health officials. Also, booster shots may be suggested for people with suppressed immune systems who have been vaccinated, Fauci said.

Fauci, who also serves as President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, told CNN’s “State of the Union” that he has taken part in conversations about altering the mask guidelines.

He noted that some local jurisdictions where infection rates are surging, such as Los Angeles County, are already calling on individuals to wear masks in indoor public spaces regardless of vaccination status. Fauci said those local rules are compatible with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation that the vaccinated do not need to wear masks in public.

More than 163 million people, or 49% of the total U.S. population, are fully vaccinated, according to CDC data. Of those eligible for the vaccine, aged 12 and over, the figure rises to 57%.

“This is an issue predominantly among the unvaccinated, which is the reason why we’re out there, practically pleading with the unvaccinated people to go out and get vaccinated,” Fauci said.

Fauci said government experts are reviewing early data as they consider whether to recommend that vaccinated individuals to get booster shots. He suggested that some of the most vulnerable, such as organ transplant and cancer patients, are “likely” to be recommended for booster shots.

He also praised Republicans, including Govs. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas and Ron DeSantis of Florida, and the second-ranking House leader, Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, for encouraging their constituents to get vaccinated. Their states have among the lowest vaccination rates in the country.

“What I would really like to see is more and more of the leaders in those areas that are not vaccinating to get out and speak out and encourage people to get vaccinated,” Fauci said.

Doctors, nurses and other health groups call for mandatory coronavirus vaccinations for all health workers

Medical groups representing millions of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health workers on Monday called for mandatory vaccinations of all U.S. health personnel against the coronavirus, framing the move as a moral imperative as new infections mount sharply.

“We call for all health care and long-term care employers to require their employees to be vaccinated against covid-19,” the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association and 55 other groups wrote in a joint statement shared with The Washington Post. “The health and safety of U.S. workers, families, communities, and the nation depends on it.”

Major delay in Australian government’s Novavax deal, with 51m doses not expected until 2022

Thailand’s worsening Covid outbreak is placing intense pressure on hospitals, forcing doctors to treat patients in parking lots and turn away people who are severely ill.

The country was widely praised for its Covid response last year, when it maintained one of the lowest caseloads in the world. However, there is growing public anger over the government’s recent handling of the pandemic, including its slow and chaotic vaccination campaign.

A third wave began in April, when
infections began to spread in Bangkok nightlife venues, including clubs popular among wealthy businessmen. Since then, cases have spread across prisons, factories, construction sites and densely populated areas of the capital.

In about four months, the country’s total fatalities have grown from fewer than 100 to 4,146. Some have died in their homes because no hospital beds were available, according to medical volunteers. Others have died on the streets of Bangkok, including one person whose body was left on the pavement for hours last week, provoking public outrage.

“The government is still walking behind the Covid,” said Ekapob Laungprasert, who runs a volunteer group, Sai Mai Tongrot (Sai Mai Must Survive), which assists people who have the virus. “They took action after the problems happened. They need to change their strategy and think further ahead. They need to search for quality vaccines and quickly provide them to everybody.

“Thai people are struggling to get vaccines while other countries do a lottery to encourage people to get a vaccine.”

The government has been criticised for not introducing a lockdown months ago, when case numbers were lower. Various restrictions have been introduced in stages, with
stricter measures, including a 9pm curfew, imposed on 12 July across high-risk areas such as Bangkok.

Prof Anucha Apisarnthanarak, chief of the infectious diseases division at Thammasat University, said it was unclear when daily cases would start to fall. On Tuesday, 14,150 cases and 118 deaths were announced.

The real number of cases is difficult to assess because many patients, unable to access testing, are forced to stay at home, said Anucha. “A lot of cases have no appropriate place to shelter them: we don’t have beds in hospital, we don’t have beds in the field hospital. They have to be at home or some other place,” he said.
Infections are now spreading among family members in the home, he added: “Transmission in this situation, where [the] vaccine has not been widely disseminated, can be very alarming and exponential.”

A government rule that hospitals must admit patients who test positive has resulted in facilities capping their daily PCR tests, making them harder for patients to access. Though a home isolation policy has been adopted, hospitals are still required to monitor such patients when resources are already stretched.

On social media, long lines of people can be seen queueing in car parks and tented areas at Bangkok’s testing sites. At a drive-through testing centre in Nakhon Pathom, a city in central Thailand, lines of cars stretched for 1km beyond the hospital, according to reports by Matichon newspaper.

Sai Mai Must Survive has seen a sharp rise in requests for help. Early in June the group would receive about 30 calls each day, but this has now risen to 200. The group provides medical supplies to people in their homes, such as oxygen monitors and tanks.

Patients with severe illness are taken to hospital, Ekapob said, but some are refused admission. “Maybe there are two out of 10 cases that the hospital could not take them in because of no bed available and they died at home,” he said.

Images on social media show the pressure facing medical staff. On Monday, Rachapiphat hospital in Bangkok posted a photo on Facebook of its car park, where beds had been set up for patients from its emergency department. Last week, similar images were shared of Saraburi hospital, where patients were waiting on beds in an outdoor parking area.

The worsening outbreak has heightened anger over the country’s vaccine rollout. On Monday, hundreds of academics and media workers issued a joint statement calling for greater transparency regarding vaccine contracts – including details of who was receiving which jabs, and when doses were to be delivered to the country.

About 5% of the Thai population is fully vaccinated, while 17% have received one dose according to Our World in Data.

The statement follows a leaked letter by AstraZeneca, which said it would supply about 6m doses a month to Thailand. This appeared to contradict a claim by the government that it was due to receive 10m doses.

Thailand is a regional hub for production for the AstraZeneca vaccine. However, production by the Royal-owned company BioScience, which has not previously produced vaccines, has suffered delays.

A flareup in coronavirus cases in Phuket, the country’s first tourism hotspot to waive quarantine for vaccinated foreign visitors, is threatening to scuttle the experiment seen as a model for other tourism-reliant nations to reopen borders.

The resort island reported 125 new Covid-19 cases during the week ending July 27, higher than the government-set threshold of 90 weekly cases that could trigger a temporary suspension of the program. In response, local authorities closed public schools and shopping malls and banned gatherings of more than 100 people from Tuesday to stem the virus from spreading further.

The majority of new cases were among local residents, and all the high-risk contacts on the island have been isolated to prevent further spread, officials said. Only 26 vaccinated visitors out of the more than 11,800 have tested positive for the virus since the so-called Phuket Sandbox was launched on July 1, they said.

The Covid resurgence in Phuket mirrors the situation elsewhere in Thailand and the broader Southeast Asian region, where authorities are struggling to contain the spread fuelled by the more contagious delta variant. Any setback to the Phuket quarantine-free travel would hurt the government’s plan to expand the model to more islands and beach resorts to rescue the vital tourism industry.

It may still be too early to suspend the Phuket model as authorities are watching for more signs of a wider spread of infections. About 70% of Phuket’s population are fully inoculated, compared to about 5% nationwide, official data showed.

“We’re entering a tightening mode and reducing local activities on the island, but we have several circuit breakers in place before there’s a suspension to the reopening programme,” said Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, president of the Tourism Council of Phuket. “With the surge in infections, our focus right now is to assess the situation day-by-day and week-by-week.”

The country has seen an unprecedented surge in Covid infections and deaths after the emergence of a third wave in early April. Key economic centres, including Bangkok, have been put under strict rules prohibiting inter-provincial travel and curbing most business operations.

Besides the 90 weekly-case limit, other triggers for Phuket Sandbox suspension include the detection of infections in all three districts on the island or more than six sub-districts, the identification of more than three clusters, the uncontrollable spread of new variants, and the use of 80% of hospital capacity.

Authorities will first restrict the travel routes or put in place a temporary ban on tourists leaving hotels before considering a total suspension, according to Mr Thaneth. Officials will review the situation in coming days and decide if additional tightening measures are needed, he said.

Humans are a recalcitrant bunch. Just saw on the news that only half of the health workers at the University of Florida hospital are vaccinated. Florida of course is where the virus is surging again in the USA. You would think that people working in the hospital that see the suffering would want to get vaccinated early on, but that is not the case.

^ That is what concerns me.
We had a family discussion today about vaccination and when it can be arranged and the general decision was that we should wait another month or two to learn more about whether it is worth it or not.
As we are housebound I doubt there is much risk involved.

    And they aren't hospitalised?
