The efficacy rate is the percentage of people who will not get infected.

In addition to this, there is the issue of whether or not the vaccine prevents serious illness, hospitalisation and/or death.

The numbers given here are too small to be statistically significant anyway.

<400 people out of several million doesn't really tell you anything.

Must have borrowed the chinky recipe.

HAVANA, June 19 (Reuters) - Cuba's Soberana 2 vaccine candidate has shown 62% efficacy with just two of its three doses, state-run biopharmaceutical corporation BioCubaFarma said on Saturday, citing preliminary data from late phase trials.

Public health official warn of new “fourth wave” in Thailand in work camps and factories

Officials at the Thai Ministry of Public Health have warned the government that a new “fourth wave” of the Covid-19 pandemic could be imminent unless action was taken, a source told Thai Enquirer on Monday.

Thailand is currently in the midst of the third wave of the pandemic with over 180,000 infections and over 1,500 deaths since it began on April 1.

The government has stepped up its lagging vaccine program and imposed a partial lockdown as a response, but infection numbers remain high.

The third wave began in entertainment venues in the capital and spread throughout Bangkok. It was exacerbated by the Songkran holidays which spread the disease throughout the country.

Now officials are warning that a new fourth wave of the virus, fueled by the extra-transmissible Delta variant of the disease, could spark a new chapter in the pandemic in Thailand.

“We’re seeing increased numbers of Delta-type infections in work camps and construction sites across the central region,” a public health official told Thai Enquirer by phone.

“If further action is not taken, we can see a fourth wave of this disease and it will spread quickly in these unprotected sites,” he said on condition of anonymity.

According to the source, casualty numbers have so far been low in the work camp because the demographics usually skew towards younger patients who were extremely healthy.

“But the Delta variant can spread quickly and if it keeps jumping from camp to camp it’s only a matter of time before it hits the general population, then we will have a disaster.”

Officials at the Ministry of Public Health have informed the minister and the covid administration centre that restrictions must be put in place at the camp and employers must be pressured to introduce sanitation and safety precautions.

“We are already seeing cases from the camps jump to factories causing several to shut down. This is a problem that we need to address and cooperate on immediately.”

With cases rising, Russian Ministry of Health is planning for Covid-19 re-vaccinations, as antibodies wane in early jab recipients

The Russian Ministry of Health has begun preparing a Covid-19 revaccination program for those whose antibody levels have dropped to insufficient levels, as the country looks to take control over the recent rapid rise in cases.

That's according to Moscow daily Kommersant, which revealed that Health Minister Mikhail Murashko has promised to publish recommendations on the timing of revaccination as early as this week.

The plan to revaccinate those who received the jab some time ago has also been backed by Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin, who wrote on a blog that it is now "vital" to start giving the inoculated a third dose. As Russia began public trials of the Sputnik V jab last autumn, some early recipients are now into their ninth month, and their protection levels may be slipping.

"We will work with the government so that they promptly decide on the timing and technology," Sobyanin wrote on his blog.

Revaccination has also been supported by the Kremlin, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling it "inevitable."

In recent weeks, Covid-19 has been on the rise within Russia, and individual regions are starting to implement their own measures to encourage jab uptake. In Moscow, Sobyanin ordered compulsory inoculation for those who work in the service sector, such as the transport industry, fitness clubs, and banks.

Those who refuse could be put on unpaid leave until the end of the pandemic.

Coronavirus may have been spreading since Wuhan Military Games last October

By George Liao, Taiwan News, Staff Writer 2020/05/12 21:35

"TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The world is beginning to reexamine when COVID-19 first broke out after a French athlete broke the news that she suspects she contracted it while participating in an athletic event in Wuhan, China in Oct. 2019 — two months earlier than China first acknowledged confirmed cases to the WHO, CNA reported on Monday (May 11). According to a report by Radio Free Asia (RFA), French pentathlon world champion Elodie Clouvel said that when she and her boyfriend Valentin Belaud took part in the 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan in last October, many French athletes, including herself, fell ill. At the time they all assumed it to be the flu, but she said that some of them were quite sick.

She went on to say that she had recently visited a military doctor who told her she may have had coronavirus, as many on the French team had been ill at the same time, according to CNA.

The RFA report pointed out that former Italian fencing Olympian Matteo Tagliariol also said that when he participated in the Military World Games, he and five roommates all got sick with symptoms often seen in COVID-19 patients and experienced a long recovery time afterward. He said his fever and difficulty breathing continued even a week after returning home.

Antibiotics did not work, and it took three weeks for him to recover. His son and partner also fell ill; then, a couple of months later, the coronavirus outbreak made the news.

Several Swedish athletes were also reportedly unwell, including swimmer Raphael Stacchiotti. These suspected cases support the view of some Swedish epidemiologists that the virus may have been spreading in Sweden as early as November last year.

Nearly 10,000 athletes from 100 countries participated in the Wuhan sporting event. The international medical journal “Infection, Genetics and Evolution” on May 5 published a British study on its website indicating that COVID-19 may have already been spreading rampantly between Oct. 6 and Dec. 11, according to CNA.

Global COVID-19 death toll exceeds 4 million.

It took over a year for the COVID-19 death toll to hit 2 million, while the next 2 million were recorded in just 166 days, according to a Reuters analysis.

The top five countries by total number of deaths – the United States, Brazil, India, Russia and Mexico – represent about 50% of all deaths in the world, while Peru, Hungary, Bosnia, the Czech Republic and Gibraltar have the highest death rates when adjusted for population. (Graphic on global cases and deaths)

Countries in Latin America are facing their worst outbreak since March, with 43 of every 100 infections in the world being reported in the region, according to a Reuters analysis. The top nine countries reporting the most deaths per capita over the last week were all in Latin America.

The highly contagious delta variant is the fastest and fittest coronavirus strain yet, and it will “pick off” the most vulnerable people, especially in places with low Covid-19 vaccination rates, World Health Organization officials warned Monday.

Delta, first identified in India, has the potential “to be more lethal because it’s more efficient in the way it transmits between humans and it will eventually find those vulnerable individuals who will become severely ill, have to be hospitalized and potentially die,” Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO’s health emergencies program, said during a news conference.

Hungarians are starting to realise the chinky shit doesn't work.

Hungary’s Sinopharm Controversy Gaining Heat Over Low Antibody Tests
    Tamás Vaski 2021.06.21.

After five months of use in Hungary, there is still controversy surrounding the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine. While the government continues to promote its efficacy, many people are taking matters into their own hands, finding that two inoculations do not always lead to the development of antibodies. Semmelweis University rector Béla Merkely continues to defend the vaccine, but the criticism is rapidly increasing.

Since its establishment, the private Facebook group called “Vaccinated with Sinopharm with Negative Laboratory Test Results,” has grown to host five thousand members. The organization continues to call for government officials or health experts to do something about the lack of antibodies they have after two vaccinations with Sinopharm.

Semmelweis University rector Béla Merkely is a vocal supporter of Sinopharm who has stated that the results of personal antibody testing kits cannot be trusted. A cardiologist by profession, Merkely stands by his assertion that different types of immunity develop depending on various vaccinations and infections, thus making it difficult to compare them through antibody levels alone.

Merkely emphasized that following vaccination, the number of antibodies deteriorates, while memory cells “initiate cell immunity,” if necessary. He is confident that regardless of immunity levels,

We need to get those two vaccinations in our shoulders, and once we have them, we need to lay back, and not get tested for antibodies.”

The rector has even offered free, special tests at Semmelweis University for people who tested negative for antibodies two weeks after their second inoculation.

They will be measuring antibodies through blood tests, and every participant must bring their vaccination documents and copies of their immunity tests. Those who wish to be tested can register at antitest@semmelweiskft.hu.

One retired rheumatologist, Hajnalka Bodó, told 24.hu that she had written to Merkely stating that she had taken three antibody tests after being fully vaccinated with Sinopharm in March, and all three of her tests came back negative.

Biologist Balázs Sarkadi told Telex in April that “we are increasingly certain that antibodies do in fact show how effective a vaccine is. It appears quite safe that if antibodies against the virus’ spike protein appear, they will provide good protection.”

Bodó raised the question in her letter of whether she can get a Pfizer vaccination, and reminded the rector of his previous statement that they have yet to find someone at the university who has received both doses of Sinopharm and not had antibody immunity.

In fact, one of the tests Bodó took followed a professional laboratory test, which Merkely has described as the only credible type of test, however even here the results came back negative. In his response, the rector repeated his claim that the results of antibody tests do not provide answers to protection against Covid.

Bodó asked what test she should take to determine whether she is protected or not, but to this she did not receive a response.

Virologist and professor at the University of Szeged Ernő Duda told Szabad Európa that it is best not to wait for the government, and that if people do not have antibodies following their vaccinations they should get vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine.

Duda disagrees with Merkely’s assertion that protection cannot be measured. On the contrary, he believes that the level of neutralizing antibodies must be tested.

He does not consider it a problem if a minimal number of people have low antibody levels, but if half of the individuals inoculated with a certain vaccine have not developed the necessary amount of antibodies, then that’s a problem.

With every vaccine, even with Pfizer, there are certain vaccinated individuals who do not develop immunity, or only have very low levels of immunity, but this cannot be determined from the outside, it must be measured.”

Duda has even related the planned production of the Chinese vaccine in Debrecen’s upcoming vaccine factory as the employment of primitive technology. He is certain that for the same amount of money BioNTech could open a factory in Hungary: "This is like if they would start producing Ford Model T-s at a Mercedes factory.”

The virologist also raised the question of why Hungary included elderly people in its Sinopharm vaccinations when they were not included in significant numbers for the vaccine’s clinical trials. The National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition (OGYÉI) no doubt saw this before providing a license.

^Surely the proof is in the increasing number of countries who, having used Chinese vaccines on a large scale, are now reporting surges in infection. Bahrain Peru etc etc..

The delta variant can be attacked by a country with co-ordinated control and vaccination measures. Attempts to overcome weak immunity in Chinese vaccines might be treatable with alternative vaccine booster shots, but this is a new, untested approach.

Third COVID shot may be required

THAILAND: The Public Health Ministry is speeding up a study looking into the need for a third COVID-19 vaccine shot for people who are fully vaccinated as certain coronavirus variants are more infectious than others.

Along with this study, a ministry committee is tasked with assessing whether it is safe for people to be jabbed using different vaccine brands after the initial first shot is given, said Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control (DDC) yesterday (June 21).

Dr Opas, however, insisted it was still too soon to say whether a booster shot is actually needed and if the shot can come from a different manufacturer.

“Knowledge [about the virus and the vaccines is updated] constantly so we need to wait until we have sufficient information to support any new decisions to make,” he said. “We have a team that is following up on this and will decide what will be the most suitable [for Thailand’s situation].”

Dr Opas was responding to questions over the need for a booster shot for vaccine recipients in Thailand and whether it could come from a different brand.

He said the ministry’s study is similar to one being conducted by a team led by Dr Yong Poovorawan, head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University.

The number of people in Thailand infected with the Delta coronavirus variant, which first emerged in India, is increasing and likely to replace the Alpha variant, first identified in Britain, as the dominant strain causing infections, Dr Yong said.

Citing findings from a new study published by the British medical journal The Lancet on June 14, he said a considerably higher level of immune response to a COVID-19 vaccine is needed as an efficient defence against the Delta variant.

Both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines were cited in this study, he said, adding a study carried out in Scotland showed they were less effective in preventing infections caused by the Delta variant.

Fourteen days after a second shot, the Pfizer vaccine was found to be 79% effective in preventing Delta variant infections, while the AstraZeneca vaccine was 60% effective against the strain, Dr Yong said.

In a similar situation, those vaccines were found to be up to 92% and 73% effective against the Alpha variant, he said.

“While most cases here are now found to be of the Alpha variant, the Delta variant will in the next few months dominate in Thailand, given the [mutation] of this particular virus variant,” Dr Yong said.

Thailand may have to shorten the period between first and second AstraZeneca shots to mitigate the severity expected to be caused by the Delta variant, he said.

As for other COVID-19 vaccines that induce lower rates of immune responses, he said, third shots may need to be used as boosters while the kingdom waits for new vaccines to be developed to specifically deal with the Delta variant.

“In the meantime, Thailand needs to closely monitor how each existing coronavirus variant is spreading to keep track of them all, especially the fast-spreading Delta variant,” Dr Yong said.

In response to growing public concern over lower immune responses induced by COVID-19 vaccines, Dr Opas said the ministry is also monitoring information taken from the ongoing mass vaccination drive.

The government is in talks with vaccine suppliers but some of these companies do not want to disclose too much information about vaccine deals, he said.

However, everyone in the country will be vaccinated as promised, Dr Yong said.

Japan has agreed to donate AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses to Thailand, which are expected to arrive next month, said Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul yesterday.

The exact amount remains unconfirmed, he said.

When asked how confident he was in the government’s plan to reopen the country in 120 days, Mr Anutin said the decision is up to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) and the ministry will work to support the CCSA.

He said Thailand has so far secured 8.5 million more doses from AstraZeneca and Sinovac this month alone, up from the initial target of 6 million.

I know lots of people that have had their third chinky shot, so they should have some workable numbers soon.

However they are offering people an alternative vaccine for the third dose, so that needs to be taken into account.

I mean two chinky shots + a third chinky shots is likely to produce an inferior result to two chinky shots + a decent vaccine.

    China's COVID vaccine fail

Multiple countries that eagerly inoculated their people with China's COVID vaccines face devastating new case surges.

Why it matters: This revelation undermines China’s vaccine diplomacy, which Beijing has prioritized in the developing world to win influence and commercial deals.

    • China loved the contrast with the U.S., which has been slow in allocating surplus vaccines abroad.
    • Now, developing countries are likely to look increasingly to the West, and not to Beijing, for vaccines.

"In the Seychelles, Chile, Bahrain and Mongolia, 50 to 68 percent of the populations have been fully inoculated, outpacing the United States," the N.Y. Times reports.

    • "All four ranked among the top 10 countries with the worst Covid outbreaks as recently as last week."
    • "And all four are mostly using shots made by two Chinese vaccine makers, Sinopharm and Sinovac Biotech."

By comparison, Israel used Pfizer and has 4.95 cases per million people, versus the Seychelles at 716 per million.

The bottom line: China has been offering countries tens of millions of vaccine doses.

    • But if people in these countries don’t want the shots, the U.S. could be back in the driver’s seat on vaccine diplomacy.

So the bloke who obviously took a backhander to give ThaiBev some vaccines got fucked over. Will he be investigated for corruption? *

The scandal erupted after a copy of a dispatch from the Interior Ministry telling the governor of every province to facilitate Covid-19 vaccination for 43,201 employees of ThaiBev and their 28,244 family members in Bangkok and 76 provinces was circulated online.

The letter enraged many people who are still waiting to be informed when they will get a vaccination. Criticism grew that the government could be playing favourites by putting the needs of the conglomerate over ordinary citizens.

Interior permanent secretary Chatchai Promlert denied favouritism. When asked whether the approval was appropriate as millions of people across the country have yet to receive jabs, Mr Chatchai said his action was lawful.

He also said his approval was in compliance with the guidelines of the National Communicable Diseases Committee.

Under the guidelines dated May 18, the public and private sectors can request vaccine doses for their personnel, especially in at-risk areas.

Mr Chatchai also said that many other organisations in the public and private sectors are requesting vaccine support, including the Federation of Thai Industries.

Despite Mr Chatchai's clarification, the ministry made an abrupt U-turn on Monday cancelling its earlier approval and order for provincial governors to facilitate vaccination for staff of the SET-listed company.
    * Rhetorical question.

    Jab drive far too opaque

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the Phuket sandbox tourism scheme that sees the island reopen on July 1, followed by a trio of destinations in the Gulf of Thailand -- Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao -- on July 15, allowing in fully vaccinated tourists from some countries.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said the reopening was pushed by local entrepreneurs after the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) agreed in principle with the plan on June 18.

Mr Anucha insisted disease control measures and close monitoring will remain in place as required by the CCSA. The reopening scheme would be scrapped if there are more than 90 infections reported per week in tourism areas.

He said vaccinated foreign visitors are allowed to travel to Phuket without state quarantine requirements.

However, they are required to stay in Phuket for 14 days before travelling to other provinces in Thailand. If they stay in Phuket for fewer than 14 days, they are required to fly back via a direct flight.

Those who travel to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are required to travel only via a "sealed" route scheme. For the first three days, they must stay in approved hotels.

They can travel along the sealed routes between days 4-7, then from days 8-15 they can travel to the other two islands.

Mr Anucha said the Tourism and Sports Ministry is responsible for the reopening of other tourism areas. The ministry advised local agencies and companies to come up with their own reopening plans before submitting proposals to the CCSA.

As many organisations have expressed doubts about the government's declaration to reopen the country by mid-October, Mr Anucha said the premier acknowledged such concerns.

Mr Anucha cited the premier's statement that the government needs to strike a balance between the economy, public health and infection control.
