Me too. I am self-medicating with gin. I find it most effective when administered in a mixed dose with a splash of dry vermouth.

    Potentially big news for some.

There is a new map with lots of Yellow Zones and they are allowed to "open as normal". They have not mentioned alcohol still being banned.

Some are taking this to mean the alcohol ban in restaurants is being lifted but I suspect some clarification might be needed.

    Bars and Nightclubs remain closed.

So read this as you will:

In yellow zones, crowd activities must not gather more than 200 people. Restaurants, schools, shopping centres and department stores can operate as usual. Sports facilities can open with limited spectators.

In all zones, people must wear face masks outside their homes and entertainment venues remain closed.
I assume provinces will as is the norm make up their own rules about people travelling from other, possibly dark red provinces.

After SEA's whinging last week about the West supposedly hogging all the vaccines, you wonder what their excuse is for not buying them when they are clearly still available?

The Biden administration, planning for the possibility that Americans could need booster shots of the coronavirus vaccine, has agreed to buy an additional 200 million doses from the drugmaker Moderna with the option to include any developed to fight variants as well as pediatric doses.
The purchase, with delivery expected to begin this fall and continue into next year, gives the administration the flexibility to administer booster shots if they prove necessary, and to inoculate children under 12 if the Food and Drug Administration authorizes vaccination for that age group, according to two administration officials not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The government plans to administer about 10 million Covid-19 vaccine doses next month, with Bangkok to get the largest share and at least 70% of people in Phuket to receive their second jab, according to a senior spokesman.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Friday the centre expected to receive 10 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine in July.

Elderly people and those with chronic illnesses who had already registered for vaccination via the Mor Prom platform would be the first to receive them.

Bangkok would get at least 2.5 million doses.

Four other provinces were also being given priority.

They were the capital's adjacent provinces of Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani, which would receive 600,000 doses in total. Phuket, which will reopen to foreign tourists first, scheduled for July 1, would get another 200,000 doses.

Between them, they would get about 30% of the 10 million doses, Dr Taweesilp said.

The next priority would be 23 provinces that border neighbouring countries, are maximum Covid-29 control zones, or must cope with post-outbreak situations, Dr Taweesilp said.

They were Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Tak, Nong Khai, Sa Kaeo, Ranong, Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, Songkhla, Trang, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ayutthaya, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Buri Ram, Surat Thani (Koh Samui), Phangnga and Krabi.

They would receive altogether 2.5 million doses, or 25% of the 10 million doses.

The other 49 provinces would receive 3.5 million doses (35%), or about 70,000 doses each.

About 1 million doses (10%) would go to central inoculation stations, government organisations and to responses to outbreaks.

Dr Taweesilp also said the CCSA had changed its Covid-19 vaccine procurement plan from 100 million doses this year to 150 million doses by the end of next year.

The government had already either acquired or reserved 105.5 million doses - 61 million of AstraZeneca vaccine, 19.5 million of Sinovac, 20 million of Pfizer-BioNTech and 5 million of Johnson & Johnson's vaccine, he said.

The government would additionally order another 28 million doses from Sinovac and 22 million doses from other producers.

The increase in purchases would cope with mutations of the virus and the possible need for a booster third-shot of vaccine, Dr Taweesilp said.

Sometimes I wonder who is worse?!? The Brits or the Chinese?

Thank you, Boris! For the Delta variant in Great Britain and soon also in the rest of Europe. Without the cynicism of the British Prime Minister, the particularly contagious Covid mutation could not have spread so quickly in the kingdom. At the beginning of April it was clear that the Europeans would also face a high risk.
Downing Street refused to put India on its red list of entry restrictions. The reason: Johnson was planning a trip to see his Indian counterpart Modi. The ruler of “Global Britain” wanted to wave to the cameras in New Delhi with a billion-dollar trade agreement.

I hope they are quarantining people arriving by land crossing as well.

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia reported 20 deaths from Covid-19 on Saturday, a record for a single day, as the country detected its first Delta variant cases and authorities urged people to be vigilant.

The country had recorded one of the world’s smallest Covid-19 caseloads — only a few dozen up to February of this year. But the outbreak first detected in late February has caused infections to climb to 42,052 cases with 414 deaths.

"Please continue to be vigilant by practising hygiene, social distancing and not leaving your homes unnecessarily. Our country and the world continue to be plagued by the Covid 19 pandemic," the Communicable Disease Control Department said in a statement posted on Facebook on Saturday.

The Ministry of Health also reported seven cases of the Delta variant of the coronavirus among travellers by land from Thailand.

"Every one must continue to be vigilant," Or Vandine, secretary of state and health ministry spokeswoman, said in a tweet.

    The Thai version of "reassurance".

The plan to reopen the country comes with conditions, with a major requirement that only provinces that have vaccinated 70% of their population will be allowed to open completely, according to a Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) meeting.

In addition, the Phuket sandbox tourism model could be paused on short notice if infections spike to 90 cases per week.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday announced a 120-day deadline for the country to reopen to international tourists and the return of normal business conditions.

However, at a CCSA meeting on Friday, the body noted the mid-October goal for reopening might not be achieved nationwide.

"We learned from our first failed attempt to reopen Phuket to tourists last year that such a plan should have mutual agreement from the local community. The provincial government should make the evaluation on whether the province is ready to open to international tourists," said Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Mr Phiphat said the Phuket sandbox will be the model for other provinces to follow, meaning each province must have 70% of its population vaccinated and 100% of workers in the service sector inoculated.

Each province must set up an administration centre for reopening with the help of the Tourism and Sports Ministry and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to follow strict procedures, he said.

The CCSA meeting also approved in principle opening the sealed routes on three islands -- Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao -- to join the reopening plan from July 15.

However, tourists who want to visit these islands have to follow additional restrictions: they must stay at alternative local quarantine hotels and spend the first three days on the hotel premises before being permitted to travel via sealed routes on Samui between days 4 to 7. They can hop to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao from days 8 to 14.

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the prohibition against Thais and those who have permanent residency in Thailand has also been removed from the Phuket sandbox.

However, Thai travellers who went abroad to receive Covid-19 vaccines and want to enter via Phuket must be vaccinated at least 14 days prior to arrival.

"There are no restrictions for Thais. However, inbound passengers, regardless of nationality, must get inoculated 14 days prior to arriving. They must also have been in low- to medium-risk countries at least 21 days before landing here," said Mr Yuthasak.

The list of low- and medium-risk countries will be regularly updated every two weeks by the Public Health Ministry, he said.

The Phuket sandbox can also be cancelled if the number of new infections surges to 90 per week.

Mr Yuthasak said 18 airlines are ready to fly to Phuket, offering roughly 200 flights. The number of booked seats stands at 6,789, but the TAT estimates it will rise to 9,000-10,000.

Single-day high COVID deaths in Cambodia

Cambodia has reported a single-day record of 20 deaths from COVID-19, with the country detecting its first Delta variant cases and authorities urging people to be vigilant.

The Southeast Asian nation has recorded one of the world's smallest COVID-19 caseloads, but the outbreak that was first detected in late February has caused infections to climb to 42,052 cases, with a total of 414 deaths.

Shenzhen airport tightens curbs as China logs 30 new Covid cases

BEIJING: The airport in China’s southern city of Shenzhen said today that anyone entering the premises must show a negative virus test taken within 48 hours before entry.

The instruction posted on the airport’s official WeChat page follows the outbreak of new cases in southern China since late May which has seen lockdowns in certain neighbourhoods and the cancellation of flights.

China reported 30 new confirmed Covid-19 cases on the mainland for June 18, up from 23 infections a day earlier, the country’s health authority said today.

Of the new cases, six were local infections in southern Guangdong province, while the rest were imported cases, the National Health Commission said.

Shenzhen airport has previously ordered residents of the southern cities of Guangzhou or Foshan to show a negative virus test result before they can depart.

Foshan Shadi Airport cancelled all flights and suspended operations from June 12-22, according to a post on the Weibo social media account of the Foshan municipal government’s information office.

The number of new asymptomatic infections rose to 42 from 25 a day earlier. China does not classify these as confirmed cases.

Total confirmed Covid-19 cases in mainland China stood at 91,564 at the end of June 18, with the death toll unchanged at 4,636.

Thai Authorities Plan to Administer 10 Million Doses of COVID-19 Vaccines in July

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) reports that the government plans to administer about 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines next month, as the CCSA expects to receive 10 million doses in July.

Hundreds of vaccinated Indonesian health workers get Covid-19, dozens in hospital

More than 350 doctors and medical workers have caught COVID-19 in Indonesia despite being vaccinated with Sinovac and dozens have been hospitalised, officials said, as concerns grow about the efficacy of some vaccines against more infectious variants.

Most of the workers were asymptomatic and self-isolating at home, said Badai Ismoyo, head of the health office in the district of Kudus in central Java, but dozens were in hospital with high fevers and falling oxygen-saturation levels.

Kudus, which has about 5,000 healthcare workers, is battling an outbreak believed to be driven by the more transmissible Delta variant, which has raised its bed occupancy rates above 90%.

Designated as a priority group, healthcare workers were among the first to be vaccinated when inoculations began in January.

Almost all have received the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac, the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) says.

While the number of Indonesian healthcare workers dying from COVID-19 has dropped sharply from 158 in January to 13 in May, according to data initiative group LaporCOVID-19, public health experts say the Java hospitalisations are cause for concern.

“The data shows they have the Delta variant (in Kudus) so it is no surprise that the breakthrough infection is higher than before, because, as we know, the majority of healthcare workers in Indonesia got Sinovac, and we still don’t know yet how effective it is in the real world against the Delta variant,” said Dicky Budiman, an epidemiologist at Australia’s Griffith University.

A spokesperson from Sinovac was not immediately available for comment on the efficacy of the Chinese firm’s CoronaVac against newer variants of the virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) approved emergency use of Sinovac’s vaccine this month, saying results showed it prevented symptomatic disease in 51% of recipients and prevented severe COVID-19 and hospital stays. read more

As Indonesia grappled with one of Asia’s worst outbreaks, with over 1.9 million infections and 53,000 deaths, its doctors and nurses have suffered a heavy toll of 946 deaths.

Many are now experiencing pandemic fatigue and taking a less vigilant approach to health protocols after being vaccinated, said Lenny Ekawati, from the independent health-linked data group LaporCOVID-19.

Across Indonesia, at least five doctors and one nurse have died from COVID-19 despite being vaccinated, according to LaporCOVID-19, although one had only received a first shot.

Siti Nadia Tarmizi, a senior health ministry official, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on how many doctors have died since the vaccination program began.

In Kudus, one senior doctor has died, said IDI.

Nadia said there had been no deaths in Kudus since a new outbreak began in the past several weeks among medical workers and that those who contracted COVID-19 have had mild symptoms.

In Jakarta, the capital, radiologist Dr Prijo Sidipratomo told Reuters he knew of at least half a dozen doctors hospitalised with COVID-19 in the past month despite being vaccinated, with one now being treated in an ICU.

“It is alarming for us because we cannot rely on vaccinations only,” he said, urging people to take precautions.

Weeks after the Muslim Eid Al-Fitr holidays, Indonesia has experienced a surge in cases, with the positivity rate exceeding 23% on Wednesday and daily cases nearing 10,000, its highest since late February.

In its latest report, the WHO urged Indonesia to tighten its lockdown amid increased transmission and a surge in bed occupancy rates.

Indonesia faces a number of issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. A population around 275 M by recent estimates make it one of the top 5 populated countries in the world.
Despite recent economic growth, the country overall is designated as a developing society. It has few of the social safety networks and infrastructure capabilities of first world developed countries.
Culturally, a significant (90%) of the population are Muslims. The social norms in this predominantly religious section of people need to be understood before they can be critiqued. Despite a technically secular, democratic form of government, the Islamic majority cannot be ignored.

Bali, where I live has a predominantly Hindu population where 90% of locals are adherents to this religious group.
Despite such anomalies, the followers of Islam can be divided into the majority of moderate Muslim followers, and a smaller, but vociferous element of more radical exponents of the faith, Aceh being one such semi autonomous province in the far north of the country.

I have some experience of wealthy middle eastern Muslim countries, and also have the benefit living in more moderate Muslim dominated parts of Indonesia. When I lived in South Sumatra, I enjoyed the most welcoming and kindly people I have ever experienced. All were moderate Muslims by faith. Some western influences were present, but most of the population were adherents to the daily norms of their faith system. I never found it obtrusive or awkward to live there.
Many who come from predominantly western democracies, will find that uncomfortable to understand or accept.

The religious undertones in both Muslim, and Hindu society may be difficult to understand and accept, but having hundreds of people slavishly walking together in order to mark a Hindu funeral or festival, is perfectly normal, as is the Eid migratory celebration at the end of Ramadan, for the Muslim community. Many of them find pandemic restrictions placed by a predominantly western global response, highly confusing and unusual.

These ‘normal’ festivities are completely acceptable to them, and the struggle to come to terms with the conformity so readily accepted by the developed world.

Its like asking Thai folk not to throw takeaway packaging out of the car window, or expecting them to not burn waste at dusk in rural areas, just to deter mosquitos. (Most rural Thai communities don’t have local authority sponsored waste collections).

I ask fellow westerners to try and understand the different experiences in Asian communities, instead of fearing, or rebelling against the differences they perhaps do not readily understand.

Someone from UK asked me when Bali would re-open to tourism. Although local government is keen to have tourists back soon, and the national government has made Bali a priority for vaccines, a third world country with a huge population to protect, will struggle to do it this year.

Russian virologists say that the Delta variant, first found in India, is now the most prevalent version in Moscow. The mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, told local media on Friday that 89.3 percent of all new coronavirus cases in the city involve the Delta variant.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said on Saturday that the city administration is canceling all public viewing events in the Japanese capital to prevent the risk of a surge in coronavirus infections. "These are necessary measures to make the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics a success,'' she told reporters after meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

There had been six planned viewing sites across the Japanese capital, including Inokashira and Yoyogi parks as well as a university in Tokyo. Koike said the sites will now instead be offered as COVID vaccination centers.

SYDNEY - Researchers in Australia are starting clinical trials of a new type of COVID-19 vaccine — a nasal spray. Scientists at Brisbane's Nucleus Network believe that the treatment could be more effective against the virus than the AstraZeneca and Pfizer drugs and that it would allow patients who are afraid of needles to be inoculated.

The Palestinian Authority has cancelled a deal under which Israel was to give it at least one million Covid vaccines.

The authority said the Pfizer jabs were too close to their expiry date.

Earlier, Israel said it didn't need an ageing stock of vaccines and they were to be used to speed up the Palestinian vaccination programme.

In return, the Palestinians were to give Israel a similar number of vaccines they are expecting from the Pfizer organisation later in the year.

Palestinian Authority Health Minister Mai Alkaila said they had been told the jabs would expire in July or August, but, when they arrived, the marked date was June.

WASHINGTON, June 19 (Reuters) - The United States shipped 2.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Taiwan on Saturday, more than tripling Washington's previous allocation of shots for the island, which has faced increasing political and military pressure from China.

Anyone who has had the AstraZeneca vaccine will be barred from attending Bruce Springsteen’s comeback shows in New York next week.

The intimate five-night run at the St James theatre will be the first Broadway show to reopen since last March and will require attendees to show proof of vaccination, reports The Telegraph.

However, the list will be limited only to jabs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration - Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson.

Any potential concert-goers who received their Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine overseas will be left with the prospect of being turned away at the door should they book tickets.

“At the direction of New York State, Springsteen on Broadway and the St James Theatre will only be accepting proof of FDA-approved Covid-19 vaccines,” the official website says.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley, in a challenge to the National Football League's new Covid-19 training camp and preseason protocols, tweeted that he'd rather retire than get a vaccine.

"Everyone — Hi, I'm Cole Beasley and I'm not vaccinated!," he wrote in a post Friday that he called a "Public Service Announcement."

"I will be outside doing what I do," Beasley added. "I'll be out in the public. If your scared of me then steer clear, or get vaccinated. Point. Blank. Period. I may die of covid, but I'd rather die actually living."
