Doesn’t look so glowing for the Mexicans. Nearly a quarter a million people dead and that’s underestimated.

For 94% of those who died from Covid, staying at home wasn’t an option

Mexicans who had no option but to keep going out to work during the coronavirus pandemic died in much greater numbers than people who were able to work from home, a new study has found.

Conducted by public health researchers at the National Autonomous University (UNAM), the study found that 94% of the more than 200,000 people who lost their lives to Covid-19 in Mexico were manual and operational workers, housewives, retirees and pensioners.

Only 6% were professionals, executives and art and performance workers, the study said.

Among the large numbers of manual and operational workers who died after contracting Covid-19 were drivers, street vendors, medical personnel, agricultural workers and factory employees. People in such jobs — with the exception of healthcare — generally have lower levels of education than citizens who are able to work from home.

“There is no doubt that Covid-19 has greatly affected the population with lower levels of education; practically half the deaths occurred among people whose highest level of education was primary school,” said the UNAM study, written by Alejandro Cortés-Meda and Guadalupe Ponciano-Rodríguez.

The study said that people who continued to work at factories, farms and essential businesses and on public transit had a greater possibility of exposure to the coronavirus due to factors such as close contact with the public and other workers.

It also noted that it was impossible for such workers to work from home. Many are not entitled to sick leave and have poor access to healthcare, the study added. Those same workers often work long shifts in order to cover their expenses and are at high risk of spreading the coronavirus to members of their family.

The study also found that 92% of Covid-19 deaths occurred in public healthcare facilities during the first year of the pandemic. More than half — 52% — occurred in Mexican Social Security Institute hospitals, 32% occurred in facilities operated by the federal Health Ministry and 8% occurred in hospitals run by the State Workers Social Security Institute.

Only 2% of deaths occurred at private hospitals, the report said. Many other people whose deaths were attributed to Covid-19 died at home, often without ever being tested for the infectious disease.

As of Sunday, Mexico had officially recorded 221,647 Covid-19 fatalities, but the government has acknowledged that the real death toll is much higher. An analysis published earlier this month by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington School of Medicine showed that more than 617,000 people had died from Covid-19 in Mexico.

For 94% of those who died from Covid, staying at home wasn't an option

Unfortunately, yes, misskit. If you are poor and sick, the China flu could get you.

Especially if you'e old, sick and obese. Throw 3rd world poverty into the mix and it's time to call your maker and arrange your best clothes.

However, as per my post above, less than 3,000 people were diagnosed with Covid in Mexico yesterday - over 99% of whom will be A-OK - from a population of over 127 million.

It seems they're doing pretty ok and they have far more pressing concerns than a cold and sniffle.

My lies??? What on earth are you talking about? Your 2,725 number was new cases for just yesterday.

    Totals in Mexico
    Total cases
    2.41M

    Recovered
    1.92M

    Deaths
    223K

And Mexico does have lockdowns, they use a stoplight system.

Almost 10% of those catching the virus has died, that is not "next to no deaths".
That figure is 5-10 times higher than it should be.

    What a load of bullshit!

Those are the recorded figures of tests and do not include the more than 70% who have either been asymptomatic or have recovered at home with little more than a sniffle and no need for a test because MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN GET A COLD.

That is not unique for Mexico, that is something Mexico has in common with most other countries.
1-2%, not 10% seems to be the norm.

New cases yesterday 2725, new deaths yesterday 387..
The daily deaths was at lowest in beginning of April (204) and has almost doubled since.

Number of cases is less relevant than number of deaths because it wholly depends on number of tests.
Number of deaths per population is the figure which shows how well a country copes with the pandemic.

    Saving lives, not playing politics

    By Zhang Zhouxiang | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2021-05-28 14:49

"On Wednesday, the number of deaths in Taiwan due to the new wave of COVID-19 pandemic reached 11 on one single day. Yet on the same day, Brent Christensen, the head of American Institute in Taiwan, said "infection numbers remained quite low" and that they were still in talks on vaccines. The total number of deaths reached 47 on Friday, while that of new infections exceeded 667. Is that number high enough for Christensen?

The recent wave has revealed the true face of some sides, with US politicians topping the list. US politicians are interested in only selling weapons to Taiwan to prevent China's reunification, and when the Taiwan people need vaccines, US politicians go quiet.

The US House of Representatives introduced the "Ensuring American Global Leadership and Engagement" Act, the so-called EAGLE Act, on Tuesday, which mentioned "supporting Taiwan". Their "support" is made of 100 percent missile and machine guns, and zero percent vaccines. They want their "support" to cause trouble, not save lives.

The local ruling Democratic Progressive Party politicians are no better. Tsai Ing-wen, the local leader, claimed via her Facebook account that they could not finish signing vaccine contracts with Germany-based BNT because of the Chinese mainland, a statement which received fierce criticism in the comment section.

The fact is that mainland enterprises have signed an exclusive contract with BNT, so the only way for Taiwan to legally purchase vaccines from the latter is via the mainland. Yet Tsai, for political reasons, wants to avoid having contact with the mainland.

Is there anything more absurd than this? Tsai is only concerned about her political interests, not the lives of Taiwan people.

The mainland people most care about the health and lives of compatriots on the Taiwan island. Even though the DPP opposes it, the Chinese mainland has expressed willingness to assist Taiwan with vaccines to help protect the compatriots there. On Wednesday, Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said: "Vaccines made on the Chinese mainland are certified by the WHO. Do you want them or not?"

Hope the DPP reverses its course soon. After all, people on the other side of the Taiwan Straits are our compatriots."

Something on the order of 70% of those coming out of moderate to serious COVID-19 are showing persisting symptoms. That is a huge number.

The most commonly occurring symptoms were shortness of breath, fatigue, exhaustion and sleep problems. “The numbers are very shocking, especially for fatigue and shortness of breath,” Nasserie said. “These were pretty debilitating symptoms, with some people reporting difficulty walking up a flight of stairs.” About 40% of patients said they experienced fatigue, 36% said they experienced shortness of breath and 29% said they experienced sleep disorders. Depression and anxiety, along with general pain and discomfort, were also relatively common: About 20% of patients described these symptoms. An inability to concentrate, commonly referred to as “brain fog,” was mentioned by about 25% of patients.

I'd suggest that symptoms such as shortness of breath, sleep disorders and 'brain fog' would be fairly common, if not almost inevitable, after any illness preceded and followed by a lengthy period of physical inactivity.

Especially if the patient is in the age group most susceptible to the COVID virus.

621 million shots administered in China as usage of 3-dose vaccine expanded

Amid recent sporadic outbreaks, China continues to expand and accelerate nationwide inoculation with the launch of the country's first three-dose COVID-19 vaccine, which experts said would provide extra protection than the one-dose and two-dose candidates. The three-shot vaccine is already being administered in at least 13 provincial-level regions in China.

The three-dose COVID-19 vaccine was jointly developed by the Institute of Microbiology of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biopharmaceutical. It is China's first, as well as the world's first recombinant subunit protein vaccine and it has already been approved by Chinese national authority, according to the website of the CAS microbiology institute.
