Since President Joe Biden announced this month that 80 million shots would be shipped abroad by the end of June, the White House has yet to send out any of the doses because of a variety of hurdles from logistical to regulatory. In the meantime, infections are surging in countries from Haiti to Japan, which struggle with organizational challenges and have only a small fraction of the doses they need.

With demand for the shots waning and half of adults fully vaccinated, the U.S. has the excess supply to use for vaccine diplomacy. About 70 million doses of the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines have yet to be administered, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But determining where those doses should go and getting them where they need to be is a herculean task, said a person familiar with the process.

Apparently the 80M doses are the largest stockpile on offer from any source, including China and Russia.

There is far more vaccine hesitancy than I would have imagined. It seems the States will have a hard time getting much past the 50% mark due to this factor.

As far as the much heralded "herd immunity", forget it. I think it may not happen anywhere ever.

A large number of tribal people's worldwide seem very suspicious of the jab. This is a worthy study in itself, it would make someone a damn good Ph.D. thesis. Any TD members have any special insights into this?

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s prime minister announced on Friday a near-total coronavirus lockdown in the country, with social and economic activities to be halted for two weeks to contain a worsening outbreak.


Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the decision to implement the lockdown starting June 1 came after new infections breached 8,000 on Friday for the first time, sparking fears the disease could spiral out of control.


The government earlier this month imposed a partial lockdown until June 7, stopping short of shutting down businesses to prevent a possible economic catastrophe. But new infections have climbed since the recent Muslim Eid festival, crossing 6,000 on May 19 for the first time and soaring to 8,290 on Friday.


This raised the country’s total cases to 549,514. The health ministry also reported another 61 deaths Friday, pushing the tally to 2,552 — nearly 40% recorded this month alone. Malaysia’s total cases and deaths have jumped nearly five-fold compared to all of last year.


Muhyiddin said in a statement that all business activities will be shut down June 1-14 in the first phase of the full lockdown, except for essential services.


If daily cases fall, some economic sectors will be allowed to reopen in the second phase, which is expected to last four weeks, he said. After that, the country will return to current controls, with all businesses allowed to operate but not social activities.


Muhyiddin vowed that the government will bolster the healthcare system to ensure it doesn’t collapse and ramp up vaccinations.


This is the country’s second nationwide lockdown in over a year. A lockdown last year badly hit the economy, and the government resisted growing calls for another large-scale lockdown but caved in after the runaway increase in new cases.


Earlier Friday, Senior Minister Ismail Sabri said many ethnic Malay Muslims violated COVID-19 safety rules that banned them from visiting each other during the Eid festival.


He said 24 Eid clusters have been detected with 850 confirmed cases. Many of the positive cases involved people who were asymptomatic, he said.

Daily COVID-19 cases soar to new high of 4,803 today as CCSA concerned over rising infections in prisons

The COVID-19 spread in Thailand’s prisons remain a matter of concern, as 2,702 new infections among inmates were found, out of 4,803 new cases logged in Thailand today (Saturday), said CCSA Spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin today.


He said that 1,919 cases were found in Nonthaburi prison and 481 in Bangkok’s Bang Kwang maximum security prison, adding that the provincial administration is preparing a facility to accommodate the severe cases and is trying hard to contain the spread.


Total infections among inmates have increased to 22,398 across the country so far.


The CCSA also reported new clusters at a shoe factory in Khao Yoi district of Phetchaburi, where 32 cases were logged, in the Bang Sai community of Thai, Cambodian and Myanmar workers in Muang district of Chon Buri province, where 32 new infections were reported and 36 infections at a medical glove factory in Kantang district of Trang province.


34 more deaths were reported today. 21 were in Bangkok, 2each in Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Chiang Rai and 1 each in Phetchaburi, Phetchabun, Nonthaburi, Ayutthaya, Ratchaburi, Songkhla and Saraburi. The fatalities were 18 men and 16 women, aged between 35 and 87.


Cumulative infections, since April 1st, 2021 have risen to 120, 916, including 46,480 still being treated in hospitals.


3.5 million doses of vaccine have been administered. 2,415,903 people have been vaccinated, including 1,088,222 who have received the second jab.


Bangkok recorded 1,054 new cases today, raising total infections in the capital to 39,463, since April 1st. Other provinces with high infections are Nonthaburi, 6,576, Samut Prakan, 6,397, Chon Buri, 4,515, Phetchaburi, 4,437, Chiang Mai, 4,067, Pathum Thani, 3,383, Samut Sakhon, 2,441, Surat Thani, 1,666 and Prachuap Khiri Khan, 1,685.


28 provinces did not report a single new infection today and 30 provinces recorded 10 or fewer.

Vast Majority of People in Philippines Rejecting China’s Sinovac Vaccine


Health officials report the Philippine effort to achieve herd immunity over Covid-19 is facing two emerging problems: Most Filipinos don’t want to get inoculated, and of those who do, reject China’s Sinovac vaccine.


On May 17, a vaccination centre in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, was swamped by members of the public when word got around it was administering jabs od the US made Pfizer.


The Manila Times reports long lines of people disregarding social distancing forming at the centre, with even people who did not have an appointment showing up to get the Pfizer vaccine.


In comparison, vaccination centres offering shots made by the China’s Sinovac have reported few takers. Filipino’s aren’t showing up for vaccination appointments, resulting in a surplus of Sinovac vaccines at the end of each day.


Dr Anthony Leachon, a former senior adviser to the country’s Covid-19 task force, said: “I think it’s the track record of Pfizer for producing quality medicines proven for efficacy and safety. Their product is a result of excellent research and development.”


According to the Manila Times, the Philippines has 5.5 million Sinovac jabs, 2.5 million AstraZeneca doses, and 193,000 Pfizer shots.

Health officials estimate the Philippines need to vaccinate at least 70 million of its 110 million population to achieve herd immunity. However, the target has since been revised down to 58 million.


The Philippines vaccination programme started on March 1 and as of May 24 only 986,929 Filipinos had been immunised.


Reacting to the rejection of China’s Sinovac vaccine, President Rodrigo Duterte said on May 18 that people could no longer be given a choice of vaccines. “Whether you are a millionaire or a pauper, you get what is given to you. You can’t choose,” he said on television.


Under the current set up, local governments administer vaccines according to a hierarchy that prioritises health workers, people with health issues, the elderly, indigents and uniformed personnel.

Those eligible can sign up and book appointments either using an app or by filling out a paper form. Before Duterte’s intervention, applicants could pick the vaccines they wanted by skipping days when the brand they wanted was not available.


Now people will not be told what brand of vaccine is being used until they are at the centre, at which point they could still refuse but would need to re-book.


Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said on Tuesday that while health workers would be allowed to choose what vaccine they received, senior citizens and those with health issues would have to go “back to the end of the line – that’s only fair”.

S.China’s Guangzhou issues stay-at-home order for parts of the city amid fresh surge of COVID-19 cases


South China's Guangzhou on Saturday issued a stay-at-home order for residents in several streets. The residents have been asked to stop all activities that are not necessary for daily life. This comes after a surge in fresh COVID-19 infections in the city.


According to a statement published by Guangzhou government in South China's Guangdong Province, residents in fives streets in Liwan district have been asked to stay at home, and only one person of each household is allowed to buy life necessities every day.


In Liwan district, all entertainment venues, indoor sports venues, wholesale markets and childcare institutions were asked to close. Restaurants are only allowed for take-away orders and schools, except for junior high and senior high, must suspend their offline courses.


At Saturday's press conference Shen Ying, deputy head of Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Bureau, said that seven subway stations and 177 bus stations of 83 bus routes in areas under restrictive measures only allowed passengers to get off.


For citywide restrictions, big celebrations and gatherings are not allowed. Nursing homes, child welfare institutions and service institutions for newborns and religious venues are subjected to closed management. Indoor public venues such as entertainment venues are open at 75 percent capacity, according to the Guangzhou city government.


Four streets in Liwan district were categorized as medium risk zones on Saturday.


The city reported one new confirmed COVID-19 case and five new asymptomatic cases on Saturday. Guangzhou has reported five confirmed cases and 15 silent infections since the first case was reported on May 21.


The majority of these cases were related to the first confirmed case, as they either lived together or had dinner with the case in indoor venues, according to Guangzhou health authority. The first case, a 75-year-old man was infected with the variant first seen in India.


The spread of the virus in fresh COVID-19 infection in Guangzhou was both fast and strong, local health authority said.


Guangzhou's fresh COVID-19 infections have spread to a neighbor city. Nanshan district of Foshan, Guangdong Province, reported one new confirmed case and two asymptomatic cases on Saturday, after nucleic acid testing of three people from Guangzhou came back positive. The three were quarantined and treated in a local hospital, and their living places have also been disinfected. Nanshan district is expanding nucleic acid testing to more residents.


After a surge in COVID-19 infections this week, Yantian district of Shenzhen on Saturday started a district-wide nucleic acid testing. Earlier this week several communities in Futian district in Shenzhen launched nucleic acid testing for all the locals.


Shenzhen reported one new asymptomatic carrier on Saturday, bringing the total number of silent carriers to 10 since the city reported the first locally transmitted asymptomatic case on May 21.


The recent infections in Shenzhen were related to the city's Yantian Port, and most silent carriers worked for an international cargo ship.
