I was going to say: I'd heard a rumour..., but that would upset PH again

In France, the Académie Nationale de Médecine are advising people not to speak when using Public Transport, including chatting on the mobiles, to reduce chances of infecting others.

In Germany, the advice is not to use public transport at all if possible, but if you must, I heard similar advice being spread in Munich when waiting for the U and S bahns.

I get the impression that governments believe the covid virus is much worse than they are letting on and are just trying to control as best they can without losing control.

It just sounds too much like a chio/Skidmark-esque invention . . . not that you're anything like them, of course.

Possibly so . . . at the end of the day how draconian can you make laws to get people to do what you want them to do before being like China.

^same here in PI. The tourist spots like Boracay, Bohol, Palawan, etc are mostly devoid of tourists. The govt is encouraging local tourism but people are not travelling due to the restrictions (covid test, travel pass, municipal pass, etc). Many ppl lost their jobs too, either locally or as OFWs, so no $$$ for travel. Some areas or islands require quarantine when you arrive.

Topper mentioned in his Bacolod thread that if he was to travel to Iloilo city (on another island), he would face at least 28 days quarantine (14 in Iloilo, 14 upon return to Bacolod).

There's talk that PI won't be opening to foreign tourists this year.

Btw, my hometown has been implementing a QR code tracing app since around September last year. No QR code, no mask, no face shield = no entry to malls, supermarkets, banks, etc.

JAPAN: At least 15,000 virus patients waiting for hospitals, accommodations

At least 15,058 people were on the waiting list for a hospital or a designated accommodation after testing positive for the novel coronavirus earlier this month in the 11 prefectures covered by a state of emergency, a Kyodo News survey found Sunday, as public health centers have been swamped with surging numbers of new cases.

The number as of last Tuesday marks a sharp increase from a month earlier, including in Tokyo where it almost quintupled. In Japan, local public health centers are in charge of arranging for hospitalization of people infected with the virus, or appointment with an accommodation facility for people with mild symptoms.

But as the number of newly infected people has been rising sharply since last November, the arrangement has been taking longer and a growing number of infected people have been forced to wait at home amid bed shortages, and some have died there.

First phase of Thailand’s Covid-19 vaccinations to start on February 14

The government plans to begin Thailand’s 3-phase vaccination plan on February 14, starting with healthcare and frontline workers as well as vulnerable groups.

At the Covid-19 vaccination administration subcommittee meeting today, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the first phase of inoculations starting next month will target 19,014,154 Thai people in 4 priority groups…

1,700,000 health workers in both public and private health care sectors.

    6,163,095 populations with underlying conditions.

11,136,059 people aged over 60 years

Covid-19 task force who are in close contact with infected patients.

The vaccine availability remains limited and only target groups who are at high risk of infection will be vaccinated during the first phase of the vaccination plan, according to permanent secretary of public health Kiattiphum Wongrajit.

The vaccines will be free and are not compulsory, Anutin says.

The AstraZeneca vaccine, developed in partnership with Oxford University, was approved by the Thai government for emergency last week. The first batch of 50,000 doses are expected to arrive next month. Thailand also expects 200,000 doses of China’s Sinovac Biotech vaccine to arrive next month. The Chinese vaccine is expected to be approved by Thai drug regulators within the next 3 weeks.

The second phase of the 3-part plan is scheduled to run from May to December, offering vaccinations in all regions. Thai officials aim to have at least 50% of the Thai population vaccinated by the end of the year. The final phase will be rolled out in January 2022, with the goal to have enough vaccines to distribute to create herd immunity.

The government is also launched a Line Official Account called “Mor Prom”, translated as “doctor’s ready” to facilitate the vaccination administration. People can register to make appointments for vaccination, while health authorities can monitor the adverse effects of the vaccines. The platform is expected to launch on February 12 to serve the health workers before opening to the public in April.

Did they ever resolve the Astrazeneca issue with efficacy?

They claimed 90% and it then transpired that was in a group that inadvertently only received a half dose the first time round. They were going to test this further, but I haven't seen any results, although it does take time to analyze the data.

I would be inclined to hold off on the two-full-dose vaccination of that one until this is confirmed.

Mind you I have 5G in my DNA so what do I know?

I have to say i am relieved the UK did not buy into the EU vaccine programme, with delays in approval, roll out and now with further issues over supplies its quite frankly a mess. The latest is legal threats to Astrazenica as they are only going to be able to ship 31 million out of the 80 million doses contracted within the agree time frame. I am hoping to get jabbed before march is out..we will see.

Lot of people pissed off here in Canada about the delay, although no legal action yet.

The premier of Ontario said he would be up Pfizer's ying yang like a seven hundred pound gorilla with a firecracker. Our kindly though simple minded prime minister probably won' be going that route.

Pfizer has also chosen this time to lobby the government for tax exemptions. Bastards.

^ i have to say that whilst we in the west are bemoaning the vaccine programmes its quite easy to forget that the development and approval has been conducted in unprecedented timescales, and that we at least have forecasts for delivery across our populations. Those in poorer countries are as usual at the back of the queue and this could have the potential to haunt us with not only higher numbers of deaths globally but it leaves vast populations unprotected as incubators for further viral mutation.

I had a discussion about that at work today with my German colleagues. It is one of two excellent outcomes of Brexit in my view and shows the worst of EU bureaucracy.

True colours have begun to emerge with member states looking to secure supplies outside the agreement. I do recall reading posters suggesting the UK was mad to not buy into the EU programme. In all though when push comes to shove i don't care what gets said my whom on unity et al, it always ends as every man for themselves and money and power talk, as such i don't imagine Gemany being anywhere but in the top 2 in the EU in the vaccination stakes.

I think Pfizer are to be applauded for taking the brave decision of interrupting production now - for a couple of weeks - to boost production by 54% over the year. Those 700 MILLION extra doses will come in very handy.

Remember the EU turned down hundreds of millions of Pfizer vaccines because they wanted to flog the French shit instead.

So fuck them, they have absolutely no right to whinge. They're just trying to blame these justifiable interruptions for their own fucking ineptitude.

Same in NZ - the first case of covid in the population happened yesterday, probably caught in managed isolation. Australia closed the travel bubble with NZ.

It would't have made any difference in this instance (other initiatives would have) but imagine having a population devoid of covid - vaccinating them and having a relatively secure environment. Nope . . . politicians who need to be seen fighting the good fight for glory - the story of Jacinda Ardern.

This is a piece that makes some interesting points, some are a bit technical and not easy for the popular press to push out. Not everything here fits in the current narrative of vaccination as the final solution. Rather, there needs to be a multi-pronged approach. Here is just one paragraph from a longish read:

The area of intense disagreement is community management combining prevention by vaccine and reduction of hospital admission, using pre-hospital treatment. There is a global expectation that vaccines will dramatically change the current face of COVID-19 while there is broad-based denial that any of the available (unpatented) drugs beneficially alter the natural history of infection. Expectation of a vaccine nirvana alongside therapeutic nihilism are both incorrect, although each is promoted with a vigour rooted in socio-political conviction (and supported by the Pharma industry).
