Quite right; Healthline should not have said that bat soup consumption didn’t cause the COVID-19 pandemic; they should have said that bat soup consumption almost certainly didn’t cause the COVID-19 pandemic. It could, in fact, have been caused by eating bat soup. Or it could have been caused by pixies. Or by wearing masks. Or by 5G. But I think it was pixies.

TBH, I didn't want to c&p the articles (French). The primary source appears to have been an Ipsos Global Advisor poll conducted just before Christmas.

I had pre Christmas drinks with one French couple and celebrated New Year with a French family. It came up in conversation on both occasions.

It takes about eight years of college study.

The rogue pharmacist is probably not unintelligent; he's just gone a bit nuts (unlike Trump, who is both dumb and nuts). Pandemic panic, along with the effects of isolation in lockdown, are bound to take their toll on people with pre-existing mental health issues. I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of this sort of thing.

China records several coronavirus cases near Beijing; imposes new restrictions

China's Hebei province near Beijing recorded several new cases as authorities moved to impose travel restrictions and banned gatherings.

Hebei recorded at least 20 locally transmitted virus cases with 64 new asymptomatic cases. Local authorities moved to clampdown on movement with residents ordered to present negative nucleic acid COVID-19 test at least 72 hours before boarding a plane or bus.

City officials also began a massive COVID-19 testing campaign with reports indicating the last time local transmission took place in Hebei was in June last year.

Reports said residents had visited village events in Xiaoguozhuang, Shijiazhuang as state-run Xinhua news agency reported the provincial capital had moved to suspend train service in order to combat the fast-spreading virus.

Reports said local authorities had also locked down some villages and banned gatherings in order to prevent further spread of the virus.

Authorities had identified Gaocheng district in Shijiazhuang as a "high risk" zone, reports said.

There were also cases reported in Dalian, Liaoning province as residents were barred from leaving the city.

Beijing had begun mass vaccinations in the New Year with thousands lining up to get their jabs. China's state media reported that at least 73,000 people in the country's capital have received the vaccine.

Health authorities had given their approval to pharma giant Sinopharm, with the company asserting that it had 79 per cent efficacy rate to fight the virus.

The country plans to vaccinate millions of citizens this winter in the run-up to Lunar New Year in mid-February.

Governors told to prepare provincial field hospitals for worst case scenario

Thailand’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has instructed all provincial administrations to prepare for the setting up of field hospitals in the worst case scenario, where hospitals become overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients, said CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin today.

Citing China’s ability to build a huge field hospital in Wuhan in just a week, last year, he said he does not want to see sick patients being left on the roadside in Thailand, because hospitals could not accept any more.

Dr. Taweesin cited the case of Samut Sakhon province, which took the lead in erecting two field hospitals, while those in another province protested against a field hospital to accommodate infected Myanmar migrant workers from Samut Sakhon.

He said that, despite the protest, there is the good example of the mayor of a sub-district administration in Samut Sakhon who agreed to allow his farm to be used as a field hospital.

Dr. Taweesin said he plans to visit the northeastern provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Muk Dahan, Amnat Charoen, Yasothon and Si Sa Ket to inspect potential locations for field hospitals.

Ratchaburi Provincial Governor Ronnapob Luangpairote announced today that the province will not allow a field hospital to be set up to accommodate infected Myanmar migrant workers from Samut Sakhon.

A small group of people in Muang district, led by an MP for the province, protested a few days ago against the planned hospital, to be set up inside the Burachat barracks.

Colonel Chainarong Supaphan, commander of the Engineering Battalion, also opened the barracks to the protesters and the media to assure that no such facility is built in the camp.

There are 20 infections in Ratchaburi, including 11 still in hospitals and nine who have recovered.

Thailand still having problems with basic Human Rights...

The latest outbreak could get significantly worse if they fail to look after the migrant population.

My mum received her second Pfizer jab this morning.

It seems that all doctor's surgeries in the UK were told not to give the second jabs to allow giving more people the first, but that this could be discretionary. My mum's surgery decided it was unethical to cancel the second appointments and went ahead.

Whatever the thoughts on this, I'm sure glad my mum has had two jabs and should now be pretty safe.

As an aside, only selected doctor's surgeries have been administering the Pfizer jabs, mainly because of logistical issues with keeping it so cold. There is a big veterinary college just near my mum's surgery and they had the facilities to store the vaccine at -71 degrees, or whatever it is. Just a lucky coincidence..

Fucking chinkies and their Wuhan virus. STILL trying to cover it up.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) is pressuring Beijing to allow an international team to investigate the origins of coronavirus in China after he said they are being blocked from entering the country.

“Today we learned that Chinese officials have not yet finalized the necessary permissions for the team’s arrival in China,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a news briefing on Tuesday. “I am very disappointed with this news, given that two members had already begun their journeys and others were not able to travel at the last minute.”

My Dad got his first this morning. It was his local nurse but at the fire station rather than the surgery. He was told the second jab has been postponed and he'll be told later when, roughly 3-4 weeks time. He was disappointed they didn't offer a cup of tea afterwards...

My mum was chatting to the surgery nurse and was told that by the time they were told to cancel the second injections, there simply wasn't enough time.

They had 1000 booked for the second injection today, but were told to cancel on Sunday night. Assuming 1 minute a phone call to cancel, 1000 minutes is 16 hours. Then to re-book 1000 new patients... simply not enough time for a normal surgery without multiple phone lines and staff.

As Hal says, these Etonian twats running the UK are an embarressment. Their dithering and constant backtracking makes it impossible for the people on the front line to plan anything.

State of emergency declared in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Thursday declared a second, albeit less comprehensive, state of emergency in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba prefectures to contain the fast-spreading coronavirus, which has stretched parts of the nation’s health care system to breaking point.

“I’m highly alarmed by the severe situation nationwide recently … as the number of patients has been extremely high,” Suga said at a government task force meeting, adding the Go To Travel domestic tourism program will be suspended while the state of emergency is in effect.

The restrictions will enter into force Friday and remain in place until at least Feb. 7. They will not be lifted until the affected prefectures see a significant reduction in benchmarks such as hospital occupancy rates and positivity rates.

One threshold would be daily cases declining to 500 per day in Tokyo, said Yasutoshi Nishimura, the minister handling the government’s coronavirus response.

The prime minister was forced to play his last trump card — a situation his administration had desperately tried to avoid to ensure a swift economic recovery — after seeing new COVID-19 cases stubbornly refuse to go down and hospital beds rapidly fill up to as much as 88% in the capital. Tokyo logged 2,447 cases Thursday, shattering the daily record.

Under the second declaration, the relevant prefectural governors will ask people to stay at home after 8 p.m., while restaurants, pubs and cafes that serve alcoholic beverages are requested to serve them only from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and close by 8 p.m. The central government has squarely targeted eating and drinking venues, as it considers these establishments to be hotbeds of community transmission.

Haven't really been following this one.

A one-shot Covid jab that has the potential to significantly boost Britain's sluggish vaccination scheme may be approved in the UK by next month, it was claimed today.

Scientists and Government sources believe the vaccine, made by the Belgian arm of pharmaceutical giant Johnson and Johnson, could be given emergency authorisation within weeks.

The jab uses similar technology to the Oxford University vaccine, making it just as easy to transport and store, but requires just a single injection to protect against
    Covid.

However, it won't be clear how effective the vaccine is until its trial results are made public and submitted to the UK's medical regulator, which is expected to happen by early February.

Sir John Bell, regius professor at Oxford University and an adviser to the UK's Vaccine Taskforce, told The Telegraph he believes the vaccine will 'work well' and become available in time for the mid-February target.

Britain has already struck a deal for 30million doses of the vaccine, with the option of ordering 22million more. It is hoped supplies could arrive in time to help the Government fulfill its ambitious promise of vaccinating 13million Brits by mid-February.

If approved, it would be the third vaccine in the UK's arsenal, after the Pfizer and Oxford jabs.
