Philippines to ban U.S. travellers from Sunday

MANILA, Jan 1 (Reuters) – The Philippines will prohibit the entry of foreign travellers from the United States from Sunday after the more infectious new variant of the coronavirus was detected in Florida.

The travel ban, lasting until Jan. 15, covers those who have been to the United States within 14 days preceding arrival in the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesman said in a statement.

The measure expands the travel restriction that Manila announced on Tuesday, which initially covered passengers from 19 countries and territories and took effect from midnight of Dec. 29.

U.S. state health officials have detected the new variant of COVID-19, which has swept through the United Kingdom, in Florida, marking the third known U.S. state to identify such a case.’

Spokesman Harry Roque said the Office of the President decided to include the United States in the regulation on the recommendation of the health and foreign affairs departments.

Passengers from the United States who will arrive before Jan. 3 will be allowed to enter the Philippines, but they must to undergo a 14-day quarantine even if they had initially tested negative.

The restriction does not cover Filipinos travelling from the United States but they are also required to undergo a 14-day quarantine in a government facility when they arrive.

The new variant has not been detected in the Philippines.

With more than 475,000 confirmed infections and 9,248 deaths, the Philippines has the second highest number of COVID-19 cases and casualties in Southeast Asia after Indonesia.

Vietnam reports first case of new coronavirus variant

    Updated: 2021-01-02 17:21

"HANOI - Vietnam has detected its first imported case of the new coronavirus variant that is spreading rapidly around Britain, the health ministry said on Saturday.
The variant was detected in a 44-year-old woman returning to Vietnam from Britain, who was quarantined upon arrival and was confirmed positive for the virus on Dec 24, the ministry said in a statement.

"Researchers ran gene-sequencing on the patient's sample and found the strain is a variant known as "VOC 202012/01"", it said.

The variant includes a genetic mutation that, in theory, could result in the virus spreading more easily between people.
Countries around the world have cut off travel links to Britain to stop the spread of the new variant, which scientists have said is 40-70% more transmissible than the original virus.

Vietnam is still operating repatriation flights to bring its citizens stuck in the UK home amid the pandemic.
Vietnam has recorded 1,474 infections, with 35 deaths."

^ New Zealand has five or six in managed isolation/quarantine - all fro the US and the UK.

Finally the appeasement arse-licking Ardern government are going to require pre-travel covid tests - but it only starts in two weeks - and already there are the usual suspects whining about how this is a cure for the rich as the poor can't afford it, the zoom interview with some bint who has lived in the UK for twenty years and now wants to come home but 'can't afford the tests . . . madness

I don't get it - as soon as I heard the borders will be closed and flights cut I hightailed it home. Now there are Kiwis who have loved overseas for decades deciding this would be a good time and PRs from India thinking it's beneficial to use their PR status, which never expires.

This is after they said one month ago, that pre-travel tests would not work. FFS . This mob is not too bright.

Australia's COVID-19 Cases on the Rise as Masks Made Compulsory

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia's most-populous state of New South Wales (NSW) reported eight new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, while neighbouring Victoria's tally increased by three, as new measures to combat the disease kicked in.

The NSW outbreak started around mid-December in Sydney's Northern Beaches area, where a quarter of a million people are in strict lockdown until Jan. 9. Cases associated with the cluster now total 148.

A smaller cluster in the west of the city, linked to a different genome sequence, has 13 confirmed cases. But the state's chief health officer, Kerry Chant, said authorities are worried as recent transmission at a liquor store occurred with "fleeting" exposure.

"We know these transmission events have happened through very minimal exposure. We are asking members of the community who did purchase alcohol or enter that premises for that period to be very vigilant," Chant told reporters.

NSW has made wearing masks mandatory at indoor venues like gaming rooms, hair salons and shops as authorities try to limit the spread of the disease. They will be legally enforced from midnight local time.

Australia has avoided the worst of the pandemic following swift action by authorities to shut borders, enforce lockdowns, and to carry out widespread testing and social distancing.

Since the pandemic began, it has reported more than 28,450 COVID-19 cases and 909 deaths. (Graphic: The latest global coronavirus statistics, charts and maps)

Despite the outbreak in Sydney, a scheduled 5-day cricket match between Australia and India, starting on Thursday, will go ahead, although with a reduced number of spectators. Five Indian players have been placed in isolation while the Australian and Indian cricket boards investigate allegations of a breach of biosecurity protocols.

In Victoria, where all cases are linked to the same Melbourne restaurant, officials are investigating how the disease spread from the source in NSW, authorities said.

Victoria has more than 30 active cases and has made masks mandatory across the state, restricted the number of people who can meet socially and shut its border with NSW.

Health authorities have identified 220 "close contacts" and more than 50 "exposure sites" linked to positive cases.

But, "what is important is that they are in quarantine when they are diagnosed so that the risk of onward transmission is reduced," Victoria's Deputy Chief Health Officer Allen Cheng said in Melbourne.

No good news here for the USA

Jaw-Dropping New CDC Figures Suggest True U.S. Coronavirus Death Toll Approaching Half a Million

As the United States goes into the New Year breaking single-day records for coronavirus deaths, data from the Centers for Disease Control suggests the true cumulative U.S. death toll is approaching half a million.

Last week saw two new record daily totals of confirmed Covid deaths of over 3,700, and as of Friday, the official U.S. death toll was 347,870. That’s according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, which is generally regarded as the official source for confirmed coronavirus figures.

But according to the latest available figures from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the true current death toll is likely much greater — and could surpass half a million in a matter of weeks.

CDC tracks the number of deaths reported in excess of the average number of expected deaths based on prior years, and the latest figures show that since the pandemic began, 431,792 more people than expected have died.

But those figures only measure excess deaths through the week ending December 19, when the official confirmed death toll was at 316,000. Since then, another 31,000 lost souls have been added to the official count. Excess deaths during the pandemic have hovered around twenty percent, meaning that in the past two weeks, it’s likely that an additional 6,000 deaths have been undercounted — meaning the current number of excess deaths is likely around 470,000.

The news comes as vaccinations lag far behind what is necessary to end the pandemic — and portends months more of escalating national tragedy. The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projects an additional 200,000 U.S. coronavirus deaths by April.

    From this morning's The Times:

EU’s coronavirus vaccination strategy in chaos as supplies run short

The European Union’s vaccine strategy has been criticised as “clearly inadequate” after a first week of inoculation on the continent was marred by logistical mishaps.

President Macron reprimanded his ministers over France’s sluggish start after only 400 people received the Pfizer-Biontech jab in the first six days.

A senior German minister and the German-Turkish scientist who developed the Biontech vaccine questioned why the EU had not amassed a sufficient stockpile of the only vaccine it had licensed. Brussels has ordered up to 300 million doses of the jab — barely enough to cover a third of the EU’s 450 million residents — but turned down an offer of an extra 500 million doses, according to Der Spiegel magazine. This has left the bloc dependent on a range of vaccines that have yet to be licensed, including those from Sanofi and Curevac, which are not expected to be available until at least the second half of the year.

Ugur Sahin, Biontech’s chief executive, said that things were “not looking rosy” and that the procurement strategy had left the EU with a hole that would be difficult to fill.

Markus Söder, the chief minister of Bavaria, said that the bloc’s vaccine orders had been “clearly inadequate”. “It’s hard to explain why other countries are vaccinating faster, even though a very good vaccine was developed in Germany,” he told Bild am Sonntag.

There has also been frustration in France, which managed only 50 vaccinations a day last week. The government is now changing tack and has begun vaccinating healthcare workers over the age of 50 after heavy criticism of its approach of administering the jab only in care homes. The campaign had been slowed by the need to obtain written permission from every recipient.

Mr Macron was reported to have rebuked Olivier Véran, the health minister, and other officials on New Year’s Eve, according to the Journal du Dimanche. “Things have got to change fast and a lot,” he was said to have told them.

Mr Véran has brought forward the schedule for vaccinating older medical professionals by a month and announced plans to open vaccination centres in towns and cities from early February to treat people over 75 and then those over 65. Critics said that this was still far from enough.

The cautious approach had been adopted in response to polls suggesting that 60 per cent of French people would refuse to accept vaccination. Some are fearful that inoculation might damage their health and a minority believe that Covid-19 and the vaccine are all part of a conspiracy by “the elite”.

The far-right National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, said that France had become a laughing-stock. “We have vaccinated in one week the same number of people as Germany vaccinates in 30 minutes,” Jordan Bardella, the party’s deputy leader, said yesterday.

In Germany the initial wave of vaccinations did indeed come off more smoothly. Over the first seven days 188,553 doses were administered, compared with 137,897 by the same point in Britain’s inoculation campaign. Most of the recipients were either care home residents or frontline medical staff.

By New Year’s Eve 1.3 million doses of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine had been delivered to Germany’s 16 regional governments, with at least 2.7 million more to follow by the end of this month, according to the federal health ministry.

“It’s going precisely to plan,” Jens Spahn, the health minister, told German television over the weekend. There have, however, been teething problems. Some batches failed to arrive and in parts of the country inoculation centres have yet to materialise.

The national hotline used to arrange vaccinations has been overloaded with calls. Karin Maag, a senior MP in Mr Spahn’s Christian Democratic Union party, said that she had spent two days fruitlessly trying to arrange a vaccination for her 85-year-old mother. As in France, there have been difficulties in administering the jab in old people’s homes.

The pressure on states across Europe has been compounded by the spread of the apparently more contagious “UK variant” of the coronavirus, which has now been detected in countries such as Germany, Italy, Sweden and Denmark.

The availability of the virus was at an all time high during the Christmas to New Year's period and it would seem that there will be the mother-of-all surges here in a few weeks. With the lax behavior of Americans, the exponential growth capability of the virus is sure to cause another half million deaths in the next three months as the vaccination distribution is figured out. No good news for the USA is right!

What a surprise that they would put nationalism and profit before the welfare of their own people.

Thailand to get 2 million shots of China’s SinovacThailand will get its first lot of Covid-19 vaccines from China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd next month, allowing the country in the middle of a resurgence of the coronavirus outbreak to begin inoculating people with the highest risks for infections.
The Chinese vaccine in three batches, with the first 200,000 doses arriving in February, 800,000 in March, and another 1 million in April, according to the Health Ministry. Thailand has also started local production of vaccines developed by AstraZeneca Plc under a technology transfer agreement, which is expected to be ready for distribution in May, the ministry said.

Anyone rushing to queue up for the Chinese shot?

^ Fuck no. Given a chouce between the Chinese produced and the local produced AstraZenca, would go with the local. Thailand actually has a fairly good record of local vaccine production.

Not just the EU, but the UK as well.

The UK has changed strategy to prioritise the administering of a first dose to as many as possible, rather than less people with 2 doses. This drastically reduces the effectiveness of the vaccination but hey, who cares as long as they get it.

The AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine has been approved in the UK for emergency use. I heard it won't be ready for approval in the EU until at least March, by which time there will be ample supplies.

Not quite true Troy. The initial vaccine dose was found to be 70% effective for up to 3 months, hence the decision to defer the second dose to get as many people initially vaccinated as possible.
Not only has the AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine been approved, it will actually start to be administered today in the UK, and over the next few weeks will ramp up to 2 million doses a week.

^ Apologies, you are correct in that it has been approved for use in the UK.

The BioNTech/Pfizer is supposed to be more effective at single dose than the Oxford one, I heard 90% vs 64% but this is not scientifically proven. Both reach their high efficacy when two doses are administered 4-12 weeks apart.

Korat quarantining travellers from 'red zones'

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Travellers from provinces declared maximum control "red zones" are now required to enter quarantine for 14 days on arriving in this northeastern province.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has declared 28 provinces "red zones".

Nakhon Ratchasima is a "yellow zone" under "close surveillance".

Governor Wichien Chantaranothai, chairman of the provincial communicable disease committee, said on Monday the restriction was required to stem the latest surge of the novel coronavirus. The number of new infections in the province stood at seven, with no more new cases since the New Year.

To be fully on guard, tough measures were needed, he said.

Therefore, on arriving in Nakhon Ratchasima people coming from "red zones" were required to have a health certificate and fill in a form seeking an entry permit before reporting to local health volunteers or community leaders. After that they must go into 14-day quarantine.

Korat residents could quarantine at home, and self-quarantine at the place they stay for non-Korat residents staying overnight or longer in the province.

Violators were liable to penalties under the Communicable Diseases Act of 2015.

The governor said education facilities in the province had not been ordered closed. However, administrators could decide themselves to close their doors if students and teachers were thought to be at-risk.

Some private schools had postponed re-opening after the New Year holidays, from Jan 5 to Jan 11, while they monitored the Covid-19 situation, he added.

'Just stay home' - Thai PM urges compliance as virus cases hit record

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand’s prime minister on Monday urged the public to stay home to help contain the country’s biggest coronavirus outbreak yet and avoid a strict lockdown, as authorities confirmed a daily record 745 new infections.

The government has declared 28 provinces, including Bangkok, as high-risk zones and asked people to work from home and avoid gathering or travel beyond their provinces, as infection numbers climb in the wake of outbreak first detected last month at a seafood market near the capital.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said the government was mindful of the potential economic damage from strong containment measures.

“We don’t want to lock down the entire country because we know what the problems are, therefore can you all lock down yourselves?” he told reporters.

“This is up to everyone, if we don’t want to get infected just stay home for 14 to 15 days, if you think like this then things will be safe, easier for screening,” Prayuth added.

There was also one new death confirmed on Monday. Of the 745 cases included in the day’s total, 541 had been reported on Sunday by provincial authorities.

Thailand has recorded 8,439 coronavirus cases and 65 deaths overall, among the lowest numbers in Asia.

Most new cases are linked to a migrant worker cluster which started in Samut Sakhon, a province southwest of Bangkok, and led to infections in more than half of the country’s provinces.

Bangkok authorities ordered restaurants and street food vendors to halt dine-in services between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Tuesday to reduce the risk of the virus spreading. Take-outs will be allowed.

Alcohol sales in restaurants have been banned and bars and other entertainment venues closed in high-risk provinces. Provincial governors have been empowered to set their own restrictions.

Schools and education centres nationwide have been closed for one month.

Cambodia reopens schools and museums after five week coronavirus lockdown

Cambodia on Monday (January 4) reopened schools, museums, entertainment venues, bars, and sports stadiums after a five-week lockdown aimed at curbing coronavirus infections across the country.
Students could be seen queuing up for temperature checks and hand washing at a local primary school in the capital of Phnom Penh on Monday morning.

Venues were technically allowed to open from January 1, but many only resumed on Monday due to the public holiday. Cambodia has enforced a total of three nationwide lockdowns during the pandemic, the most recent of which starting from November 28.

While a 43-year-old Tuk Tuk driver, Theun Ngor said he is worried, but he thinks Cambodians follwed the instructions by the government on wearing masks, ashing hands, and social distancing, so Cambodians have less risk of infection than Thailand or Vietnam.
