Several estimates but most state "Most experts think the vaccine will not be widely available until the middle of 2021."

Christ, the UK is completely foked.

Just under 100,000 infected every day.

And the epidemic is doubling in size every 9 days.

Covid doesn't travel, people travel. I don't get why it's so difficult to simply isolate at home and take simple precautions if really needing to get to a shop etc.

I think they are extrapolating from their data and including asymptomatic cases.

This news came out under the radar. Some interesting detail there.

Moderna is prepping for the global launch of its potential coronavirus vaccine, already taking in $1.1 billion in deposits from governments awaiting the potentially lifesaving drug, the biotech firm said Thursday in its third-quarter earnings report.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company said it was in ongoing talks with the World Health Organization-backed COVAX initiative on a tiered pricing proposal for its potential vaccine, which it’s tentatively calling mRNA-1273. It already has supply agreements in North America, the Middle East and in other regions of the world.

“We are actively preparing for the launch of mRNA-1273 and we have signed a number of supply agreements with governments around the world,” Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said in a press release. “Moderna is committed to the highest data quality standards and rigorous scientific research as we continue to work with regulators to advance mRNA-1273.”

Shares of Moderna were up more than 3% in midmorning trading.

Moderna, a front-runner in the Covid-19 vaccine race, said last week it had completed enrollment for its 30,000-participant late-stage trial. As of last week, more than 25,650 participants had received the second of the company’s two-dose Covid-19 vaccine. Moderna said about 37% of the participants were from diverse communities and 42% were at high risk of severe disease.

Just over half, 53%, of the participants in the trial are male and 47% are female, according to a presentation from the company. The vast majority of participants are over the age of 25, with only 5% in the 18 to-24 age group.

On a call with investors Thursday, Bancel said the company expects the data and safety monitoring board, which will assess whether the trial is successful, will conduct its first interim analysis in November. The board will not conduct its analysis until after there are 53 cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Moderna’s phase three trial.

Moderna’s vaccine, which is being developed with the help of the National Institutes of Health, contains genetic material called messenger RNA, or mRNA, which scientists hope provokes the immune system to fight the virus.
In August, Moderna said it was charging between $32 and $37 per dose for its vaccine for some customers, under cheaper “pandemic pricing.” The company said it was in discussion for larger volume agreements that will have a lower price.

Moderna said Thursday its vaccine must be stored at minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit, which will preserve it for up to six months. By comparison, Pfizer’s vaccine requires a storage temperature of minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit.

Moderna’s vaccine can also be refrigerated at about 36 degrees for up to seven days. It needs to be administered within 12 hours after thawing.

Separately, the company reported a third-quarter loss of $233.6 million, or 59 cents a share, wider than the loss of 43 cents per share analysts surveyed by Refinitiv were expecting. The company brought in $157.9 million in revenue, higher than the $77.5 million Wall Street was expecting.

Executives held a call with investors at 8 a.m. ET.

Trumpanzees: They're as thick as shit.

A majority of Americans want a national mask mandate in response to the coronavirus pandemic, a new poll has found.

When asked about enforcing a nation mask mandate in the United States, 58 per cent of Americans agreed that there should be one while 22 per cent disagreed, according to an exclusive Independent poll with JL Partners.

Additionally, there was a dividing line between supporters of Donald Trump, who thought a mask mandate should be enforced, with 39 per cent agreeing to one compared to 38 per cent who disagreed.

A coronavirus strain that emerged in Spain in June has spread across Europe and now makes up a large proportion of infections in several countries, researchers said, highlighting the role of travel in the pandemic and the need to track mutations.

The variant, which has not been found to be inherently more dangerous, was first identified among farm workers in the eastern Spanish regions of Aragon and Catalonia.

Over the last two months, it has accounted for close to 90% of new infections in Spain, according to the research paper, authored by seven researchers with backing by Swiss and Spanish public-sector science institutions.

It was posted on a so-called preprint server and is yet to be peer reviewed for publication in a scientific journal.

The strain has crossed European borders and accounted for 40-70% of new infections in Switzerland, Ireland and the United Kingdom in September, they found.

The scientists said the strain's characteristic mutation did not give it any apparent edge and its success may be down to the people who caught it first being particularly mobile and sociable. But in some places outside Spain the variant's journey developed a dynamic of its own, indicating it may have a transmission advantage.

“Its frequency in the UK has continued to increase even after quarantine-free travel was discontinued and the main summer travel period ended. Thus this variant might transmit faster than competing variants,” the researchers wrote.

Efforts to sequence viral genomes differ widely across Europe, limiting their research, they said.

“The rapid rise of these variants in Europe highlights the importance of genomic surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic ... it is imperative to understand whether novel variants impact the severity of the disease.

”The World Health Organisation said in July that there was no evidence mutations of the virus had led to more severe disease. It formed a working group to better understand how mutations behave.

All viruses make only imperfect copies of themselves when they infect a host but the tendency for this random drift varies between classes of viruses. Coronaviruses, which were also behind the 2002–2004 SARS outbreak, are known to be more stable than, for instance, the seasonal flu, which requires a new vaccine every year.

Anyway, good news, deaths are down to practically zero and apparently therapeutics are available if you do get it.

It's on the BBC website as well now with possible lockdown from Monday. It's about two weeks too late again.

Germany is going into partial lockdown on Monday as well with bars closing and restaurants able to sell take-away only. Crazy shopping returned yesterday where we are with heavily loaded trolleys seen everywhere.

Covid doesn't travel, people travel. I don't get why it's so difficult to simply isolate at home and take simple precautions if really needing to get to a shop etc.

It's also been proven that one can still get on with their daily activities by simply following the basic mitigation guidelines/protocol - proper face coverings, distancing, avoiding crowds/groups/gathers, washing hands often, etc...

It quite obvious as to the reasons that the cases and deaths continue to grow 100 fold every day/week/month in the usual parts of the world.
One would think that after nine months of these repeated cautionary notes of prevention, a greater percentage of the populations would get it. I guess not.

    The COVID-2019 Thread-untitled-jpg

The government’s Sage experts said that coronavirus infections and hospital admissions were exceeding the "worst case scenario" planning levels earlier this month - four days before Boris Johnson announced the three-tier system of restrictions.
A document from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) summarising the Sage meeting of October 8 said incidence and prevalence across the UK continue to increase with data showing “clear increases” in hospital and ICU admissions, particularly in the North of England.
The paper said projections indicate the number of deaths is “highly likely” to exceed Reasonable Worst Case Scenario (RWCS) planning levels within the next two weeks. (October 22).
“Well over 100 new deaths per day are projected to occur within two weeks, even if strict new interventions are put in place immediately,” the document said, adding: “In all scenarios the epidemic is still growing.”

I honestly think that seeing the family back in the UK will only happen in 2022, I think that 2021 won't see any mass roll out of a vaccine as understandably key workers and the vulnerable will need to get it first.
