Russia Ignores Requests to Share Controversial Coronavirus Vaccine Data

Russian scientists have not shared the data behind controversial clinical trial results into a coronavirus vaccine published in leading medical journal The Lancet a month ago, researchers who requested the information told The Moscow Times.


A group of 37 scientists from 12 countries have now signed an open letter questioning the published results into Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine, citing apparent duplications of data concerning antibody responses among participants given different formulations of the vaccine. They say such duplication is “highly unlikely” and raised the possibility of data manipulation.


Russia’s state research center responsible for developing the vaccine, the Gamaleya Institute, has disputed the claims. And in a reply published Sept. 21 by the Lancet, the Institute said it would share the raw data if other researchers and scientists sent them a formal request. The original publication only included results in diagram form.


But the Gamaleya Institute has ignored multiple public calls and at least two official proposals requesting access to the data, according to the group of researchers who first raised concerns.

India's new paper Covid-19 test could be a game changer

A team of scientists in India has developed an inexpensive paper-based test for coronavirus that could give fast results similar to a pregnancy test. The BBC's Soutik Biswas and Krutika Pathi unpack how it works.


The test, named after a famous Indian fictional detective, is based on a gene-editing technology called Crispr. Scientists estimate that the kit - called Feluda - would return results in under an hour and cost 500 rupees (about $6.75; £5.25).


Feluda will be made by a leading Indian conglomerate, Tata, and could be the world's first paper-based Covid-19 test available in the market.
"This is a simple, precise, reliable, scalable and frugal test," Professor K Vijay Raghavan, principal scientific adviser to the Indian government, told the BBC.


Researchers at the Delhi-based CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), where Feluda was developed, as well as private labs, tried out the test on samples from about 2,000 patients, including ones who had already tested positive for the coronavirus.


They found that the new test had 96% sensitivity and 98% specificity. The accuracy of a test is based on these two proportions. A test that's highly sensitive will detect almost everyone who has the disease; and a test that has high-specificity will correctly rule out almost everyone who doesn't have the disease.


The first ensures not too many false negative results; and the second not too many false positives. India's drug regulator has cleared the test for commercial use.


With more than six million confirmed infections, India has the world's second-highest Covid-19 caseload. More than 100,000 people in the country have died of the disease so far.


After a slow start, India is now testing a million samples a day in more than 1,200 laboratories across the country. It is using two tests.

Manchester is the country's coronavirus hotspot as new data shows it has the highest infection rate of any area in England.

Figures released by Public Health England show the 7-day rate in Manchester has reached 495.6 cases per 100,000 population for the week ending on October 1.


The new high came as infection rates in every Greater Manchester borough were revised upwards after a government computer glitch meant thousands of positive test results were missed.

Public Health England said nearly 16,000 cases - which had not been reported over the previous ten days - had been added to the official data over the weekend.

The new rules will apply to licensed premises across the central belt, including Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Pubs and restaurants will be able to open in other parts of Scotland - but can only serve alcohol outdoors.

When an 80-year-old man at a bar near Buffalo, N.Y., noticed a fellow customer not wearing a face mask, he confronted him. The customer responded by swiftly pushing him to the ground, the police said. Five days later, the man was dead.
On Monday, the customer, Donald Lewinski, 65, of West Seneca, N.Y., was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide in the death of the 80-year-old, Rocco Sapienza. The case is believed to be one of the first of its kind in New York State.
Mr. Lewinski pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in court in Erie County. The charge carries up to four years in prison.

There appear to be two schools of thought:

One that thinks you can isolate the vulnerable and let it rip through the rest until you hit herd immunity.

But another, more cautious voice that says you cannot easily identify the vulnerable.

Many people of all ages have succumbed to this virus without pre-existing conditions.
