    Are we surprised?

A group of prominent scientists and doctors has questioned the results of Russia’s research into a Covid-19 vaccine.
The group said there are a number of unexplained apparent duplications in Russia’s data — published in scientific journal The Lancet on Friday — concerning the antibody response of volunteers who took part in early stage trials of Russia's Sputnik V vaccine.
“There are very strange patterns in the data,” Enrico Bucci, a biology professor at Temple University in the U.S. who has published an open letter highlighting the concerns told The Moscow Times.

“By strange patterns I mean there are duplicate values for different [groups of] patients … which cannot be,” Bucci said, in reference to results concerning the production of antibodies by groups of patients who had been tested with different formulations of the vaccine.......

France is worrying with nearly 20,000 new cases in the last 2 days. Spain not looking good either and UK on the increase again.

I was going to take the wife to Brittany in late October but that doesn't look such a good idea. Plan B was to visit Dad in UK but not promising. Wife wants to stay isolated in Germany until it's all over, or at least quarantine on arrival in Bangkok ends.

The coronavirus pandemic is creating an "enormous strain" on relationships, an advice charity has warned, with family lawyers predicting a "post-lockdown divorce boom".

Citizens Advice said divorce guidance searches had risen since April after a drop in visits when lockdown started.

It said views on its divorce webpage on the first September weekend were up 25% compared with the same date in 2019.

Slater and Gordon said the pandemic had "exacerbated" marriage problems.

The law firm said an increase in conveyancing instructions was "signalling an increase in couples separating and wanting to sell their properties".

Citizens Advice said more people were viewing guidance on divorce compared with last year
It said September was "ordinarily a busy month for family lawyers" as couples would often "attempt a last-ditch summer holiday" before ending their relationship.

Family lawyer Georgina Chase said about 30% of matrimonial enquires she had received had been from couples separating because of issues in relationships being "exacerbated" during the lockdown.

"It's an extreme change of circumstances for spouses and any issues in the marriage have been compounded by lockdown, that's where we are seeing the increase," she said.

"It's the straw that broke the camel's back."

Ms Chase said the increase in cases meant a "backlog" was forming in courts' administration.

How many coronavirus cases in your area?
Is it safe to go to the pub?
How close are we to finding a vaccine?
Citizens Advice data showed searches for advice about getting a divorce peaked on Sundays, with the designated web page being in the top two most-viewed on its website for the past four weekends.

On the first weekend of September, its advice webpage amassed more than 2200 views, a 25% rise on the same weekend in 2019.

Tom MacInnes, chief analyst for Citizens Advice, said: "We know that this pandemic has put an enormous strain on people financially but our data shows that strain is also being felt in people's relationships."

He said the types of advice sought differed on weekdays and weekends at a time where the charity has seen record-breaking demand.

What a discovery of an unbiased media and no surprise by a TD member...

While currently everywhere the countries are facing hundreds percent rise of new cases, only in Russia we know the cause, don't we?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday announced a new countrywide lockdown will be imposed amid a stubborn surge in coronavirus cases.

Beginning Friday, the start of the Jewish High Holiday season, schools, restaurants and hotels will shut down, among other businesses, and Israelis will face restrictions on movement.

"Our goal is to stop the increase (in cases) and lower morbidity," Netanyahu said in a nationally broadcast statement. "I know that these steps come at a difficult price for all of us. This is not the holiday we are used to."

AstraZeneca Resumes Vaccine Tests in South Africa After Halt
    Sept. 15, 2020, 11:17 PM

AstraZeneca Plc and the University of Oxford have restarted testing an experimental Covid-19 vaccine in South Africa, according to a researcher overseeing the trial, but tests remain on hold in the U.S. after studies were halted due to concerns about a participant who became ill.

The trial in South Africa resumed Tuesday, according to Shabir Madhi, a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand who is leading the study. The move follows a recommendation in the U.K. to resume tests.

    Sounds promising.

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine scientists have isolated the smallest biological molecule to date that completely and specifically neutralizes the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is the cause of COVID-19. This antibody component, which is 10 times smaller than a full-sized antibody, has been used to construct a drug — known as Ab8 — for potential use as a therapeutic and prophylactic against SARS-CoV-2.

The researchers report today (September 14, 2020) in the journal Cell that Ab8 is highly effective in preventing and treating SARS-CoV-2 infection in mice and hamsters. Its tiny size not only increases its potential for diffusion in tissues to better neutralize the virus, but also makes it possible to administer the drug by alternative routes, including inhalation. Importantly, it does not bind to human cells — a good sign that it won’t have negative side-effects in people.

Ab8 was evaluated in conjunction with scientists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, as well as the University of British Columbia and University of Saskatchewan.

“Ab8 not only has potential as therapy for COVID-19, but it also could be used to keep people from getting SARS-CoV-2 infections,” said co-author John Mellors, M.D., chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at UPMC and Pitt. “Antibodies of larger size have worked against other infectious diseases and have been well tolerated, giving us hope that it could be an effective treatment for patients with COVID-19 and for protection of those who have never had the infection and are not immune.”

The tiny antibody component is the variable, heavy chain (VH) domain of an immunoglobulin, which is a type of antibody found in the blood. It was found by “fishing” in a pool of more than 100 billion potential candidates using the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein as bait. Ab8 is created when the VH domain is fused to part of the immunoglobulin tail region, adding the immune functions of a full-size antibody without the bulk.

Abound Bio, a newly formed UPMC-backed company, has licensed Ab8 for worldwide development.

Dimiter Dimitrov, Ph.D., senior author of the Cell publication and director of Pitt’s Center for Antibody Therapeutics, was one of the first to discover neutralizing antibodies for the original SARS coronavirus in 2003. In the ensuing years, his team discovered potent antibodies against many other infectious diseases, including those caused by MERS-CoV, dengue, Hendra and Nipah viruses. The antibody against Hendra and Nipah viruses has been evaluated in humans and approved for clinical use on a compassionate basis in Australia.
Clinical trials are testing convalescent plasma — which contains antibodies from people who already had COVID-19 — as a treatment for those battling the infection, but there isn’t enough plasma for those who might need it, and it isn’t proven to work.

That’s why Dimitrov and his team set out to isolate the gene for one or more antibodies that block the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which would allow for mass production. In February, Wei Li, Ph.D., assistant director of Pitt’s Center for Therapeutic Antibodies and co-lead author of the research, began sifting through large libraries of antibody components made using human blood samples and found multiple therapeutic antibody candidates, including Ab8, in record time.

Then a team at UTMB’s Center for Biodefense and Emerging Diseases and Galveston National Laboratory, led by Chien-Te Kent Tseng, Ph.D., tested Ab8 using live SARS-CoV-2 virus. At very low concentrations, Ab8 completely blocked the virus from entering cells. With those results in hand, Ralph Baric, Ph.D., and his UNC colleagues tested Ab8 at varying concentrations in mice using a modified version of SARS-CoV-2. Even at the lowest dose, Ab8 decreased by 10-fold the amount of infectious virus in those mice compared to their untreated counterparts. Ab8 also was effective in treating and preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection in hamsters, as evaluated by Darryl Falzarano, Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Saskatchewan. Sriram Subramaniam, Ph.D., and his colleagues at the University of British Columbia uncovered the unique way Ab8 neutralizes the virus so effectively by using sophisticated electron microscopic techniques.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is a global challenge facing humanity, but biomedical science and human ingenuity are likely to overcome it,” said Mellors, also Distinguished Professor of Medicine, who holds the Endowed Chair for Global Elimination of HIV and AIDS at Pitt. “We hope that the antibodies we have discovered will contribute to that triumph.”

Leaked FEMA Memo Reveals 17 Percent Jump in U.S. COVID Deaths Last Week

A leaked internal memo from the Federal Emergency Management Agency has reportedly revealed a near-17 percent spike in coronavirus-related deaths inside the United States last week. ABC News obtained the memo that showed the trend in new deaths has shot way up since the start of September. It said that 5,906 coronavirus-related deaths were recorded in the U.S. from Sept. 9-15, which represents a 16.6 percent increase compared with the seven days prior. That figure comes despite 261,204 new cases of COVID-19 being confirmed in the same period, which is a 0.7 percent decrease from the previous week. Officials have found that coronavirus deaths are a lagging indicator and rise in the weeks after cases surge.

People arriving from Singapore and Thailand in England and Scotland will not need to quarantine from Saturday morning, the government has said.
They have been added to the list of "travel corridor" countries.
But travellers coming from Slovenia and Guadeloupe will have to self-isolate for two weeks.
Both have also been added to Wales' quarantine list, while arrivals there from Gibraltar and Thailand will not need to self-isolate.
The changes come into force at 04:00 BST on Saturday.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said there had been "a significant change in both the level and pace of confirmed cases of coronavirus" in both Slovenia and Guadeloupe.
Data from Slovenia shows that its seven-day rate of cases is 29.1 per 100,000 people, up from 14.4 in the previous seven days.
The rate for Guadeloupe has risen more than six-fold in the past four weeks, the DfT said.
When a country's rate rises above 20, the UK government considers imposing quarantine restrictions.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Twisted Sister singer Dee Snider took to social media to condemn anti-maskers who went into a Florida Target store blaring the group’s hit “We’re Not Gonna Take It” while ripping off their masks.
In a tweet Wednesday, Snider called the stunt “moronic,” and shared a video that was recorded by an upset customer inside the Target at Coral Ridge Mall in Fort Lauderdale. The video had more than 30 million views.
Snider said the group doesn’t have his “permission or blessing to use my song for their moronic cause.”

Russia Clears Two Coronavirus Drugs for Pharmacy Sale

Two Russian-made coronavirus treatment drugs have been cleared for pharmacy sale, allowing for widespread at-home treatment of the infection, the Health Ministry announced in a statement to the state-run RIA-Novosti news agency Thursday.

Both drugs are Russia-manufactured variants of favipiravir, the generic version of an anti-flu medication developed by Japan’s Fujifilm. Clinical trials of the pill-form drug showed reduced recovery times among coronavirus patients, though only Russia, India and China officially recommend it for treating the virus.

One of the approved medications, registered under brand name Areplivir, will appear on pharmacy shelves in most Russian regions starting Monday, the head of its manufacturer Promomed confirmed to the Kommersant business daily.

Another drug, Koronavir, is expected to become available at the same time.

If any kind of anti-viral can be sold OTC this fall, I reckon it is a good thing. Might keep a lot of people out of the hospitals.

Read the post again, favipiravir was tested already in March-April and it does exactly what is mentioned in the post, nothing more.

Well the indignant chinky insistence that 'rona couldn't possibly have been caused by a lab accident is looking pretty silly. Thank fuck it was farm animals and not their usual diet of wild exotic fauna. Mind you they are sharing this a year after it happened.

China: Thousands infected with zoonosis disease after factory leak

More than 3,000 people in northern China have been diagnosed with a bacterial infection after an outbreak caused by a leak at a biopharmaceutical company last year.

Almost 22,000 people in the city of Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, were tested and 3,245 came back positive for brucellosis, the National Health Commission (NHC) of Lanzhou has said.

The infection is a highly contagious zoonosis, which according to the NHS website is caused by drinking unpasteurised milk or dairy products, or contact with bodily fluids of farm animals, such as cows, goats, sheep and pigs.

Symptoms include a high temperature, loss of appetite, sweating, headaches, extreme tiredness and back and joint pain.

In a statement, the NHC said brucellosis was detected in November 2019, after a leak "caused by contaminated exhaust from a vaccine factory in Lanzhou, due to the use of expired disinfectant from late-July to mid-August last year".

Staff at the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, an institution of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences near the factory, were infected - according to a report released by the Gansu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in late December.

The NHC says in response, 11 public hospitals in the city offered "free examinations and treatment".

It's a shame this virus doesn't work more quickly or more viscerally, because then these thick fuckers would be dead or scared to go out and the smart ones could all get back to normal.

LONDON (Reuters) - The reproduction “R” number of COVID-19 infections in the United Kingdom has risen to a range of 1.1-1.4 from last week’s figure of 1.0-1.2, the government said on Friday.

“An R number between 1.1 and 1.4 means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 14 other people,” it said. It added that the number of new infections was growing by 2% to 7% every day.
