What a bus trip can tell us about COVID-19 transmission

    The COVID-2019 Thread-12656702-16x9-xlarge-jpg

This story takes us from a bus full of religious worshippers travelling to an outdoor event in eastern China

    Catching COVID on a bus

On a sunny winter's day on January 19 this year, 126 people took two buses to an outdoor worship event being held at a temple in Yinzhou District in Ningbo.

No confirmed cases of COVID-19 had yet been reported in the city, but unbeknownst to the passengers on one of the buses, one of their number had been infected with the disease a couple of days before, but the person wasn't showing any symptoms.

After the bus ride to and from the temple 23 other passengers on the bus would also develop COVID-19. No-one from the other bus was infected.

    The COVID-2019 Thread-bus-diagram-data-png

The bus trip had the ingredients for COVID-19 to spread via airborne transmission, says Lidia Morawska, director of the International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health at Queensland University of Technology.

There was an infected person on the bus and the air was recirculated inside the bus withno proper ventilation.
"This is a perfect prescription for an outbreak," Professor Morawska says.

Adding further weight to the theory that people were infected by airborne transmission of the virus, is that the researchers studying the case grouped passengers into high and low risk zones depending on their proximity to the infected person, but this didn't have a significant impact on whether they caught the disease or not.

    ^ Following on ...

What bathroom plumbing can tell us about COVID-19 transmission

    Apartment plumbing connects cases

A couple of weeks later further south in Guangzhou, an outbreak of COVID-19 occurred in a high-rise apartment block.

Members of a family living on the 15th floor of the building had recently been to Wuhan where the pandemic started.

On their return, they used the toilet in their master bathroom.

Some days after they first showed symptoms of COVID-19, neighbours on the 25th and 27th floors in apartments directly above theirs were also diagnosed with COVID-19.

    The COVID-2019 Thread-apartment-building-diagram-data-jpg

It is thought virus particles in the faeces of the first family were aerosolised and travelled up the building via the shared drainage system, and through dried out water seals into the other apartments' master bathrooms.

While we probably don't yet know all the details of this case, because outbreak studies are always retrospective, Professor Morawska says the research clearly points to airborne transmission again being the culprit.

And we do have precedence for such disease transmission occurring.

I wonder how big a bounce this will get before they have to shut down again?

Over the next few weeks, Floridians will undergo a high-stakes Covid-19 experiment whether they like it or not: a return to something resembling normal life.

Starting Monday, the Sunshine State is taking its most daring reopening step yet by ending a ban on drinking in bars, about a month after the state’s coronavirus deaths peaked.

Around the same time, Miami-Dade’s school board is expected to clear the way for reopening America’s fourth-largest district, luring hundreds of thousands of children back to classrooms by the end of the month.

As in other Sun Belt states, the pandemic hit Florida hardest from around June to early August, forcing areas that had already reopened to reinstate restrictions and put return-to-school plans on hold. While Florida’s viral wave has waned, the latest steps come amid uncertainty, according to Jason Salemi, a University of South Florida epidemiologist who notes that Floridians are fresh off Labor Day parties and outings that could have spread the virus.

So, gonna be a massive 2nd wave from around now, over the cold Northern-Hemisphere winter months, until it's March-ish? At which point every foking body gets the point of just staying at home, mask and alcohol gel when needing to do shopping etc once/twice a week?

Damn, best of luck to you and your family Chitty.

A family I know contracted Covid in the UK 4-5 months ago, they were wiped-out energy wise for around 5 days, but all came through okay.

I have come to the conclusion based on exhaustive empirical study that Covid is going to fuck humanity up because there are simply just to many stupid fucking idiots in the world.

That or I need to stop reading so much of the toxic sludge-pit that is Twitter.

    I fully agree.

A friend in the UK posts up all stuff about it being a hoax, to go out and join anti-mask rallies etc etc, because it's all a conspiracy made up to make us slaves etc.

JHC, is it so hard to accept there's a virus that spreads and foks people up, so stay inside as much as possible, then mask up etc when going outside, while accepting relatively closed borders for a while.

I think there will be less and less of them after the winter months.

    For two reasons.

The problem in the UK is whole communities are disregarding the rules even the local councils have employed translators to spread the word but to no avail.

Still can't get tested today as no appointments available anywhere in the UK.
Home test kits still currently out of stock.

I do fear this second wave will be worst than the first but not in deaths.

It will destroy the economy, children's education and futures also peoples sanity.

Airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2: The world should face the reality

My overview and then the science article in the post below.

The Northern Hemisphere countries are about to experience amplified potential Virus transmissions as exhaled breath/coughs droplet size shrinks and effectively become aerosols.

The risk is potentially increased due to a typical reduction in humidity which leads to a reduction in droplet size.

Aerosols drift and stay airborn, as shown in the image below.

Masks will be the key, plus, where possible social interaction outside, Public Transport will become a nightmare

    Abstract

Hand washing and maintaining social distance are the main measures recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to avoid contracting COVID-19. Unfortunately, these measured do not prevent infection by inhalation of small droplets exhaled by an infected person that can travel distance of meters or tens of meters in the air and carry their viral content.

Science explains the mechanisms of such transport and there is evidence that this is a significant route of infection in indoor environments.

Despite this, no countries or authorities consider airborne spread of COVID-19 in their regulations to prevent infections transmission indoors.

It is therefore extremely important, that the national authorities acknowledge the reality that the virus spreads through air, and recommend that adequate control measures be implemented to prevent further spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, in particularly removal of the virus-laden droplets from indoor air by ventilation.

    ---

Therefore, we plead that the international and national authorities acknowledge the reality that the virus spreads through air, and recommend that adequate control measures, as discussed above be implemented to prevent further spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Coronavirus vaccine clinical trials resume in U.K. after pause over safety concerns

    Key Points

    • The United Kingdom’s Medicines Health Regulatory Authority that it was safe to resume clinical trials after a brief pause.
    • AstraZeneca paused trials earlier this week due to a potentially unexplained illness.
    • CEO Pascal Soriot said during a private conference call that the illness occurred in a woman in the U.K. who displayed neurological symptoms consistent with a spinal inflammatory disorder called transverse myelitis.
    • Illnesses often occur by chance in large trials but are investigated out of an abundance of caution.

Too many rights; anyone disagree first look at how it works here, you get an order and do it or get nicked. Right or wrong, if gov figures are anywhere near accurate this system works, and that's with the ongoing 'science' they're all talking about, sidestepping the fact that 9 months later it's still shooting in the dark.

Latest I heard in UK is groups of 6-max across the board with 6' (9 sq yds) social distancing rules, which of course won't work but makes the gov look like they're on the case. Why won't it work? - because it's specific! - which means groups of 7-500 will openly flout in defiance, and the authorities look dumb, lose credibility, and fewer people will take the second wave seriously resulting in more infections and lost lives.

Grow a spine, arrest those 7-500, give them all a fine and a criminal record, and the next group of thickos weaned on rights over common sense might think twice.

I have a feeling the conspiracy theorists and freedumb fighters would still operate as they do if we were being ravaged by Ebola, the Bubonic Plague, or some new form of extinction.

The second wave is coming, as is the 3rd, and so on and so on.

Some of these people need a good slap.

You know the meeting’s gone off the rails when someone compares the mayor to Hitler inside of 45 minutes.
Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie understands criticism is part of the job, but on Tuesday he and Town Council had the surreal experience of being called tyrannical traitors and child-trafficking pedophiles — and then compared to the 20th century’s most notorious dictator/mass murderer.

All because they dared to reinstate a modest mask mandate.

Earlier this year, Mount Pleasant was a COVID-19 hot spot. The town shut down, like many places, and has since urged residents to wear masks — voluntarily in most places. Town leaders extended that ordinance Tuesday. Turns out, people have strong opinions about this.

This horrible year has revealed the sad truth that we’ve just about become two Americas, each side eyeing the other with disdain. That was evident at Town Council, as dozens of people showed up in person to share some passionate, er, opinions.

The names have been withheld to protect people from themselves.

Most, well half, were completely reasonable. A local hospital physician told the story of a healthy, middle-age married couple who went to a July Fourth party where no one was wearing masks. Both ended up in the hospital with COVID-19, but only one walked out.

Then there was the woman who said this whole mask thing is a plot to allow pedophiles to more easily, and anonymously, abduct children. She proceeded to insinuate Town Council could be a cabal of child molesters.

“What we’re learning — we the people — are that pedophiles are specifically picked for government positions, and that includes mayors, governors, senators, town council members,” she said. “Do you want to know why? Because they’re easy to manipulate.”

It went downhill from there. For more than two hours, people alternately complained about folks not wearing masks while others said they’re tired of being judged for not wearing masks. Of course, one guy predicted this overreach ends with the the government taking our guns.

It’s hard to believe all these people inhabit the same planet, much less the same community. But council treated everyone equally. Nurses — who were accused of being Haynie props by anti-maskers — talked about treating coronavirus patients. The same amount of time was given to experts who’d gotten their information from, well, the internet.

For all the hostility anti-maskers say was emanating from the “sheep,” they were the ones shouting. One man swore if council reenacted a mask ordinance, “We’ll be watching you!”

Uh, shouldn’t they be watching the pedophiles?

That’s not to make light of pedophilia, which is a serious issue. But it isn’t now legal in California, despite what one woman claimed. It’s odd that so many people have no trouble believing a global conspiracy theory, yet cannot be convinced a pandemic that’s killed nearly 200,000 people in this country alone is real.

Haynie says the takeaway shouldn’t be the spectacle, but that Mount Pleasant, at Gov. Henry McMaster’s urging, has rejoined dozens of communities across the state in requiring masks to be worn in some public places.

For the opposition, Councilman Tom O’Rourke noted the town’s mask ordinance is so weak as to be ineffective. He has a point (see: Shem Creek bars), but it’s all council could realistically pass.

South Carolina cities with mask mandates have seen their cases drop by 40%. So what’s this hurt, other than vanity?

And if these folks are willing to say some of this stuff in public, perhaps they have bigger reasons to feel self-conscious.

It didn’t help that Councilwoman Kathy Landing gave credence to the conspiracies, and Councilman Jake Rambo tried some both sides-ism. Which, he conceded, only made everyone mad. But that’s the problem — everyone’s mad these days.

Difference is, some people listen to epidemiologists, others to the guys behind Pizzagate.

“This shouldn’t be a political issue, it’s a public health issue,” said one woman.

Amen. Trouble is, the two Americas can’t agree. In one, changing health regulations and mask debates are simply proof this virus is all malarkey. On Tuesday, several doctors explained that, as more data is collected, our understanding of the virus changes. In other words, science evolves.

The same can’t be said for everyone.
