Most of the damage had already been done by mid-March, at which stage people were still largely ignorant about the effects of the virus and how rapidly it spread. The climate obviously has quite a big part in the huge disparity of cases and deaths when compared to Thailand, but no doubt the Thai government have opted for more of a be all and end all approcahc to the virus whilst not considering the huge ramifications it will have for the future of the economy - which, let's face it, will be totally and uttrely fucked. The knock-on from that will be abject poverty which may lead to more death and a soaring crime rate, more than any virus could cause.

Just saying that at present the UK are playing the game, wearing masks and generally 'staying alert' as Boris would have it.

    Another fucking retard.

I guess he's white because they didn't kill him. In fact they shot him in the arse.

A man in Pennsylvania opened fire last week on a Bethlehem cigar store employee after refusing to wear a mask inside the store, police said.

The next day, police said, he shot at officers with an AK-47 during a traffic stop near his home.

A man identified by police as Adam Zaborowski, 35, of Slatington, entered Cigars International in Bethlehem Township, about 70 miles north of Philadelphia, at 11:23 a.m. Friday, police said. He was not wearing a face covering as the store requires and the governor has mandated, according to Bethlehem police.

Employees advised the man that customers must wear masks to protect against the spread of the
    coronavirus, police said.

Police said the staff told Zaborowski that if he was not comfortable wearing a face covering, they would serve him curbside. Zaborowski became irate, grabbed two cigars from a shelf and exited the store without paying, police alleged.

Police accused Zaborowski of pulling out a semiautomatic handgun and firing once in the air and twice at an employee who confronted him outside. A patron was sitting outside the store in the direction he fired, police said.

No one was injured, and Zaborowski fled, said police, who said he was identified by investigators and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery and reckless endangerment.

"Due to prior offenses, he was also charged with persons prohibited to possess a firearm," police said.

At 9:35 a.m. Saturday, a Slatington police officer and two Pennsylvania state troopers stopped Zaborowski while he was driving, authorities said. After he stopped, he jumped out of the vehicle and started shooting at police with an AK-47, striking a Slatington police car, State Trooper Nathan Branosky said.

"Both the Slatington Borough officer and troopers returned fire and struck Zaborowski," Branosky said.
Zaborowski was flown to a hospital. The Slatington police officer suffered a minor injury, state police said. No troopers were hurt.

Zaborowski's attorney, John Waldron, said his client is in a hospital recovering from gunshot wounds to his leg and buttocks.

Zaborowski faces 22 charges related to the Slatington incident, including attempted homicide, aggravated assault and robbery, Waldron said Monday.

Zaborowski, who is being held on $1 million bail, had lost his job because of the coronavirus pandemic and had recently lost custody of his child, Waldron said.

"Not a defense or excuse, but he had stressors going on in his life," Waldron said. "A lot of people have stress, and some handle it better than others."

They're not going to get that until November.

Washington, DC, August 4, 2020 – As the death toll around COVID-19 continues to climb, a new NPR/Ipsos poll shows that a strong majority of Americans favor a single, national strategy to combat the virus. Most Americans also support bold government action to slow the spread of the virus, from a topdown strategy on when to reopen businesses and schools, to laws requiring masks in public, and expanding COVID-19 testing, free of charge. Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the federal government should take on more debt to provide Americans with another economic stimulus check and extend federal unemployment benefits.

    Detailed Findings

Americans want the federal government to take widespread action on COVID-19. There is broad, bipartisan support for a number of proposals aimed to limit the spread of COVID-19.

    • Two-thirds of Americans believe our country is handling the pandemic worse than other countries (65%) and favor a single, national strategy for combatting the virus’ spread (67%).

    • Strong majorities are in favor of government funding to expand COVID-19 testing and make it free of charge (85%), federal funding to manufacture protective equipment and make a COVID-19 vaccine available to all Americans (83% each), enacting state laws to require mask wearing in public at all times (76%), and a single, national strategy for when businesses (62%) and schools (60%) can reopen. All of these proposals are supported by half or more of both Republicans and Democrats.

Trump says coronavirus death toll ‘is what it is’ as he insists pandemic is ‘under control’ in U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump participates in an executive order signing event on “hiring American” in the very dark Cabinet Room of the White House, with the lights low and curtains drawn, in Washington, U.S., August 3, 2020.
    Jonathan Ernst | Reuters

    Key Points

    • President Trump insisted that the coronavirus pandemic is “under control” in the United States even when confronted with the staggering death tolls from the virus.
    • “They are dying. That’s true, and -- it is what it is,” Trump said during a contentious interview with Axios’ Jonathan Swan.
    • Swan also challenged Trump on his interpretation of the trajectory of cases and deaths from Covid-19 in the U.S.

Anti-China feeling masks West's own COVID-19 failures: The Lancet chief editor

"To blame China for this pandemic is to rewrite the history of COVID-19 and to marginalize the failings of Western nations, said Dr. Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of medical journal The Lancet.

"The present wave of anti-China sentiment has now evolved into an unpleasant, even racist, sinophobia, which threatens international peace and security,"

Dr. Horton said in an opinion article recently published by British newspaper The Guardian.

"At moments of geopolitical stress, it is surely better to intensify, not weaken, personal and institutional relationships. It is surely better to build better understanding between peoples," Dr. Horton said in the article.

"China's 1.4 billion people are not immune from the economic shocks that are currently enveloping the world. A pandemic is a moment for solidarity between peoples, not conflict between governments," he said.

A pandemic is a moment for "conciliation, respect, and honesty between friends", Dr. Horton noted.
Instead of accelerating a new cold war between the West and China, Dr. Horton called on medicine and medical science to help establish a new compact between nations.

He also praised China's scientists who acted "decisively and responsibly" to protect the health of the Chinese people in the case of COVID-19.

"They advised early lockdown to cut the lines of viral transmission. They implemented strict physical distancing policies to reduce social mixing. And they built temporary hospitals to expand bed capacity and to enable triage of the sickest patients to intensive care," he said."

JACKSON, Miss. (WTOK) - Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced two new executive orders Tuesday to delay public school reopenings in target counties and establish a statewide mask mandate in the ongoing fight against this unprecedented pandemic.

“Here’s the bottom line: we have to balance the very real risk of the virus and the lifelong damage of school closures. To do that, we have to safely provide education for the greatest possible number of children,” said Reeves. “The best way to accomplish that is to provide guidelines, allow local school leaders to tailor them, and step in with the authority of state government where it is absolutely necessary. That is what we’re doing today. This is the beginning of that effort, not the end.”

Working closely with officials in the Mississippi Department of Education and the Mississippi State Department of Health, Reeves is directing school districts in counties with higher risk of community transmission and recent spikes in new cases to delay the start of the 2020-2021 academic year. Under
Executive Order No. 1517, school districts in the following counties must delay their reopening for grades 7-12 until Monday, August 17: Bolivar, Coahoma, Forrest, George, Hinds, Panola, Sunflower, and Washington counties.

The new executive order includes a statewide mask mandate for schools, instructing all Mississippians to wear a mask when inside a school building or classroom, or outside on a school campus when social distancing is not possible.

The 19 million is up. The US will soon be at 5,000,000.

That's 26% of global cases with just over 4% of the world's population.

    So much winning!

Another god bothering bozo. They should have given him three years.

YANGON: A Canadian preacher who claimed Christians were safe from the coronavirus was on Thursday jailed for three months after he and dozens of his followers became infected when he held a banned service.

Myanmar has so far weathered the pandemic well with just 357 confirmed cases and six deaths, although the low numbers tested make many fear the true figures are far higher.

Toronto-based David Lah, 43, was born in Myanmar and often returns to his motherland to preach.

The country imposed a ban on gatherings in mid-March, but footage emerged in early April of Lah holding a service in Rangoon.

"If people hold the Bible and Jesus in their hearts, the disease will not come in," he proclaimed in one video to a roomful of faithful.

"The only person who can cure and give peace in this pandemic is Jesus."

Lah tested positive for coronavirus shortly afterwards, and dozens of confirmed cases were traced back to his followers.

The preacher was arrested after recovering from the illness in May and faced up to three years in jail for violating the Natural Disaster and Management Law.

On Thursday, however, a Rangoon court chose to be lenient.

Lah and his colleague Wai Tun had been sentenced to three months imprisonment, Lah's lawyer Aung Kyi Win told reporters outside the court, adding that time already served would be deducted.

A waiting crowd of the preacher's followers erupted into cheers and celebrations at the news.

The scandal even touched Myanmar's Christian vice-president Henry Van Thio and his family, who had attended an earlier service with Lah in February, although they later tested negative.

About 6% of Buddhist-majority Myanmar's population identifies as one of the various Christian denominations in the country.

Yup, here we all are, in the middle of a world-wide pandemic that is causing a response that can be characterized as borderline panic. Here on TD we are appalled at good ole America – world leader in infections and deaths. Of course, it’s all Trumps fault.

Yet, we see you tube videos of partying, wanton disregard of safety protocols, face masks, social distancing – FFS we even have reports of Covid parties, see who gets infected first.

Mayor in Lake of the Ozarks credits viral videos of crowded parties for tourism uptick
NBC News: ELISHA FIELDSTADT Aug 5th 2020

Viral videos of jam-packed gatherings at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri tend to prompt criticism, but a local mayor is happy for any sort of coverage, crediting the attention for a spike in tourism this year.

Shady Gators, a lakefront bar, was called out on social media after videos from a Saturday EDM party showed crowds of people practically on top of each other and not wearing masks.

According to the venue, a performer scheduled for Saturday had cancelled, but Shady Gators put together a new lineup, giving people the option of getting a refund or attending the alternate event.

"There are absolutely no restrictions or mandates per the Missouri Governor that impact our venue in any fashion. Despite there being no capacity restrictions, we are still only operating at 50% capacity for this event to allow for social distancing. This is an entirely outdoor venue," said a Facebook post from Shady Gators. Temperatures would be checked, and hand sanitizer would be handed out, but masks were not required, even though they were "encouraged."

Shady Gators did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Parties and events are posted on the bar's calendar for weekends through Labor Day. On Thursday, a "Halloween in August" party is scheduled.

Similar videos of a crowded pool party over Memorial Day weekend prompted St. Louis County to issue a travel advisory and the Kansas City health director to call for self-quarantine of the revelers. The videos garnered national attention.

The mayor of Lake Ozark, a city within the Lake of the Ozarks region, said he's happy for the publicity because it's sent even more people to the area.

“So you just think about what this has done for our economy and you just go, ‘Thank you, folks,’” Mayor Gerry Murawski told local station FOX WDAF.
He said the lake has seen more visitors already this summer than the past two years combined.

Murawski said the national news coverage has doubled tourism. “And as the end of July, my numbers say we are already at 9.1 million,” he said. “I look at that and go, ‘Well, maybe we’ve done something right."

He said the Memorial Day crowds did have him concerned. “We were worried — we thought two weeks after that our counts are going to go up, but they didn’t at all,” Murawski said.

But St. Louis County Executive Sam Page said Monday that some of the 13,000 cases the county has seen can in fact be tied back to the lake.
“We did have some cases that were able to trace back to crowds, including events at the Lake of the Ozarks,” Page said during a news conference.

"That remains one of many opportunities in the community — whenever social distancing is relaxed, people aren’t wearing masks in large crowds — with the presence of COVID in our state, especially at this point in time, the likelihood of becoming positive increases dramatically," Page said.

He asked those who attended parties in the region over the weekend to self-quarantine "to protect their family, their coworkers and everyone else out in the community."

So, with the prevailing attitude concerning Covid in the USA, is there any wonder why they are leading the world in confirmed and fatalities?

America, get all the Trumpanzees to wear a mask by making mask wearing a right under the constitution, forming a National Mask Association and then telling everyone "They're trying to take your masks away".

What's the UK doing right, and is it working?

According to worldometers, the UK leads all major countries in tests per million, with 25% of the population tested.

Not that I trust those numbers, or any ftm nowadays, but with lockdowns far from over perhaps the UK has finally realised that without mass testing you won't catch the infected and cannot begin to estimate the number of unidentified infections.

And at end of day when more accurate data begin to trickle through, it will be interesting to note how many of the infected were of those that actively rejected precautions like gels, washing hands, masks and social distancing, preferring to protest for their rights to remain stupid; and how many they in turn may have infected.

I never understood the importance of mass testing, those tested today may be infected tomorrow so selective testing seems more appropriate to me.

Strictly speaking a little off-topic but an interesting article nevertheless and this bit caught my attention:

Pandemics and plagues have a way of shifting the course of history, and not always in a manner immediately evident to the survivors. In the 14th century the Black Death killed close to half of Europe’s population. A scarcity of labor led to increased wages. Rising expectations culminated in the Peasants Revolt of 1381, an inflection point that marked the beginning of the end of the feudal order that had dominated medieval Europe for a thousand years.

The COVID pandemic will be remembered as such a moment in history, a seminal event whose significance will unfold only in the wake of the crisis. It will mark this era much as the 1914 assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the stock market crash of 1929, and the 1933 ascent of Adolf Hitler became fundamental benchmarks of the last century, all harbingers of greater and more consequential outcomes.
