The Jolt: The CDC to be eliminated as a first recipient of local coronavirus data

On Monday, Gov. Brian Kemp extended an emergency order allowing the continued deployment of up to 1,000 National Guard troops to protect state buildings in Atlanta -- ensuring continued tensions with Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms over public safety and public health.

But the White House is suggesting yet another role for the National Guard. From the Washington Post:

The Trump administration is poised to ask governors to consider sending in the National Guard to hospitals to help improve data collection about novel coronavirus patients, supplies and capacity, according to draft letters, internal emails and officials familiar with the plans…

[E]ven the possibility of National Guard involvement has infuriated hospital industry leaders, who say any data collection problems lie primarily with the Department of Health and Human Services and repeatedly changing federal instructions.

At issue is the timely collection and collation of coronavirus statistics, essential to identifying current and future hot spots. Which makes this paragraph deep in the Post article even more disturbing:

HHS officials on Monday finalized a new data reporting protocol for hospitals, which will eliminate the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a data recipient, leaving health-care institutions to report information about covid-19 to a federal contractor or to their state, which would coordinate the federal reporting. Covid-19 is the disease caused by the virus.

^ Trump said the CDC and doctors were lying. This way he can have the stats adjusted to fit his agenda.

News being reported today in the USA is that herd immunity is not something to be counted on based on the research. After 3 months post Covid19, only 17 % of subjects had immunity. Looks like I should pass on the coronavirus party tonight . . .

It's such obviously transparent bullshit. They just want to cut the CDC out of the loop so they can massage the figures.

Republicans: They don't care who they kill.

In a letter to the nation’s governors that says the National Guard could help improve hospitals’ data flow, HHS Secretary Alex Azar and Deborah Birx, the White House’s Coronavirus Task Force response coordinator, say they ordered the changes because some hospitals have failed to report the information daily or completely. That portrayal, and the involvement of the National Guard, have infuriated hospital industry leaders, who say any data collection problems lie primarily with HHS and repeatedly shifting federal instructions.

    Possibly good news.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Moderna Inc’s (MRNA.O) experimental vaccine for COVID-19 showed it was safe and provoked immune responses in all 45 healthy volunteers in an ongoing early-stage study, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday.

It was elsewhere reported (cannot find it now, BBC somewhere) that of the past six human coronaviruses it was found that people could be re-infected within one year by four of them. The two others, SARS and MERS, seem to leave antibodies for longer, maybe a couple of years. The bottom line is that herd immunity can be counted out.

This thing will be with us for a while yet.

The U.S. coronavirus count, which stands at 3,407,556 as of Tuesday afternoon, has increased by almost a quarter since June 30 when surging counts in California, Florida, Texas and Arizona pushed the daily counts to new highs.

    More potentially good news.

LONDON (Reuters) - Positive news on initial trials of the University of Oxford’s potential COVID-19 vaccine that has been licensed to AstraZeneca could be announced as soon as Thursday, ITV’s political editor Robert Peston said, citing a source.

The project has started Phase III of the human trials to assess how the vaccine works in a large number of people over the age of 18, but has yet to report Phase I trial results.

The developers of the vaccine earlier this month said they are encouraged by the immune response they have seen in trials so far.

“I am hearing there will be positive news soon (perhaps tomorrow) on initial trials of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine that is backed by AstraZeneca,” Peston said in a blog post on Wednesday.

Nice of them to stick 8 infected people on a plane with 112 others.

And I wonder what's going to happen to the one they took into custody?

The deputy director of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport says 9 Thai nationals, returning from Jordan and South Korea, have been diagnosed with “high fevers” and rushed to hospital. The first 8 were part of a group of 120 who touched down on a Royal Jordanian flight yesterday afternoon.

“Preliminary screenings found that 8 passengers had high fevers and were rushed to a hospital. The rest were transported to the government’s quarantine facilities for the mandatory 14 day quarantine, except 1 person who had an arrest warrant waiting for him, who was taken into official custody.”

So they were allowed on the flight without being tested, or all miraculously caught fever in the air.

    Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunt.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, who has championed “personal responsibility” over a mask mandate amid the coronavirus pandemic, announced on Wednesday he had tested positive for COVID-19.

    <snip>

Stitt’s announcement came as Oklahoma has seen its positive test results skyrocket in the wake of its full reopening in early June. On Wednesday, the state announced 1,075 new cases, the highest single-day increase since the first COVID-19 case appeared in Oklahoma in March, and the first time the state exceeded a caseload of 1,000.

Human trials of a potential Covid-19 vaccine being developed by scientists in Oxford are reported to have shown promising results.

The researchers believe they have made a breakthrough after discovering the jab could provide “double protection” against the virus, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The newspaper said the phase 1 trial in healthy adult volunteers, which began in April, showed the vaccine generated an immune response, with blood samples indicating it stimulated the body to produce both antibodies and “killer T-cells”.

It came as Health Secretary Matt Hancock said teams were working towards a “best case scenario” of a vaccine being made available some time this year, although he conceded it was more likely in 2021.

Chuck Woolery’s Twitter Account Disappears After His Son Apparently Comes Down With Coronavirus

    Tom Tapp
    July 16, 2020, 9:43 AM

Just days after his full-throated rejection of all things coronavirus was retweeted by President Donald Trump, former game show host Chuck Woolery’s Twitter account was no more.

It was unclear on Wedesday evening whether the disappearance was related to a widespread hack Twitter experienced earlier on Wednesday, or whether Twitter or Woolery himself removed the account.

On Sunday Woolery wrote, “The most outrageous lies are the ones about Covid 19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it.”
Trump retweeted the comment, which set off a firestorm and triggered questions from White House reporters as to whether Trump was attacking his own health officials’ assertions about the virus.

CBS News Catherine Herridge asked Trump, “You reposted a tweet yesterday saying that CDC and health officials are lying. You understand this is confusing for the public. So who do they believe? You, or the medical professionals like Dr. Fauci?”

“I didn’t make a comment,” Trump told Herridge. “I did. I reposted a tweet that a lot of people feel. But all I am doing is making a comment. I’m just putting somebody’s voice out there. There are many voices. There are many people that think we shouldn’t do this kind of testing, because all we do, it’s a trap.”

Late Monday, Woolery apparently shared a less combative message on Twitter saying, “To further clarify and add perspective, Covid-19 is real and it is here. My son tested positive for the virus, and I feel for of those suffering and especially for those who have lost loved ones.”

Snopes.com has verified Woolery’s Monday tweet, an archived version of which is available here.

It’s unclear whether his son’s condition, the reactions to his original tweet or something else prompted Woolery or Twitter to remove his account.
Deadline has reached out to Woolery and Twitter, but did not immediately hear back from either.

FFS. It's wankers like this that are going to make travel more difficult even when it opens up again.

Give the bastard a good beating!

DHAKA: A Bangladesh hospital owner accused of issuing thousands of fake negative coronavirus test results to patients at his two clinics was arrested Wednesday while trying to flee to India in a burqa, police said.

The arrest marked the end of a nine-day manhunt for Mohammad Shahed over allegations of giving fake certificates to patients saying they were virus-free without even testing them.

Shahed, 42, was one of more than a dozen people detained by authorities over the past few days in connection with the scam.

Experts warn the false documents has worsened the already dire virus situation in the country of 168 million people by casting doubt about the veracity of certificates issued by clinics.

"He was arrested from the bank of a border river as he was trying to flee to India. He was wearing a burqa," Rapid Action Battalion spokesman Colonel Ashique Billah told AFP.
