Australia slashes citizen returns by half as virus surge worsens

Sydney: Australia will slash the number of returning citizens allowed into the country by half as it struggles to contain an outbreak of coronavirus in its second-largest city, officials announced Friday.

From Monday, only 4,000 Australian citizens or permanent residents will be allowed back into the country each day, down from around 8,000 currently, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

The announcement came as officials in the state of Victoria reported a record 288 new COVID-19 cases mainly in the state capital, Melbourne.

Some five million residents of greater Melbourne were ordered into a six-week lockdown this week in an effort to curb the outbreak, which has rattled a nation that had successfully contained the epidemic in most areas weeks ago.

Health authorities said it would take several weeks to know if the Melbourne lockdown has succeeded in stemming the surge.

Australia closed its international borders to all but returning citizens and permanent residents in late March as coronavirus mounted.

All returning travellers have been put in mandatory hotel quarantine, stretching resources in the country's main cities.

Morrison said the cap on returning Australians would remain in place until the Melbourne epidemic is contained.

Health and security breaches in quarantine hotels in Melbourne have been blamed for sparking the outbreak there, and nationwide returning overseas travellers have accounted for the majority of COVID-19 cases in Australia.

The US is diving into a dark Covid hole -- and there's no plan to get out

As the US plunges into an ever deeper coronavirus morass, setting record new infection rates and the death curve begins to rise again, there's no prospect of the nightmare ending for months.

Delusion dominates an administration that perversely claims the United States is the world leader in beating this modern day plague. There are only contradictions, obfuscations and confusion from the federal officials who ought to be charting a national course.

The massive integrated testing and tracing effort that could highlight and isolate infection epicenters doesn't exist. Attempts to reopen schools in a few weeks are already descending into farce amid conflicting messages from Washington.

Amid all of this, the coronavirus task force does not hold daily briefings, and when it does, they are an exercise in dodging difficult questions and self-congratulation.

I guess those attempted murder charges can now be upgraded to murder.

A bus driver has died in France, five days after he was attacked by passengers who reportedly refused to wear face masks, his family says.
Philippe Monguillot, aged 59, had been left brain dead after the assault in the south-western city of Bayonne.
"We decided to let him go," his daughter Marie told AFP news agency, saying doctors had agreed.
Two men in their 20s were arrested and charged with attempted murder after the assault late on Sunday.
Two other men were charged with failing to help a person in danger while a fifth man was charged with attempting to hide a suspect.
Mr Monguillot was set upon after he reportedly asked three of the men to put on face masks and also tried to check another man's ticket.
Face masks are mandatory on public transport in France.
The mayor of Bayonne condemned the "barbaric act", local media report.
On Wednesday, thousands of people took part in a protest march in the city.
Regional bus services were severely disrupted as drivers refused to work following the incident.

Now the junior idiot is spouting barefaced lies.

At a coronavirus task force briefing Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence touted Florida data that he said showed the COVID-19 outbreak was waning in Florida and that the state was again flattening the curve.

“We’re actually seeing early indications of a percent of positive testing flattening in Arizona and Florida and Texas,” Pence said.

But Florida Department of Health data analyzed by the Miami Herald show the percentage of people testing positive each day is still trending upward in Florida. Other indicators are similarly troubling and contradict the White House’s hopeful message.

    Another stupid, dangerous Republican.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said during a TV interview Thursday that it’s unclear whether children can get and transmit COVID-19. That same day, Texas reported more than 550 COVID infections in children 9 and younger.
Cornyn’s comment comes as the Trump administration has pushed this week for schools to reopen in the fall, with the president going as far as to threaten to cut off federal funding for those that don’t. In Texas, officials have said schools must reopen in August, with few exceptions.

    Actually he was a minority:
A colleague of Mr Monguillot described him as a "decent and hardworking man who always looked after passengers."

    So where are the protesters?

How Long Will I Be Sick If I Catch Coronavirus? | Elemental

Covid-19 is known to take anywhere from two to 14 days before it triggers symptoms, with a median of four to five days, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Among those who die, the final outcome can come as quickly as two weeks after symptoms start, or up to eight weeks later. Add a possible 14-day incubation period, and the longest likely scenario, then, is 10 total weeks from the time of infection to a person’s death.

Are these new cases to be added to the ameristani, Chinese or Japanese overall numbers?

61 new cases confirmed at US bases in Okinawa

"The prefectural government of Okinawa, southern Japan, says it has received reports of 61 cases of coronavirus infection that have been confirmed among people connected to the US military.Thirty-eight were at the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station, and 23 at Camp Hansen.
Sixteen cases had been confirmed previously at those two facilities.

The Marine Corps wrote on its Facebook site on Saturday that two clusters of infections were detected this week.
It says it has limited traffic using the gates of those two bases to some military personnel.

Okinawa Governor Tamaki Denny said on Saturday he finds it disappointing that many new cases involving people with links to the US military have occurred in a short period of time while the prefecture as a whole has committed itself to prevention of infections.

He also said he has strong doubts about the efficacy of the US military's preventive measures.
The prefectural government also announced on Saturday that it has confirmed two new coronavirus cases in the prefecture.

It says the man in his teens and another in his 20s, both from Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo, were visiting Okinawa. Another member of the group tour in his 30s from Saitama tested positive the previous day. They have been staying in Okinawa since Thursday.

Other members of the group tested negative.

The two tourists have been hospitalized despite having no symptoms.
Okinawa has confirmed new coronavirus cases for four consecutive days. The prefectural tally is now 148."
