Looks like Mr. Shithole has been abandoned by his best buddy Vlad.

    Oh the shame.

Hong Kong (CNN)Russian President Vladimir Putin once called Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader, a "lone warrior."

Putin was joking, but that description is starting to look more and more accurate. Russia has joined about 100 countries in backing a resolution at the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA), calling for an independent inquiry into the coronavirus pandemic.

The European Union-drafted resolution comes on the back of a
push by Australia for an inquiry into China's initial handling of the crisis.

    That was met with an
angry response from Beijing, which accused Canberra of a "highly irresponsible" move that could "disrupt international cooperation in fighting the pandemic and goes against people's shared aspiration."

While the resolution to be presented at the annual meeting of World Health Organization (WHO) members, which begins on Monday in Geneva, does not single out China or any other country, it calls for an "impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation" of "the (WHO)-coordinated international health response to Covid-19."

The wording of the resolution is weak compared to Australia's previous calls for a probe into China's role and responsibility in the origin of the pandemic. This may have been necessary to get a majority of WHO member states to sign on -- particularly those, such as Russia, with traditionally strong ties to Beijing.

But that doesn't mean China's government should rest easy. The potential for an independent probe, even one not initially tasked with investigating an individual country's response, to turn up damning or embarrassing information is great. Australian government sources
told the ABC, the country's public broadcaster, that the resolution's language was sufficiently strong to "ensure that a proper and thorough investigation took place."

Beijing has previously said it would only support an investigation held by the WHO,
which has been accused of being overly influenced by China -- a charge top WHO officials refute.

    Speaking last week
, China's ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming said: "We're open, we are transparent, we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear. We welcome an international, independent review, but it has to be organized by the WHO."

With more countries signing on to the EU resolution as the assembly nears, that may be out of China's hands. There were also indications that Beijing may accept the resolution: Chinese state media
reported Monday that Xi would deliver a speech at the opening ceremony of the WHA, an unlikely move if Beijing was preparing to push back against a key agenda item.

Some 108 million people in China’s northeast region are being plunged back under lockdown conditions as a new and growing cluster of infections causes a backslide in the nation’s return to normal.

In an abrupt reversal of the re-opening taking place across the nation, cities in Jilin province have cut off trains and buses, shut schools and quarantined tens of thousands of people. The strict measures have dismayed many residents who had thought the worst of the nation’s epidemic was over.

145 children in NYC have multisystem inflammatory syndrome

11:36 am ET — New York City health officials confirmed 145 cases of what was previously referred to as pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, Mayor Bill de Blasio said during his daily news briefing.

Of 145 patients, 67 tested positive for Covid-19 or have the antibodies against the virus.

De Blasio said that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave the rare and potentially fatal illness an official definition, which is multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children.

The CDC also confirmed the link between the Kawasaki-like disease and Covid-19, and expanded the list of symptoms to persistent fever, irritability or sluggishness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, rash, conjunctivitis, enlarged lymph node on one side of the neck, red cracked lips, or red tongue and swollen hands and feet. —Jasmine Kim

One-third of small businesses won’t reopen after the pandemic, Facebook survey finds

Businesses stand temporarily closed in the French Quarter neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S., on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

1:13 pm ET — Of the small and medium-sized businesses that have been forced to close up shop during the coronavirus pandemic, about a third believe they won’t reopen after the initial crisis passes, according to a new report.

The finding comes is from a Facebook survey of 86,000 small and medium-sized business owners, managers and employees. The survey is part of an ongoing data initiative between Facebook and the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The survey also found that less than half of the business owners who have closed shop believe they will rehire the same workers they had to let go. The findings indicate the path to recovery could extend even further than imagined beyond the date when businesses are allowed to reopen. —Lauren Feiner

These malarial prophylactics are notorious for their unintended consequences and side effects. Mefloquine had a reputation for inducing psychosis but even th latest generation such as Malarone is not without problems - I was up in northern Laos and was advised to take the latter but after a week or so I felt so unwell at times and gave it up. Mind you I was drinking a splendid amount of Beer Lao too so perhaps there was an element of contraindication there.

^ When I was working in West Africa over the past few years Malarone was the prophylactic of choice. It was supposed to be taken for the duration of the work trip but it made people feel so ill that most took it just to cover crew changes. I suffered headaches, fatigue, aching muscles, stomach ache, itching, rashes...

The worst I have ever taken was Larium back in the 90s. With hindsight I think it really screwed my head for a couple of years

    Moderna... Good!

A vaccine by Moderna and the NIAID has been found to generate an immune response in a small Phase 1 trial. Eight participants who received low- and medium-sized doses of the vaccine all developed neutralizing antibodies which were found to prevent viral replication of SARS-CoV-2 in a laboratory setting.

I felt as if I was on the verge of a bout of the 'flu or simply too tired to go anywhere beyond the confines of my air-conned room. I realised it was the Malarone and quit it immediately, after which I was much restored. In the end malaria is a numbers game, the more you restrict bites at dusk and dawn the better you will be. Wear long sleeved shirts, long trousers and slap the DEET on, particularly during the feeding times of the anopheles mossy, and you will be fine.

@bettyboo - that reminds me of this Spitting Image - royals move into a council flat.

I've discovered Spitting Image during this lockdown - what a hoot! I think it started with someone posting a Spitting Image clip about Randy Andy.

There's news/ rumors that there will be a new Spitting Image series. They already have puppets for Will & Kate, Harry & Meghan, and Trump. Looking forward to it!

OK... Back to the covid thread.

@ant - I'm looking forward to it. There's loads going on these days that could be used for Spitting Image material. Also, I've watched seasons 1-3 of The Crown, so I know more about the royals now than I did a year ago (well, the HBO version of their story).

Question: are they really a family of alien lizards? Lol.

Not really important... back to the Covid thread!

An interesting read: COVID Underdogs: Mongolia - Indi Samarajiva - Medium

Mongolia has had the best COVID-19 response in the world. Not only do they have zero deaths, they have zero local transmissions. Mongolia didn’t flatten the curve or crush the curve — they just like ‘fuck curves’. In Mongolia, there simply wasn't an epidemic at all.
And no, they didn’t just get lucky.
Starting in January, Mongolia executed a perfect public health response, and they have never let up the pressure since. COVID-19 did not just leave Mongolia alone. Mongolia showed it the door.
For this all this hard work, however, they get little credit. Nobody’s talking about the ‘Mongolian example’. Instead, we talk about total failures like Germany or Sweden. Like I’ve said, success is ZERO, and Mongolia is as zero as you can get.

Republicans eh? They don't care who they kill, and they'll lie if they have to.

ALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS12) — As Florida starts to reopen, the architect and manager of Florida's COVID-19 dashboard, announced she'd been removed from her position, Florida Today reported.
Rebekah Jones said in an email to CBS12 News that her removal was "not voluntary" and that she was removed from her position because she was ordered to censor some data, but refused to "manually change data to drum up support for the plan to reopen."

Jones made the announcement May 5 in a farewell email to researchers and other members of the public who had signed up to receive updates on the data portal, according to Florida Today. She said that for "reasons beyond my division's control," her office is no longer managing the dashboard, involved in its publication, fixing errors or answering any questions.

Fun Fact: 12% of Australians are official retarded.

When it comes to believing stupid conspiracy theories related to coronavirus, young Australians are the most susceptible, or at least that's what they're telling pollsters.

According to a poll [PDF] conducted by Essential Research, one-fifth of all 18 to 34-year olds said they had some belief that Bill Gates was involved in the creation and spread of coronavirus, with the same number responding positive to the question: "The 5G wireless network is being used to spread the COVID-19 virus".

These numbers decreased with age, with 13% of 35 to 54-year olds responding positively to the theories, and only 4% and 8% of the 55+ cohort, respectively, subscribed to the 5G nutbaggery and Gates idiocy.

Broken down by gender, 15% of the 524 male respondents said they believed in the 5G conspiracy, compared to 9% of the 549 female respondents, while the gender split was 14% and 13%, respectively, on the Gates theory.

In total, the poll indicated that just under one in eight respondents, 12%, believed 5G has been used in the
coronavirus pandemic, while 13% subscribed to Microsoft founder Bill Gates playing "a role in the creation and spread of COVID-19".
