"Our current assessment of the evidence: COVID-19 is almost exclusively spread via droplets. When there is risk of droplet aerosolization, such as with certain medical procedures, spread can be airborne.

But the evidence shows that COVID-19 is primarily spread via droplet, with clear protection offered by distance, physical barriers to hands and face, and hand hygiene."

Column: Going maskless in stores is the new smoking in restaurants

The prohibition on smoking in restaurants is an infringement on personal freedom, the freedom to light up after or even during a nice meal to add to the enjoyment of the dining experience.

That sounds absurd, right? The idea that fouling the communal air and putting others at risk with secondhand toxins from cigarettes is a right clangs on the ear.

It didn’t always. In fact, before and even shortly after Jan. 1, 2008, when the Smoke-Free Illinois Act banning smoking in public places and places of employment took effect, smokers and their allies were bellyaching loudly about how the health wimps were violating their traditional prerogatives, and if they didn’t like it they should simply stay away from places where smokers gather.

The ban was a law, yes. But it quickly became a social norm here and in the majority of states and big cities where similar bans are in effect. Bars and restaurants don’t have to hire additional security to oust those who dare smoke, and police don’t have to come in and threaten violators with arrest. Enforcement comes from social pressure — the hairy eyeball, portentous fake cough and occasional scolding remark from other customers, and the gentle reminders from employees. Conformity became not about politics but about health and common decency.

I can’t remember the last time I saw someone smoking in a restaurant, and the sight today would shock and offend me.

We really need to get to that point soon with masks and face coverings.

Entering a store or other potentially crowded indoor space with a bare face needs to become seen as socially transgressive, not just a violation of the law. Not wearing a mask in such situations needs to become widely seen for what it is — a reckless, almost unthinkable act that expresses indifference to your own health and the health of others.

And wearing a mask needs to become widely seen as membership in the class of warriors doing battle against the threat of the coronavirus.

But we’re not there yet. Perhaps you’ve seen the news stories. Protesters are trying to gin up a boycott of Costco and Whole Foods over their mask requirements, and a security guard at a Family Dollar store in Flint, Michigan, was shot and killed May 1 in an altercation after he blocked the entry of a maskless customer.

The Illinois Retail Merchants Association has reported a raft of recent mask-related confrontations in stores, including a police officer in Peoria who told a grocery manager he was “making a political protest” by not covering his face in defiance of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s order, and an irate customer in Romeoville who threatened to go to his car and get his gun to shoot an employee who tried to enforce the mask order and a customer.

How can this be when it’s virtually the unanimous opinion of public health experts that masks will limit the spread of COVID-19 and hasten the reopening of our battered economy? How can this behavior not have become normative given that President Donald Trump has endorsed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation that Americans wear face coverings in situations when it’s not possible to maintain a 6-foot distance from others?

Because Trump has failed to lead by example. Because over and over when he’s photographed in situations where the CDC recommendation would apply, he is unmasked. This subliminally tells his slavish supporters that the coronavirus threat is overblown and that covering your face with a mask is a sign of weakness and capitulation to fear.

“Trump has told advisers that he believes wearing one would ‘send the wrong message,’” according to an Associated Press report Thursday. “The president said doing so would make it seem like he is preoccupied with health instead of focused on reopening the nation’s economy. … (He) has also told confidants that he fears he would look ridiculous in a mask and the image would appear in negative ads."

This convergence of vanity, political ineptitude and ignorance is very on brand for Trump.

If he were to start wearing masks in public, his supporters now churlishly protesting their lack of overall freedom under various shutdown orders might finally realize that going without a facial covering in public is as rude, thoughtless and unacceptable as smoking around people who are trying to eat. And it also delays realizing the very goal that most animates him.

To put it in terms he and the gun-toting protesters might relate to, a mask isn’t a white flag, it’s a weapon.

It makes sense when you read it. He's simply pointing out how attitudes change.

I used to smoke in restaurants too, and I still do in smoking areas.

The good thing about warm climates is outside seating.

Boris Johnson has used social media to update the public on six new rules ahead of his Sunday evening speech during which he will set out the "roadmap" out of lockdown.

The Prime Minister included the Government's new slogan "stay alert, control the virus, save lives" which has generated criticism after claims it was too ambiguous.

The PM tweeted his new advice, saying that people should "stay at home as much as possible", keep two metres apart when outside and "limit contact with other people" as the
    coronavirus lockdown continues.

The advice from the Prime Minister:

-Stay at home as much as possible

-Work from home if you can
    -Limit contact with other people
-Keep your distance if you go out (2 metres apart where possible)
    -Wash your hands regularly
-If you or anyone in your household has symptoms, you all need to self-isolate

We might be enjoying cleaner air but the shit we've thrown or washed out to sea is still turning up.

'I found 300 Lego flippers on the beach'

    https://www.boredpanda.com/lockdown-beach-microplastic-sorting-finds-rob-arnold/

While you’re all bored, locked up in quarantine, thinking of what to put your hands on next, one guy has it all sorted. I mean, literally. Rob Arnold has sorted out 250 kg of washed plastic litter and put it all out to dry.

“Put the first 3 weeks of lockdown to good use, sorting microplastics at home,” wrote Rob in his Facebook post, which has been shared more than 6K times. But Rob is no rookie when it comes to cleaning beaches. He’s been raising awareness on marine plastic pollution with art objects, sculptures, and compositions all made from the sorted plastic. But littered shores are full of surprises, and some of his findings are incredible!

Bored Panda has written about Rob previously, when he collected 35 bags of microplastics on the Tregantle beach and turned it into art. Check it out right here.

Rob Arnold collected washed plastic litter from a beach in Cornwall and put it out to dry while in quarantine

Bored Panda contacted Rob for an interview to find out more about his plastic-sorting hobby. It turns out, 7 years ago, Rob saw the film “Message in the Gyre,” which inspired him to use his time in retirement and make a difference. “It graphically shows the plight of the albatrosses in the Pacific ocean, feeding plastic to their young having mistaken it for food, with tragic results.” And it was a turning point for Rob.

“I’ve been doing cleans ever since and use my artworks, created with the litter, to campaign and try to reduce the plastic entering the ocean in the first place,” he says. The method of sorting the plastic came out of Rob’s desire to create a sculpture of an Easter Island statue. “I realized that it would require me collecting large quantities of plastic fragments so I designed a sifting apparatus to help me do it.”

Be careful out there, it seems some dementia symptoms can be misconstrued for COVID lockdown issues, i am officially worried i have early dementia signs.

    From the Beeb.

According to the NHS, many people with frontotemporal dementia develop a number of unusual behaviours they're not aware of.

One warning sign is a change in food preferences.

This is often characterised by a sudden sudden liking of sweet foods, and poor table manners, explains the NHS.

    Other behavioural symptoms include:

    Being insensitive or rude
    Acting impulsively or rashly
    Loss of inhibitions
    Seeming subdued
Losing interest in people and things
    Losing drive and motivation
Inability to empathise with others, seeming cold and selfish
Repetitive behaviours, such as humming, hand-rubbing and foot-tapping, or routines such as walking exactly the same route repetitively
Compulsive eating, alcohol drinking and/or smoking
    Neglecting personal hygiene

Nev, perhaps but its highly contagious enough to change the R values in days - that is the problem that countries trying to relax measures are finding. You can't take a country wide approach, it has to be more localised and that requires a much more stringent and faster testing regime.

Ain't life grand and so easy when you are in the wings, a fucking slimey lawyer to boot - God i loath them. Now the unions are on board with them exercising their power over the workforce - its going to be full on 70s again.

Starmer: PM's statement 'lacks clarity and consensus'

The leader of the Labour Party in the UK, Sir Keir Starmer, says the prime minister’s statement lacked “clarity and consensus”.

He told the BBC: “This statement raises as many questions as it answers. We see the prospect of England, Scotland and Wales pulling in different directions, so there's a big gap here for the government to make up.”

Sir Keir says Boris Johnson appeared to be “rushing into tomorrow”, telling millions of people to go back to work “without a clear plan for safety” or “clear guidance as to how to get there without using public transport”.

He says that if he were PM, he would have “tried to build a consensus” and would have made sure - if possible - that the devolved administrations, trade unions, and community groups were “on board” and knew “exactly what was required of them.”

The Labour leader adds: “I accept a plan had to be set out, but to lack that basic clarity and consensus is a real problem.”

^ The Cvnt Starmer hasn't mentioned that Jimmy Crankie has been attending COBRA meetings and promptly fuking off to deliver nation state addresses to the skirt wearers, some consensus - of course if the lawyer were in charge it would be plain sailing.
