    Wrong.

I stood on a line to get into a bank last week and they insisted I wore a mask and practised social distancing.

My new mask will be transparent.

To be fair, the countries do respect social distancing...

With rigorous enforcement that'd make the Australian police jealous...

Have you started early on the booze today?
Are you a total fucking idiot or is it just a part-time hobby that's taken over?

The primary vector of the disease was fucking Chinese people from Wuhan and environs from where numerous tour groups travelled to Thailand particularly in January preparatory to the CNY. The same vector travelled to Italy and Singapore in addition to numerous EU people engaged in business in China, Singapore and Thailand.

There have been in the intervening three months over 60,000 deaths in fucking Europe whereas here in Thailand there has been only a few hundred at most indicating a very low level of infection, a phenomenon totally at odds with the experience of Europe, and of course the US.

Testting is a fucking irrelevance in this context not least because if it was merely a matter of poor reporting then I think most folk would have noticed the fucking bodies stacking up at the fucking temple crematoria, you fucking dull-brained moron.

    But there are none.

That is one fucking huge anomaly.

The pandemic is interesting and the variations stark to a degree that defeats analysis unless one accepts the proposition that latitude is a factor which when coupled with viral loading determines the efficiency of transmission.

Up until 21 March the UK did nothing to address the virus. It has now over 12,000 deaths and 100,000 cases recorded since that date.

Thailand with a similar population and host to several million PRC chinks since Dec 2019, particularly from Hubei province, up until Feb 2020, has recorded 2,673 cases and 46 deaths.

This anomaly is not one that can be solely attributed to misreporting or some other socio-political intervention.

The cultural difference in wearing masks may contribute to variational differences but that alone cannot be the case given most are rudimentary and hygiene protocols are minimal.

Thailand did not adopt social distancing regimes and closure of public places until the third week of March so in terms of public awareness and social reactions to the pandemic it is pretty much in the same ballpark as the UK.

    So, how come?

Five of the biggest GDPs in the world (not including China) are now well ahead of China with cases, and, if these statistics are to be believed (???), then potentially might suffer more economically than China...

Could China come out of this better than the US, Germany, UK, France and Italy? Just something to ponder. If, and that's a big if, China does come out of this economically better than those countries (and others?) then what's the motivation for them to change what they're doing and clean up/stop their viruses to the world game?

Here's some support for the idea the the US and Europe suffer more than China:

China is a serious player, a massive economy, massive wealth within its own economy, global export markets which spread far further than the 'West'. The wealth of Chinese individuals and corporations invested around the world is huge; Australia, East Asia/S.E. Asia and much further afield.

Mr sausage's description of China is about 30 years out of date, things have changed. At the same time, China has problems with self-sufficiency, energy, natural disasters, changing it's economic practices and more, but don't be confused, China has a lot of very smart people and education generally is on the rise while in a lot of Europe/US education has been dropping down since the 80s.

Cut and pasting while to articles is interesting to folks who like to widen their knowledge, I read a lot of the full articles that folks link to and cut/paste from - some I agree with, some less, so. Other people's approach is to presume they know everything and just troll/rant - this is the discourse space of ejits...

why not? it doesn't take much to fuck up an entire data collection process

the main issue is most countries can't measure properly the number of infections, so all we get now is garbage data

China seems to have a lot of good data, but not sure what would happen in 18 months if that data might be suppressed for political reasons

China will be consumed by revolution, protests, economic collapse and conflict.

They're a medieval society that is merely describing an arc through its history and this current phase of communist diktat is but a milestone on its path towards the future.

One hopes the next contagion wipes out half of them if only to speed the process.

Fascism was the last global threat to be banished, chink communism is the next.

China concealed around 60,000 corpses, a not entirely insignificant factor in throwing out of kilter subsequent computer modelling by civilised countries facing the contagion.

The thing is, as Italy demonstrated quite vividly, who needs data collection to prove a fucking point if you have convoys of the dead being ferried out of towns at night for storage and burial elsewhere.

All he is saying is what scientists have been saying for months: That the virus is not man-made.

That doesn't mean some dumb chinky didn't spill it in said Lab and then go spreading it around the local market.

I'm amazed they didn't pin it on a "dirty farang".

PATTAYA: A major supermarket was closed on Wednesday evening for overnight disinfecting after it was learned a person infected with the coronavirus shopped there 10 days earlier, and customers there at the same time are advised to see a doctor if they develop respiratory problems or related symptoms.

The Foodland supermarket at Terminal 21 in Bang Lamung district, Pattaya, opened for business as normal from 10am on Thursday after it closed at 6pm on Wednesday for cleaning and spraying of disinfectant.

Officials said the infected person, a Thai tourist, spent 10-20 minutes inside Foodland supermarket in the shopping mall on April 5.

On Wednesday, Chon Buri provincial authorities issued an announcement warning people who went to the supermarket on April 5 between 5.30pm and 6pm to self-isolate if they develop respiratory problems, have a cough, runny nose, sore throat or feel exhausted.

They were advised to put on face masks and immediately see a doctor.

Customers were also asked to inform health personnel if they were in the shop at the same time the infected person was there.

After the announcement, the supermarket was temporarily closed to allow health officials from Bang Lamung district office to disinfect the premises.

    After COVID-19, a Mental Health Epidemic ?

n an article posted online April 13, 2020 in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, a trio of researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine suggest that in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus pandemic, a host of neuropsychiatric challenges may remain -- or emerge -- for those recovering from COVID-19 infections.

"Past pandemics have demonstrated that diverse types of neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as encephalopathy, mood changes, psychosis, neuromuscular dysfunction or demyelinating processes, may accompany acute viral infection, or may follow infection by weeks, months, or longer in recovered patients," the authors warn.

"Our article seeks to bring the medical community's attention to the need for monitoring and investigations to mitigate such outcomes, not to cause panic among individuals whose lives are already greatly affected by this pandemic."

Encephalopathy is a broad term for any insult that alters brain function or structure, and therefore one's mental status. Demyelination is loss of the protective myelin sheathing of nerve cells, resulting in neurological problems.

"COVID-19 is a significant psychological stressor, both for individuals and communities," said senior author Suzi Hong, PhD, associate professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Family Medicine and Public Health at UC San Diego School of Medicine. "There are fears of illness, death and uncertainty of the future. This pandemic is a potential source of direct and vicarious traumatization for everyone."

But less attention, wrote Hong and co-authors Emily Troyer, MD, and Jordan Kohn, PhD, has been focused on the impact the virus itself may have on the human central nervous system (CNS) and related neuropsychiatric outcomes. The authors noted that studies of past respiratory viral pandemics indicate diverse types of neuropsychiatric symptoms can arise, including increased incidence of insomnia, anxiety, depression, mania, suicidality, and delirium, which followed influenza pandemics in the 18th and 19th centuries.

"Encephalitis lethargica is an inflammatory disorder of the CNS marked by hypersomnolence (abnormal sleepiness), psychosis, catatonia, and Parkinsonism. Incidence increased around the time of the 1918 pandemic," said the authors.

During more recent viral outbreaks, such as SARS-CoV-1 in 2003, H1N1 in 2009, and MERS-CoV in 2012, there were subsequent reports of higher rates of narcolepsy, seizures, encephalitis (brain inflammation), Guillain-Barre syndrome and other neuromuscular and demyelinating conditions.

"Reports are already surfacing of acute CNS-associated symptoms in individuals affected by COVID-19," said Hong, including greater stroke incidence in severely infected patients in Wuhan, China, along with delirium and loss of smell and taste senses. (A survey of UC San Diego Health patients treated for COVID-19, published April 12, 2020 issue of International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology, described the first empirical findings strongly associating sensory loss with COVID-19. The loss was temporary, said the authors, with taste and smell returning within two to four weeks of infection.)

Hong, Troyer and Kohn say the neuropsychiatric consequences of the current novel coronavirus pandemic are not yet known, but likely will be significant and last for years. They said emerging evidence suggests the biomedical community should begin monitoring for symptoms of neuropsychiatric conditions and the neuroimmune status of persons exposed to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

"We will need to do this at different points in their lives, for years to come, to fully appreciate this pandemic's effects on neuropsychiatric outcomes for differing age groups, and how to better prepare for pandemics to come," Hong said.

Even so, the numbers being reported are not facts, in some cases not even close, so when the data is finally gathered and churned by dozens of agencies using different samples, conflicting conclusions will be the best we could manage.
