possibly, but I think if you smoke or vape you are at higher risk as well.
I had pneumonia less than 2 years ago in China at that, so I am super freaked out. lol

@toot - probably bcos it's a respiratory disease, and usually more men smoke than women. That was the case in China - many men smoke (young & elderly), and it hit elderly men more than the women. Smoking, plus the poor air quality in China were contributing factors (as well as the liking for exotic animals like bats, pangolins & snakes).

@betty - I've watched an interview (I think with an epidemiologist some weeks ago) that in Italy, high deaths were due to an elderly population. In the US, obesity will be the risk factor, bcos obese ppl sometimes have underlying conditions like heart disease & diabetes.

If you'll look at the pastor who died of covid a few posts back, his whole family is overweight /obese.

    ++++

I'm worried for a long time friend, living in New Jersey, USA. I chatted with him today and he fears he may have the virus, as he has some symptoms. He's in his early 40s but is immunocompromised. I hope he gets tested soon & that he's negative.

I hope your friend turns out ok.

Don't the lungs usually recover well if you get over pneumonia? Hopefully, that isn't a pre-existing condition in your case.

    Stupid fucking privileged bitch ...

Scotland's chief medical officer has resigned after making two trips to her second home during the coronavirus lockdown.

Dr Catherine Calderwood had apologised for her actions, and initially said she planned to continue in the role.

Dr Calderwood had earlier been given a police warning for breaking the lockdown rules after the Scottish Sun published photographs taken on Saturday of her and her family visiting Earlsferry in Fife - more than an hour's drive from her main family home in Edinburgh.

The chief medical officer had fronted TV and radio adverts urging the public to stay at home to save lives and protect the NHS, and took part in daily televised media briefings alongside Ms Sturgeon.

Official Counts Understate the U.S. Coronavirus Death Toll - The New York Times

WASHINGTON — A coroner in Indiana wanted to know if the coronavirus had killed a man in early March, but said that her health department denied a test. Paramedics in New York City say that many patients who died at home were never tested for the coronavirus, even if they showed telltale signs of infection.

In Virginia, a funeral director prepared the remains of three people after health workers cautioned her that they each had tested positive for the coronavirus. But only one of the three had the virus noted on the death certificate.

Across the United States, even as coronavirus deaths are being recorded in terrifying numbers — many hundreds each day — the true death toll is likely much higher.

More than 9,400 people with the coronavirus have been reported to have died in this country as of this weekend, but hospital officials, doctors, public health experts and medical examiners say that official counts have failed to capture the true number of Americans dying in this pandemic. The undercount is a result of inconsistent protocols, limited resources and a patchwork of decision making from one state or county to the next.

Tenth Russian II-76 with anti-coronavirus assistance departs for Serbia — ministry

    MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/.

"The tenth Il-76 of the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces with military specialists and medical equipment on board has departed for Serbia from the Chkalovsky aerodrome, the Russian Defense Ministry told reporters on Saturday.
"The tenth Il-76 plane of the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces' military-transport aviation has departed from the Chkalovsky aerodrome (Moscow region) to the Republic of Serbia to provide assistance in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus," the ministry said.

Three other Il-76 planes have also departed from the Chkalovsky aerodrome for Serbia earlier on Saturday. Russian Il-76 planes will land at the Batajnica aerodrome in 20 km to the north-west of Serbian capital Belgrade.

Russia started to deliver aid to Serbia from April 3 on the instruction from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic held telephone talks with President Putin on April 2. The Kremlin press office reported after the talks that Russia would provide humanitarian assistance to Serbia and send doctors and disinfection specialists to the Balkan country.
In all, it is planned to send 11 planes that will deliver 87 military medics (eight nursing teams), virologists of the radiation, chemical and biological defense troops, special medical equipment, protective gear, and 16 units of military hardware.

As of 3:00pm local time (4:00pm Moscow time) on April 3, the number of coronavirus cases in Serbia grew to 1,476 while the virus death toll climbed to 39 people."

Russia's Coronavirus Numbers Spike By Nearly 1,000 in Record One-Day Jump

Russia confirmed 954 new coronavirus infections on Monday, bringing the country’s official number of cases up to 6,343 and marking a new record one-day increase in infections.

Forty-seven people have been killed by the virus.

Russia’s officially reported numbers — which are still smaller than those in European countries — have sparked suspicion. Experts warn that Russia's testing capacity is hampered by bureaucracy, while officials warn that the real number of cases is likely much higher.

Most of Russia's cases are in Moscow. Since March 30, all of Moscow's 12 million residents have been ordered to stay in their homes with few exceptions.

Worldwide, the virus has infected over 1 million people.

    Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19)

Interesting in that in addition to the "confirmed cases" 2,220 to date, and the "deaths" 26 to date, they have an additional category "PUI" (patients under investigation) which is 25,156

Unknown - but, as they have tagged them as "patient" I would assume these are waiting on Covid-19 test results.

In PI, our PUI means "person/s under investigation" - people who may have the disease, show some symptoms, and may have been tested but still waiting for results. (some are still on Q to be tested, bcos of lack of kits). The PUIs are asked to self isolate or they may have been confined in hospital, depending on their condition. Sometimes the person has died without knowing the result, bcos there's a long queue - lots of samples coming in, few labs to do them. Average is 7 days (I think), to get the results. Unless you're a politician or some other VIP.

We also have PUM or person under monitoring - usually asymptomatic people who have been in close contact with a positive case, or with a PUI.

The PI govt intends to do mass testing of PUIs by 14/ 15 April bcos that's when the locally produced kits (made by a university here) will be available. So we'll expect the numbers to rise.

Accdg to the news, the govt is thinking of extending the lockdown for 15 more days (it was supposed to end after Easter).

    +++++++

@betty & MM - thanks for the kind words. I do hope my friend gets well. He said he was in a bit of pain and his spirits seemed low. He said ppl in his community are getting ill. The way he described it, it was like the Dementors creeping into the neighborhood. People falling like flies. It's bad in NY, and New Jersey is following closely.

New Orleans will also be a hotspot (or it already is), due to the Mardi Gras some weeks ago. As is Florida and the spring breakers.

    Take care, everyone. Keep safe!
