Pattaya considers total lockdown - people can't leave or enter, possible fines if not wearing a mask outside

    Image: Manager

The Pattaya mayor is considering some of the most draconian Covid-19 regulations yet.

And the effect on foreigners and tourists staying in Pattaya looks set to be dramatic.

The proposed regulations include a complete lockdown of Pattaya, Manager reported. The move is subject to final government approval.

The strong-arm mayor's actions came as 25 people were confirmed to have coronavirus in Bang Lamung. Fourteen foreigners and 11 Thais have the virus making it the second worst affected district in Chonburi.

The latest case was a Russian who contacted the Land Department office. This seems to have been the final straw for the mayor.

Manager's article pointed the finger at foreigners for being largely responsible for spreading the virus.

Now no one faces being able to leave or enter from now on to prevent the spread.

They reported that any foreigners outside without a mask on could be fined 20,000 baht.

Everything like department stores, restaurants, pubs and clubs has already been shut down.

All main roads would be sealed off into and out of Pattaya. Only vital supplies would be allowed to get through and businessmen with legitimate reasons are being issued with permits.

Anyone trying to return home faces strict questioning.

Movement will be permitted on secondary roads within Pattaya.

All hotels still with foreigners in them have been ordered to provide lists within three days. All guests have been told to stay inside.

A strict curfew is in place overnight from 10 to 4am according to nationwide instructions

    Should be eradicated next week
I have to say, when this first kicked off, I was impressed that Thailand basically kicked all the Chinese out. Stopped all tour bus activity which basically emptied CB area. Then came the masks and stopping the westerners from being stupid. The Thais definitely took a bit of a proactive approach but not because of the PM's leadership but most of the individuals taking it upon themselves to take precautions and hospitals putting in pre screen controls.

My wife has said that they have no Covid cases in Lampang. Not sure how truthful that is but everything is very controlled and has been. I am glad I got out of CB before all the stay in place rules hit. I am enjoying working remote. Sip a nice drink on the calls with my feet up in shorts. .

I got an email from the US embassy telling me that if I am living abroad I need to exit back now or risk not being able to return. I laughed and thought to myself.... Hmmm 250K cases in the US versus 2k here. 6.6 million people now unemployed, I am still working. People assaulting others over Toilet Paper here I use an ass washer. I sent them a response and said, Thank you for the update and I will stay put.

As for opportunistic people, of course every country will have the fkrs that will exploit an opportunity to make money. Amazon nailed a few guys in the US who had hoarded then tried to mark everything way up. Also caught some guy in NY and they confiscated all his supplies and arrested him and he will get no money back so his plan totally back fired. They will be punished to max of the law which I think is appropriate.

Apropos the Pattaya clampdown, it seems each checkpoint has been delegated the right to decide on exceptions to the quarantine although no details of this policy have so far been disclosed.

Business leaders obviously, police and army, 'people with influence' and of course local government officials..............

Ohh boy here we go again. Can you please leave the advice from your daughter out.
Better concentrate on wearing a condom.

As my daughter has said to me over and over, Masks should really only be worn if you have signs of being ill or you are caring for an ill family member or work in the medical community. I see people panicking and spending copious amounts of money to get them and most use them improperly making them ineffective.
I will say that my wife has read that many foreigners in various parts of Thailand are being called out as they dismiss wearing a mask in public.

The six-hour curfew, which started on Friday night, is likely to be extended, even if it succeeds in stopping gatherings and lowering the coronavirus transmission rate.

"The period may increase to 8, 10, 12 or even more hours," Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Friday to clarify doubts over the night-time curfew intended to halt the spread of coronavirus.

All passenger flights have been banned from landing in the country to curb the outbreak of the new coronavirus, the aviation agency said on Friday.

The ban came into effect on Saturday morning and will run until the end of Monday, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand said in an order published late on Friday.

Anyone arriving on a flight that took off before the order came into effect will need to be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival in Thailand, the order said.

It came just hours after a commotion at Suvarnabhumi airport when more than 100 Thai nationals arrived on different flights on Friday, a Immigration Bureau officer told Reuters.

"A public health officer allowed them to quarantine themselves at home. There was a commotion because they said they weren't aware they had to be put in a state quarantine," the officer said.

PHUKET: Eight people — five Thais, two Myanmar men and one Chinese — have been arrested in Patong area of Phuket for breaching the curfew, which began on Friday night to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.

Police, led by Patong police chief Pol Col Akanit Danpitaksart, apprehended the eight offenders in tambon Patong of Kathu district on charges of failing to stay at home during the curfew — from 10pm to 4am.

The five Thais were Pariwat Nuankaew, 35, Ms Saranporn Chaicharung, 24, Ms Somkid Khwanngern, 36, Venus Phudphong, 36, and Wassana Sripadung, 39. The foreigners were Kyau Oo, 35, and Jaja, 21, from Myanmar, and Li Jiajun 24, from China.

All were taken to Patong police station for legal action.

    Asshole of the month !
I know a lot of people here also qualify. The good news is you don't have to be a TD member to get this price from HtG. You can be highly educated and still suck!
    Here we go:

Dr. Oxiris Barbot is the commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Barbot most recently served as the first deputy commissioner and oversaw development and implementation of agency priorities, including Take Care New York 2020 (#TCNY2020), the City’s data-driven health agenda focused on addressing the social determinants of health and engaging communities on the issues of health equity.
Dr. Barbot has over 25 years of experience in advancing health equity and providing healthcare in urban communities (thank God she's not in my community). She previously served as commissioner of health for Baltimore City, where she led the development of Healthy Baltimore 2015, a health policy program focused on improving health outcomes by focusing on areas where the largest impact could be made to raise the quality of life. Prior, Dr. Barbot served as medical director of the Office of School Health at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the NYC Department of Education. Before working in New York, Dr. Barbot was the chief of pediatrics and community medicine at Unity Health Care, Inc., a federally qualified health center in Washington, DC.

Dr. Barbot received a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and holds a medical degree..........O.K. let's cut the BS

“The important thing for New Yorkers to know is that in the city currently, their risk is low, and our city preparedness is high,” said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot on a Feb. 6 interview on NY1’s Inside City Hall show. “We are monitoring the situation daily to determine if our plans to protect New Yorkers need to be adjusted accordingly.”
....these are just some of the dumb things she said.

Fuck it, my grand plan for a secret holiday destination is blown.

The Falklands Islands government has confirmed the territory's first case of the new coronavirus.
A patient tested positive after being admitted to hospital with symptoms on March 31, according to a statement released on Friday that said they were in isolation and in "stable condition".
Located in the southern Atlantic Ocean, the British overseas territory had been among a dwindling number of remote places that have reported no COVID-19 cases during the pandemic.

You are right. The Chinese forbade tour groups, but not individual travellers, from leaving China at the end of January. The Thai did fuck all and in fact only recently closed its borders when it introduced the health requirement two weeks ago, now superseded by a total block on foreigners.

Fuck knows what JPPR2 is wittering on about.

    You do talk shite sometimes.

A few signs spotted about the place does not constitute government policy or what passes as the law.

I personally saw several PRC nationals in Central Festival, Apple store buying their I-phones in mid February.

More than 100,000 new cases yesterday for the first time, led by the US (32,000) and France (23,000).

If you thought March was bad, this is going to be a deadly, decisive month.

Hey I saw signs all over the place banning Chinese from entering. Now it was in conjunction with both travel constraints from China but I think fear blew through CB. I sent pictures to my friends of the signs as in the US we have to be PC. Here, if they do not want you in, they just put it on the door and that includes westerners.

As for the foreigners spreading it, not sure. It appears every day something more is learned about this virus, its incubation period, its active life, how its transmitted and how far is proper social distancing. All you can do is adapt to the ever changing environment.

May sound cynical, but this example of dutifully shunning opportunists is no less hypocritical than laws and penalties for money laundering, human trafficking and other heinous offences against decency, much of which is controlled by people at the top end with established routes, protections and boltholes, to profit regardless of conditions, while dissuading others from following suit.

So they arrest this guy for gouging a few $$ or ££, while the real thieves do hail Marys for a virus that allows them to gouge or steal from millions to billions, the difference being that one targets an egotistical consumer that likes to think he is important with protected interests, while the smart ones quietly wrangle a system that can be coaxed to turn a blind eye.

Not sure I can cope with much more quarantine.

No shortage of stuff to moan about, but must confess I get a kick out of 'racist' signs in Thailand which demonstrate that the Thais have an edge in at least this one metric over polite westerners.

Sure it also pisses me off when targeted for special treatment for daring to be farang, but after a while you get used to that.

Given the increasing anti-farang rhetoric spouted by both local and national government, I have now decided to review my own policy concerning residence here and have decided that once things settle down we shall quit the country, in my case for good. I was considering Bangkok as a future billet after we relocate from Pattaya but have dismissed this as an option.

And I have put the wingman on notice that any future requests from extended family etc for social assistance should be forwarded to Pattaya City Hall and Government House, Bangkok.

    Fuck 'em.

Just doing a bit of TD shit-stirring if that is ok?

Quoted this because I'm sure there are a few members that will remind you of this statement in the years to come.

...in all honesty, when you have vilified Thailand and the Thai people, you have always gave a detailed response as to why, but I can not recollect a time you have actually threatened to leave.

What was the defining straw moment that broke the camels back?
