Cheers katie, yep I see that, I've just got a feeling that if more testing were available and being done that number for Thailand would be many, many times higher. I've been going to-and-from work all week and there's a check-point set up right out front of my office -- it's barely ever manned (other than the first day when all the TV cameras were there) and even when operating they're only randomly checking every 6th vehicle or so.

Other than that you wouldn't really know anything is going on.

To reduce direct contact with other patients, you can also get tested for COVID-19 at a drive-thru testing station at Ramkhamhaeng Hospital.
Once you’re there, you don’t need to step out of the vehicle. Just roll down your window and allow the staff member to take a sample from your nasal cavity and throat. Then, the hospital will send your sample to a laboratory for examination.

It's not just the reagents/ chemicals/ equipment that's lacking. There's also shortage here of PPE. I've seen reports / vids on local news about health workers, barangay (village) support staff & volunteers making their own makeshift face shields out of clear plastic folders, use of rain coats & garbage bags instead of hazmat suits, face masks, etc. Accdg to the govt, PPE for med staff have been ordered, but it takes time for delivery, etc.

Public hospitals in PI have been full prior to the pandemic, ICU beds few & far between. Prior to the lockdown last 15 March, I had a colleague who experienced difficulty in finding a hospital with ICU - needed for a relative who suffered a stroke.

I've also read/heard that there are only ~1,500 ventilators in PI, 500 of which are in Metro Manila. The provinces are f*****.

Actually, the whole world is f***** right now. I saw the PPE worn by the UK NHS in the drive through testing centers. The med staff wore a sleeveless plastic sheet over their scrub suit, surgical mask (not N95) and gloves. Huge contrast to the full hazmat suits of med staff in S Korea's drive through centers. Lack of PPE too in the US - many vids about it. Sigh...

Not to mention many poor ppl now getting hungry here, because of 3 weeks of lockdown. In some areas, govt support was just 2 kg rice + 2 packs of instant noodles. Certainly not enough for a family. Double sigh...

Stay safe, sane & healthy, everyone!

We're reusing the 'disposable' surgical masks, Bought a couple of boxes when the shit hit the fan, a couple of days later you couldn't get them for love or money. Sister in Law was giving us hers from Macau but they can't cross the border now without 14 days quarantine at their own expense so that's our supply gone.
Macau ID holders get government issued 1 mask a day (10 at a time). Sis in law doesn't leave the house so was giving us hers. Quite high quality disposable surgical masks.
I give them a rinse after a couple of days and soak them in a dettol solution. Best I can do under the circumstances.
    Got to wear them here.

From my own internet research I understand there may be only around 3,000 ventilators in Thailand but of course assessing the needs of each patient in gauging oxygen requirements, executing intubation and maintaining specific nursing care during the ventilator's use is a skilled business and requires specialised training.

    Infection is a perennial risk.

Best to hope one is in the 80% cohort that merely experiences a bout of the flu or if worse the immune system defeats the virus before the cytokine cascade gets out of control.

This has to be the worst virus the Chinese have produced yet.

138 medical staff have tested positive in Malaysia.

The army are surveilling with drones. Road blocks everywhere.

You are only allowed one person per car and are not permitted to go more than 10kms from your home for essential services or medical treatment.

Haven't left the house in 2 or 3 weeks, lost count now.

Shutdown should have been over on the 14th but talk of extending it by another 2 weeks now, to take it up to 6 weeks.

Never underestimate the Thai willingness to exploit and profiteer.

It is of course only common sense that as many as possible are tested at every level, wherever and without restriction if this pandemic is to be successfully controlled.

Thai greediness and lack of commmonsense militates against this.

Charging people the equivalent, in many cases, more than a week's salary for a relatively straightforward test is a disgrace but there you go.

Maybe and maybe not - I personally do not believe what is printed, spoken or quoted... very little, if any accountability

On the basis of Thailands reported number of Covid 19 cases on the Covid Trackers i.e. 2k confirmed with @ 20 fatalities for a country with @ 65M residents - absolutely "stellar"

    Can you believe the metrics?

    Just in on Thaiger...

Phuket has reported 9 new Covid-19 coronavirus cases today (Saturday), bringing the total number to 109. Of the total, 17 have made a full recovery and been discharged from hospital; 92 are still in hospital, with 1 patient remaining in critical condition.

1,423 people are considered at high risk due to contact with confirmed cases. 221 people are in hospital, 129 of them awaiting test results. 1,202 have already been sent home. As in the past week, most of the cases come out of Patong.

Yesterday Region 1 police in Pattaya province seized 787,779 face masks and 10,000 litres of alcohol gel smuggled into the country from Vietnam. The smuggled goods were found in three houses in Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi and Don Muang.

The smugglers’ told police that they planned on selling the face masks for 14 baht per piece which would have potentially made them over 10,000,000 baht.

I have been wearing masks when I leave my house to go out which isn't much. I have cans of Lysol disinfectant spray. After a day I hang it and spray, then wear another mask. Have had same masks for weeks now. My daughter suggested this method as this is what they are doing at various hospitals around the US. They go a bit further and first expose them to 125f heat in a oven for 5 hours, then take out and spray.

At this juncture I guess whatever works.

I will say that my wife has read that many foreigners in various parts of Thailand are being called out as they dismiss wearing a mask in public.

^ Just shows you, Thailand just doesn't give a shit, its all about the dollar.

The confusion they are making about visa extensions is the same.

My friend in Ubon if she wants to extend her stay has to go to Khon kaen to Laos embassy and then back to Ubon to get extension its complete madness.

And the face masks would have sold out quite quickly.

Did a Makro run this AM - no face masks - had chicken eggs though

Funny how they are thinking of bringing in a 24 hour curfew when their covid figures are so low and seem stable in the pick a number between 100 and 150 range every day.

Honestly, the sheer stupidity of the Thai will kill thousands more.

Just what the fuck are those infected people doing in a bloody hospital if they are not in need of critical ICU care!!??

Christ on a bike, the entire world is giving out the same advice: if you contract it, stay at home and on no account must you go to a hospital. If you cannot breathe and your skin is turning white, with blue lips, then go to hospital but not before.

Unfuckingbelievable. And suspectd sufferers are remaining in hospital still awaiting results from tests!!!???

It is really an incredible situation - gotta go back to the initial info - 80% of those infected experienced mild symptoms. Runny nose/sniffles, mild headache, scratchy throat, slight fever, nothing the would prevent them from going to work or even calling themselves sick.

Yet, there is/are the 5% that wound up in serious respiratory distress and the 15% fatalities in the "old age" group.

So, this is a most serious problem for a small section of our society - is/are our actions correct, underserved, of over blown knee jerk reactions?

Consider the serious economic impact and realize that a great many folk who will not get even a sniffle out of this Pandemic are suffering a catastrophic financial calamity that they will never recover from?

Yes we have a front rank of bog roll decoys, kitchen rolls in reserve followed by packs of Kleenex and bundles of grubby 20 bt notes, though someone suggested at the first sign of violence I lock up the family and lead the mob against the guy next door.
