trump only cares about trump....he doesn't give a shit that other people are sick and dying....he views all of this through one lens....how it impacts his chances of re-election.

all he's doing now is setting the stage for, "if it wasn't for me, it would have been 1/2 million dead. because of me it was only 150,000 dead." hoping that his base won't realize that many of those people died in large part because of his incompetence and his administration's mismanagement of the crisis.

    edited to add...

Just three weeks ago, President DONALD TRUMP suggested to reporters in the Capitol that the coronavirus -- which has now killed more people than did the attacks on Sept. 11 -- would just “go away” so we should stay “calm.” The weather would take care of it. Medicine would come quickly. Some elixir would make it all disappear.

NOW, THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION is saying that its policies would likely result in the deaths of between 100,000 and nearly a quarter-million Americans.

THE PRESIDENT IS trying to convince the American people he has a handle on a situation that, by his own team’s metrics and projections, has spiraled wildly out of control.

EVEN THE ROSIEST OF SCENARIOS have 50,000 Americans dying from this virus. That’s roughly the American death toll of the Vietnam War. THE WHITE HOUSE is left making the argument that, in the absence of its policies, if the administration did nothing, millions would have died. Of course, no one was suggesting the administration do nothing.

TRUMP’S PREDICTIONS were wrong. Speaking Tuesday from the White House, TRUMP said it’s easy to be negative, but he’d rather be positive and a “cheerleader” for the United States.

AND NOW, 221 days before Americans vote, TRUMP will be running with the backdrop of hospitals teeming with diseased patients, body bags being loaded onto refrigerated trucks, the economy halted and an endless supply of video clips showing the president seemingly oblivious that this could all be heading our way.

Will the world descend into chaos as people unable to work or provide for themselves turn on each other? I expect it will and the U.S. will be one of the first to crumble within two months as reality strikes.
    Scary times.
A few days into Italy’s lockdown, people across the country sang and played music from their balconies as they came together to say “Everything will be alright” (Andrà tutto bene). Three weeks on, the singing has stopped and social unrest is mounting as a significant part of the population, especially in the poorer south, realise that everything is not all right.

“They are no longer singing or dancing on the balconies,” said Salvatore Melluso, a priest at Caritas Diocesana di Napoli, a church-run charity in Naples. “Now people are more afraid – not so much of the virus, but of poverty. Many are out of work and hungry. There are now long queues at food banks.”

There have been far fewer coronavirus deaths in Italy’s south compared with the worst-affected northern regions, but the pandemic is having a serious impact on livelihoods.

Tensions are building across the poorest southern regions of Campania, Calabria, Sicily and Puglia as people run out of food and money. There have been reports of small shop owners being pressured to give food for free, while police are patrolling supermarkets in some areas to stop thefts. The self-employed or those working on contracts that do not guarantee social benefits have lost salaries, and many small businesses may never reopen.

Paride Ezzine, a waiter in Palermo, Sicily, no longer gets his salary. “Obviously, due to the lockdown, the restaurant closed,” he said. “I have a wife and two children and we’re living off our savings. But I don’t know how long they will last. I asked my bank to postpone payment instalments – they said no. This situation is bringing us to our knees.”

The ramifications of the lockdown, which is poised to be extended until at least Easter, are also affecting the estimated 3.3 million people in Italy who were working off the books, of whom more than 1 million live across Campania, Sicily, Puglia and Calabria, according to the most recent figures from CGIA Mestre, a Venice-based small business association.

“In reality, we don’t know how many are working in the black as these numbers are only estimates,” said Giovanni Orsina, a politics professor at Luiss University in Rome. “However, a significant number of people live day to day, doing occasional jobs. There are also many shopkeepers, or professionals working for themselves, who may have moderate reserves that will run out the longer they’re in lockdown.”

Amid the brewing social unrest, the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, said €4.3bn (£3.8bn) from a solidarity fund would immediately be advanced to all municipalities and an additional €400m would go to mayors for conversion into food stamps. But mayors have protested that the funds, especially the €400m for food vouchers, are insufficient.

“It is absolutely not enough,” said Salvo Pogliese, the mayor of Catania. “We were expecting more and I hope the government will find a way. The situation is extremely delicate as a significant part of the population has zero income. Those who before lived with dignity, now find themselves in difficulty.”

One of the issues is that the €4.3bn was due to be given to mayors in May, and much of the funding had already been designated to be spent in other areas.

“If the government expects this money to be used to feed people, then municipalities won’t have money for other things,” said Orsina. “And the new tranche of €400m, if you divide it up between all municipalities, is peanuts. The problem has been offloaded to mayors – Italians will now go asking them for money that they can’t give. Expectations have been created that can’t be satisfied.”
There are also signs that criminal organisations are exploiting the situation. Investigations are under way into the activities of a Facebook group called “National Revolution” that has been inciting people to loot supermarkets.
“The people [behind this group] are those who, before the lockdown, made a living from house robberies and shop thefts,” said a source from the Sicily unit of Digos, Italy’s anti-terrorism police squad. “But with some of these criminal activities being on standby due to the lockdown, the only shops open to rob are supermarkets and chemists. These are people who, due to rampant poverty in the south, usually survive from criminal activities, but who are now not doing so well.”

Leoluca Orlando, the mayor of Palermo, has asked the government to establish a “survival income” for the poorest citizens owing to fears that “criminal groups could promote violence acts”.

Officials also worry that the mafia will take advantage of the rising poverty, swooping in to recruit people to its organisation. “Criminal organisations have plenty of money and people could end up working for them, and once that starts, they won’t go back,” said Orsina.

Meanwhile, taxes for small businesses have merely been suspended, not abolished, meaning owners will still have to find money for contributions at a later stage, despite losing income during the lockdown. And those who can tap into financial support are coming up against stifling bureaucracy.

“Bureaucracy is the real enemy of this country and in a crisis situation it’s impossible to solve this problem,” said Massimiliano Panarari, a professor at Luiss University. “People may have tried to keep their spirits up at the beginning of the lockdown, but now their thoughts are returning towards the bitter reality of a terribly fragile country.”

Any mention of 90 day reporting?

Would be insane (so what's new) under lockdown to be expected to attend immigration offices which can accommodate no more than a few people with proper social distancing; the scope for transmission under those conditions range from phenomenal to criminal neglect against the basic principles of lockdown.

Thai regulations now require the wearing of face masks in public.
Seen plenty of masks for sale recently, though this is clearly not being enforced.

Wimbledon canceled due to coronavirus pandemic

    The COVID-2019 Thread-wimbledon-converted-png

It is the first time Wimbledon has been canceled since World War II in 1945. It is also the first time since the tournament began in 1877 that the event will not be played during peacetime.

Wimbledon had been scheduled to be played between June 29 and July 12.
Though the All England Club considered a number of alternatives, including postponement, it decided that cancellation was the best option.

Truly, quite the weirdly stupidest people in the world.

On one hand they are content to give pretty much anyone from over 30 plus countries entry for 30 days without the semblances of any scrutiny and then in an orgy pf bureaucratic paranoia demand of the very same people more evidence of their bona fides than that required of a proven bankrupt kleptomaniac seeking a bank loan because an international catastrophe paralysing all air travel means they cannot leave.

    Never liked them.

    In the UK.

The Armed Forces have been working with both NHS and Volunteers to set up what is being termed Nightingale Hospitals, essentially quick erect wards with ICU capabilities in volume in a confined internal space. So far they are being set up in major cities, the expectation being that c30-50% admitted will not survive, primarily aimed at older people initially because survival rates are expected to be lower, sadly also morgue contingencies are also being built to serve the expect output.

Hope for the best but plan for the worst -sadly. Keep safe all.

Evangelical Profits Paramount: Hobby Lobby Nonsense

Hobby Lobby defies shutdown orders, reopens some stores
    Bethany Biron

As Hobby Lobby continues its mission to keep doors open in the face of the coronavirus, the arts-and-crafts retailer is quietly reopening stores around the country, defying states' stay-at-home policies.

On Monday, the company resumed business in several states where it had been forced to temporarily close. A March 28 memo obtained by Business Insider equipped managers with talking points for "how to respond and communicate if visited by a local authority that asks why we are open."

In a separate leaked note sent early last week, executives wrote that the company "is going to make every effort to continue working the employees."
The reopenings include stores in Ohio and Wisconsin - which both enacted strict shelter-in-place orders on March 24 - where nearly all Hobby Lobby locations have been reopened after shuttering for only one week. During calls made to each location by Business Insider, employees confirmed that all 19 Hobby Lobby locations in Ohio were open as of Monday afternoon, as were 17 out of 20 stores in Wisconsin that were still listed as "temporarily closed" on Google.

Of the three stores closed in Wisconsin, at least one was forcibly shuttered by police officers after briefly opening on Monday, according to local reports. An employee at this store told Business Insider on Monday that the store was closed but employees were there "working on projects." A similar incident was reported in Jeffersonville, Indiana, where local authorities forced a store to close after it was open for one hour on Monday morning.
Hobby Lobby did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
'I want to stay home to stop the spread of the virus."

Despite mandates in at least 32 states calling for the closure of nonessential businesses, Hobby Lobby appears to be doing everything in its power to avoid shutting its doors.

Four Hobby Lobby employees in North Carolina, Ohio, and another state in the Midwest - who spoke with Business Insider on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution but whose employment statuses and identities have been confirmed - said they continue to receive contradictory instructions regarding store operations.
"The main thing is they're not really telling us anything," one employee in Ohio said. "Last Monday we closed because we were a nonessential business basically, and that was fine with me. Not even four days later, we're reopened because they're saying we're essential now."

The employee, who is also a military veteran with post traumatic stress disorder, said his attempts to contact the Ohio Department of Health and the office of Governor Mike DeWine have gone unanswered.

"My wife is pretty furious. We're trying to take care of my mother who had knee surgery and also has multiple sclerosis, which is an autoimmune disease. I don't want to bring it home and get her infected," he said. "I used to love working for this company, but since this pandemic I've seen how callous and irresponsible it has been."
"This has all been so stressful and exhausting," said an employee in a nearby Midwestern state, where stores have yet to close despite mandates from lawmakers. "I don't want to stay home because I'm too lazy to work. I want to stay home to do my part to stop the spread of the virus."

Employees question Hobby Lobby's 'essential' proclamations

Elsewhere, in states including Colorado and North Carolina - which recently enacted stay-at-home protocols in the last few days - Hobby Lobby is avoiding shutting down altogether, insisting it is "essential" because it sells educational materials and products for home-based businesses.

However, employees told Business Insider they are frustrated by these justifications, given that Hobby Lobby does not sell universally accepted essential items like food, toiletries, medicine, and cleaning products. While big-box stores like Walmart and Target provide services widely considered essential, craft stores are not on the list, nor are they included in guidance issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

"They are not exempt," Conor Cahill, press secretary for Colorado Governor Jared Polis, told the Denver Post regarding Hobby Lobby on Monday.
Adding to their frustration, two employees said the company's warehouse in Oklahoma City has been closed until further notice, meaning stores aren't even able to restock inventory that managers and executives are claiming are essential in the first place.

"Hobby Lobby is fighting that we are an essential store," a Hobby Lobby employee in North Carolina said. "There is absolutely nothing in Hobby Lobby worth spreading this illness. I'm honestly appalled at this company and the way it doesn't care for its employees and only about making their money."

The employees said they are worried about both their personal safety and a lack of resources needed to maintain a clean and sanitized workspace. The North Carolina employee said her team is not allowed to wear gloves or masks while working because management told them "it would make customers uncomfortable."
Others are concerned their stores aren't equipped with adequate cleaning supplies or the manpower needed to clean effectively. Hobby Lobby executives began slashing jobs and cutting salaries last week in order to cut costs in states with stores required to close because of state regulations.

"Management is being so secretive and won't be open with what's going on," another Ohio employee wrote in an email to Business Insider. "We also don't have the employees to do the extensive cleaning that they say we are doing on the website because payroll keeps telling management to cut hours. I'm just very anxious about this whole thing and don't understand why no one is helping us employees out with this situation."

I note that the reported deaths in the UK are only those who die in hospitals. Care homes, in particular, are not included. Bearing in mind a high percentage of reported deaths in Spain and Italy are from care homes, I wonder what the true figure is.

WASHINGTON — On the same day President Donald Trump praised California’s efforts to contain the new coronavirus, Rep. Devin Nunes in a TV interview called the state’s decision to close schools “way overkill” and said he wants people to return to work over the next “week to two weeks.”

28 University of Texas spring breakers who flouted public health advice test positive for coronavirus

As stores and offices closed throughout March, many people watched with anger as thousands of college students poured into tropical locales, crowding beaches and bars to party during their regularly scheduled spring breaks.

Now, as the pandemic has spread further, many people’s fears have been realized as college students by the dozen have tested positive for covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

About 70 students from the University of Texas at Austin, all in their 20s, chartered a plane to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in late March. They took the trip despite public health advice to avoid crowding as well as nonessential air travel.

On Tuesday, Austin public health officials announced that 28 students, more than a third of the young people who took the trip, had returned and tested positive for the coronavirus. Many of the remaining students are under public health monitoring, according to officials.

As ever, ignorance and stupidity are the main drivers in the UK's handling of the pandemic.

As recently as a mere three weeks ago the cretinous and catastrophically misguided policy of Dominic Cummings and his puppet Clown BoJo was to let the disease spread among society so as to promote the theory herd immunity would resolve everything and therefore testing was not required, a policy the WHO condemned in utter disbelief almost immediately.

Britain is now having to live with that stupidity as it grapples with measures Italy and the WHO said were vital three weeks ago when hundreds there were dying daily.

Only 2000 of the half million NHS employees have been tested, a shocking indictment of the utter incompetence of this shambolic government every bit as egregious as the Chinese.

But never mind this tsunami of disgrace washing over these buffoons, let us take heart that the British can still find it in them to adopt a doctrinaire policy of name-shaming because of political alignment, even if it is utterly unwarranted.

Khan has repeatedly demanded that Tfl should only be used by key workers - it patently isn't and that is a matter for central government. Khan has repeatedly told of the not entirely insignificant fact that 30% of his transport workers are either sick or self-isolating. Despite this hindrance the stupid and the vacuous still think the Tube should be running as if it was Springtime and fucking Mary Poppins was sprinkling pixie dust over all and sundry.

London should have its transport hub shut down to everyone other than key workers with army personnel manning stations checking identity passes.

That was so fucking obvious from the beginning but with a dysfunctional cabinet recruited for no reason other than their slavish belief in Brexit, it is scarcely surprising the Clown BoJo and his rabble are useless.

Transport is the key to transmission rates, take that away from the majority and the RO rate will inevitably decline.

But in the end as the WHO leader repeatedly drummed it into a dilatory world, testing was the key but Britain with its bizarrely inept cackhanded bollocks of a public policy has created a death cult out of administrative ineptitude.

Denmark shut down three weeks ago, devised a taxation and minimum wage policy for all its citizens, forbade any movement except for designated workers, and sealed off every venue that afforded any public contact between citizens. Even its takeaways could only operate if all transactions were made and paid electronically and collection was undertaken in a sealed environment that prevented any physical contact between server and customer.

Daenmark has had among the lowest infection rates in Europe and is now contemplating relaxing its quarantine regime.

That was a government that knew how to govern.

And this BoJo the Clown's roadshow is going to manage Britain's exit from Europe into a world doomed to recession?

    The perfect storm cometh.

^ I agree, there will be many lessons to learn from this and the medical "experts" will have to examine their advice to the Govt and formulate a comprehensive strategy for any future widespread health crisis.

    * failure to react quickly to shutdown and segregate
    * failure to ensure frontline and essential workers are adequately protected with PPE
    * failure to secure critical med supplies and reagents in a timely manner
    * failure to get the test kits secured in a timely manner
    * failure to get testing rolled out quickly
    * lag on getting the ventilator programme running, although here there is much misinformation with suppliers promising the earth but when they get investigated they have the capacity to produce but have not secure the component supplies to manufacture the promised quantity.

Much of this is logistics driven and the lessons can be learned and supplies common to any medical emergency secured and stored for the future, like they used to be before all the storage cuts and drive to reduce stock.

All this though pales besides the confused and inept advice the Govt has been provided by its so called medical experts, they will all get peerages of course but they have been caught out badly, worse as they had 3-4 weeks of info from other countries earlier in the contagion cycle.

I worked in government service for many years, and the one thing most understood when it came to "expert advice" was the inevitability that it was often multi-faceted and of a changing hue dependent upon expedience and in the final analysis decisions have to be made, and are made, through the application of judgement. If the decision maker is a fucking idiot, weak or in thrall to false Gods or swayed by charlatans addicted to eccentricity and obscurantism ( Cummings ), then it follows you will have poor outcomes.

Brexit and COVID19 are the battle honours for this Tory administration who are no more than gravediggers for Britain's future.
