Due to covid-19 Trump has to give more press meetings. The embarrassment was always there, but now it is more often.

Anyway, he forgot to mention this little piece of information:

Real question though would be imager calibrated to whose standard and when.

That set aside - a person with an abnormally high temperature would stand out to the person checking temps at the store entrance

It truly is quite remarkable the difference in attitude to the welfare of citizenry displayed by the German authorities when compared to the somewhat ineffectual and seemingly uncaring Brits whose support is evidently more rooted in vacuous rhetoric rather than action.

Both peoples enjoy high disposable incomes and share a common pursuit in travelling abroad for holidays and recreation, much more so than perhaps any other Western society.

As of yesterday the Brit government has repatriated by chartered flights the sum total of 1,200 of a total potential of over 300,000, from Peru and Wuhan.

Contrast that with the German performance in which over 42,000 stranded travellers have been airlifted from over 60 countries on 160 charter flights in the past two weeks alone.

And of course, where there was spare capacity the Germans offered that space to anyone who wished to travel with them to, more often than not, Frankfurt, free of charge.

The Tory government's record so far is quite pitiful on any analysis and is characterised not by competence but by sloth, dilatoriness, vacillation and penny-pinching, the latter of course is symptomatic of its attitude towards the ordinary Joe but not their corporate, tax-evading chums.

“The key is to make sure that we can get a set of crew members that can man all those critical functions on the ship, make sure they’re clean, then get them back on while we clean the ship and get the other crew members off,” Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said in a Tuesday interview with CNN. “And that’s the process we’re going through. It’s very methodical. We’re absolutely accelerating it as we go.”

The 1,100-foot Theodore Roosevelt tied up in Guam last week after several sailors were discovered to be infected. On Monday, Capt. Brett Crozier sent an extraordinary four-page letter asking for Navy help. His warship has no space to give infected patients a separate berthing space and bathroom, so he asked for help finding rooms ashore.

After disinfecting, I wonder if they crew the ship with personnel that have passed through quarantine. If not, they risk deploying an early carrier with no symptoms back on board to trigger a new outbreak.

The Germans are simply better at protecting their citizens abroad.

The rationale for that is perhaps academic when one is marooned as a Brit, but put it this way, there is no chance of German folk being left abandoned in frightening isolation in India as has happened to Brits.

But the one thing that does mark the Germans out is they understood the need for speed in a fast-changing environment whereas Dominic Raab, the British foreign secretary, hides away with his finger up his arse.

And I should imagine once this catastrophe is over and the full scale of economic ruination is realised, many in the UK will ponder just why they are cutting themselves off from unfettered trade with 500 million of their neighbours 22 miles away.

The posturing Brexiteer has never looked more absurd.

One wonders where a fully cleared/trained/competent crew might be found?

I suspect there will also be an "acclimatisation" period.

Makes sense, they wouldn't wanna give away degradation in military capability.
They'd do the same if it was about police/fire/ambulance services not being able to do their jobs just to reduce the panic for the hoi polloi and not to encourage others with criminal motivations.

    Bloody god botherers again.

Three days after the Christian Open Door evangelical megachurch’s “week of prayer and fasting” in Mulhouse, eastern France, pastor Samuel Peterschmitt, the organiser of the event, began feeling feverish. He, his six children and 13 grandchildren have all since been diagnosed with coronavirus.

The event ran for five days, from February 17th-21st. The first case of coronavirus, also known as Covid-19, in Alsace was diagnosed in Strasbourg on February 29th. The victim had not attended the 2,500-strong religious gathering, but her two children had accompanied their grandparents. The regional health authority (ARS) missed the clue.

The penny finally dropped on March 2nd, when a solitary inhabitant of Nîmes who drove back alone from Mulhouse tested positive. “Eureka!,”
Christophe Lannelongue, an investigator for the ARS told Radio France. “It was the gathering at the Christian Open Door in Mulhouse!”

Even then, authorities believed that only a few hundred of the faithful had been contaminated. It took more than a month for the prayer week to be recognised, in the words of French health minister Olivier Véran, as “the tipping point” of the French epidemic, which by Tuesday had infected 44,550 people and claimed 3,024 lives.

This is what happens when you're a stupid bald orange turd and you put some drug industry executive in charge of Health and Human Services instead of a recognised subject matter expert.

Washington (CNN)Despite having committed to transferring 2,000 ventilators in military stocks to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services to fight the coronavirus outbreak, the Pentagon has not shipped any of them because the agencies have not asked for them or provided a shipping location, the Pentagon's top logistics official said Tuesday.

In order to ship the badly needed equipment, the Defense Department has to be given a location to send them by civilian authorities who have to decide where the items are most needed.
"There was discussion with HHS on where to send them. And then they said hey wait, we're trying to take a look at the demand that's required, and so we were asked to just wait while there was just some sorting through on that. And I won't speak on behalf of them, but we were in a position to provide 2,000," said Lt. General Giovanni Tuck.

Tuck said he had no details on the HHS decisions, but added that "we haven't provided any, because as of last night, we were asked to just hold on the ones that we have, and then we will push them when they're ready for them."

A maths professor thinks that half of Sweden will be infected in April if they don't do anything.

"Half of Sweden will be infected in April". April will be the month when most Swedes are infected by the coronavirus. This is according to Tom Britton, professor of mathematical statistics, who works on models of how infectious diseases spread in the population.

    More stoopid people.

Seventy young adults are being investigated for COVID-19 exposure after taking a chartered plane to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for spring break roughly 10 days ago, Austin Public Health says.

Of those 70, 28 have tested positive for COVID-19, and dozens are under investigation by the public health authority; four had no symptoms.
The individuals in their 20s flew out together, then took separate flights back, which allowed for the spread of the virus, APH said in an announcement Tuesday morning.

APH and UT Health, along with University Health Services, tracked down the affected travelers using flight manifests, and APH says those who tested positive are self-isolating.

J.B. Bird, director of media relations for UT Austin, told KUT the 28 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 are UT students, adding that the university is working with APH to assist in
    contact tracing efforts.

    Extremely sad, but not surprising.

Coronavirus: Thai elephants face starvation as tourism collapses

More than 1,000 elephants face starvation in Thailand because the coronavirus crisis has slashed revenue from tourism, conservationists say.

An almost total absence of visitors means that many caretakers are struggling to afford food for Thailand's 4,000 captive elephants.

The animals can eat up to 200kg (440lb) of food a day.

Thailand reported 127 new confirmed cases of the virus on Monday, bringing the country's recorded total to 1,651.

Lek Chailert, founder of the Save Elephant Foundation, told the BBC: "If there is no support forthcoming to keep them safe, these elephants, some of whom are pregnant, will either starve to death or may be put on to the streets to beg."

^^ How did elephants survive before they were captured and made to draw paintings and kick footballs for the tourists?

Maybe release them into their natural habitat and let them get on with it?
