India hasn't increased much in a week or so, nor South Africa - not sure I believe that (I hope it's true). South Korea dropping down to 12th and should be outside the top 20 in a week or so...

The US and Europe are sadly on the up and up (maybe related to the article I posted earlier).

Apparently there are 195 countries in the world, we're now at 177.

Yea, I've signed up/registered with them. Haven't yet used them - web page advertises "free same day delivery" but, when I tried to place a test order the next delivery slot available was next week sometime so I didn't bother ordering. Another thing I found was the selection available on the website was quite restricted relative to our local Tops market. Also - higher prices charged.

That being said. I will place a test order sometime in the future. But, it's just the two of us, most our our needs are for fresh foods, produce and fruits which everybody prefers to select yourself. The other bulk foodstuffs and supplies we more or less doubled our spares stock so we would not run into a must shop today trip scenario.

So far a Makro run satisfies our needs - Makro is closer. Tops was more convenient because its at the Westgate Mall - but, as the Westgate Mall is closed - Tops is still open but with a Makro and a Tesco Lotus closer and doing our bill paying at the local 7. Not a pressing issue.

Ordering on-line is convenient and something I will do, the wife has quite the opposite idea. She has an extremely negative view in that she is certain you will get ripped off. Well, it is her country. Who am I to argue?

Shopping in the KSA during a pandemic? No eggs, but everything else one would expect to find in a supermarket.

Yes, and you'd expect it keep going up too (although I'm not sure what measures the government are taking?). It's the kinda jump one would expect from India, the Subcontinent and Africa. In most countries, 1000 cases jumps to 2,000 then 5,000" very quickly. Then, without measures which I suspect are impossible in India, the number becomes huge within a few weeks.

I wonder if the Chinese number is in any way accurate? If they have halted the virus? It's clearly possible in places like Japan and Taiwan, but in China???

Agree fresh is best picked in person. I put an order in yesterday with delivery set for tomorrow morning. We passed on the fruit and veggies.

Unfortunately i live outside villa delivery area., and surprisingly foodland do not seem to have such a service. They may need to change that sharpish.

As I said before the real virus is just emerging. China is buying us out. But my post got deleted

Real ‘China virus’ killed us years ago

Australian authorities to check every proposed foreign investment during coronavirus crisis

As much of the western world locks down economies as the implications of the coronavirus pandemic grip harder, China has made moves towards restarting its own economic activity, raising concerns distressed foreign assets could be bought without appropriate checks and balances.

Australian authorities to check every proposed foreign investment during coronavirus crisis | World news | The Guardian

82 tons of material brought to China

The public has been partially upset since the purchases of two Chinese real estate developers in Australia came to light: the employees of Greenland Australia and Risland Australia bought more than 100 tons of masks, clinical thermometers, gloves or disinfectant spray and the painkillers Panadol, which was exported by India, in Australia and shipped them to the People's Republic. The products have been practically unavailable in Australian stores for weeks. Risland Australia itself reported that it had flown 900,000 pairs of medical gloves and 100,000 medical overalls, a total of 82 tons of material, from China to Sydney in a chartered cargo plane. Australian society is extremely sensitive because Chinese have been buying up baby milk in Australia for years, for example, on a large scale in order to resell them in their home country with very high margins.

A pretty graph illustrating how the, "Total no. of Coronavirus cases: (1st March - 27th March)", by country.

Some have been in the lead, only to be overtaken by the latecomers.

Grim forecast of coronavirus infections refuted by senior health official

A senior doctor at Thailand’s Disease Control Department (DCD), has dismissed as “very unlikely” the grim forecast by some doctors that by April 15th COVID-19 infections in Thailand will reach 350,000, with about 7,000 fatalities.

DCD Deputy Director-General Dr. Thanarak Phlipat said on Facebook today that he has received many enquiries about whether forecasts of an exponential rise in the number of infections and fatalities is reasonable.

He responded by saying it is “very unlikely.”

With less than 20 days to go before April 15th, Dr. Thanarak said that the predictions of 7,000 fatalities for Thailand, in the case of no lockdowns, and 485, if a lockdown is imposed, are inflated.

Thailand’s death toll up to March 29th stood at 7, out of the 1,388 confirmed COVID-19 infections.

He said that he does not know what assumptions were used in those forecasts and doubted the forecasters’ expertise in epidemiology and biological statistics, adding “most importantly, I don’t know what their motive is for releasing those figures.”

He explained that the Public Health Ministry has epidemiologists to develop forecasts, and those forecasts are updated periodically, based on the latest data. These forecasts are used in the planning for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

According to Dr. Thanarak, the worst case scenario, up to April 15th, is that there would be 25,000 infections if there are no anti-COVID measures taken at all and there are no more cluster infections, like at the boxing event and at entertainment venues.

With the imposition of social distancing measures, which is currently being observed by only about 50% of the Thai population, he said that the number of infections is predicted to reach 17,600, but 7,700 if 80% of the population were to follow the measure.

These figures, said Dr. Thanarak, were worked out on the basis of the best data available used to guide the formulation of policy, adding that they were not invented to cause public confusion.

He advised that any predictions about the pandemic must be based on undistorted facts.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/fda-issues-emergency-authorization-of-anti-malaria-drug-for-coronavirus-care/ar-BB11SD0U?li=BBnb7Kz

The Food and Drug Administration on Sunday issued an emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, decades-old malaria drugs championed by President Donald Trump for coronavirus treatment despite scant evidence.

The agency allowed for the drugs to be "donated to the Strategic National Stockpile to be distributed and prescribed by doctors to hospitalized teen and adult patients with COVID-19, as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible," HHS said in a statement, announcing that Sandoz donated 30 million doses of hydroxychloroquine to the stockpile and Bayer donated 1 million doses of chloroquine.

The move was supported by the White House, part of a
larger Trump-backed effort to speed the use of anti-malaria drugs as a potential therapy for a virus that has no proven treatment or cure. FDA already has allowed New York state to test administering the medication to seriously ill patients, and some hospitals have added it to their treatment protocols.

"Let's see how it works," Trump said at a press briefing on Sunday, referencing New York state's efforts. "It may. It may not."

Someone mentioned earlier the US wasn’t helping other countries with COVID. Yes, it did. A bad move in hindsight. Perhaps other countries will learn the hard way not to send precious supplies overseas in a pandemic.

    How did this get by?

The United States Announces Assistance To Combat the Novel Coronavirus
    PRESS STATEMENT
MICHAEL R. POMPEO, SECRETARY OF STATE
    FEBRUARY 7, 2020

This week the State Department has facilitated the transportation of nearly 17.8 tons of donated medical supplies to the Chinese people, including masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials. These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people.

Today, the United States government is announcing it is prepared to spend up to $100 million in existing funds to assist China and other impacted countries, both directly and through multilateral organizations, to contain and combat the novel coronavirus. This commitment – along with the hundreds of millions generously donated by the American private sector – demonstrates strong U.S. leadership in response to the outbreak.
