This is an interesting article from the BBC: How the UK’s coronavirus epidemic compares to other countries - BBC News

The data is available, and has been for a long time, so why didn't the UK follow the Korean model as closely as possible? Life here is much more normal than the UK, people are at work (many from home), shops are open and goods/essentials are freely available, people are living life relatively normally which I suspect means a much smaller (although still significant) hit on the economy. It would be harder in Europe due to the open borders, but the UK has no excuse, just bad management - Korea happened 6 weeks before the UK, Italy happened 3 weeks, or so, before the UK, and the Chinese model (I doubt it's entirely true, but) has been there all along. FFS idiots, just follow the Korean approach to managing the virus as closely as possible.

Japan took a similar approach to Korea and has similar success (perhaps more success) (although arguably there situation was easier to manage due to the fact they didn't have a national church of idiots who were highly infected and refused testing...).

Another thing, Korea has its own large successful industries and produces a lot of its own food and goods. I'd say generally speaking that quality of life here, although rather boring, is better for most folks than the UK when considering money available after net salary and accommodation have been deducted. There are no queues for local GP, just turn up and be seen, hospital beds are available without long waiting lists, public transport is far better than the UK and much cheaper - the UK, after Brexit, would de well to look at Korea and follow some of the practices. This Covid-19 seems to show that Europe is not as first world as they think they are, and East Asia is not far behind them (I doubt Japan or Korea or Taiwan or Hong Kong or Singapore are behind Europe at all).

well that as weird, all the piccies changed to some weird shit.

Oh well, in other news a look to see what it would have been like in isolation in the UK in 2005 - all i can say is bleak.

Coronavirus: What if this had happened in 2005?

We are living through the most disruptive period in our nation's history since the end of the war.

I just about remember seeing the newsflash about President Kennedy being shot. The fall of the Berlin wall and 9/11 are seared in my memory. But nothing compares to this pandemic in terms of the impact on everyday life.

But as I spend my day holding video-conferencing sessions with colleagues, FaceTiming my son and granddaughter stuck in a flat across London, and updating my various social networks, one thing strikes me: what if this had happened in 2005, just before the smartphone era began?

Many of the digital tools we are using to keep connected, fed and sane either did not exist back then or were available to only a few.

Facebook was one year old, but was still an American college phenomenon, only arriving at UK universities in the autumn of that year.

Neither Instagram or WhatsApp had been thought of. And talk of "social media" would have drawn puzzled looks, even though many people were rediscovering old school friends via Friends Reunited, which was bought by ITV in 2005.

YouTube was born that year, Twitter would come along the following year, and it was not until 2007 that Apple launched the iPhone.

    Spread of infections continues

Countries around the world have been updating the number of people caught up by the pandemic. Here's a breakdown of some of the latest figures:

Authorities in the Netherlands have reported 1,159 new coronavirus cases and 93 deaths. So far, 9,762 cases have been reported in the country and 639 deaths

Switzerland says deaths from coronavirus have risen to 235 - an increase of 40 in 24 hours. The country has confirmed 13,213 cases

Vietnam's health ministry says there have been a total of 174 confirmed cases and no deaths

In Russia, officials have reported a total of 1,264 cases - an increase of 228 in 24 hours. The country has reported four deaths in total, but these figures have been disputed

The Czech Republic says 2,422 people have tested positive so far, and nine people have died

Belgium has reported 1,850 new cases and 64 deaths in 24 hours. In total, the country has reported 9,134 cases and 353 deaths

Iran says 2,517 people have now died from coronavirus, with 139 fatalities in the past 24 hours. In total, the country has reported 3,076 cases

I think only burning temperatures are going to help the subcontinent.

And Imran Khan, what an asshole he has turned out to be.

Of course the worry is that two of the shitholes have nuclear weapons.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani authorities struggled to limit congregational prayers on Friday with devout Muslims defying government orders to stay home, threatening efforts to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Religious Affairs Minister Noor-ul-Haq Qadri on Thursday capped the maximum number of people at prayers at five.

The announcement came after a meeting of President Arif Alvi with clerics from all religious sects, seeking their help in limiting the size of congregations, which in some cases swells to huge numbers during traditional Friday afternoon prayers.

“We wanted it up to 20, but if the government wants it up to five, I would appeal to the people to please cooperate,” one of the clerics, Maulana Taqi Usmani, told ARY News TV.

Devout Muslims consider congregational prayer at a mosque to be holier than those held elsewhere and they regard it as mandatory to attend Friday afternoon services.

Three of the four Pakistani provinces heeded Qadri’s orders while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the northwest made no decision and people there attended Friday prayers in their hundreds.

The northwestern provincial government did not respond to questions as to why it did not limit the congregation.

Attendance at prayers has dropped significantly across Pakistan but not close to the government’s limit, witnesses told Reuters.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has disregarded questions about the mosque congregations during his interactions with the media.

About 400 people attending mosque in a neighbourhood in southern Karachi city who were angry when police asked the mosque office to close its gates, according to a Reuters photographer present.

A police officer there asked worshippers to go home. “I can’t stop you by force, but I can just request you....to please just realise the situation,” he said through a microphone.

Pakistan, which borders Iran and China, which have suffer two of the world’s most deadly outbreaks of coronavirus, has reported 1,296 infections and nine deaths, the highest number in South Asia.

With a broken healthcare system and a population of 208 million, the world’s sixth largest, Pakistan remains at risk of a wide scale spread of the coronavirus, experts have warned.

Religious extremism could pose a bigger threat to efforts to block the spread of the respiratory disease, officials say.

Villagers in remote conservative areas need to be educated, Mir wais Kaka, a social activist running a coronavirus awareness campaign in the southwestern Zarate district, told Reuters.

“My cousin told me that he would prefer to die (of the virus) if he dies just for saying a prayer (at a mosque).”

I would rather spend money buying ventilators than squandering it on plane tickets for stupid people. They should have returned home weeks ago rather than fucking around on holiday expecting the taxpayer to subsidise their trips home.

Britons in India say they have been left "abandoned" with "no help whatsoever" from the UK government.
The entire country, which has a population of 1.3 billion, was put under lockdown on 23 March with less than four hours notice, in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
A petition to repatriate UK citizens has gained more than 25,000 signatures.
The Foreign Office said it was working "around the clock" to support British travellers and help them return home.
It said it recognised many British nationals had been finding it difficult to return to the UK due to "unprecedented international travel and domestic restrictions".

Russia confirmed 228 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, bringing the country’s official number of cases up to 1,264 and marking the country's largest one-day increase in cases so far.

Russia will close its borders starting on March 30 in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus, a government order published on Saturday said. The measure will come into force at all vehicle, rail and pedestrian checkpoints, and apply to Russia's maritime borders.

Russia’s state carrier Aeroflot is continuing to operate a limited number of flights abroad despite the Russian government’s order to ground all international flights that took effect at midnight Friday.

South Korea out of the top 10 for the first time while the US and Europe continue to impress. I did mention 1 million by the end of April, but maybe the end of March/first couple of days of April - really picking up pace which kinda makes it even harder to believe the China numbers; having said that, this article shows in pictures how seriously the Chinese are now taking it: Coronavirus: China is building a 'fortress' to make sure coronavirus is now a foreign problem | UK News | Sky News

Yup - observation - read into it what you like. The entire world is in a pandemic panic, rightfully so on the basis of the horror stories being broadcast every day or every hour, ever rising numbers of new cases, new deaths, critical care units packed, need more beds and more morgues, more and more countries going into draconian restrictions, lock downs, quarantines, isolation, separations, business shut downs, you name it, it is out there...

and yet, here I/we are, wife and myself, stocked up on face masks and hand sanitizer, clothing in a one time use then immediately launder mode, clean, clean, clean, follow all health safety protocols, keep ourselves isolated to the best of our ability, gonna stay safe and uninfected...

Today, Sunday AM, next door neighbors, in our spaced Moo Baan they are really a down the street neighbor, @ 8 AM pickup truck pulls up, 2 Thai's in front, 4 Thai's in back - ONE is wearing a face mask. The other five are bare faced. Neighbors SUV, four persons get in (two wearing face masks) then off for whatever family outing they have planned. ?????????

Out to speculation concerning their apparent ignorance or disregard of what's happening - now these folk are not uneducated back woods dwelling "I don't know any better" types. These are a successful family of well educated business owner/operators.

It does boggle the mind - perhaps a bit of Thainess karma you get what you deserve philosophical bad things only happen to others going on here...

@bowie - TH is still in the early stages of the lockdown - people have yet to learn.

That was the case 2 weeks ago here in Luzon/ Manila. Soft quarantine, ppl could still go out at scheduled times. Many violaters caught & given stern warnings. First week: the gate to our community was open throughout the day, only closed from 8 pm to 5 am. Second week, gate was open 3 days a week only, at scheduled times. All ppl going out had to wear masks. Now, we're on total lockdown and the gate is closed at all times.

If many ppl in TH violate the quarantine, then it might be similar to PI, since PI is 2 weeks ahead of TH lockdown.

Yeah, but they've still been through trhe Thai "education" system, and have most likely only read 5 books in their adult lives.

Without the need for any public shaming, lobbying or recourse to social media, the German government chartered airlines to collect their citizens if they were stranded abroad and ferried them back home. During the tsunami aftermath the German government immediately processed all their stranded citizens in Phuket and Krabi etc who had lost their passports, clothes and wallets and arranged for charter flights to ferry them home.

The British are essentially shit in comparison, as we already know from the Tory government's woefully laggard response to the threat, a pitifully weak posturing that the WHO slated over a month ago.

And guess what those organising the German charter flights from Phuket did back in 2004? Yep, when they identified spare capacity they took the numerous Brits left kicking their heels, neglected by government inertia and flew them to Frankfurt.

I looked through it. Much is beyond me of course. To note, it is bloody well written. I have seen dozens of technical documents written by Chinese authord. Few are that we done.

The antibody issue is clearly addressed in the first paragraph of page 20, and is exactly the same as i have stated.

You do talk utter shit. Flights never stopped during the tsunami, there were flights out of Phuket the day of the 26th. The Embassy sent down staff to issue emergency travel documents in Phuket.

Not to mention that this was hardly a position of anyone's making.

These idiots put themselves in the situation by not returning to the UK when it was painfully obvious to anyone except those of your intellect that India wasn't the place to be for a medical emergency.

So fuck 'em. Hunker down, smoke some weed and enjoy your free holiday. Your friends can Western Union your dole money for you.
