For those of you who live outside Thailand and are experiencing a sensible quarantine regime rooted in sound scientific theory translated into responsible action by a government acting responsibly for the common good within national boundaries, you may wish to learn about how things currently stand here in the Chonburi chanwat.

As you will know the junta has closed down places of entertainment, bars, beer bars, karaokes, shopping malls and restaurants but the latter may still operate but only to provide takeaway food to be consumed off the premises. This is of course critical here in Thailand where urban dwellers live within a culture of eating out, either at street venues or in food courts and rarely cook at home. So, this is the regime within the Bangkok Metropolitan area and home to, some say, 12 million inhabitants although the hinterland includes another four million or so who are also living in that quarantine regime.

    But not Chonburi.

Here it seems there is a different strain of the virus spreading and one that is apparently not affected by a more relaxed interpretation of the WHO's recommendations for social distancing.

Here in Pattaya restaurants and restaurant bars may stay open as long as they wish with the condition that patrons do not dine within a metre of each other. And there it is. And who enforces this regime? Well, no-one really given that the restaurant furniture is no different to what it was before the pandemic struck and customers are free to take their seats at whichever tables take their fancy.

And why is this? Well, as we all know the government of Chonburi has long cherished a tradition of autonomy from Bangkok reflecting the somewhat colourful and unconventional nature of what passes for local government and one that historically has taken the view that commerce and its benefits is of more pressing concern than any other issue.

If it is right that this virus does not spread so keenly within a hot and humid environment then we here in Pattaya may yet still survive unscathed by the ravages inflicted on the European victims but if that perception is wrong then we shall all know just why our city has become a hotspot for cluster infections.

Incidentally, shopping mall food outlets are closed, but all the other businesses appear to be open.

    Ah well.

The wingman and I have adopted our own regime commensurate with the WHO recommended practices and avoid any gathering, anywhere and dine chez nous.

New Immune Cell on the Block During Viral Lung Infections

Scientists have identified a novel group of immune cells in the lungs that are associated with the control of inflammation during viral infections, like influenza or possibly coronavirus. This discovery may help to advance the development of therapeutics to treat inflammation-related lung conditions such as bronchitis, influenza and potentially even COVID-19.

Macrophages are an important subset of phagocytic immune cells found throughout the body that form part of our body’s first line of defense against invading foreign material, including bacteria and viruses. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are a well-known inhabitant of the lungs and are responsible for direct clearance of viruses. This new group of immune cells, identified in the lungs of mice, are a distinct group of macrophages, dubbed NAMs (nerve and airway associated macrophages), that appear instead to moderate inflammation in the lungs during viral infection. Inflammation is an important part of the innate immune response to potentially harmful foreign material and includes the production of regulatory molecules, such as cytokines, and recruitment of immune cells to the affected locations. If inflammation goes unchecked, however, it can be damaging to the body and therefore requires tight regulation.

The study was published today in Science Immunology.

The team, including scientists Columbia University Medical Center, New York University Langone Health, Uconn Health and the University of Bordeaux, studied the location and role of these novel immune cells. Professor Kamal M. Khanna, corresponding author of the paper, commented “Emerging evidence suggests that tissue-resident macrophages play critical roles in maintaining immune and tissue homeostasis in mucosal organs under inflammatory conditions, such as during infections. Although studies primarily using bone marrow-derived macrophages have been very informative about the function of macrophages in response to specific stimuli in vitro, these roles remain to be elucidated among tissue-resident macrophage subsets in the context of infection in the local tissue environment in vivo. This was one of the main goals of our study.”

Using live cell imaging in live mice, they found that NAMs cluster primarily around the sympathetic pulmonary nerves and airways. With the use of mouse models unable to produce either AMs or NAMs, they were able to demonstrate that NAMs were embryonically derived, self-renewing, and altogether developmentally distinct from AMs. Unlike AMs, the development of NAMs requires colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) but not granulocyte-macrophage CSF (GM-CSF) on which AM development and maturation is highly dependent.

Population and single cell transcriptome analysis revealed that NAMs were distinct from other macrophage groups resident in the lungs at the transcriptional level too. The analysis also indicated that NAMs highly transcribed immunoregulatory genes under steady-state and inflammatory conditions. “I think what excites me most about our findings is the fact that we have identified a unique subset of the macrophage population (a critical cell type of the innate immune system) that we know very little about. Our results provide essential insights into the development and maintenance, and functions of a poorly understood subset of resident macrophages in the lung” said Professor Khanna.

Mice were experimentally infected with influenza virus to examine the role of NAMs during infection. This revealed that NAMs proliferated robustly following infection in the wild-type mice. However, in those unable to produce NAMs, infection induced an overzealous immune response with excessive production of inflammatory cytokines and immune cell infiltration into tissues. “We find that, at least with influenza, AMs help clear the infection, while NAMs help regulate and suppress infection-induced inflammation”. This transcriptionally and developmentally distinct subset of airway-associated macrophages are therefore important in maintaining immune and tissue homeostasis, information that provides insights for future therapeutic developments, including those against COVID-19.

“As we come to understand more about how NAMs regulate infection-induced inflammation we can target these macrophages to help resolve damaging inflammation caused by respiratory viral infections such as COVID-19.” He concluded “Future studies will examine how to augment their function or induce their proliferation to increase their numbers at the right time during viral infections”.

RIO DE JANEIRO/SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro on Friday cast doubt on Sao Paulo’s death toll from the coronavirus outbreak and accused the state governor of manipulating the numbers for political ends, without giving evidence for his claims.

Bolsonaro’s accusations were the latest broadside in an ugly battle with Brazil’s governors, who have chafed at the president’s view that protecting the economy takes priority over social distancing measures to combat the spread of the highly contagious virus.

Following the advice of public health experts, the vast majority of the country’s 26 governors have banned non-essential commercial activities and public services to contain the outbreak in their states.

“I’m sorry, some people will die, they will die, that’s life,” Bolsonaro said in a television interview on Friday night. “You can’t stop a car factory because of traffic deaths.”

Bolsonaro said that in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s economic powerhouse, the death toll seemed “too large.” Sao Paulo has the most cases and deaths so far of coronavirus in Brazil, at 1,223 cases and 68 deaths.

“We need to look at what is happening there, this cannot be a numbers game to favor political interests,” Bolsonaro said.

Earlier on Friday, Sao Paulo Governor Joao Doria, a former Bolsonaro ally who many expect to be a rival in the 2022 presidential election, accused Bolsonaro of promoting “disinformation” by launching a TV ad campaign criticizing the restrictions, featuring the slogan “#BrazilCannotStop.”

The slogan is similar to a campaign in Milan before deaths in Italy soared.

At least 10 banks have announced they will close their branches on Saturday and Sunday to help prevent the spread of coronavirus ahead of the registration for aid for self-employed people.

Commercial banks that made the announcements as of Saturday morning are Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Siam Commercial Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, TMB Bank, Thanachart Bank, UOB, Kiatnakin, LH Bank and CIMB Thai. The state-owned GH Bank also closed on Saturday.

Three other state banks made the same announcements earlier. They were the Government Savings Bank (GSB), Krungthai Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.

Clients are encouraged to use electronic transactions and mobile apps during the closures.

The banks decided to close their branches after long queues formed at some state banks on Friday. Large crowds were reported at GSB branches after news that the government would transfer money to help self-employed people affected by temporary business closure orders by authorities in the capital and several provinces.

Google Bans Infowars Android App Over Coronavirus Claims

ON FRIDAY, GOOGLE removed the Infowars Android app from its Play Store, extinguishing one of the last mainstream strongholds of infamous conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The takedown comes on the heels of a video, posted in the Infowars app last week and viewed by WIRED, in which Jones disputed the need for social distancing, shelter in place, and quarantine efforts meant to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Google confirmed to WIRED that it removed the app on Friday. The app had more than 100,000 downloads according to Google Play's published metrics, and was rated "E10+," meaning safe for all users 10 and older. The Infowars app sold products like supplements and protein powder, broadcast The Alex Jones Show live, and posted videos and articles from Jones and others.

"Now more than ever, combating misinformation on the Play Store is a top priority for the team," a Google spokesperson told WIRED. "When we find apps that violate Play policy by distributing misleading or harmful information, we remove them from the store."

Alex Jones and Infowars did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In the video in question, Jones said that "everybody dies under the new world order except maybe one tenth of one percent that believe they're going to merge with machines and have made deals with this inter-dimensional thing that gave them all the technology ... You can't make a deal with these aliens, OK, that the Bible tells you about and ever get off the planet."

    Toss to Bergamo

A motorized convoy of the Russian army is moving along the highway in the Bergamo area, while the Italian army is conducting heavy defensive battles with the coronavirus in Lombardy.

The Wehrmacht abandoned the Italian allies and retreated behind the alpine passes, where he holds the defense.

    - How big is Russian aid to Italy?

    - Russia provides Italy with special technical and expert assistance, sending military virologists and RCB specialists to the affected country with the appropriate material and technical support.

Moreover, according to the statements of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the allocated resources to help Italy are not critical for the general pool of resources at the disposal of the Ministry of Defense.

Accordingly, we see that Italy provides metered assistance at the request of the Italian government. It is important to understand that this step also has a political dimension, as the request for assistance comes from a NATO country.

    - They even tried to prevent Russia from helping Italy, but to no avail ...

    - A number of NATO countries actually tried to interfere with Italy's assistance. For example, Russian military transport aircraft delivering military specialists and equipment to Italy flew to the Apennines not directly through Poland, but by making a detour through the Mediterranean Sea.
The help itself was condemned in the globalist media, where Russia was accused of “taking advantage of the situation” and Italy of “being indiscriminate in matters of assistance”.
Of course, the absence or delay of assistance from the EU and NATO countries is safely dropping. Of course, the Russian propaganda line to Europe received powerful help in the form of the Italian operation of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which is popular both in Italy itself (where the circles that advocate lifting European sanctions against Russia are strong enough) and among EU citizens who are concerned about insufficient measures undertaken by the European government in the fight against coronavirus.

    - What will Russia get by helping Italy?

    - First of all, we can say that Russia is carrying out a humanitarian operation, helping ordinary people who are in trouble. The manifestation of solidarity, along with the efforts of China and Cuba, puts Russia in a more advantageous moral position than those countries that operate on the principle of "save who can."

In the other hand, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation does not even hide that, by providing assistance, the military expects to gain experience in combating the virus on the “European theater of operations” and to use the experience gained both to improve the training of specialists and to apply within Russia if the situation with coronavirus in the country complicated.

In addition, increasing Russia's prestige in Italy, Moscow expects that, under certain circumstances, this assistance will influence the decision of the Italian government on the issue of sanctions. At the moment, it is already experiencing serious pressure from the factions representing the industrial North, which is interested in lifting the sanction.

Thus, Russia solves various tasks in the Italian operation - humanitarian, military, political. How successfully they will be resolved, let’s look at the results.

    - Will this noble gesture affect the situation inside Russia?

    - If the epidemic situation in the country worsens, the resources of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation will begin to be more actively involved in stopping the consequences of the epidemic in those regions that will be at risk.

At the same time, military laboratories are already actively working on testing for coronavirus and developing a vaccine. As needed, more substantial resources may be involved.

If the situation becomes completely critical and all resources are required to be used, there is no problem recalling specialists from Italy to Russia. This is a matter of several days and 10-15 flights of military transport aviation.

So the very topic of “weakening the resource potential of the Russian Federation” looks far-fetched in this case.

    - Will Italy be grateful for the assistance provided?

    - The service already provided does not cost anything. But here it is necessary to separate the simple Italians and the Italian elite. Among ordinary citizens of Italy, the popularity of the Russian Federation will obviously increase, but after stabilization of the situation, the Italian leadership may well take the position of “Thank you for your help, but European solidarity and all that”, continuing to follow in the wake of the anti-Russian course. This has happened more than once. And so it will be more than once.

But on the other hand, this is not a reason not to show solidarity, as China itself does, demonstrating that such an approach is more correct than the ultra-mercantilist approach advocated by neoliberals.

In any case, we know that we personally did the right thing and helped those who were abandoned by those who should have taken care of them. A question of gratitude, a matter of no small importance, but not of paramount importance.
From my point of view, China, Russia and Cuba are doing the right thing, helping the Italians, even if the Italian government subsequently prefers to forget about this help.

With a highly infectious viral disease like COVID-19, no natural immunity in the population and no vaccine to inoculate people against coronavirus, the only way to stop the spread is to keep people away from each other.

According to the simulation, if Australia sees 80 per cent compliance with advice on 'physical distancing', the spread of COVID-19 could be controlled within 13 weeks.

^ But study author Mikhail Prokopenko from the University of Sydney explains the results are very different if that figure falls even a little bit.

"At 70 per cent and below, it just does not work," Professor Prokopenko says. "It does not lead to reductions of incidence and prevalence."

    Ireland is going full lockdown.

Ireland has been put under similar lockdown measures to the UK following three more coronavirus-related deaths.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said residents should stay home until at least 12 April unless they are buying groceries, attending medical appointments or collecting medication, getting brief exercise or making essential family visits.

Almost all shops will be told to close and all gatherings outside of families will be banned.

Estimates Show Wuhan Death Toll Far Higher Than Official Figure

As authorities lifted a two-month coronavirus lockdown in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, residents said they were growing increasingly skeptical that the figure of some 2,500 deaths in the city to date was accurate.

Since the start of the week, seven large funeral homes in Wuhan have been handing out the cremated remains of around 500 people to their families every day, suggesting that far more people died than ever made the official statistics.

"It can't be right ... because the incinerators have been working round the clock, so how can so few people have died?" an Wuhan resident surnamed Zhang told RFA on Friday.

"They started distributing ashes and starting interment ceremonies on
    Monday," he said.

Seven funeral homes currently serve Wuhan -- a huge conurbation of three cities: Hankou, Wuchang and Hanyang.

Social media users have been doing some basic math to figure out their daily capacity, while the news website Caixin.com reported that 5,000 urns had been delivered by a supplier to the Hankou Funeral Home in one day alone -- double the official number of deaths.

Some social media posts have estimated that all seven funeral homes in Wuhan are handing out 3,500 urns every day in total.

Funeral homes have informed families that they will try to complete cremations before the traditional grave-tending festival of Qing Ming on April 5, which would indicate a 12-day process beginning on March 23.

Such an estimate would mean that 42,000 urns would be given out during that time.

    Various calculations

Another popular estimate is based on the cremation capacity of the funeral homes, which run a total of 84 furnaces with a capacity over 24 hours of 1,560 urns city-wide, assuming that one cremation takes one hour.

This calculation results in an estimated 46,800 deaths.

A resident of Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital, said most people there now believe that more than 40,000 people died in the city before and during the lockdown.

"Maybe the authorities are gradually releasing the real figures, intentionally or unintentionally, so that people will gradually come to accept the reality," the resident, who gave only his surname Mao, said.

A source close to the provincial civil affairs bureau said many people had died at home, without being diagnosed with, or treated for, COVID-19.

The source said any talk of the true number of deaths in Wuhan was very sensitive, but that the authorities do likely know the real figure.

"Every funeral home reports data on cremations directly to the authorities twice daily," the source said. "This means that each funeral home only knows how many cremations it has conducted, but not the situation at the other funeral homes."

The source said Wuhan saw 28,000 cremations in the space of a single month, suggesting that the online estimates over a two-and-a-half month period weren't excessive.

Wuhan resident Sun Linan said relatives of those who died are now forming long lines outside funeral homes to collect their loved ones' ashes.

"It has already begun," Sun said on Thursday. "There were people lining up in Biandanshan Cemetery yesterday, and a lot of people forming lines today at Hankou Funeral Home."

    Hush money

Wuhan resident Chen Yaohui told RFA that city officials have been handing out 3,000 yuan in "funeral allowances" to the families of the dead in exchange for their silence.

"There have been a lot of funerals in the past few days, and the authorities are handing out 3,000 yuan in hush money to families who get their loved ones' remains laid to rest ahead of Qing Ming," he said, in a reference to the traditional grave tending festival on April 5.

"It's to stop them keening [a traditional expression of grief]; nobody's allowed to keen after Qing Ming has passed," Chen said.

The son of deceased COVID-10 patient Hu Aizhen said he had been told to collect his mother's ashes by the local neighborhood committee.

"The local committee told me they are now handling funerals, but I don't want to do it right now," the man, surnamed Ding, told RFA.

"There are too many people doing it right now."

Chen said nobody in the city believes the official death toll.

"The official number of deaths was 2,500 people ... but before the epidemic began, the city's crematoriums typically cremated around 220 people a day," he said.

"But during the epidemic, they transferred cremation workers from around China to Wuhan keep cremate bodies around the clock," he said.

A resident surnamed Gao said the city's seven crematoriums should have a capacity of around 2,000 bodies a day if they worked around the clock.

"Anyone looking at that figure will realize, anyone with any ability to think," Gao said. "What are they talking about [2,535] people?"

"Seven crematoriums could get through more than that [in a single day]."
