Fears of global condom shortage amid coronavirus

There are fears about the long-term implications of a global condom shortage after the world's largest manufacturer was forced to stop production due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Karex Berhad's three factories in Malaysia have been shut for 10 days already, meaning there are already 100 million fewer condoms, the company's chief executive Goh Miah Kiat told news agency Reuters.

The company, which produces one in five of the world's condoms, is now appealing to the Malaysian government for a partial exemption from a nationwide lockdown.

The country is the worst affected in South-East Asia, with 2,161 coronavirus infections and 26 deaths.

But without being able to reopen, Mr Goh said there would be a "global shortage" of condoms, which could potentially impact "a lot of humanitarian programmes... for months".

What's more, he added, demand "is still very strong", which is no bad thing "given that at this point in time people are probably not planning to have children".

"It’s not the time, with so much uncertainty.”

Karex supplies companies like Durex and organisations like the NHS and the UN Population Fund.

181 deaths in the UK in the last 24 hours due to covid-19.....and 759 total.

and bojo was out shaking hands all month....after shaking hands with 'everyone' in a hospital that had covid-19 patients.

there seems little doubt that he's now the poster child for covidiocy.

The agreed deputy to stand in for an absent BoJo is the current Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, better known as Raab C Brexit, a doctrinaire and rabid Brexit nutcase so fucking stupid he didn't know where Dover was and that ti was the major export portal for over 3 million lorries driving from the UK to the EU annually. He was briefly the chief negotiator for May but resigned because everyone in Brussels laughed at him because he knew nothing and was a silly wanker who kept asking stupid questions. The EU negotiators thought he was ill.

He is an idiot who thinks leadership is all about looking tough and spouting cliches.

    ^ jesus wept,

Will someone explain to Reachy that the directives enacted by the PM are driven by advice from his Medical Experts. BoJo ain't going to start claiming to be a medical expert in much the same way you aren't an epidemiologist. Honestly who let the doggie out of SC - someone fetch the leash.

^^No, the herd immunity proponent was his Goebbels Svengali spinmeister, Dommo Cummings, who then realised that a hit rate of 50,000 aged and weak citizens was perhaps not such a good idea in a system dependent on democratic elections.

One is currently praying that the virus is now percolating on the bastard's pharynx and he will be in the same ward as his boss when the ventilators are unplugged.

I have noticed that the ratio of Dead/(Dead + Recovered), which I think would probably be the most accurate mortality rate metric, has risen steadily over the past 2 weeks looking at the numbers on the Johns Hopkins site

It was tracking along at about 6-7% for ages and then steadily rose during the last 2 weeks and is now about 16%

That ratio is not documented on the site but I was mentally calculating it each day

So the chances of walking away from a dose seem to have diminished significantly

    Kinda worrying

Maybe it takes longer to die than to recover though, so maybe we were never going to see the true mortality rate until the deaths started to pile up

^ Loops i think its to do with lack of testing and they only test those who display significant symptoms - that folks is probably the last sensible thing i have to contribute until my liver filters this cider.

Yeah, and right now the rate is going up so fast. Two weeks ago the infections were much less than now, so that is what we are seeing mortality from. Now, with 600,000 plus cases, the mortality rate in two weeks will be telling, likely around 60,000. We should be "rarin to go by Easter" as Trump says. Go being a bit of a final word . . .

Two sailors onboard the Nimitz class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which forward-deployed in Japan and presently pier-side there, have tested positive for the COVID-19 novel coronavirus. This comes just a day after the U.S. Navy announced it had quarantined the entire crew of another aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, on their ship in port in Guam after a number of sailors contracted the virus.

Alabama. Run by dumbarse trumpanzees for dumbarse trumpanzees.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) said during a new conference on Thursday that she would not issue a shelter in place order that 21 other states have enacted to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

“Y’all, we are not Louisiana, we are not New York state, we are not California,” Ivey told a reporter who had asked about a potential order. “And right now is not the time to order people to shelter in place.”

The governor asserted that businesses need to stay open to provide food, medical supplies and jobs.

“We’ve got have all the materials that are needed to keep Alabamians working as much as we can,” she said.

Ivey’s comments echoed President Donald Trump’s insistence that people ought to go back to work to save the economy, even though medical experts have warned that doing so would put lives at risk.

Last week, Ivey had issued a “stay at home if possible” directive, which she defined as advisement for Alabamians to “limit interaction with people as much as you can.” She has also closed the state’s schools.

As of Friday morning, there are 538 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and three deaths in Alabama,
per the state’s department of health.

Oh dear, what are the chinkies hiding this time?

China's film regulators has slammed the brakes on plans to gradually reopen the country's cinemas.

Over 600 movie theaters across China were given the green light to reopen their doors over the past week, but Beijing's Film Bureau put out a notice late Friday ordering all theaters to go back into shutdown.

No official explanation for the sudden reversal was provided. Industry insiders instantly began speculating that the government was worried about a potential second wave of coronavirus infections.

The cast of Contagion have made some public service announcements.

"With the goal of sharing evidence-based information about the coronavirus (COVID-19), the cast of Contagion in collaboration with scientists from Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health and Participant unveiled a series of PSA videos on Friday."

Since you can only post one at a time, here they are in four posts:
