In fact, it should be compulsory at all airports and public transport to wear masks. A % of all the people are likely to have it without knowing, so it's everyone's social responsibility to support the health services and slow the spread down.

In Korea, pretty much a month to go from close to zero confirmed cases to approaching 10,000 cases. Of course, hundreds if not thousands of cases were already 'in the wild' by early February - they just hadn't been detected and/or tested for.

The chart below shows a 10 fold increase in a little over two weeks - from smallish numbers to out of control numbers.





The Global picture is looking rather red...



If the Korean curve is followed then the 126,000 total can become 500,000 or a million very quickly. I tend to use the Korean figures because they are the most complete and transparent that are easily available.

Even the WHO seem cabable of understanding that graphic, so there's a small chance Mr Sausage might...

Looks like a fair enough estimate, doesn't look like much is gonna stop it in the next year.

Just hope that both my parents in their 70's will be okay in the coming years.

I think it took about 18-20 months for the SARS vaccine, by which time it had come and was already dying off. That was more than 15 years ago, during which time not only tech and knowledge have advanced significantly but lessons were learned and preps for future outbreaks were improved so as not to be caught out next time totally unprepared.

While it took the early weeks for the intl community to realise that this is the one they were prepping for, plus an unknown number of weeks that the Chinese tried to smother it, now every major research unit worldwide is on the case, and hopefully sharing data. Last month, not sure if it was the WHO or a national bio agency that estimated the vaccine time to be in the range of 2-3 months, possibly 4, and without any info to contradict this it should be developed soon.

As someone said, this too will pass, and let's see how they handle the next one.

How many "mild" cases of the sniffles and a slight fever are there? How many folk are infected but exhibit no symptoms at all?

How many infected folk have been carrying and transmitting the virus without knowing and for how long?

How long has this corona virus been undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed because, a) nobody knew about it? and/or b) a "test kit" was not available?

How many of these corona virus infections are mild and of no real consequence to a healthy adult?


Now WHO has finally declared the prevalence of these corona virus infections a "Pandemic". And, yes, it appears to be spreading rapidly - yet, maybe it isn't spreading - perhaps it existed, undiagnosed and untested for a considerable time?

Many questions - few solid answers - hence the uncertainty.

Silver lining - perhaps, just perhaps, the corona virus pandemic will significantly increase the "work from home" scenarios that many businesses abhor due to the lack of direct supervision of their employees. Hopefully, many folk will no longer be required to commute to and from their workplaces and can, in fact, telecommute. Thereby decreasing humanities global carbon footprint and reversing global warming.

Maybe the Corona virus will save the planets bacon. You can only hope.

^few months? animal models for previous coronavirus vaccines developed serious respiratory side effects.. not something you would want to rush through. Most people in clinical say 18months if you are lucky

Well that's gonna happen to your health service soon, so when you wanna take your kids to the local hospital, there simply won't be any doctors or nurses available to see them. Haas now has four team members in self-isolation after they showed signs of the coronavirus upon landing in Australia earlier this week.
On Wednesday it emerged that two of Haas’ staff were being tested for the virus while one team member from McLaren was also in self-isolation.
While both teams, and the paddock as a whole, waited for those results two more of Haas staff began showing signs.
They too have been tested and are in self-isolation at their hotel as they all wait for the results.

Mate, if I were you I'd be on that flight to Berlin than onwards to England - probably a lot higher risk of catching it now on the flight/in Berlin than UB, but UB is a small city and the virus will spread very fast - the virus has clearly been everywhere for a month or so ahead of numbers coming up by testing, so it's not as if it isn't in UB already.

It will spread and medical services in UB are not the best. Get back to the UK, have a 3 month holiday.

I'm lucky that medical care is good in Korea (our fatality rates of this virus are just about the lowest), but many Asian countries are not so good.

With the earlier reports that people can be reinfected then it's all a bit of a worry until a vaccine comes along. Jabir mentioned 3-4 months, but I've seen several medical experts say it'll be a year to 18 months. Who knows?

It normally takes a year of testing to ensure there are no side effects. That time can be reduced dramatically if urgency takes priority.
