I agree, if Africa gets hit then we are in a very serious situation.

The "press" do report they are preparing what limited resources they have, but as of yesterday have not reported any infected, diagnosed or deaths from this particular virus.

How they determine what cause a persons death in Africa maybe the question to ask.

"Agency's chief calls for evidence-based decisions in countries' responses to virus


The head of the World Health Organization said on Monday there was no need for measures that "unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade" in trying to halt the spread of a novel coronavirus that has killed more than 400 people in China.

"We call on all countries to implement decisions that are evidence-based and consistent," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Geneva.

Meanwhile, WHO's Director of Global Infectious Hazard Preparedness, Sylvie Briand, told reporters on Tuesday that the outbreak of the virus does not constitute a "pandemic".

"Currently we are not in a pandemic, we are at a phase where we have an epidemic of novel coronavirus with multiple foci and we try to extinguish the transmission in each of these foci," Briand said, while stressing the importance in tackling misinformation and rumors surrounding the virus

China was using the right strategy of focusing its efforts on the hardest-hit places and slowing the spread, said Tedros, lauding the country for "protecting the Chinese people and protecting the rest of the world".

While warning that the situation could still worsen, Tedros said: "The chances of getting this going to anywhere outside China is very low, and even in China, when you go to other provinces, it's very low."

China's delegate to the WHO executive board denounced countries that had denied entry to people holding passports issued in Hubei province－home to Wuhan, the center of the outbreak－or had denied visas to applicants in China and canceled flights to and from China.

"All these measures are seriously against recommendations by the WHO," said Li Song, China's ambassador for disarmament at the United Nations in Geneva.

WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said on Monday that the organization could soon send a team of experts to China to investigate the outbreak, "possibly this week".

Colin McIff, a senior official at the US Department of Health and Human Services, told Reuters in Geneva on Monday that "conversations are ongoing" about US medical experts joining the WHO-led mission.

Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a teleconference on Monday: "We have folks ready to go to China as soon as that offer is finalized."

The administration of President Donald Trump announced a public health emergency on Friday amid the spread of the virus. The US recorded its 10th and 11th cases of coronavirus after a couple from central California fell ill after the husband's trip to Hubei province.

Vladimir Voronkov, UN undersecretary-general for counterterrorism, said that sports security and health security are both interconnected issues. He expressed his feeling of solidarity with China, saying the Chinese government has taken measures and he believes that China will overcome the difficulties in a short period of time."

Update on the cruise ship stuck in Japan.


Since arriving at the Japanese port of Yokohama, the Diamond Princess has been quarantined at sea while all passengers and crew on board undergo health screenings. The 20 people who tested positive for the newly identified virus have been taken ashore to a hospital in the coastal prefecture of Kanagawa, according to a statement from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.


"Quarantine of the cruise ship continues to be implemented," the ministry said.


A spokesperson for Princess Cruises, which operates the ship, said that those who tested positive include three Japanese guests, three guests from Hong Kong, two Australian guests, one American guest and one crew member from the Philippines. There were 2,666 guests and 1,045 crew members aboard the Diamond Princess. Approximately half the guests are from Japan, according to the cruise line spokesperson. There are over 400 passengers from the U.S. on the ship, according to the spokesperson.



The Diamond Princess will remain under quarantine in Yokohama with everyone on board for at least 14 days, as required by the Japanese health ministry, the Princess Cruises spokesperson said.


"The ship plans to go out to sea to perform normal marine operations including, but not limited to, the production of fresh water and ballast operations before proceeding alongside in Yokohama where food, provisions, and other supplies will be brought on board," the spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday night. "Guests will continue to be provided complimentary internet and telephone to use in order to stay in contact with their family and loved ones, and the ship’s crew is working to keep all guests comfortable."


"Princess Cruises will continue to fully cooperate with and follow the instructions of global medical authorities and the Japanese government," the spokesperson added.


The California-based company has already already cancelled the next two Diamond Princess cruises departing from Yokohama.


American author Gay Courter and her husband Phil, who are among those on board the quarantined ship, told ABC News they have been "confined" to their room, a mini suite, and the crew has halted room service.
"As far as jail cells go, it's pretty elegant," Courter said in an interview Tuesday. "It'd be a lot more pleasant if we can get food.""Right now, the ship is in crisis mode," she added. "This is very serious and scary."

Global businesses are continuing to suffer. It didn't seem like a big deal, but it is now. Most high volume manufacturing firms have used all their inventory and depleted WIP. It was announced Hyundai, GM, BMW and others are considering plant shut downs as the virus continues to spread and nothing is going in and out of China's ports. Numerous cargo ships are idling and anchored outside the port area waiting for dock workers to return to not only offload, but load and refuel. There is nobody there. Depending on destination, most sea shipments take 18 to 28 days. So even if they get back to work on Feb 10th, companies that are material dry will not see anything for at least 3 weeks after it has set to sea.

I was informed by a few companies in Hubei that build product for us that workers will return to work on Feb 10th but my hunch is that will not happen as the infection numbers continue to climb and death toll number grows.

Two newborn babies in Wuhan, China, have been infected with the coronavirus, according to China's state broadcaster CCTV. The youngest baby was diagnosed at just 30 hours old.




The baby's mother was also infected with the virus, and CCTV suggested that "there may be mother-infant transmission," where the mother passes the virus on to the baby in utero.

Chinese doctor who sounded the alarm on coronavirus dies of illness


In December, Dr. Li Wenliang was threatened by the government after he publicly voiced concerns about the new coronavirus before it was identified. He died Thursday of the illness, according to China's state-run media.


Wenliang, a 34-year-old ophthalmologist, warned fellow clinicians in a group chat in December about a SARS-like illness popping up in one of the main hospitals in the city of Wuhan, BBC News reports. He was then told by government officials to stop "making false comments."


BBC News said officials visited Wenliang and accused him of having "severely disturbed the social order." They presented him with an official letter, stating: "We solemnly warn you: If you keep being stubborn, with such impertinence, and continue this illegal activity, you will be brought to justice — is that understood?" He signed it.

Reporting on his death, state media hailed him as a "whistleblower", having originally said he was "rumour-mongering".



There has been an outpouring of grief on Weibo, with many thanking him, saying he is owed an apology and hoping the Chinese government will learn from him.
