Cebu Pacific airline has cancelled all flights to Mainland China. Flights to HK & Macau have been reduced.

The 38 y.o. Chinese woman from Wuhan who itested positive for the virus (Patient#1) took a flight from Wuhan to HK. Then HK to Cebu & Cebu to Dumaguete. Airplanes used in those flights have been pulled out & are being disinfected.

She spent 3-4 days at a Dumaguete resort, then flew Dumaguete - Manila via Philippine Airlines (PAL). Said aircraft is also being disinfected. PAL has also reduced flights to the mainland.

Several senators/congress ppl want to stop all flights coming from China. Stop all nationalities from coming in from China (not just Chinese). That the virus is asymptomatic & one can be a catrier, such as the Germany case. And that the virus does not discriminate whom it will affect.

Meanwhile, this article mentions that Patients 1 & 2 in Germany have minor conditions only, which is good to hear. Both are relatively young & healthy.

Thais in Wuhan to be evacuated by air

BANGKOK (NNT) - Air Asia has been readied to evacuate Thai nationals without fare payment from Wuhan city ; meanwhile a total of 135 Thais have asked to return home from China.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon confirmed today that the Ministry of Public Health has closely followed the coronavirus situation and noted it has not adversely intensified and that the Chinese authorities have now allowed the Thais to be evacuated from Wuhan.

Consular Department Director General Chatri Atchananan said a total of 135 Thais have requested a return home from China and Thai authorities have prepared travel papers for them. But the authorities cannot assure every one of the 135 Thais, that they will be returned in the face of the screening process and the requirement for complete documentation.

Deputy Prime Minister/Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed the Thais will be evacuated from Wuhan by air with medical staff and officials having been already prepared. Now only the date has to be fixed by Chinese authorities for the planned evacuation of Thai personnel to proceed.

Probably been mentioned before but - From the CDC concerning the 1918 flu pandemic:

It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States.

    And long before air travel.

    Algebraic calc - 500M X 3 = 1500M 50M/1500M = 3.3% of world's population died

    14,010 cases confirmed.
    304 deaths
    331 recovered

At least the recovered number has grown.

At Central in Chiang Rai yesterday, hardly a Chinese tourist to be found. Nor the throngs of tourists at the usual sightseeing places. Kinda nice.

    A little perspective might help.

The CDC estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick during the 2018-2019 flu season, 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died. That’s fairly on par with a typical season, and well below the CDC’s 2017-2018 estimates of 48.8 million illnesses, 959,000 hospitalizations and 79,400 deaths.

Maybe countries should be banning flights from the U.S.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/healt...e99_story.html

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 8.6 million to 12 million people have visited health-care providers complaining of influenza-like symptoms, such as fever, coughing, sneezing and aches since the flu season began Oct. 1. As many as 310,000 have been hospitalized, and 68 children have died.

On the CDC’s map of flu activity, most of the nation is a deep red, indicating the highest level of “influenza-like illness” activity.

The entire school district serving Knoxville and Knox County, Tenn., which has 57,800 students, shut down this past week because of flu circulating among students and staff. In Cuyahoga County, Ohio, which includes Cleveland, 218 people have died and 2,500 have shown up in emergency rooms in the city alone, said Merle Gordon, director of the city’s Department of Public Health. In Arkansas, nine school districts are closed, 33 people have died and hospitalizations have increased sharply in the past two weeks.

“We’re being hit right now, a lot of communities at the same time,” said Jennifer Dillaha, medical director for immunizations and outbreak response for the Arkansas Department of Health.

And now, for an encore from the country that keeps on giving:

BEIJING (Reuters): China reported an outbreak of a highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 bird flu at a farm in Shaoyang city of the southern province of Hunan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said on Saturday (Feb 1).
The case occurred on a farm with 7,850 chickens, 4,500 of which have died of the bird flu.

The authorities have culled 17,828 poultry following the outbreak. - Reuters

First death outside of China due to Ncov. The patient was the BF of the 1st identified patient, Patient #1. Both took flights from Wuhan to HK, then HK-Cebu, Cebu-Dumaguete. Stayed in Dumaguete for a few days, then flew Dumaguete- Manila. He got admitted to hospital on Jan 25. He later died of complications due to pneumonia. News is from the FB page of the Phil Red Cross, sent to me by a colleague. I took screenshots and will post them here.

The recovery rates are still high, and survival rate is ~97%. The German patients are doing well. So I remain optimistic.

Should I be more worried than I am?
So far I have managed to survive through Mad Monkey Cow Disease, Ebola, the Swine Flu, Bird Flu, HIV, Aids, SARS, MERS, NBC, CBS, Ch 3, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, enforced vaccinations, drought, floods, Bush & Obama, 3 coups, Thai roads and to date, Trump, TVF, Agenda 21, Greta Thunberg & Global warming, all is well - so far, just sitting back watching the hysteria.

Well you know what they say, if you can keep your head while all those around you are panicking you obviously don't understand the situation.

Flights from UB to China and Hong Kong now seem to have been suspended, I too am starting to think that perhaps I should be taking it more seriously. For the time being there are flights to South Korea, Thailand and Russia, so it's not like I'm stuck here.

Might have a meeting tomorrow, but might not as I'm not sure anyone is really supposed to even be on any school campus until March 2. Online lessons are going surprisingly smoothly, so at least I am not dying of boredom. I suspect that it about to get a whole lot crazier

"CDC estimates* that, from October 1, 2019, throughJanuary 25, 2020, there have been:

    19,000,000 – 26,000,000 flu illnesses

    8,600,000 – 12,000,000
    flu medical visits

    180,000 – 310,000
    flu hospitalizations

    10,000 – 25,000 flu deaths

*Because influenza surveillance does not capture all cases of flu that occur in the U.S., CDC provides these estimated ranges to better reflect the larger burden of influenza. These estimates are calculated based on CDC’s weekly influenza surveillance data and are preliminary.

This web page provides weekly, preliminary estimates of the cumulative in-season numbers of flu illnesses, medical visits, hospitalizations, and deaths in the United States. CDC does not know the exact number of people who have been sick and affected by influenza because influenza is not a reportable disease in most areas of the U.S. However, CDC has estimated the burden of flu since 2010 using a mathematical model that is based on data collected through the U.S. Influenza Surveillance System, a network that covers approximately 8.5% of the U.S. population (~27 million people)."
