Every cloud has a silver lining and today's, after my trip to central Pattaya, was revealed to be a total absence of the usually ubiquitous chink tour buses parked up along Beach Road and in the Aclazar car park in Second Road. Hardly any chinks in Central Festival and I hear Terminal 1 is devoid of the usual sino throngs.

Coronavirus explained: How it differs from a regular flu - NZ Herald

According to the latest Australian Influenza Surveillance Report for the 2019 flu season, there were 812 influenza-associated deaths up until October 6. This made up 0.27 per cent of the 298,120 laboratory-confirmed notifications of influenza reported to Australian authorities.

This compares to the coronavirus, with latest numbers suggesting 106 people (2.3 per cent) have died out of 4515 known cases.
Prof McBride said it appeared coronavirus was more severe than influenza, although it may not be worse than severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which originated in China and killed nearly 800 people globally in 2002 and 2003.

"The difference between coronavirus and SARS is that SARS was not that infectious, it was transmitted mostly within hospitals," Prof McBride said.

Coronavirus also differs from SARS in that some don't display symptoms which makes its containment more of a challenge.

I'am not a Doctor (even though they used to call me Dr. Jay when I was young ) but something tells me that my lungs should be a "taboo" for any sickness. Never mind if I recover, but will they really recover in the long term ?

    Better be safe than sorry.

I travelled throughout SARS, bird flu and all the other flues and colds that are in the air, never caught anything.
Make sure you are healthy! boost immune system with copious amounts of Vit C before after and while flying, don't drink too much, unless you go to Muddy Murphy's then you can have lots of Guinness.
I flew into Singapore during the height of SARS, seriously - I was the only person in the terminal apart from a few staff, probably get quiet for travel.

The number of people who have died from the coronavirus has risen sharply to 213 - hours after the outbreak was declared a global public health emergency.

Chinese health officials have said that 9,692 people have now contracted the illness.

This is an increase of 1,981 cases and 81 deaths since Wednesday.

^^A strong constitution and healthy immune-system does not confer an immunity from infection, you idiot, but it does aid your chances of survival if you do catch it.

Outside of the health concerns, this is now significantly impacting businesses globally. The company I work for currently is being told that most Chinese provinces are extending the time off until the 2nd week of February, some saying to the end of the month. We have numerous optical components made in Hubei. At this time all factories are closed and anything they had in WIP or in FGI is stuck as no shipping. People are at home trapped. The impact will be felt for months to come as even if the workers are able to return to work it will be slow coming back to speed and this is working under the assumption that there will be a level of confidence it is under control by then, which I seriously doubt.

Upside....I might get a month long or so paid holiday....

I wager quite a few of those decided if they do have it then best to be treated elsewhere.

Could well be. I've been watching some German and French news with reports from Wuhan and Beijing, hospitals are flooded, not enough food, medical staff collapsing from overwork, members of the politbureau cheering people on, anger against the government growing, deserted streets, locals fighting with functionaries because of plans to settle thousands of potentially sick people in vacant buildings near their villages etc etc . . .

Yea, it's not all under control in China, where the health system is unbalanced and understaffed

Additionally the company that builds our product now has daily screening upon arrival for all employees and visitors. If your temperature from the IR scanner is >38c you have to leave and cannot return until the individual has a doctor note releasing them.

I think that was always going to be the case, earlier in the week they were showing exhausted staff sleeping on the floor in hospitals. They have the problems of sheer numbers and they went up massively in the last 4 days so its likely to get a lot worse yet. Sadly.

I wonder if the 'Verified destination" is just where the plane from Wuhan landed, with some passengers going onwards elsewhere and not remaining more than an hour or two. Possibly infecting airport travellers going onwards to their own destinations and airport staff.

The list doesn't appear to break down by nationality.
