Coronavirus outbreak declared global public health emergency by WHO

The coronavirus outbreak, which started in China, has now been officially declared a global public health emergency.

The decision by the World Health Organisation (WHO) comes as the number of people who have died from the virus reached 170.

So far, they have all occurred in China, where the virus originated in an illegal wildlife market in the city of Wuhan.

Chinese health authorities also said there were a total of 7,736 confirmed cases - and every region of the country has been affected
There have also been 98 confirmed infections in 18 other countries, according to the WHO.

They include eight cases of human-to-human transmission in Japan, Germany, Vietnam and the US.

    Out of curiosity...

I'm planning on going to Singapore to sort out my annual visa sometime in February, preferably sooner rather than later... I need to do it before work starts up which is usually in March.

Would this coronavirus put anyone off travelling to Singapore at the moment? I'm more concerned about being a carrier back home than catching it myself.

Sure, here's one just to illustrate . . . and the minister is Chinese. Malaysian Chinese, as in ethnicity. In other words, your previous statement that 'western countries will ban Chinese' is both misleading and quite untrue, putting a racial slant on the issue, which you deny but which is evident.:

Sabah suspends China flights due to coronavirus outbreak | New Straits Times | Malaysia General Business Sports and Lifestyle News

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has temporarily suspended all flights from China with immediate effect, following outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew said the decision was made after a state Cabinet meeting yesterday to reduce the risks of exposing people to any possible carriers of the virus.
Liew, who is also state Tourism, Culture and Environment minister, said although the travel ban might not be well-received by tourism players, the state government would not want to jeopardise the well-being of the people, given the uncertainties surrounding the coronavirus epidemic.
"Although this suspension will have repercussions on the state's tourism industry, the government feels the health and wellbeing of Sabahans is more important.
"It is only a temporary suspension and business operations are expected to resume once the situation returns to normal," she said in a statement.
Liew added the state secretary office would inform all airlines operating the China-KK routes about the Government's decision.
"This means that all flights from China will be halted, and there will be no entry for all travellers from the various Chinese cities to Kota Kinabalu during the suspension period."
China Government has already banned its citizens in Wuhan, Xi'an, Beijing, Tianjin and Guangzhou from travelling abroad.

As for the rest of your very messy post - so what does any of that have to do with the discussion? A senator wants to ban flights - wow! Your great satan USA has a senator that wants to ban flights . . .

FFS, protecting yourself around Chinese people is now considered racist.

I suppose saying 'She's Chinese' is not only racist, but using a gender-specific pronoun such as 'she' is also a big no-no as 'it' might be some sort of gender-fluid LBGTGLBXZY bi-gender that identifies as a sycamore tree.

Just direct inbound flights or any airport Chinese citizens may have access too? No mention of allowing flights to take any tourists back to China.

What is the government's plan going to be with regards to, "accommodating/caring for" all, the government dictated, stranded foreign tourists?

Will they allow foreign citizens/ex pats, Thai for example, to fly out/in from other countries, irrespective of passport?

If Malaysia reports the virus has been identified, within Malaysia, will it's citizens be banned to fly out?

1x Chinese person has infected 5x Germans so far, and about 110 have to stay at home.

They can tell me all they want but German hospitals are not capable of handling this outbreak. They have already problems with the "regulars".

    In PI:

At the ofc, there is an awareness campaign. Disinfectants & masks abound. There is fear, yes, but life goes on.

Yes, many Filipinos, not just netizens, want to ban Chinese flights & ships from entering, because we know that the health systems cannot handle it at large scale. Govt hospitals are full already. ICUs are full already - I had an FB friend who posted, asking help for suggestions of hospitals with ICU bcos the ones near to her were all occupied - non cov related, her mom was ill.

Well Mendip, i am sceptical about some of these santitsers, the alcohol ones. Best would a flame thrower but they are bulky and a difficult sell to immigration. Your fall back would be a small version like the chefs use to flambe or caramelise and just blow torch any surfaces you are going to touch, they warn off the infected also and will give a final golden hue to any undercooked nosh you get.

Cheap on lazada and don't listen to naysayers like Reachy who will be a long in a mo to criticise my advice.

Grab one of these and wipe/sanitise frequently, especially before you touch your face. Masks? Not that necessary
