    The COVID-2019 Thread

South Korea on Monday reported its first confirmed case of the China coronavirus
fuelling concerns that the pneumonia-like illness could be spreading across Asia.

A 35-year-old woman trying to enter the country from Wuhan, China, where the virus is thought to have originated, tested positive after being screened for symptoms at Incheon International Airport on Sunday.

“She was immediately separated for treatment in quarantine at a state-designated hospital,” said the Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). Among the symptoms she displayed were a high body temperature and respiratory difficulties.

The woman had been treated at a hospital in Wuhan for respiratory problems before boarding her flight, the public health and safety agency said.

Health authorities said they were monitoring other people who came into contact with her on the three-hour flight – including other passengers and flight crew members.

The KCDC cautioned travellers to Wuhan against visiting market places or medical facilities that might have been contaminated with the virus, urging them to avoid contact with uncooked meat or chicken.

“We will step up preventive measures to the same extent as MERS,” KCDC head Chung Eun-gyeong said at a live press conference, referring to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, which killed more than 30 people in South Korea in 2015.

She added there was “little chance” that the patient would spread the virus.

Korean health authorities have vowed to be on their guard throughout the Lunar New Year
holiday period, during which tens of thousands of Chinese tourists
    are expected to visit.

While there have been some calls online for a ban on flights to and from Wuhan, businessman Chung Jung-ho said he and his company employees who often travelled to southern China had taken the news in their stride.

“I’ve been following the news closely. This does not seem to be as severe as the SARS outbreaks in the past,” he told the South China Morning Post.“However, if I have to visit Wuhan for business reasons or whatever, I would think twice.”

Chinese authorities on Monday said another person had died over the weekend from the Wuhan coronavirus, bringing the death count to three, and for the first time officially announced infections in other areas in China.

It came as the World Health Organisation (WHO) said there was an indication that the pneumonia-like virus – thought to have originated in a seafood and animal meat market in Wuhan – could spread through human-to-human transmission.

China’s National Health Commission said two people in Beijing were confirmed as being infected, along with one in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong.

Suspected cases were also reported on Monday, with eight people under quarantine in Shenzhen and five in the coastal province of Zhejiang, which neighbours Shanghai.

Wuhan reported the death of a patient with the virus and more than 130 new infections over the weekend alone, taking the total in the central Chinese city to 198.

So the chinkies are reporting it in the hundreds but it is more likely in the thousands and is spreading.

Imagine all those chinkies coughing and spluttering a human-transmissible virus all over airports and railway stations.

The lies are spreading faster then the virus.

China's President Xi Jinping said on Monday that safeguarding people's lives should be given "top priority" and that the spread of the epidemic "should be resolutely contained"

Wuhan virus: Singapore to isolate all travellers from China with pneumonia; 7th suspect tests negative

SINGAPORE - With more people infected by the mysterious Wuhan virus and the bug spreading further, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Tuesday (Jan 21) that it is taking more precautionary measures.

This comes just a day after the ministry said it was expanding temperature screening to all inbound travellers arriving at Changi Airport from China, instead of just those from the Chinese city of Wuhan earlier.

The ministry said that in the light of China's health commission confirming on Monday that the coronavirus responsible for causing pneumonia in Wuhan can be transmitted between people, MOH is widening its isolation measures.

Previously, only people with fever and pneumonia who had travelled to Wuhan within two weeks of their symptoms starting were isolated.

But from Wednesday, those with pneumonia who have travelled to any part of China within two weeks of showing symptoms will also be subjected to isolation measures. Pneumonia symptoms include fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

In addition, isolation measures will likewise apply to those with acute respiratory infection who have been to any hospital in China within two weeks of showing symptoms, which may include a sore throat or body aches.

This is a precautionary measure to prevent transmission of the virus, the ministry said.

Isolation measures are used to restrict the contact of ill people with the healthy, while quarantine measures apply to people who are well and may have been exposed to the disease.

People who are quarantined may have been exposed to a disease and do not know it, or they may have the disease but do not show symptoms, according to the United States Department of Health and Services.

On Tuesday, MOH identified a seventh suspect case - a 44-year-old Singapore resident who has pneumonia and had recently been to Wuhan. She and the previous six suspected cases have tested negatively for the virus, going by the MOH's latest updates.

The ministry said that although there have been no confirmed cases here so far, it expects to see more suspected cases and even imported cases "given the high volume of international travel to Singapore".

"Once a case is confirmed, contact tracing will be initiated, and we will implement strict isolation, quarantine, and infection control and prevention measures to prevent further transmission," it said.

A total of 291 Wuhan virus cases have been reported in China, with a sixth fatality reported on Tuesday.

Earlier, cases were centred around Wuhan, but they have spread to Beijing and the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.

More than 900 people are still under medical observation, according to China’s National Health Commission, even as South Korea, Thailand and Japan confirmed their first cases in recent days.

Health experts have said that the Wuhan virus is likely not as infectious as the Sars virus, which killed almost 800 people 17 years ago. But they said under-reporting means more than 1,700 people in Wuhan could have already been infected with the disease.

Initially, the virus was thought to only transmit from animals to humans. However, the virus has infected at least 15 medical workers in Wuhan, confirming that the pathogen is being passed on among humans.

MOH warned travellers and members of the public to avoid contact with live animals and not to eat raw and undercooked meats in the meantime.

People should also observe good personal hygiene, wear a mask when they have a cough or runny nose, and see a doctor promptly if they feel unwell, the ministry said.

Police in China's Wuhan Move to Quash 'Rumors' About Virus Outbreak

Authorities in the central Chinese city of Wuhan have summoned and questioned eight people for allegedly posting "rumors" about the outbreak of viral pneumonia in the city, as experts warned the epidemic has likely spread much further than reports currently indicate.

"Some internet users have been publishing and forwarding fake news without verification, which has had an adverse social impact," the Wuhan municipal police department said in a recent statement.

"Eight people who engaged in illegal activities were summoned and their cases handled according to law, following a police investigation," it said.

"Anyone posting information and comments online should abide by [China's] laws and regulations," the police said in a statement reported by the Beijing Youth Daily newspaper. "The police will investigate and punish anyone fabricating and spreading rumors and disrupting social order."

Authorities in Wuhan have set up a prevention and control center to manage the outbreak of novel coronavirus (nCoV), as epidemiologists warned that the number of cases likely far exceeds the 270 confirmed cases reported by authorities in the city by Tuesday.

An epidemiologist at Imperial College London has previously estimated that there are more than 1,700 confirmed cases in Wuhan alone, while former top Hong Kong health official Gabriel Leung said the virus has likely already spread to at least 20 Chinese cities, including Chengdu, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.

Scientists from the University of Hong Kong arrived at the estimate by taking into consideration the air, rail and road links between Wuhan and other mainland cities, Hong Kong government broadcaster RTHK reported on Tuesday. Their estimate of current cases was similar to that of the Imperial College scientist.

    Rapid spread

Leung warned that the outbreak seems to be developing far more rapidly than the SARS outbreak in 2002-2003 that left more than 800 dead.

"[There is] a very strong sense of deja vu, except the timescale has been compressed, whereas you saw an unrecognised epidemic brewing for months since the end of 2002 up until, say, the peak of it, March, April [2003] in Hong Kong," Leung said.

"Here, you're talking about the same number, but the unit is weeks."

A Chinese health expert who had earlier claimed that the outbreak was "controllable" revealed on Tuesday that he caught the virus himself after visiting Wuhan to investigate the epidemic.

"I was diagnosed [with nCoV]," he told Hong Kong's Cable TV. "My condition is fine."

Human rights lawyer Xie Yanyi said the ruling Chinese Communist Party has huge structural problems when it comes to dealing with emergencies of this kind.

"Under this autocratic regime, officials at any level of government are never held accountable to the people, only to their superiors," Xie said.

"All they have to do is to sit on information and cover up the truth, because their future is determined by their bosses."

"Ordinary people have no right to vote, no right to know what the government is doing, and no way of holding them accountable," he said.

    'They haven't learned anything'

He said the authorities had started out insisting that there had been no cases of human-to-human transmission, and that there was little to fear from the virus.

"They're haven't learned anything from SARS back then, and they are continuing to cover things up," Xie said, adding that he wrote to China's National Health Commission to request full disclosure of all information relating to the Wuhan outbreak.

Government health expert Zhong Nanshan said: "We now know that human-to-human transmission is happening, and we are isolating patients and their close contacts, which is the most important thing."

"As long as it remains in this area and doesn't develop anywhere else, I don't think it will turn out to be similar to SARS," he said.

The outbreak comes as billions of passengers head to their hometowns by plane, train or automobile ahead of Lunar New Year's Eve on Jan. 24.

The Wuhan municipal party committee has already begun restricting the movements of government employees, banning them from leaving the city until the epidemic is under control.

Tour groups have been canceled and police are conducting random inspections of private vehicles to limit the flow of live poultry into the city.

    Restrictions not effective

Huang Yongxiang, a resident of the southern city of Guangzhou, said the restrictions hadn't been very effective, because many people had left the city long before the restrictions were brought in.

"A lot of people have already left," Huang said, citing friends who live in Wuhan. "I asked a lot of friends about this, in Wuhan and in other cities, and they said that hardly anyone is wearing surgical masks because the government has been deleting news [about the virus], so the public has no sense of urgency."

A resident of the central province of Hubei, of which Wuhan is the capital, said people are beginning to get worried since the authorities admitted that the virus is being transmitted between people, however.

"There is a sense of fear, and they have sold out of masks in some places," the resident, who declined to be named, told RFA.

He said the most effective masks were now unobtainable, while the less effective ones that had previously sold for 30 yuan a box are now changing hands for ten times that amount.

1st case of coronavirus from China confirmed in U.S.

A case of the new coronavirus from China has been confirmed in a patient in Washington state, just north of Seattle, federal health officials said Tuesday. The mysterious pneumonia-like illness has killed at least six people and sickened hundreds in Asia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

In addition, the CDC said they will begin screening passengers for the virus at two additional airports: the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. On Jan. 17, the CDC started screening airplane passengers from the central Chinese city of Wuhan for signs of the respiratory illness in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Now, all passengers whose flights originate in Wuhan will be rerouted to one of these five airports, the CDC said.

They actually increase your chances of getting infected. The only useful thing they do is limit your ability to spread the infection.

I doubt most of the mongs that wear them are aware of this.

China’s Coronavirus Death Toll Nearly Doubles to 17 in a Matter of Hours

A newly identified strain of coronavirus has killed at least 17 people in China and caused hundreds of confirmed infections, the Hubei provincial government said Wednesday, citing the latest figures from hard-hit Wuhan and other cities.

Health officials in Beijing say they're concerned that the deadly coronavirus could spread further during the Lunar New Year celebrations. Chinese state media reports that Wuhan authorities will temporarily suspend bus, subway, ferry and long-distance passenger transport, and cancel flights and trains, in an attempt to help contain the virus.

There were 555 confirmed cases of the virus, mostly in China, as of Wednesday evening, according to according to a dashboard tracker created by Johns Hopkins University.

A few coronavirus cases have been reported outside China, but no deaths have been reported outside the country.

China's Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control said that while the virus does not appear to be as virulent as the one that caused a SARS — severe acute respiratory syndrome — pandemic 17 years ago, it is nonetheless "highly infectious."

"The virus is mainly transmitted through the respiratory tract," Li Bin, vice minister of China's National Health Commission, which overseas the bureau, said at a Wednesday news conference of a health expert panel in Beijing. "It may mutate and there is risk of further spread."

"We have ensured management of export channels such as temperature checks at airports, train and bus stations, and ports ... And we will reduce as much as possible events with large crowds," Li said.

Lunar New Year is China's — and the world's — busiest travel season. Officially, the holiday is this Saturday, but celebrations continue well into February. About 400 million Chinese are expected to travel within and outside the country beginning at the end of the week.

"During Chinese New Year, the surge [in people moving around the country] increases the risk of the epidemic's spread and the difficulty of prevention and control. We must not take it lightly," Li said.

He said residents of Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, should avoid densely populated areas and public gatherings.

The virus, known as 2019-nCoV, was discovered last month in the central city of Wuhan. Since then, it has spread to other parts of China, and isolated cases have been found in Japan, Thailand, South Korea, the U.S. and Hong Kong.

Symptoms of infection include fever, dry cough, difficulty breathing, diarrhea and body aches.

On Monday, Chinese state media reported that 15 health workers treating patients had also become infected with the virus, includingone of the country's most preeminent respiratory doctors, suggesting human-to-human transmission of the virus, although Chinese health authorities have yet to confirm that.

That's going to fuck things up for people at this time of year when nearly everyone is going somewhere. They've also stopped all citywide public transit. Buses trains etc.
Tomorrow is the eve of Chinese new year and Things are real quiet around here, shops restaurants closed etc. People heading back to the village of their forefathers etc.
Many people out and about wearing facemasks.
(Which interestingly enough have been outlawed in HK, wonder how that'll go down)

Year of the Snake ! Fucking bastards eat just about anything that crawls or moves. This is NOAH's REVENGE !

Snakes Are The Likely Source of China's Deadly Coronavirus. Here's Why

HAITAO GUO ET AL., THE CONVERSATION
    23 JAN 2020

Snakes – the Chinese krait and the Chinese cobra – may be the original source of the newly discovered coronavirus that has triggered an outbreak of a deadly infectious respiratory illness in China this winter.
The illness was first reported in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a major city in central China, and has been rapidly spreading. Since then, sick travelers from Wuhan have infected people in China and other countries, including the United States.
Using samples of the virus isolated from patients, scientists in China have determined the genetic code of the virus and used microscopes to photograph it. The pathogen responsible for this pandemic is a new coronavirus.....................

    Quarantined in Wuhan

    HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!

China cuts off travel to the city where a new virus emerged.

The Chinese government on Wednesday cut train and air travel out of the city of Wuhan in a race to contain the mysterious coronavirus that has sickened more than 500 on the mainland. Quarantining a city of 11 million is a radical step, the kind democracies are loath to take, but then maybe China is determined not to relive the deadly SARS outbreak of 2003 and be blamed for a global pandemic.
