One active farang in Pty, that's all it takes, and from the little I've noticed there's close to zero virus measures around the bars.

I can see that being a big problem if every country goes into lockdown.

Those Visa runs to Malaysia are fucked for a start.

The Government has approved plans to postpone the Songkhran holiday. And close schools.

The cabinet on Tuesday approved plans to postpone next month's Songkran New Year holiday and to close schools to limit the spread of the coronavirus, a government spokeswoman said.

The approvals followed a series of plans announced on Monday to close schools, bars, movie theatres, cockfighting arenas and other entertainment centres as well as postpone the Thai New Year holiday, which falls between April 13 to 15.

"The cabinet approved that the Songkran holiday be postponed and schools closed," Ratchada Thanadirek, the government's deputy spokeswoman, told Reuters.

She added that closures of entertainment venues would be up to the discretion of each provincial governors, adding that more details would be available later.

I'll be asking immigration in two weeks time. I came in on a 30 day tourist visa but will try and extend if necessary.

You prolly came in on a 30day visa exemption and that can usually be extended by 30days for 1900baht. One time only!
If you are legally married to your missus and bring proof of that then you can get a longer extension for the same amount of money.

Yes, can get 60 days on a VE entry (or on any visa)

Bring wife (probably optional), marriage cert, her tabien baan and ID Card with signed copies.

    2) Selection of optimal path is based on:
    i) lowering rate of infection and lengthening duration of spread to avoid overwhelming NHS
ii) Trying to protect those most vunerable (ie elderly)
iii) acknowledging level of public dissent/non-compliance is likely to scale with severity of measures

Within these constraints a staggered approach seems the right one to me. Aims to get most of the benefits from the more draconian measures whilst applying them for the least time.
Any measure will be most effective provided it straddles the peak in the infection rate, which is not expected for 2-3 months. If schools were to close now we would need them to stay closed for more than 3 months to be more effective than a strategy in which they close later on at around peak. And we would have to keep our kids from mixing with elderly relatives etc. Simply impossible.
I think the UK science advice looks bang on, but happy to be told why it is not the right thing to do by anyone who knows better.

^ only four days ago, but that hasn't aged well.

‘Herd immunity’ policy ditched as UK adapts Covid-19 response

The stringent new measures Boris Johnson announced on Monday represent a major shift in his government’s approach to the coronavirus, bringing it into closer alignment with other European countries. Until now, Britain hoped to “flatten the curve” of the virus’s spread without introducing severe social distancing measures so soon.

But the virus has spread so fast, especially in London, that the National Health Service (NHS) feared its services would be overwhelmed without radical, immediate action to suppress it. Now, a few days later than countries such as Ireland, Britain is telling its people to stay at home if they can and avoid unnecessary contact with others.

Covid-19: Entertainment venues to be closed for 14 days, sporting events suspended

All entertainment places in and around Bangkok, including pubs, massage parlours, nightclubs and movie houses, will be closed for two weeks as part of the government’s attempts to curb the spread of the coronavirus, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha announced this afternoon.

Sporting events will also be banned until further notice, he said.

He said all mass public gatherings and activities will also be prohibited. They include concerts, exhibitions and religious gatherings.

The ban will take effect starting Wednesday.

He said they are among a package of measures proposed by the committee to fight against Covid-19 chaired by Prime Minister Prayut and approved by the Cabinet today.

The Cabinet also approved its proposal to postpone the Songkran holiday.

Prayut insisted that the measures are short of locking down Bangkok. “We have never said anything about shutting down Bangkok. But we need to imposed control,” he said in response to speculation that the government was contemplating a lockdown for the city.

That is going to financially hurt a lot of people. Many of them are already living pretty much hand to mouth.

And in line with the law of unintended consequences, send them rushing back home to the provinces.

    No nipping off to Bali.

JAKARTA (REUTERS) - Indonesia will prohibit the entry and transit of visitors from six European countries plus Iran from March 20 due to coronavirus concerns, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday (March 17).
For the next month, all travellers who wish to visit Indonesia will also have to obtain a health certificate from their home countries and must apply for a visa from Indonesian missions, the ministry said in a statement.
Restrictions for travellers from China and South Korea's Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do province remain in place, the ministry said.
