Death rate by age in Italy. Population is older there so this data is likely a bit slanted.

Spain has another 1,000 cases today.

As for Iran, they have reported another 1,200 or so, but authorities think they are concealing the truth after satellite photos showed mass graves had been dug near Qom.

The news in the UK is getting a bit hysterical, shock horror more cases, 800 in fact.....ffs its going to do the rounds and not a whole lot you can do about that. Started to skip articles on it now, just pathetic.

UK coronovirus science strategy seems to be coming in for a lot of unfair flack on social media and some broadcast media. I'm a non expert, but i understand the strategy to be as follows:
    1) Acceptance that containment is not possible and so now we need to choose an optimal path towards herd immunity.
    2) Selection of optimal path is based on:
    i) lowering rate of infection and lengthening duration of spread to avoid overwhelming NHS
ii) Trying to protect those most vunerable (ie elderly)
iii) acknowledging level of public dissent/non-compliance is likely to scale with severity of measures

Within these constraints a staggered approach seems the right one to me. Aims to get most of the benefits from the more draconian measures whilst applying them for the least time.
Any measure will be most effective provided it straddles the peak in the infection rate, which is not expected for 2-3 months. If schools were to close now we would need them to stay closed for more than 3 months to be more effective than a strategy in which they close later on at around peak. And we would have to keep our kids from mixing with elderly relatives etc. Simply impossible.
I think the UK science advice looks bang on, but happy to be told why it is not the right thing to do by anyone who knows better.

What ever you do measures wise you are going to be 2-4 weeks behind the fire front. They have modeled it, its not perfect but most Govts are shooting in the dark. The problem is those closing everything are shit scared if they don't they'll get hung out to dry.

My view is it'll run its course and all the arm chair doctors slating the UK Govt don't have the stats and numbers, in fact nor do the Govt because it moves faster than they can react or gather stats. Really if you have olds or at risk you just have to isolate them as much as you can until it burns through.

I think the British model is sensible. It's essentially a managed infection and with that will come the herd immunity.

Contrast it with others who are doing their best to stop it spreading with draconian measures such as in Italy and Iran.

It means all those people will be wide open to it when the next cycle begins, and they will end up having to repeat the process.

    In other news:

Media in Brazil reported that President Jair Bolsonaro had tested positive for the Covid-19 virus, a day after his press secretary was confirmed to have been infected and days after the Brazilian leader met US President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Spain will be in a state of emergency for the next 15 days to better combat the coronavirus, a dramatic increase to the policy response that will allow authorities to confine people and ration goods.

The state of emergency, which Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Friday and will formally be decided by a cabinet meeting on Saturday, will give the government power to take wide-ranging measures, including temporarily occupying factories or any other premises except private homes.

Europe is now the ‘epicenter’ of the coronavirus pandemic, WHO says

Coronavirus: Europe now epicentre of the pandemic, says WHO

Europe is now the "epicentre" of the global coronavirus pandemic, the head of the World Health Organization says.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged countries to use aggressive measures, community mobilisation and social distancing to save lives.

His comments came as several countries in Europe reported steep rises in the number of infections and deaths. Spain is now the worst affected after Italy.

On Friday, Spain reported a 50% jump in fatalities to 120. Infections increased to 4,200.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says a state of emergency will come into effect there on Saturday for two weeks.

    Why is Europe the 'epicentre'?

More than 132,500 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in 123 countries around the world, according to the WHO.

The total number of deaths has reached about 5,000 - a figure Dr Tedros described as "a tragic milestone".

"Europe has now become the epicentre of the pandemic, with more reported cases and deaths than the rest of the world combined, apart from China," he said.

"More cases are now being reported every day than were reported in China at the height of its epidemic."

^ yep they are on it like Chitty's bonnet. Does a Govt out there bother with them?. The UK and some others were at the forefront of the Ebola mission, it was fookin risky but the WHO were still behind their committee rooms. God i loath them and other UN type Orgs.

Greek Orthodox church says 'holy cup cannot carry disease', allows congregations to share spoon

    The COVID-2019 Thread-9143928-3x2-700x467-jpg

Religious congregations across Australia have responded to recent coronavirus containment measures in a variety of ways, including one church that has chosen to ignore medical advice.

    Key points:
    • Australian Medical Association associate professor Julian Rait said the move by the church put parishioners at risk
    • In Australia, 373,000 people identified as Greek Orthodox in the 2016 census and 40 per cent were aged over 50
    • The Catholic Church and Anglican Church have ceased serving wine in the common cup, due to coronavirus

Greek Orthodox churches across the country will allow congregations of hundreds of people to sip wine from the same spoon during mass because "the holy cup cannot carry disease," the Archdiocese said.

Greek Orthodox priests dip a spoon into a chalice of wine and place it into the mouths of parishioners, as part of communion during mass. The spoon and chalice remain the same throughout the ceremony.

There was a lot of talk going on about dogs being able to catch and spread it, seems like that's been debunked now.

    Trump lying AGAIN.

.@Yamiche: Why did you shut down the pandemic office in the White House

Trump first calls it a "nasty question." Then says someone else shut it down. "I don't know anything about it."
