As the number of patients stricken by China’s coronavirus continues to mount, at least one analyst believes the country’s reported casualties might be far higher than Beijing has publicly admitted.

Raymond James health care policy analyst Chris Meekins said he suspects official Chinese statistics on coronavirus infections is “really a fraction” of those who actually have contracted the disease — in part because of the country’s established history of underreporting its public health crises.

As global health officials grapple with arresting the virus’ spread, Meekins told “The Ticker” on Friday that “Based on conversations I’ve had with individuals both in the U.S. government and more importantly [in China] is that the number that have been reported out of China on this disease are really a fraction of the number of people who have probably had the disease.”

Over the weekend, China said that thousands of new cases had surfaced, and put the official death count at 80, as a
fifth U.S. patient was identified by the Centers for Disease Control on Sunday. The news rocked Wall Street on Monday, where major benchmarks plunged at the opening bell, as traders grappled with fears of a global pandemic.

“If China’s been reporting about 800 [infections] with 25 deaths, we think the number is probably 10 times that number in China right now because you had a number of misdiagnoses,” Meekins said.

“In China it’s a much bigger issue than people realize,” the analyst said. “In the U.S. I still think it’s not going to be a big issue, though in the coming days I think we’re going to see a notable increase in the coming patients that actually have the virus here.”

It is a bit worrying on my part, because there are 2 suspected cases of the virus in Metro Manila. Those 2 cases are in the southern part, near where I live & work. One is in Alabang, where there are loads of Chinese workers because of the online casinos. I've seen those Chinese workers for myself, both at the mall - Ayala South Park Mall anf in Condo buildings. Those workers may have gone home to China either during the Christmas holidays (wherein there were reported cases already) or during this lunar new year. Because of my work, I come into contact with many people, some of whom are from Alabang or Pasay city, etc. It's worrying, especially since the ppl in South Luzon are still reeling from the effects of Taal Volcano eruption. Then now, it's the threat of corona virus. Disinfection & face mask galore.

    The COVID-2019 Thread-received_976157172817405-jpeg

^I got that jpg from a chat group, but it's also circulating in FB.

There are vids circulating in YouTube that it's more of 90k ppl who are infected already.

If you know of the vlogger serpentza, watch his latest live stream. He showed vids of ppl keeling over and packed hospitals.

Thai universities tighten measures on travel to and from China

Several Thai universities with student exchange programs with Chinese universities, or a large contingent of Chinese students, have taken measures to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus on campus.

Rangsit University announced on its Facebook page today that its International College has decided to suspend classes from today until Thursday, and has advised students, who develop flu-like symptoms, to visit hospitals or notify their teaching advisors immediately, so that they can be provided with appropriate treatment.

Students, who have returned from China in the past two weeks, have been told to wear N95 face masks for at least two weeks and to avoid visiting crowded places.

Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Mai province, which has a large number of Chinese students and teaching staff, has advised those who are still in China to delay their return to Thailand for at least two weeks. Students or staff members who plan to visit China have been told to postpone their plans until further notice.

Mahidol University has issued an announcement advising its Chinese students in Thailand to avoid meeting fellow students who have just returned from China. Students of staff members who returned from China after January 17th have been told to stay home for ten days and to report to the student affairs unit so it can keep track of the returnees.

All students and university staff are advised to delay trips to China. If they have to travel, they are advised to wear face masks while they are outdoors and avoid visiting livestock markets.

The Tha Phra Palace campus of Silpakorn University, which is a popular attraction for tourists from many nations, has closed its main gates, leaving a small entrance for convenient screening of visitors.

Meanwhile, Air Asia has extended it suspension of all flights to the Chinese city of Wuhan from Kota Kina Balu international airport in Malaysia, Bangkok and Phuket international airports until February 15th as more fatalities and new cases of coronavirus are reported in Wuhan.

A Thai exchange student, who has just returned from China, has been admitted to Ang Thong provincial hospital for observation after she developed a cough. Medical technicians took samples of her blood, to be sent to the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute for tests.

Thai health officials at the Mae Sot border crossing have stepped up the screening of travellers, especially Chinese, moving across the Thai-Myanmar border. So far, no coronavirus infection has been reported.

While China has form for under reporting health issues, which probably also occurs elsewhere, one of the msm 'experts' speculates (with 'evidence' that went whoosh) that the front end knew the virus was incubating and spreading for weeks prior to reporting it to their superiors, and then up to weeks more as those bosses panicked and tried to contain it but couldn't and were forced to send it up the chain, either for career reasons or because that's the way it works in the 3W.

As of 13m ago China confirms 81 dead and 2700 infected (cbs), while there are various estimates up to 9k suspected cases, mostly in China.

Coronavirus epidemic sends shivers through Japan’s red-districts

BY ROLAND SHICHIJO ON JANUARY 27, 2020

TOKYO (TR) – Between January 24 and 30, some 700,000 Chinese tourists are expected to arrive in Japan to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Normally, Japan’s numerous red-light districts would be welcoming of the throng. However, as conveyed by evening tabloid Yukan Fuji (Jan. 26), proprietors of brothels and bathhouses this year are showing concern due to the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China.
“With the outbreak, some girls seem nervous,” says a person employed in Yoshiwara, Japan’s largest soapland bathhouse district in Tokyo’s Taito Ward.
Thus far, Japan has confirmed four coronavirus cases. Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfares said on Monday that the latest infected person is a man in his 40s who arrived in Japan last week as a tourist from Wuhan. He is in a stable condition.

Tobita Shinchii is a popular brothel quarter in Osaka City“Close contact”

In addition to Yoshiwara, the other top fuzoku (commercial sex) districts include Susukino in Sapporo City, Sakae in Nagoya, Tobita Shinchi in Osaka City, Fukuhara in Kobe City and Nakasu in Fukuoka City.
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare is calling on people to avoid “close contact” with others and wear masks and thoroughly wash their hands. However, such tactics are likely futile for the fuzoku trade.
“Foreign men are attracted to Japan’s high-level services,” says another person connected to the trade. “There are tours to certain establishments that cater to foreign guests. And, during Chinese New Year, there are a lot of Chinese guys [who take part].”
According to Fuji, just being seated next to an infected person at a karaoke box could put one at a risk. For proprietors in the sex trade, the situation is tricky.
“Parlors in entertainment districts cannot choose customers,” says Tadanobu Bando, an author and former member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. “If [a customer is] infected, the virus could spread to another customer. Maybe it is necessary to consider measures to protect adult establishments and their employees.”

Cambodia Latest Regional Neighbor to Confirm Case of Coronavirus Traced to China’s Wuhan City

Cambodia became the latest country to confirm a case of coronavirus on Monday, announcing that a Chinese national in the coastal city of Sihanoukville has been infected in the outbreak that has been traced to Wuhan city, in central China’s Hubei province.

Health Minister Mam Bunheng said that the 60-year-old patient flew to Cambodia from Wuhan on Jan. 23, developed a fever and runny nose on Jan. 25, and was confirmed to have been infected with the Wuhan novel coronavirus (nCoV) by the Pasteur Institute in the capital, Phnom Penh, on Monday after submitting a blood sample to medical workers a day earlier.

The patient is being hospitalized in Sihanoukville, he said, adding that none of the man’s three family members who traveled with him tested positive for the virus, which has killed 81 people and has been confirmed to have infected nearly 2,900 people worldwide in more than a dozen countries—although most cases are in China.

“He is being monitored and his current status is stable,” Mam Bunheng said, adding that the man “showed signs of common flu.”

“Health professionals have been paying close attention to the patient’s condition by isolating him for care in a Sihanoukville hospital. We also put his family members under close watch and we are looking for others who may have contacted him in order to monitor their health conditions.”

Mam Bunheng appealed to the public to remain vigilant in the face of the confirmation of the first case of nCoV on Monday, as the cost of face masks—believed to help control the spread of the virus—skyrocketed around the country.

At least 23 Cambodian students studying in Wuhan, meanwhile, have appealed to Cambodia’s government to help repatriate them, as authorities have instituted a lockdown of the city to prevent the virus from being transmitted.

“The usually crowded city is nearly quiet, with no cars running or people walking,” one of the students named Phoung Bopha Kimhong told RFA’s Khmer Service on Monday.

“People are staying in their houses to prevent themselves from catching the virus. Most shops are closed, so we are running out of food. We are worried and want to go back home.”

Phoung Bopha Kimhong said that Chinese authorities had donated food to them.

Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry issued a press release Monday saying that the government has no plan to evacuate the students, but instructed the Cambodian Embassy in China to help them as needed. The ministry urged the students to contact the Embassy.

In December, Cambodia’s government said that more than two million Chinese tourists visited the country in the first 10 months of 2019, representing nearly a quarter increase for the same period in 2018.

The 2.03 million Chinese tourists who traveled to Cambodia from January to October 2019 increased 24.4 percent year-on-year, and made up the vast majority—38.3 percent—of visitors from any one country, the Ministry of Tourism said at the time.

Chinese investment has flowed into Sihanoukville in recent years, but Cambodians regularly chafe at what they call unscrupulous business practices and unbecoming behavior by Chinese businessmen and residents.

Cambodia’s immigration department deported 906 Chinese, including 172 women, to China during the first nine months of 2019, according to Interior Ministry figures.

    Myanmar

Immigration officials in Myanmar meanwhile have been screening all cross-border travelers with thermal scanners at all official border crossings and sending them for hospital tests if necessary, said Kyaw Soe, general administrative officer of northern Shan state’s Muse district, which borders China.

Health officials have tested two Myanmar migrant workers with non-normal body temperatures who they found at the Muse-White Elephant immigration office at the China-Myanmar border, he told RFA’s Myanmar Service Monday.

Muse District Hospital authorities released a 20-year-old male whose temperature returned to normal when he arrived at the medical facility, but said they are keeping a 23-year-old woman under observation because she was sick for two days in China, Kyaw Soe said.

Social media reports that the coronavirus has spread to the Chinese border town Ruili, across a river from Muse, has heightened concern among Myanmar border residents, though officials from the Ministry of Health said no infected individuals have been detected in Myanmar.

Myanmar authorities said they are also monitoring people in northern Myanmar’s Kachin state and in southern Shan state whom they suspect of carrying the coronavirus after recently returning from China.

Authorities have suspended direct flights between the Myanmar cities of Yangon and Mandalay and Wuhan, the epicenter of virus outbreak.

The Myanmar Embassy in Beijing, meanwhile, is trying to assist 60 Myanmar students stuck in the Wuhan area in returning home and is waiting for Chinese authorities to respond, said Soe Pyae Sone, the embassy’s secretary.

“We are negotiating with authorities to take them back,” he told RFA. “We are negotiating with the Foreign Affairs Office in Hubei. So far, we haven’t received a reply. We are still waiting for their response. We haven’t got the permission yet.”

Soe Pyae Sone added that the students must undergo a medical test for the virus and remain under observation for 14 days before they can return to Myanmar.

The embassy has arranged with local authorities and organizations to provide food to the students in the quarantined city for a week and has made available a phone number so they and others in Wuhan can call for help, he said.

Sithu, a Myanmar student in Wuhan, told RFA on Sunday that he and others are trying to take precautions to avoid infection.

“We are being cautious so as to avoid infection, he said. “We are following the guidelines from the WHO [World Health Organization]. The city is pretty deserted. There have been no people on the street since yesterday.”

    Laos

In Laos, Minister of Health Bounkong Sihavong told reporters on Sunday that no case of nCoV has been confirmed in the country and dismissed reports circulating on social media that said a patient had been infected and was being treated in a Vientiane hospital as “fake news,” according to state media.

“So far, no patient has been confirmed as being infected with the new virus in Laos,” the official Vientiane Times quoted him as saying, adding that while there have been suspected cases in the country, tests had proved all negative.

In response to the threat of the virus, health authorities have strengthened screening and quarantine measures at all 27 ports of entry throughout the country—all of which have deployed thermal scanners to check visitors.

However, Bounkong Sihavong acknowledged that authorities face difficulties in preventing people infected with nCoV from entering the country, as carriers typically exhibit no symptoms during the first one or two weeks of infection.

RFA’s Lao Service also spoke with a Lao student who has been stuck in Wuhan amid the lockdown, along with two fellow nationals at his university, who said that the three of them were unable to return home during their holiday break.

“Now we’re stuck in our room, allowed to go out only once a day to buy food,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Wuhan is a big city with 11 million people, but right now it’s like a war zone … there are no cars and all the schools are closed. I haven’t seen sick or dead people yet, only on the news. I’m OK, but I’m afraid, and my family in Laos is worried about me.”

The student said he and his compatriots were awaiting orders from the Lao Embassy, and that “all together there are about 50 Lao students quarantined in Wuhan right now.”

The Lao Embassy in Beijing on Monday informed the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs that 99 Lao students have returned home from Wuhan, while 49 remain in the city.

    Vietnam

In Vietnam, authorities have tested 63 people who exhibited fever symptoms after entering the country from nCoV-affected areas in China and found 25 of them negative for the virus. The remaining 38—including two Chinese nationals who tested positive for the virus—are being kept in quarantine at the Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, according to the official English-language Viet Nam News.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Monday held a meeting with officials from relevant ministries and sectors in the capital Hanoi to discuss how to combat the virus, noting that Vietnam faces high risks of infection because of the country’s popularity as a destination for Chinese tourists and shares a long border with China.

Nguyen’s meeting came as authorities in some Vietnamese provinces said they will no longer accept Chinese tourists, following the recent announcement by China’s government that it is banning international group travel—effective Monday—in a bid to contain the virus.

The Khanh Hoa Province Tourism Association told Vietnamese state media on Monday that tourist companies targeting the Chinese market in the province will temporarily suspend operations beginning on Tuesday.

The Lao Cai Provincial Culture, Sport and Tourism Association on Monday also issued a directive requiring tourist companies targeting the Chinese market to temporarily suspend services to assist with immigration via the Lao Cai checkpoint, which borders China’s Yunnan province.

Vid from Med Cram, explained by a medical doctor. His source is Lancet, a medical journal

At the end of the vid, he stated that scientists sequenced the RNA of the NCov and compared it to known animal viruses. Scientists found that the virus is most similar to a snake virus.

Many exotic animals were sold in that Wuhan market, including snakes, bats, civet cats, porcupines, etc.

Re: disinfection - yes it works, since our hands come into contact with so many things that other ppl (infected/ not infected) may have touched.

As for face masks, the ordinary surgical masks are not too effective. It's better to use the N95 masks. But some say that thin mask is better than no mask at all.

My office has placed disinfectant/ alcohol stations at the entrances. They're also giving away free surgical masks. However, I bought my own N95 mask due to the Taal volcano eruption 2 weeks ago. I line it with tissue paper & change the tissue regularly. My ofc is trying to be careful, due to its proximity to Alabang (Muntinlupa), where there's a suspected case, and where there are loads of Chinese online casino workers.

Here's Part 2 of the med cram vid.

Edit: for the 11 suspected cases of NCov in PI, most of them came from tourist areas/ islands like Palawan (Puerto Princesa), Kalibo (Boracay island), Cebu & Camiguin.

Considering it is possible to be infected and contagious without symptoms I think any published numbers of infected people are going to be wildly inaccurate and low.

the coronavirus panic is turning the UK into a hostile environment for east Asians

    Sam Phan

Stereotypes are spreading as quickly as the virus. On the bus, in the street, people have started treating us as if we’re infected

‘The virus has spread to at least eight other countries including Thailand, Japan and the US, and it’s ‘highly likely’ it will reach the UK, according to Public Health England.’

The atmosphere on my morning commute is tense. As panic over the coronavirus deepens and dominates the headlines, as an east Asian I can’t help but feel more and more uncomfortable. On the bus to work last week, as I sat down, the man next to me immediately scrambled to gather his stuff and stood up to avoid sitting next to me.

Perhaps it did not occur to these people that I, as a UK citizen, was no more likely than them to be carrying the virus
On the train over the weekend, a group sat opposite me chattering about their weekend plans. One of them seriously advised the rest, “I wouldn’t go to Chinatown if I were you, they have that disease.”

As I made my way towards Chinatown in London, an elderly woman and her friend on the escalators at Leicester Square underground station were casually talking about how dangerous the area now was, and she complained she was obliged to go there for a meeting. “At least I’m old, I have nothing left to lose,” she laughed.

In another loud conversation, I overheard a woman talking about how terrified she was that her friend, who had spent some time working with Chinese students, might have infected her with the virus.

In light of current events, we east Asians in the UK are on high alert, paying close attention to how people interact with us. It is not their concern about health that is problematic, but the stereotyping of all east Asians as a coronavirus risk. At times such as this, even a simple bus trip can feel like a hostile environment.

A friend at a university library experienced something similar: as soon as they sat down at a desk, the person in front of them packed up their things to leave. We’re noticing odd things like this that we never saw happen before.

Perhaps it did not occur to some of these people, so happy to talk loudly in front of me, that I was also concerned about the virus – or that I, as a British citizen, was no more likely than them to be carrying the virus. They grouped all east Asian people together, without factoring in that perhaps we were British or, if not, we were from unaffected areas of China, or even came from other countries in the Chinese diaspora. We were all the same to them.

The virus that originated in Wuhan has spread to at least eight other countries including Thailand, Japan, Australia and the US, and it’s “highly likely” it will reach the UK, according to Public Health England.

As it spreads, the virus has revealed more and more stereotyped judgments about Chinese people. I have also heard accounts from east Asians, even if they are not Chinese, who have recently been profiled while travelling at airports or on trains due to the ignorant perception that all east Asians are Chinese.

George Osborne, editor of the Evening Standard, proudly tweeted his newspaper’s cartoon of a rat with a face mask to supposedly commemorate the lunar new year. Piers Morgan mocked the Chinese language on Good Morning Britain with a tired “ching chang chong” joke. East Asians have been accused of instigating the virus by having “revolting” eating habits. Most Asians know these stereotypes all too well.

These insulting depictions don’t reflect the reality of being Chinese at all, and encourage the misguided perception of more than one billion people being a monolithic and singular group in which everyone speaks, acts and looks the same. In fact, there is a huge diversity.

Language and culture vary massively within the region. Speakers of Hokkien would not be able to converse with people who speak Hakka. And despite Mandarin being the lingua franca, there are more than 200 dialects spoken across China. In fact in Wuhan itself, a beautiful and diverse city with more than 3,500 years of history, many of its population of 11.8 million speak a Wuhan dialect.

Elsewhere, natives of Aksu look completely different to the majority Han Chinese. And the food, too: dim sum from the south of China is vastly different from the tangy, spicy flavours of Sichuan.

This week, my ethnicity has made me feel like I was part of a threatening and diseased mass. To see me as someone who carries the virus just because of my race is, well, just racist.

As the lunar new year celebrations take place across the world, let’s take a moment to think about the way in which east Asians are perceived and how important it is to see us in all our diversity, as individual human beings, and to challenge stereotypes. The coronavirus is a human tragedy, so let’s not allow fear to breed hatred, intolerance and racism.

My post had similar confirmed and death numbers with Chinese MSM which I posted.

"Suspected" by who, confirmed by who?

    My "BBC World Service", alleged "sources" are;

"Source: National Health Commission, as of end of 26 January, plus state media"

The survival rate isn't bad but the infection rate is high because it can infect for weeks before the symptoms appear.
