Exactly right. The media, in typical fashion, has whipped the world into a global panic and the lemmings are lining up in droves to go jump off the cliffs. Now they even have clips from all the "preppers" that all of sudden get to brag they are set to go underground. .

I still say, let it take its course, just like flu seasons, Take all the general precautions that have been around for years. For the elderly with secondary ailments, stay home, keep protected. Minimize socializing.

I see it the other way. The more people panic, the more they go to see if they have it is taxing the medical systems. My daughter is seeing it first hand. She said emergency and waiting rooms are full of people who think they might have it, maybe some do. However they are bringing it to the hospitals exposing the ones that are already weak. If you exhibit signs, just stay home.

Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte signed a decree Saturday putting much of the countries north — including Venice and Milan — on lockdown Saturday to try and curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Why it matters: Italy has the largest number of cases in Europe — 883 by 10 p.m. ET, per John Hopkins University data. At least 16 million people are now in mandatory quarantine in the Lombardy, along with 14 provinces, the BBC notes. Among those to test positive is the head of Italy’s Democratic Party, Nicola Zingaretti, per Bloomberg.

It has started to affect Munich, although isolated to small clusters at the moment. Some workers and some school children have been told to self isolate for two weeks. I'm not sure if this also applies to close family members.

There was a bit of panic buying yesterday. Some items, mainly hand disinfectant s, have been sold out for a week.

    That's absolutely right.

Also, you can see the examples in China, Korea and Italy are very clear - containment is the option to stop the healthcare system nationwide being overwhelmed.

If left to its own devices then national healthcare systems would have just broken in China and Korea already. To be fair to the WTO and China (and now the Korean and Italian governments), they have all followed this process of containment with some success.

That's a different issue, that's healthcare services management - in Korea, security guards won't let you into the hospitals for such checks; there was a relatively amusing innocent where a colleague/friend of mine went to the hospital to collect a checkup certificate, but was checked on the gate, had a temperate, and wasn't allowed in - the checks were done by security guards, so no strain on healthcare professionals. There's a national number to call if you think you may be affected, and you will be tutored through the process...

I went to the local doctor surgery on Friday to get the wife a TB check for her visa extension - it was by far the quietest I've ever seen it in the six years I've lived in Korea.

I don't go for self-isolation in places like Europe and the US. It works fine in controlled societies like NK and China where people accept inconvenience as a cheap price to pay for not standing out, but in countries where everyone has the right to be reckless there will always be the complacent that go about their business regardless, and the malicious.

Much like HIV, you could be positive and there's little to stop you spreading the love. With protected sex you are under no obligation to tell your partners you are positive, while successful prosecutions are quite rare because it needs to be proven "beyond reasonable doubt" that a) you did not warn them before unprotected sex (word vs word), b) it was you that they got it from and not some other sexual partner, and c) that you intended to transmit to them.

In this regard I would stick the neck out and say whatever one's view of Thais and their society, they are more responsible and more likely person for person with Europeans to comply with common sense rules for self isolation when identified at risk.

This is what they look like in Germany. It's actually hard to find any images. Maybe they don't want us to see how ill prepared they are. The gloves look a bit oversized. The goggles look like he borrowed it from a handyman.

^ I suspect you're right, Herman - Europe might not be prepared; they have had time to be, but are they taking it seriously enough? There's also Jabir's point about different cultural norms, and as an example, the only people I see in Daegeon not wearing masks are a few Americans/Europeans...

There are very few cases here, but when I went to the doctor on Friday: 1) you would not be allowed in without wearing a mask; 2) you would not be allowed in without washing yours hands thoroughly with their medical alcohol gel; 3) you would not be allowed in without having your temperature taken (it was an electronic 'gun' held to my neck for about 3 seconds) and being below a certain temperature. My office is locked, you have to call a number for a security guard to come down and let you in, then, same procedure as above. Getting a train or bus intercity is the same. Anybody infected is isolated, all their movements detailed then sent via text message to people living in that area/city (not sure how wide the texts are, but I'm only receiving texts about cases in the city I live in).

I suppose, European countries are preparing to take the same/similar measures depending upon cases popping up.

I live in rural Buriram and I've just been told that our local hospital is being used to quarantine 4 people who have just returned from abroad. Dunno if they've tested positive. Should we be worried? Quite easy to lockdown the whole village if required.

Iran is moving up close to take Only 50 points away.

Germany has dropped and France is taking 5th again.

I'm confident that we will take back our spot. Those germans are just warming up, it's a bit like football.

Football games Bundesliga have not been suspended yet.
But the Goldene Kamera; an annual German film and television award has been canceled.

Is that because of the age factor, a two class society, or maybe they are just smarter ?

These checks and screenings within public venues are all well intended, of course.
Yet, remembering that this bug can be incubating for 7-14 days in anyone not showing any signs, acting as a active carrier spreading the contagion.

Before symptoms arise [or not], you could've passed it on to 100 people.....and they pass it on to a hundred more....and so on.

Another interesting note about this latent rhino, is that it remains very much alive, topically, for up to 2-3 days.

Do you have a link to that information. The reports I have heard state that it only survives for a few hours (up to 9 hours has been quoted) outside the hosts (e.g. hard surfaces)

    ===============

    from the WHO

It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment).

If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with simple disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.

    Q&A on coronaviruses (COVID-19)
