Maybe you can look up the Stock Market and see if you can buy some "Tin Hat Stocks". I heard its a good time to buy right now, unless you are a panic manic
Calculating the death rate on the current figures is quite simply flawed. This is how the 4% is doing the rounds and the one that Betty is getting all excited about. Once the panic is over and the virus has peaked, a real analysis can be carried out. I doubt it will be as high as 1% but was coming down from the 4%.

Yes it is worth containing to try and limit the rate of infection and a risk of the virus mutating into something worse. No it is not worth stockpiling a month of supplies and buying up the world supply of face masks and hand disinfectant.

Oh and yes it is advisable to stop picking your nose...

It's a good point, 'Arry, and you've made it repeatedly. According to a couple of the articles you linked to/copied, of the 15-20% of people infected who need hospital treatment the actual time needing intensive specialist treatment is long, several weeks - this puts massive pressure on the healthcare system; the beds and medical staff simple aren't there in large enough numbers. The knock on effect to other patients could be considerable; there has already been reports (hard to know if they are true or not coming out of China) that some patients who were in urgent need of treatment (non-CoronaVirus related) simply didn't get it due to the strains on the healthcare system.

This is from the Washington Post:

But, of course, to many who endlessly make inane comments on this thread, there is simply nothing to worry about because it hasn't affected them personally yet...

Best educated guess I've seen from a non-political source projecting ahead several months, when data can be properly gathered and processed, is "probably on the low side of 0.1% - 1%."

Fact is we were overdue a correction anyway, so CV gave the drivers a fine excuse to kill 2 birds with one panic.

For a bit of context: Swine flu killed >12k Americans from >60m infected, while its worldwide death toll topped 575,000. This one's a fcuking wimp.

It's the potential that's scary, but beta vaccines are already in the pipeline, and if CV infection reaches the psychological million (6-8x current infections according to various sources) even with the higher of the above estimates we're talking 10k dead, less than 5% of one day's global population increase.

I think the media has much to answer for, fat chance, once the hysteria dampens they'll simply move on in search of the next opiate.

Iran over 1,000 new infections today.

They are talking about closing down intranational travel. It seems a lot of people have taken the opportunity to go to the resorts on the Caspian Sea despite being told not to.

For a bit more context: "The 2009 flu pandemic or swine flu was an influenza pandemic that lasted from early 2009 to late 2010"

I wonder how many cases they left it on?

British Airways has confirmed that two of its staff, have tested positive for coronavirus.

The staff are believed to be baggage handlers at London’s Heathrow Airport.

Amazing how deep this is impacting everyone. A couple of my colleagues have said companies have stopped interviewing and hiring people until this passes.

The spring allergy is around the corner. Respiratory allergies and covied-2019 could take this to another level for young people.

Just to put this into perspective, the average age of the those that have died from the virus in Italy was reported by the Italian Authorities as 81. This is nothing like the 'flu pandemic of 1918, which killed people with good immune systems, many on their 20's and 30's. This virus is not killing young children, who are usually at high risk from 'flu. It is killing mainly the weak and elderly, most with underlying illnesses. Obviously health workers are at risk because of their proximity to patients and so are all those that are currently in hospitals or care homes.

As for risk, I have already said I am at risk as I tick both the age and disease boxes. That doesn't mean I am going to panic. I will take the same precautions I always take during the winter months. BTW I have many Italian work colleagues and I am also in direct touch with others in NE Italy. Life goes on and they are not as worried as those like you that get hysterical. Their main concern is the limited amount of ICU facilities left should they have another emergency. They are still having an espresso in their usual haunts and having a laugh and joke.

Now go find a brown paper bag and control your breathing....

Some people here are only calculating their survival/death rate. How naive ! They are forgetting the overall picture of this crisis. I told them to sell their stocks about 2 weeks ago here on TD. Now they come crying to me with half empty pockets.
Some people here are blaming the media for exaggerating. Well, go blame Wall Street and see what they say.
If some people are stocking up on disinfection, gloves, food etc. so be it. I don't blame them. Because I lost trust in our media and politicians a long time ago.
Am I hysterical? Last Sunday my wife and I went to a Chinese restaurant, today we got invited for a big birthday party at a Greek restaurant. "Ya mas"

Exactly right. People crunching numbers of cases and deaths not looking at the total impact of this deal. I was laughing as I have friends like you in utter shock about how much their financial portfolio has lost. I said same thing. Better consider a safe position near term. They waffled....and lost.

I personally think govts are making this worse by trying to contain it. If you read all the contingencies countries are implementing they are killing their economies. Let it take its course and when there is a vaccine add it to the annual flu shot.

The reason I concentrated initially on deaths rather than infection rates was that the general public has been led to believe through media outlets that this virus is the apocalypse.

When deaths are reported, the general fact the deceased was elderly or had underlying health issues (or both) are conveniently underreported or even omitted from the article.

When framed, "Covid-19 kills man in Surrey" sells more papers/gets more clicks than "89-year-old with pneumonia dies after contracting Covid-19"

I totally agree that this thing should be classed as a pandemic and is a danger to us all, either physically, socially and economically.
