As of 09:00 GMT on Saturday, more than 10,000 people in the UK had been tested for coronavirus.

    In other recent developments:

The Foreign Office has called on Iran to "immediately allow" health officials to examine Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe - a British-Iranian woman jailed in Iran. Her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, said he suspected she had the virus but said prison staff were refusing to test her
Meanwhile, conspiracy theories and false medical advice are becoming a problem in Iran - the country has seen more fatalities than anywhere else outside China
Fear of the virus wiped £200bn off UK firms' value as London's FTSE 100 share index saw one of its worst weeks since the 2008 financial crisis
People who had been in close contact with the first person to test positive for the virus in Northern Ireland have all been notified, officials say
"Drive-through" test centres for the virus have opened in Antrim and Edinburgh
Online supermarket Ocado has seen a spike in demand. The company told the BBC that shoppers were placing "particularly large orders" - and suggested customers place orders further in advance than usual
President Donald Trump says the first person in the US to die from coronavirus was a medically high-risk woman in her late 50s
France has temporarily banned gatherings of more than 5,000 people "in confined spaces" as it reported a jump in cases
And South Korea recorded its largest increase in coronavirus infections in a single day on Friday- bringing the total number of infections in the country to 3,150

And 1 person has died. The mortality rate is currently estimated at between 1-2 % despite the scaremongering tabloids.

Nidhog (even Jeff) had it right elsewhere on the forum: it's basically another strain of flu and most will shake it off. More of an issue if you're above 70 and/or have health problems though.

For the rest, most people will have little more than a heavy cold.

Nevertheless, it sounds like something we're gonna have to live with every flu season now the genie is out of the bottle.

Also do we have a map for people who have survived the dry cough flu and not reported it?

I swear the virus has been in the UK for a month now.

    See my posts above, Chitty.

It's barely a cough for most people.

Most people's motorbike and car accidents are hardly a scratch - I've had several, not sure I've even been bloodied in all of them combined.

Of course, I'd be an idiot to say it's barely a sore neck for most people or ask to see a comparable graph for cancer deaths...

I was speaking to my local doctor on Monday, he said to me this is the most serious medical situation in his lifetime (he's probably about 55), and he's extremely concerned about it.

Calm down Betty, South Korea yesterday had 3150 reported cases and 17 deaths ie 0.55% mortality.
The delta for SK yesterday was 813 new cases and 1 death.

It is mainly China and to some extent Iran that are bringing up the average worldwide mortality rate to the current 3.2%, a figure that is on decline.
Remove those two and mortality rate becomes more correct.
Think positively, you are not even in the age group of high mortality..

Lom, the virus has not played out, and it's very unlikely the mortality rate will end up under 2%, globally, if it's anything like the SARS timeline, mortality analysis, then we might be talking 4%+

Korea is a good indication of even in a developed country with a good healthcare system, the virus can get out of control in a matter of weeks. It'd be foolish to ignore that evidence, imho - this virus is a lot worse than some folks are realizing.

Look how densely the virus has spread easterly. When the virus spreads westerly into that huge population area then the number of cases will double, triple+ within weeks.

We're likely to see various spread patterns. 1) as above, moving out from its centre, Wuhan. 2) Smaller centres that spread such as we're seeing in Italy and Iran. It's neither contained nor containable. I'm not saying it's worse than the flu, it's different, but it has the potential to be similarly as dangerous (or more so), and then you have the flu x 2+; also, because it's new, because it's already a mutation itself, the potential for it to get even worse by mutating again or offering something new (like the fact a few folks got it again very quickly after recovering) is present.

&, Thailand is likely to become a big red spot before too long too, I hope not... Regarding Thailand, the wife was watching Thai TV, and they were saying the numbers of Thai Caspers returning to Thailand from Korea has increased 400% in the last 10 days or so.

When will the REAL numbers from Russia come out? Two infections is a joke.

Trump and Putin have soooo much in common.

Trump talks down the virus and Putin makes it non-existent.

Maybe they should take some advice from Kim Jong Un.

    Corona cruises ...

Diamond Princess owner won't offer refunds for cruise cancellations

    February 29, 2020
Australians booked on upcoming ocean cruises, including aboard the virus-stricken Diamond Princess, have been told they won’t receive refunds if they cancel their trips because of health concerns.

That’s forcing many to make difficult decisions about their health. Go, and they risk contracting the virus. Cancel, and they are guaranteed to lose their money.

The cruise industry has come under intense pressure globally after the giant Diamond Princess vessel became synonymous with the spread of the coronavirus. Six people died and more than 800 people fell sick on Diamond Princess and it spent two weeks quarantined off Yokohama.

The company that owns the ship Carnival plans to hold customers to the contracts – which generally say only partial refunds are available for cancellations made six months before a trip leaves.

A spokesman for Carnival Australia, the Australian wing of the company that owns the Diamond Princess, said the risk of catching coronavirus aboard is low.

In the wake of the disaster, the share price for Carnival Corporation – Princess Cruises’ parent company – has dropped from US$51 to $31. Between Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Lines, the entire industry has seen billions wiped from its share value.

A spokesman for Carnival Australia, Princess Cruises’ parent company, told The Age they considered the risk of catching the virus on board their vessels to be low.

"On that basis... normal terms and conditions apply in relation to cancellations," the spokesman said.

The issue isn't that the mortality rate is better or worse than flu, or that it's killed less people than fucking car accidents.

It's that it spreads more quickly, because it appears that it is able to survive longer outside the body. This could lead to medical services being overwhelmed, supply chains collapsing and so on.
