Thailand Has World’s 8th Highest Number of Serious or Critical COVID-19 Cases

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has reported that Thailand has the 8th highest number of serious or critical COVID-19 cases in the world, as defined by worldometers.info

CCSA spokesman Dr Thaveesilp Visanuyothin announced a jump in the number of patients with severe symptoms to 2,738, with 717 on ventilators. Thailand also logged 9,326 new cases and recorded 91 fatalities on 10 July.

Bangkok has the most, with 3,191, followed by 672 in Pathum Thani, 603 in Samut Prakan, 551 in Samut Sakhon, 359 in Chon Buri, 334 in Nonthaburi, 225 in Songkhla, 207 in Lop Buri, 175 in Saraburi and 173 in Pattani. Bangkok also led with the most deaths (51), followed by Samut Prakan (9), Nonthaburi (8), Pathum Thani (5) and Nakhon Pathom (4).

The CCSA also reported new clusters in three provinces, namely at a tap water plant in Ayutthaya’s Bang Pa-in district, Sompob market in Nakhon Pathom’s Sam Phran district, a plastics plant in Nakhon Pathom’s Nakhon Chaisri district and at an electronics company in Ratchaburi’s Ban Pong district.

How many Thai medical personnel die from work related causes every year?

Don't panic, those numbers will go up as Delta spreads.

    They'll start dropping like Indonesians.

As Delta Covid-19 cases in Tokyo rise, prime minister Yoshihide Suga declared a state of emergency for the capital to slow the spread of the virus.

Set to run from 12 July to 22 August, the state of emergency means alcohol sales in on-trade venues, including restaurants and karaoke bars, will be suspended. Venues will also have to close by 8pm.

Furthermore, the Olympic Games in Japan – which will take place from 23 July to 8 August – will be held without spectators at venues in and around the capital.

It is difficult to form an opinion because there is no control group to consider this against. However, let's accept that healthworkers are a relatively high risk group and their infections so far, before Delta really gets going, is just under 1 in 1,000.

Now look at the Phuket Sandbox arrivals (Bangkok Post):

Of the total 3,917 tourists who had arrived in Phuket from July 1-10, six of them had tested positive for Covid-19

So this possibly lower risk group who all had paperwork to confirm their overseas vaccinations and had tests to show they were Covid-free before travelling, had an infection rate of roughly 1.5 per 1,000 once they were here.

On balance, I'd say that makes the local healthcare workers' scheme look reasonably effective.

Ever considered how our world would have evolved if there was no vaccine? Polio and smallpox would still be household names, for a starter.
Edward Jenner, Louis Pasteur, Jonas Salk etc. Maybe study the history of science a bit more, and the Falun Gong edition of 'Communism is Evil' a bit less.

Currently, Tambon is getting 5 doses of AZ a week. 5 doses to administer to 157 Moobans. The reason for all the rules changes is because there is simply not enough AZ to begin vaccinated the number of folks in the high risk area.

I envy you folks that have recieved at least one jab. Unless there is a huge boost in the supply this irritating nonsense we are told daily should be taken as a grain of salt.

Thailand’s Frontline Medical Staff Will Receive Booster Vaccine Shot This Week

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) has announced that frontline medical staff will be given a booster shot of AstraZeneca vaccine this week.

DDC deputy director-general Dr. Sophon Iamsirsithavorn said a panel of experts has recommended a third dose for medical workers, because over 600, who received two doses of China’s Sinovac vaccine, have been infected with COVID-19.

According to the DDC, two medical staff have died from COVID-19 after getting the Sinovac vaccine, including a nurse in a private hospital who died despite having completed her vaccinations.

Dr. Sophon said that is the reason the department needs to give a third shot, to boost the immunity of medical staff, is because nurses and nursing assistants are at the highest risk of COVID-19 infections among medical staff, at 54%, followed by 7% for doctors and dentists.

Antibody levels in people fully vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine decline by half every 40 days, according to findings from a joint study between Thammasat University's faculty of medicine and the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Biotec).

The findings were revealed by Anan Jongkaewwattana, director of Veterinary Health Innovation and Management Research Group of Biotec.

Mr Anan wrote on Facebook that their study of 500 people, who received two doses of Sinovac, indicated that the level of antibodies drops by 50% every 40 days. The level of antibodies in people who received a second jab more than 60 days after the first was on average lower than that of those who got the second dose in less than 60 days, he said.

Mr Anan said the vaccine potency within 60 days of the second shot is between 60%-70% against the original strain. The potency against the original strain declines to about 50% in those receiving the second shot for over 60 days.

However, no data is available about the potency of two doses of Sinovac against variants, especially the highly contagious Alpha and Delta strains.

The overall level of immunisation is likely to drop in older people, he said, adding those aged over 40 showed lower antibody levels than those younger.

Meanwhile, Chalermchai Boonyaleepun, deputy chairman of the Senate committee on public health, posted on Blockdit that vaccines have done their job in lowering Covid-19 infections and fatalities in healthcare workers despite reports that some of them who had received the vaccines still caught the virus.

He did not mention the vaccine types but most medical workers received two doses of Sinovac.

Citing information from the De[at]partment of Disease Control, he said of the 700,000 who were fully vaccinated, 707 became infected, a ratio of 101:100,000. Of the 21,000 not vaccinated, 173 were infected, a ratio of 823:100,000. The rate among medical workers not vaccinated is eight times higher, he said.

Seven medical workers have died from Covid-19, two of whom were vaccinated. The death rate in the vaccinated group was 0.28% while in the non-vaccinated group it was 2.89%.

The Thais are creating mutations of their own.

A construction worker was found to be simultaneously infected by both the Alpha and Delta COVID-19 variants, while six others were infected with a hybrid strain of the two, according to Director-General of the Medical Sciences Department Dr. Supakit Sirilak today (Monday).
Expressing shock by the finding, while reassuring the public the seven cases were not severe, Dr. Supakit said this is why it was necessary to seal worker housing facilities in and around Bangkok late last month.
The cases remain, however, of concern and follow-up monitoring is needed, to prevent infections by two virus strains at the same time from spreading to the point that the combination of the strains in a single host result in a new variant.

We were hoping to go to Brittany mid-August after we have our vaccinations but it won't quite be 2 weeks after. This could be tricky as I wanted to go by Train and stay overnight in Paris.

I guess it'll be PCR tests again, but at least we have private accommodation at destination.

Was hoping the rules were going to slacken over the summer.

A second man who was caught attempting to get on a plane with a forged PCR test has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Brusselse correction court on Monday.

It concerns the second such conviction since 27 April, when the public prosecutor’s office announced that it would take strict action against such acts. The first conviction happened on Tuesday 22 June, for a similar offence.

On 7 May, the man had presented himself at the airport with the results of a PCR test which was supposed to show that he had tested negative for the coronavirus, according to reports by the Belga news agency.

However, after checking with the laboratory that had supposedly conducted the test, it turned out that no test with the man’s reference numbers had been carried out, and that his name did not appear in the data either.

The traveller then confessed that he had bought the forged certificate for €30.

The public prosecutor’s office in Halle-Vilvoorde first offered the man a settlement of €750, but he refused. He also did not appear in court, and was sentenced in absentia to a prison term of one year and a fine of €4,000.

“These are very serious offences,” the court said in its ruling, reports Belga. “International air travel is the easiest way for a pandemic to spread globally.”

According to the court, the person involved demonstrated “an anti-social and dangerous attitude, that does not only show a complete lack of respect for health care providers, but also put the health and safety of his fellow travellers at risk.”

Travelling abroad for non-essential reasons has been possible again since 19 April, but travellers have to fill out a
Passenger Locator Form (PLF) upon return. To combat abuse, the Board of Prosecutors-General has issued guidelines on the prosecution of persons who falsify such PLFs or Covid test certificates.

In practice, these guidelines state that people who create or use these false documents are immediately summoned to appear before the criminal court. However, prosecutors can opt to first propose an amicable settlement of €750.

Between 19 April and 11 June, 576 people were caught with such a falsified PCR test at the airport, reports Belga.
