Thailand will continue to use COVID-19 vaccine from China's Sinovac Biotech (SVA.O) following six reports of unusual "stroke-like" side effects among recipients, government-appointed experts said on Wednesday.
Six medical personnel in Rayong province, east of Bangkok, who were inoculated earlier this month experienced symptoms similar to those of a stroke, the panel of experts said, including drowsiness and numbness in the limbs.
They have since recovered after being given stroke treatments and no blood clots were found.
The announcement comes amid heightened global focus on efficacy levels and possible side-effects from different COVID-19 vaccines, and temporary suspensions in some countries, including over reports of blood clots among some recipients.
Sinovac did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.
Thailand has received two million doses of the Chinese company's CoronaVac, which have already been administered to more than 600,000 people nationwide. It has ordered 1.5 million more shots due to arrive soon.
The experts could not say for certain what caused the symptoms, which they believed may be related to the nervous system and were not fatal, said Kulkanya Chokephaibulkit from Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital.
Brain scans from all six women showed normal results which did not suggest a stroke, and no irregularities were found in the vaccine batch from where the six doses originated, Kulkanya said.
Doses from the same batch were distributed to other provinces and more than 300,000 people might have already received the shots, she added.
"The panel agreed we can continue to use this vaccine batch because the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the temporary effects, which can occur," Kulkanya said.
No such effects have previously been reported in Thailand or other countries, she added.
The incidents would not change Thailand's plan to begin mass inoculations from June, said Taweesap Siraprapasiri of the Department of Disease Control.
"The side effects can be monitored and they are not beyond what we can expect," said Taweesap.

Japan raises travel alert on Thailand
BANGKOK (NNT) - The Japanese government is advising all Japanese nationals to avoid travel to Thailand, along with 160 other countries, due to the worsening of the COVID-19 situation in these countries.
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs updated the overseas travel advice and warning about Thailand on Tuesday, changing the category from Level 2 - avoid non-essential travel - to Level 3 - avoid all travel - due to the more widespread transmission of COVID-19.
With this change, Thailand and six other countries now join 153 countries already on Level 3.
Mr Tanee Sangrat, Director General of the Department of Information, and the Spokesman of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said today the change means the Japanese government is imposing more stringent border control measures on travelers from Thailand.
According to Japan’s Foreign Ministry, Thailand is now on the list of 159 countries and regions, where non-Japanese nationals will be denied entry if they spend time in any of these countries within 14 days of arriving in Japan.
Mr Tanee said some people will be exempt from the ban, including diplomats, government officials, spouses of Japanese nationals, and children of Japanese nationals. These people must present their negative COVID-19 test result conducted within 72 hours prior to travel, subject to a 14-day quarantine on arrival in Japan, and must refrain from using public transport.
Meanwhile, repatriation flights for Thai nationals in Japan, returning Thai nationals with a transit stop in Japan, and semi-commercial flights between Thailand and Japan will not be affected.

Excess deaths due to pandemic much higher than reported COVID toll: WHO
Up to three times more people have died due to the pandemic than indicated by the officially reported COVID deaths, the World Health Organization said Friday.
So far, more than 3.4 million deaths worldwide have officially been attributed to COVID-19 since the disease first surfaced in China in late 2019.
But according to a global health statistics report from the WHO, far more people have died that would otherwise not have, had it not been for the pandemic, either due to COVID or because they could not get treatment for other ailments.
"Total deaths are at least two to three times higher than officially reported," Samira Asma, the WHO assistant director-general in charge of data, told reporters.
In 2020, the report found there had been at least three million excess deaths due directly or indirectly to COVID-19, while the official number of COVID deaths was 1.8 million at the end of the year.
Asked how many excess deaths could be attributed to the pandemic today, Asma said that "I think safely, about six to eight million deaths could be an estimate, with a cautionary note."
The WHO was working with countries "to understand the true human toll of the pandemic so we can be better prepared for the next emergency," she said.
The discrepancy is due to a number of factors, including lagging reporting on COVID deaths in a number of countries; the fact that many people early on died of COVID without being tested; and also that many were unable to get treatment for other diseases and conditions due to lockdown measures.
"Excess mortality gives us a better picture, because it captures both of these direct and indirect effects," WHO data analyst William Msemburi told reporters.

No dates have been given for the vaccination in either province, probably because they have no idea of when they will receive the vaccine doses, nor have I been told which vaccine I will receive again because at this point they are simply gathering numbers and have no idea of what will be received.

So I got an SMS saying I needed a PCR test to get on my plane tonight and that I should always use their website for the latest information.
Checked the airline website where it clearly states I don't.
Phoned them and was told that I don't.
Checked in today and after check in it says I do.

I booked a nice rooftop restaurant in Bkk last night for a birthday dinner with a friend.
She phoned me and said their website says it apparently doesn't open until 1st June. I showed her the booking. She phoned them and they said they are open.
Two hours before the reservation, they phoned me to say they aren't open until the 1st June, but they are doing food on the 2nd floor with a limited menu. Fortunately Times Square is round the corner and you can still buy booze anywhere, so I told them to fuck off. We ordered in and quaffed champagne in my suite instead.

^^ I didn't sign up, but am now starting to wonder about it.
My Welsh mate who's son is at the same school did sign up and things have moved fast. He's having the first Sinovac jab this afternoon in Korat.
I'm still fairly comfortable not signing up... I reckon Western vaccines will be available privately for Westerners by July/August and I'm not looking to work until late August anyway. I think that travel to Europe will be a lit easier with a Western vaccine.
