Its not looking good, but but apparently those who consume at least 5 KFC's a week do seem to have some immunity.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has held a special government meeting on the Lunar New Year public holiday to warn that the spread of a deadly new virus is "accelerating".

You just have to put this onto an overlay of the SARS situation to see where we are... It's gonna get worse, it's gonna be global with hundreds of cases in major cities around the world, and the WTO are playing politics to appease the Chinese - pathetic.

Not sure thats the case but that news feed saying the chinese are creating a 1000 bed hospital was a joke, 23 Mil on lock down at the time and an as yet unknown fatality rate, even 1% is looking bad.

Policies to ensure funding to contain virus unveiled

A new set of policies has been announced to ensure sufficient funding to contain the novel coronavirus, according to a statement jointly issued by the Ministry of Finance and the National Health Commission on Saturday.

The central and local governments will provide subsidies to people infected with the novel coronavirus pneumonia. Apart from payments by the basic medical insurance, serious illness insurance and medical assistance system, any medical costs which must be personally paid for will be subsidized, said the statement.

Medical staff and epidemic prevention workers will receive temporary work subsidies from the government, the statement said.

Local governments will arrange funds for medical institutions to purchase special equipment for protection, diagnosis and treatment for epidemic prevention and control, as the two ministries required.

The Ministry of Finance allocated a total of 1 billion yuan ($144.2 million) on Thursday to support the battle against the new virus. And the China Development Bank, one of the country's major policy banks, offered emergency loans worth 2 billion yuan on Friday to Wuhan for prevention and control of the novel coronavirus.

Not very impressive by the WHO so far, politics rather than action:
What are the WHO requirements for, "declaring it a pandemic"?

On what basis are you concluding that it's, "politics", as opposed to WHO procedures?

Are you suggesting China can just snap it's fingers and an international organisation jumps?

Who, at the WHO, stated it is, "a global emergency"?

The WHO appears to consist of the same number of members as the UN.

This is a link to the WHO's site.

    WHO | Basic documents

On page 193 there is a list of member countries, it appears to be similar to the UN list of countries.

At the WHO site there is one "news" item on the subject:

WHO statement on novel coronavirus in Thailand

    13 January 2020 News release

"The World Health Organization (WHO) is working with officials in Thailand and China following reports of confirmation of the novel coronavirus in a person in Thailand.

The person was a traveler from Wuhan, China, and was identified by Thai officials on 8 January, and hospitalized that day.

The person is recovering from the illness according to Thai officials.

The possibility of cases being identified in other countries was not unexpected, and reinforces why WHO calls for on-going active monitoring and preparedness in other countries. WHO has issued guidance on how to detect and treat persons ill with the new virus.

The genetic sequencing shared by China enables more countries to rapidly diagnose patients.

WHO reiterates that it is essential that investigations continue in China to identify the source of this outbreak and any animal reservoirs or intermediate hosts.

Given developments, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will consult with Emergency Committee members and could call for a meeting of the committee on short notice."

Has the WHO called a meeting of the Emergency Committee Members?

One update from the Global Times site:

    2:30 am Jan 24

WHO considered it is still too early to declare coronavirus as a public health emergency of international concern given its restrictive and binary nature.

Erm, i said already its the countries outside China that need to be getting their public info shite in a line, sorry again if that wasn't clear. I have worked with units on containment but the hot zone spreads faster than an Aussie bush fire so containment and individual hygiene measure are required.

Are they sending in food and supplies and stuff, or just kinda leaving it as some sort of free-for-all computer game sim called Entombment, with 30 million players.

I tend to agree with the Gooner on this one - the "updates" are at least a month behind the reality.

Didn't they give 12 hours warning of the closure? So thousands left before the ban was inplace?

A shot of pangolin scale tea or perhaps a snort of powdered rhino horn should be an adequate preventive.

US orders evacuation of diplomats from Wuhan

The United States on Saturday ordered the evacuation of its diplomats and citizens from Wuhan, a city in Central China where the coronavirus outbreak originated.

The US government is arranging a charter flight for Sunday to bring back its employees and their families from the US Consulate General in Wuhan, The Wall Street Journal said, quoting a person familiar with the operation. The plane will carry around 230 people, and those evacuated will be responsible for the costs.

According to the Journal, the operation came after negotiations with China's Foreign Ministry and other government agencies in recent days. Roughly 1,000 American citizens are thought to be in Wuhan.

The US will also temporarily shut down its consulate general in the city.

The plane will have US medical personnel abroad to ensure that anyone infected with the coronavirus is cared for and doesn't spread it.

It's not immediately clear where the plane is headed.

The US State Department on Thursday raised its travel advisory to Level 4, warning its citizens to not travel to Hubei province.

On the same day, the State Department ordered the departure of all non-emergency US personnel and their family members. The US government has limited ability to provide emergency services to US citizens in Hubei province.

Also on Thursday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised its travel warning to level 3, instructing travelers to avoid all nonessential travel to Wuhan.

As of Saturday, the US has confirmed two cases of coronavirus, which includes a Chicago woman in her 60s and a Seattle man in his 30s.

The Chicago woman traveled from Wuhan to Chicago on Jan 13, but wasn't showing symptoms then. She is being treated in a hospital in isolation and was reportedly in good condition Friday night.

The Seattle man arrived at the Seattle-Tacoma Airport from Wuhan on Jan 15, before any health screenings began at US airports. He went to an urgent care facility Jan 19 and was diagnosed with the coronavirus Monday. He is also reported to be in good condition.

Wuhan is home to the business operations of a number of US corporations, including auto maker General Motors Co.

As of Saturday, the coronavirus outbreak has been blamed for the deaths of at least 41 people and infected more than 1,000 people in China, the United States, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal, Australia and France.

Wondering how it would be handled in other states (please no names here)...

Frankly, as as matter of fact, the Chinese are quite capable enough to survive in any harsh conditions - and supply themselves without any help from outside - unlike others who are depending on the thousands of containers daily at their gates...

China can't feed its own population and is reliant on foreign firms and markets for its own goods - take that away and the economy crumbles.
